Alternative idea for the potion shop. Have it be a normal potion shop, but later when the party ask about it, the villagers note that there's never been a potion shop there.

These are definitely the easiest encounters to make work. I've tried the Urban Encounters table and well, you can't exactly have the party be assaulted by nine (1d10) Shadows or a Vampire Spawn in broad daylight.
@gtstudios7507

that's a possiblity?
@BeaglzRok1
@BeaglzRok1 2 года назад
@@gtstudios7507 The random encounter tables are divided by gameplay tier (1-4, 5-10, 11-16, 17+) so the CR of an encounter can vary from fair to definitely intended for higher levels. 44-45 on a d100 in 1-4 Urban Encounter is "3d6" bandits. Yes, about 3-6 bandits would fit a level 1-2 party. 12-18 bandits would not fit a level 1-2 party unless you want to rob the party blind. Similar with 15: 3d6 Kobolds, which have Pack Tactics btw. 5-10 (which I misremembered slightly) has things like: "Bandit Captain with 3d8 Bandits," "1d10 half-ogres," "3d6 Shadows," "2d4 Vampire Spawn or 1d4 Oni," and tops out with things like "1 Mage with 1 Shield Guardian" or "1 Rakshasa or 1 Vampire." FIVE TO TEN

I remember a particularly memorable campaign where I ran that guards harassment scenario. Let's just say the players didn't take it well at all. The players killed the guards, killed the guard reinforcements, then proceeded to systematically murder every single guard in the town, as the people fled in terror. Next, I openly rolled a random encounter for a change of pace. Double-zeros, monster stampede. The players watched from afar, the town was defenseless, overrun. Funny thing being, the group weren't murderhobos until that scenario took place. I was expecting a social situation or a combat using subdual damage rules. Nope.
@jlaw131985
@jlaw131985 2 года назад
I mean, it sounds like the town had a serious problem with guards abusing authority. Perhaps shouldn’t have killed them, and were a bit hasty in their decision of how to address social issues since they didn’t have an actual solution other than killing them all. It sounds like all of the guards fought to the death, which is weird.
@Delmworks
@Delmworks 9 месяцев назад
That kinda shows the problem with the first encounter-abuse of power is something that many players have experienced, and therefore really raises the hackles of many players, and they would in fact rather go murderhobo than play along with perceived power-abuse
@MrMrtvozornik
@MrMrtvozornik 4 месяца назад
@@Delmworks Only because DnD as a hobby is riddled with socially awkward nerds who have plenty of imagination for power and yet zero social skills to be likable by other people in real life. So what, couple of guards were power tripping power abusers, but to other 95% of guards that came to fight the PCs, the party as actual legitimate threat that is attacking the town. There are so many creative ways to grit your teeth but still come on top. 1. Talk your way out of it, letting Paladin/Bard/Warlock enjoy their CHA stat. 2. Run away screaming. 3. Pay your due and then reach their captain, logging in a report. If he's corrupted too, you can go further, and make this side mission for the party, especially because they've been wronged by the guards instead of just being goodie two shoes helping citizens cause "we're heroes". 4. Pay your due then have rogue follow the guards, find out where they live, steal the due back. Hell, I'd even allow my players to kill every single one of the corrupt guards silently, and have them pay little investigation as majority of people either hated them or the investigators got caught in "they had too many enemies" so by the time it comes to interrogating the party they're long gone. 5. Pretty much anything else to be honest, as long as it takes planning. But nooooo, we're acne riddled cringe outcasts that want to feel powerful. Ah, you've gave me "moral superiority" by extorting me, time to die. What's that, guards are reacting to people being killed in their city, hah, they're just as corrupt, time to die. Otherwise you'll treat my cities as a joke. And yes, some are going to be good and help you, some are going to be great and befriend you, but some are going to extort you, they're all different people too, not just random automatons. And if they try to extort you, find your way out, or grit your f*cking teeth and bare it, like you would in real life, then get your revenge, fix the issue, or cut your losses and leave. If you kill my guards you're spitting in my face, because what you're basically saying is "Laws don't apply to me, I'm special" and I'll be damned if I let you power trip over random level 1 commoners cause your life is sad outside of the game. Otherwise you'll treat my cities as a joke. tl;dr If you let your players kill guards willy nilly and don't kill them for it, you're a f*cking p*ssy and you deserve murderhobos you've let run loose.

Personally, if the party has a Druid, or a Beastmaster Ranger, that are looking for more exotic beasts, I see setting up a zoo as a very simple way to allow this access. Although, I'd probably reskin Guards and Scouts to act as Zookeepers and the like, modifying their weapons to do Non-Lethal damage - as in the Scout's arrows act like a tranquillizer, with the target being knocked out within 1d4+1 rounds, and the Guard's spear can either add more tranquilizer, or act something like a mancatcher for animals, and thus restrain them. Also, thanks to Sidekick Rules, these simple Zookeepers might be more effective than they seem - although I'd make sure that they all got Animal Handling as a skill.

This is super helpful! I'm about to start a campaign where the players are pirates exploring an archipelago and there's a large city that they can go to. I was needing random things to happen in that city, although I definitely already planned the dead body one to spin it off into a Jack the Ripper style murder mystery

I did something similar to the guard encounter but used a strong npc just following them, not hiding or anything just following. If they reacted first, the guards around the keep would think of them as the aggressors. But if they waited there was the threat of him doing something more dangerous.

Mr. Logs, could you ever do a "Homebrew Content" review on this channel, in the same vein you did Custom Card reviews on the Yu-Gi-Oh channel? I think those would be really fun and even more fitting, considering that in DnD you could use those items in any campaign depending on the DM while Custom Cards are mostly stuck to casual play or hipothetical scenarios

5e chase rules are too crunchy. The Cogent Role-Play game has this alternative: Basics: There are only three distances: Short, Medium, and Long. These distances are abstract not literal, and are context based. For example, in a foot chase, short might be a few meters, but in a starship chase, short might be a few miles. The rules describe Short as being too far to make a melee attack, but close enough to make a ranged attack. Start of the chase: The narrator (that's the GM) begins the chase by establishing the initial distance of the chase. Running the chase: From round to round, the participants of the chase make contested die rolls. On foot, you make an Athletics roll. If mounted or piloting a vehicle or vessel, you make a Ride/Pilot roll. The winner changes the distance of the chase by one distance in their favor. It's up to the narrator to explain this using their creativity and interpretations of everyone's actions. Ending the chase: The quarry automatically escapes if they win the chase roll when at the furthest distance (long), or the pursuer automatically stops the quarry if they win the chase roll at the closest distance (shot). Again, it's up to the narrator to explain how.

Fighter > Barbarian > Rogue > Paladin > Monk > Ranger > Warlock > Artificer > Cleric > Bard > Wizard > Sorcerer > Druid This would be my rough list of easiest to most difficult to play. Basically martials are pretty simple, spell casters are more confusing to play but this would also shift depending on your subclass.

I, for one, hate guard encounters. The social skills never work because of people in the party not trying to play face. And then, independent of the encounter's result we go to jail. And delay story progress.
