Quicker to set up solo games that don't take as long -- 20 Strong, Astro Knights, 51st State, Warp's Edge, Final Girl, etc -- have really helped me get more games played as of late. I had a bad tendency to buy a lot of big box, long games and that definitely hindered my ability to play something.
It's so hard, but get rid of board games you do not play, even if you have never played them (after having it for a long period of time). I developed a mindset that every game that leaves my collection is a potential way of getting someone into or deeper in the hobby, whereas having it on my shelf does nothing but collect dust. It's sweet having a big collection, I get that, but you start to view board games as decor rather than games.
I think the main thing to learn for people is to not let your OCD take over with this hobby. Step back and think about how often you’d actually play the games you want to buy. Do you really want to play these games or are you just intrigued by them? Look at the complexity on BGG and figure out if it’s something you will realistically play. Be excited about what you purchase at the moment instead of always chasing after the next thing. I am giving advice that I don’t always follow, but it’s what I’m trying to get better at. I definitely do play video games more than board games, but I do play a decent amount of board games as well. Nothing wrong with that. Just do what you love!
Reason 11: current health conditions prevent you from playing. Still able to get games in and played over 150 last year, though I barely made that goal with repeated plays of Orchard, Grove, and the Sprawlopolis family right before the new year arrived. Definitely agree with the rules reason but mine is less from the perspective of it's new and more from the perspective of I have too many games to remember all the rules. Really great solutions for overcoming the excuses and I think this will be a very useful video. Would love to see a condensed version on Quack & Co in a year or so just to nudge people towards analyzing why they are not playing the number of games the want. My best solution to playing games is to set one up one day and allowing myself to wait until the next day to play or to play a round and come back to the rest of the game later. I find that I play a lot more games this way.
@@Quackalope this is what I do! I frequently find myself setting up a game of ISS Vanguard or Nemesis or Too Many Bones -- games that take HOURS to finish (unless you lose super fast haha) -- and coming back to it later. Sometimes later that day, sometimes two days later.
Some good points made. I definitely play more since I have been lucky enough to have a dedicated room and (homebuilt) gaming table. This means that I have a game set up for about 7 days and can keep going back to it, to play for as long as I like. I have another space dedicated to painting miniatures. I would point out that I play predominantly solo, although I do have one gaming friend and live alone after a 33 year relationship broke down.
