That is incorrect and while I know you're asking for some commie gobbeldy-gook, the demonstration is that plenty of places have massive swaths of fast food and a relatively slim healthy population and 10 of these populations at the top have no special fast food availability either. If you had no other option but 'fast food' you'd still be perfectly capable of being as slim as you want to be. No fast food restaurant on earth every held a gun at someone and forced them to eat 1000 calories more than they needed.
Yes, you're right. On 8 Dec 2017. President of Nauru(Mr. Baron Waqa) visited my country. People in my country said that the president and his wife are too fat.
It wasn't global warming, it was the gravity of the population all this time. Brilliant observation and humor in your comment, gave me a chuckle. If you don't do stand-up comedy, then you should and make sure to include this observational bit; It'll have the crowd laughing for sure.
It would be interesting to see another version of this video, excluding the relatively unique Pacific island nations that are predisposed to obesity, as you explained, or a list of the top fattest country in each region/continent of the world.
Samoans are huge people! Yeh, the older ones have plenty of blubber on them but they are flat out large framed, large boned, large muscled people. Most adult women have calves bigger than my muscular thighs. First time I saw a bunch of them I couldn't help but stare.......
We're the fattest OECD country, but not the fattest country overall. It was last updated in 2020 and has us ranked 12th now. Most of the countries ranked above us are small South Pacific nations like Samoa, the Cook Islands, and Nauru (1st btw). Kuwait's also above us, the only one that I know isn't in the Oceania region (though I have never heard of some of the countries, so I don't know where they are lol) Essentially out of countries that are major players on a global scale with substantial populations, we're the fattest. Though all the percentages should be took with a massive grain of salt considering BMI is the measurement used. BMI is flawed as hell. It considers a lot of athletes obese because it only takes height and weight into account and muscle weighs more than fat.
@JinHit ~ We BeLieve in MuJic and Dad joKeS🎵 not hardly. The US is becoming ever more enraptured by fitness culture. In fact, over the last 20 years, the average American waistline has decreased by over 20%. The UK on the other hand, has seen an average waistline increase of almost the same amount. Current trends show that the US is by far the most health-conscious nation on the planet.
No US, but the US has had a big fat hand contributing to these countries' fatness. Another factor specific to Polynesia is back during the expeditions incl those that settled the Hawaiian islands, crews and colonies would kind of select members in a way that resulted in settlers being really efficient at storing nutrients
@@TheAstroflight the uber rich billionares all have their own private islands the ceo's of the world wouldnt be caught dead in those tacky resorts with the middle class peasants on vacation
@@Mark_87 i think the islanders getting fatter is just evolution anticipating the rising sea levels, make them more boyant so the can float to high ground lol
There are very few vegetables in Micronesia. And fruit is extremely protected by those whose land the tree is on. Grocery stores don't offer much in the way of vegetables and they are expensive and not that great quality. Stores mostly get whatever doesn't sell in America. No welfare or food stamps as some might assume.
That's because we're spreading our bad habits across the world. The thing that astounds me is European countries know and see what has happened in America and know why it's happened and yet I see RU-vidrs from these countries saying we're getting more drive thru options! And my heart just sinks for these countries. Just tell these fast food companies NO ffs
But then they turn around and say, Americans are so fat! They need to stop eating fast food! It's gotten to the point in America that eating healthy is extremely expensive. And we've created this situation
'Fer sure, and love the chubby ones complaining about the 'definition' of obesity (which if he were here, would surely include our current 'morbidly obese' POTUS)!
There may be something to that "Thrift Theory"- When we think of pre-contact Pacific Island tribes, we picture an obese chief ruling over skinnier members of the tribe. Obviously he was not eating McDonald's. So there may be a genetic component underlying their obesity.
Yes, and exposure to radiation does stimulate fat storage, and increased blood sugar. You can see the rise in blood sugar in Great Britain, even in the midst of improved eating habits and national weight loss, as they receive the air born pulverized dust from armor piercing rounds used in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I'm going to be writing a story with my own characters about a fat chief ruling over skinnier members and it is more attractive to be fat than skinny in this world. Even his poorest and poverished memberes bring him food as offerings to respect their boss.
This is depressing; life seems depressing these days! Am I the only person left who cooks from scratch ? Fast food has been the ruination of the family mealtime !!!
as Americans we need to all start gardening because health food like fruits and vegetables are expensive in America while cheap starchy, sugary foods are cheap
I agree that it would be great if we could all get into gardening, even community gardening for those that don't have the space. Also, visiting the local fresh food markets a little more often. Not an attractive diet to someone like myself that sadly doesn't always enjoy 'healthy' food, but we definitely should make more of an effort to adopt more self sustaining diets and stockpiling stuff for winter when things are out of season. Here in Utah, we jar a lot of our fruits for winter use, we're #49 on the fattest states list and that may be part of the reason (but not all of us engage in that activity, though I grew up doing so).
it is not, it's just that people is too lazy to cook, but it is not, I live in new york and there's no way junk processed food is cheaper than healthy food, however, sometimes the prices are almost the same
There should be a baseline population requirement for this list so we could hear about more well known countries. Or perhaps a comparison of first world countries.
So basically the entire Comments sections boils down to: 1. OMG America *has* to be #1 based on stereotyping that all Americans are obese so let's find tons of excuses why this video must be wrong and the stereotype is right AND; 2. If the video is right, then let's post endless comments on how America is responsible for making all the other countries fat by forcing them all to eat fast food so we can at least feel better about our uninformed, stereotypical view of a country we've probably never even visited.
The facts are that the US' obesity level stands between 33 and 34% as of 2017, but Canada, the UK, Australia, and NZ are all between 28 and 30% obese, not far at all behind the US.
I figured out why when my husband was stationed in Georgia. Between the ungodly humidity, the mosquitoes, the heat, and the pecan pie, you're practically doomed.
Well I know that I see far more fat people here in 'Murrica now then I did as a child in the 80s and 90s. I see more fat kids too. It used to be there was that one fat kid. He was known as the fat kid and sadly, he got picked on because of it. Now you see a lot more fat kids. To me, the bad processed foods and fast foods are mostly nasty and I don't want to eat them. But the temptation is constantly there for everyone who does like them. The human body is still in caveman mode and that's why we hold onto so much fat. In case of famine. Any women who get ravenous before their period know the feeling. It's because your body thinks you might get pregnant and wants to prepare itself in case you are with child during famine.
Responsibility? GOOGLE: taste engineering bliss point and readup on the importance of pigs in island and far eastern culture and the role of Spam and other canned pork products as well as soda
Soul Journey: to each his own. Your mileage may vary. Generally, it's just too damn many calories for how much your body burns off. Everything else is detail. But believe what you want. Just don't try to foist it off on others, as everyone has slightly different needs. Clearly, though, whatever Julia is eating, she's eating a bit too much for how much she burns off. Let it go at that. That's enough to get started with. Look it up online, count calories, caluculate your BMR and eat 500 fewer calories a day than you burn off for one year. Voila, you will lose 52 pounds. About a pound a week. That's it, baby.
Not really. It carbs, watch those carbs as they are the true enemy. You watch the carb intake and the weight will drop off. Your body don't care where or what form the carbs come in. Learned the hard way with diabetes.
Truth to that, which makes it more interesting that we have so many US citizens that are well off financially, yet still making poor dietary choices. This would boil down to your comment on 'better education', where we just need to be more cognizant of what we're eating and how it affects our short-term and long-term health (body and mind).
And yet despite making up a full 1/3 to 2/3 of the population, department stores and indeed most clothing stores won't stock clothes that fit larger people. Its like they don't want to make money.
You'll not find a better basic treasure trove of facts about geography, economics and demographics than those in the CIA factbook. After all, that's their business. Simon and a truckload of other channels make their living off of mininng it. Don't trust it? Fool.
They had the money to fund research like this. Can't always rely on census data from each country and just compile that, though that may be exactly what they did.
Arizona is ranked #30 on the fattest states in the USA, but now that we know your ex wife lives there, we should probably redo the census. Excellent comment btw.
This list is based on percentage of fat people and not amount of fat people, the United States has way more obese people than the tiny islands that were in this list.
Thank you for inspiring me... it is 6:15 am, going to get ready for my bicycle trip of around 40km (normally 50, but I have a "freshman" with me, who has to build up)
The CIA is in the business of gathering data. Their fact book is the bible on basic geographical and demographic facts about the world. This and several other youtube channels have made a business of mining it.
Naga Revan Buy a small plot, plant a valuable crop, sell it to a local restaurant. Now your land pays it's self off while it pays AND feeds you. Ever heard of entrepreneurship?
I can make a salad with cut up chicken on top of the lettuce carrots onions etc and low fat cheese and I squeeze either a quarter orange lemon or lime as dressing and I eat some sort of chicken (never fried) for dinner every night almost not even $3 American! For all that learn how to shop
Naga Revan Sounds a lot like mindless speculation used to justify your lack of abilities. Don't project your ineptitude onto others, it only serves to oust yourself as inept.
Apparently enough skinny Mexicans to balance things out. If you look at the stats on this video, these people on average are most likely significantly larger than what you think of as 'obese' from the Mexican perspective.
As for the theory about long sea trips has an impact on polynesians being over weight, perhaps. But my ancestors lived up north in Europe. They also went on long sea trips and had to survive the winters of Norway. So I have heard that is the reason today they find hard to loose weight.
Aloha from Hawai'i. Your take on Polynesian, Micronesian obesity is clearly a Western view. Granted, healthy eating is a must for all. There is within the culture, which you do not share it seems, that a big man or woman are beautiful. In Hawaiian it is called MOMONA. The best hula is done by large women...it gives us here in Hawai'i what we call, "Chicken Skin"...Goose Bumps it is so very wonderful. We still love Spam: Regular, Less Salt, Jalappino, Filippino , Sausage Flavour, etc. the list goes on. It's part of the culture.
Numerically the USA with 93 million plus dangerously obese people has more than all the other ten so-called obese nations put together. Example: On an island with only two people who are both obese, the proportion of obese people in that land would be 100%.
That was really, really , really interesting. There were a few surprises, I learnt a heck of a lot. I though I had a weight problem but after watching that I feel really slim!!
Also, you're not going to cure obesity with exercise. Weight control is more than 80% diet. These folks need to lose the carbs and go on a diet full of meat, eggs, cheese, butter, coconut oil and non-starchy vegetables. They can eat as much as they want on that diet, it's very satisfying and filling and will drop pounds at an astounding rate.
you are a terrific guy and your vids are intelligent, interesting, and informative - so thanks much :} (in's not on purpose LOL.) One thing though, thank you for slowing down - it is very hard to listen to you when you talk so fast - not that i don't get it, just too much info every second :} i enjoyed this vid a lot, as usually, i have to slow the video down. Keep informing us - we appreciate it. (Oh, also, you do not condemn, you just state facts - that is fabulous and unusual. Are you into science or math - or maths, as you guys say? :}
In developed nations, healthy food is actually less expensive than fast food. Island nations may be cheaper do to import costs and loss of the ability to keep native diet due to the influx of large corporations
Simon: a number of times you suggest that these obese people don't exercise enough. There is no evidence in the scientific literature that you can lose a significant amount of weight through exercise. Exercise makes you hungrier and you eat more. The body stores fat when insulin is high. These people are fat because they eat foods that cause their insulin to be elevated (hyperinsulinemia). Constantly eating in a way that keeps your insulin to be high causes your cells to become insulin resistant, which causes your insulin to rise more in order to keep your blood sugars in check. Eventually, your insulin is high day and night and as a result, your body is always trying to store away fat and not make it available for supplying energy to the body. So, you are always hungry. In the medical literature this is called "internal starvation". The foods that most cause hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance are sugars, grains, and other refined carbohydrates. Removing these from the diet allows insulin levels to return to normal and, as a result, the body starts to burn fat for fuel and you get skinnier. Foods that cause the smallest insulin response are fats and proteins. All of this is well explained in the book "The Obesity Code" by Jason Fung.
The 'Pacific Islands' should be correctly identified as those with Polynesians in the population - the Pacific Islands with Melanesians are not obese - Vanuatu, Solomons, PNG and New Caledonia do not have an obesity problem ..
So I was thinking, does wealth accumulation in developing countries lead to its population that are "well off" to develop fatter kids because the access is now easier?
The islanders back in tonga samoa fiji and that are obiese But us islanders here in australia are fit as hell, I see built up bulky islanders goin for runs working out and all that
30 seconds in to the video and there is already a fatal error. 2/3 of Americans are overweight and obese is not necessarily true, that statistic is based off of the government BMI scale that takes into account height and weight but not muscle-mass or actual body fat percentages.
Sendentary lifestyle and fast/processed food. When I was growing up 80% of meals were home cooked and 20% were fast food and most of activities were outside (riding bikes, tag, hide and seek, hop scotch etc). Now a days 20% or less is home cooked and 80% is fast/processed food and activities are inside (video games, TV, tablets etc). Now we even have fast food delivery and grocery delivery so you can walk ten steps to an unhealthy meal.
Alot of it is economic. Some places are "food deserts" meaning it's difficult or expensive to get fresh veg. So ppl are stuck eating canned goods, processed food, and fast food, things like Top Ramen, Spam, etc. Because that's all they can afford/all that's available nearby. Obesity is largely a function of poverty. "Personal Responsibility" does not begin to address anything and just excuses nutritional Americanization.
America is a continent, not a country. What we need is healthy food to eat and be distributed in the world. Overweight is now more than underweight. The problem is that more junk food is cheaper than fresh fruits and vegetables. More unhealthier foods like burgers and pizza have been distributed around the world. There needs to be a change in the food system and more moving the body again.
