This video was awesome! I planted a lilac bush in honor of my mother when she passed. I remember as a kid if she ever saw one in bloom on the side of the road she would stop the car and get out and pluck some blooming branches off, bring them home and put them in a vase. 🤣 There were a lot on the side of the roads where we lived. Every time it blooms each year it reminds me of that memory and makes me smile. Thank you for this video and sharing this with us.

Although that wedding cake tree is something beautiful I'd never seen before. My fave tree remains a sycamore, though. But too big for a garden! I love them all but if I had to choose the paper bark has a very gorgeous trunk. I love also the birch trees. I had a Acer palmatum twice but I had to give up. Too sunny, too windy or maybe the alkaline soil 🥺 I loved your choice of trees, fantastic vídeo❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for your feedback, Fernanda. The paperbark is so lovely. You may have seen that no. 4 Prunus serrula, the birch bark, got referred to as paper bark by me 😝 It's nice too but I think Acer griseum, the real paper bark has the edge.
my favourite is #10, how nice of your mother to get them for you, very nice way to remember her. I can only dream of those trees as I am in Canadian hardiness zone 5A (US H4) 😃
uh oh Rachel, you've chosen the same #1 as I would from the list. 🤯 Now I do enjoy the look of a weeping willow (Salix babylonica) in a temperate garden, probably because my grandmother had a huge one in her yard and it felt like a hidden world under the canopy in summer. They look pretty glorious in winter, too, if you get an ice storm and the branches get coated in ice. And a mature weeping cherry can really make a statement for the same reason but you get that profusion of pink blooms in spring to boot. I suppose there's only so much room, you can't plant them all...
Hi Michael. I totally agree with you about the weeping willow. It is a magnificent tree. There are two in the nearest town to me and I always stop to admire them. I did want a willow but was too afraid of its size so wimped out in the end and got that detestable runt of a willow excuse, Salix caprea 'Kilmarnock'. I got fed up with it in the end and it went to compost heaven about two years ago.
@@GardeningatDouentza I'm sorry, I'm just laughing at the way you've described the caprea. If you could go back in time, would you tell yourself to get the babylonica, despite probably not having the garden in its current form to accommodate it?
@@michaelmccarthy4077 I'm not sure I'd get a big willow even if I could go back in time. If I could plant under it maybe I would. So many trees with big canopies are very inhospitable at the roots to other plants.
Your Magnolia is magnificent. I know white magnolias we float a single flower in a bowl in the South here in the US. Have you ever thought of acquiring Crepe Myrtles? There are some that could be grown in Wicklow's climate. A few years ago I shared my dream with my dear friend Derek O'Neill of planting naturally germinated native trees in Ireland that would pesticide free to preserve ground water which has been poisoned by accumulated nitrates and chemicals from fertilizers detergents etc I explained how sap and pine oils from EU recommended sitka pines were contaminating soil and killing off native fish. The ground around them is like that around rhododendrons. Derek decided to gather together like minded souls and last I heard 7500 trees were planted in Co. Rosscommon. I am so very thrilled Rachel. The mulch produced over time from fallen leaves will replenish the soil. Everyone who participated pledged to go pesticide free in their gardens. The absolute icing on the cake is that children did it. I grew up on stories of how magnificent our forests once were. I love the no 1 golden rain ... Once I ve found a seedling between pavement near such a tree in my city. I could grow it in a pot the first two years but I gave it away This tree needs a lot of space ... for an abundance of golden rain ... ( last year I ve planted peach trees ...special dwarf varieties for containers .... Can't wait for the spring flowering ...and hopefully a good harvest.) Congratulations ....well done ... nice video.

I do love the laburnum and will tend to agree with Marcus. Kids need to be taught not to put plants in their mouths. So many are poisonous. My four kids were very aware of this always. I had planned to mention the poisonous element of the laburnum in the video. It was in my notes but I forgot to mention it. It's important not to plant laburnum hanging over a pond with fish as it will kill the fish.

@@marcusseidel4088 Thank you for asking this again. I couldn't find who or where this question was asked. before. Yes, holly (ilex) is dioecious so you need a male and female plant to get berries. I guess you might be able to tell if the plant is male or female if it were in flower but the other way is to buy a cultivar. Cultivars are genetically the same as the plant they are cloned from so if the original was male the clone will be too. I have Ilex x altaclerensis 'Golden King', a beautiful variegated plant. It is female, despite the cultivar name confusingly having the name 'king' in it 😜 Ilex aquifolium 'Silver Queen' is male. Hope this helps.
What a wonderful post ! Lots of ideas as I just had my garden done and only have 2 small trees right now. I would love to have a Japanese maple and but I don't think I have the patience to wait 😅. I think I'll get the cornus controversa as it is very bright and pretty, also the Himalayan birch ! I also love the Tibetan cherry.. decisions, decisions 😜🥴xx
Wonderful presentation of small trees. Would love to visit your gardens when I get over to Ireland. Long way from my place down under. The Cornus controversa 'variegata' was my favourite. I have put in two Cornus kousa which are dogwoods that have a similar size to your 'controversa'. One is the 'Autumn Rose' variety and the other is the 'Trinity Star" which is also a variegated similar in leaf to your controversa. Hoping they grow to be as spectacular as yours. Getting three seasons of differing beautiful effects out of these small dogwoods is fantastic.

@@dannygallagherfluidart7276 It's your decision of course. From my point of view I always brought my four children up not to eat plants. Many are poisonous and not as well known as laburnum. For example, foxglove, which pops up everywhere, is deadly poisonous.

You have got some beauties on your 2020 tree list. I'm still trying to take out dead trees in my garden and treat others, but this spring I am definitely planting at least 2. I have had my eye on the Japanese maple both green and purple in our local garden centre. I do like the look of your Cornus Controversa variegata as I am looking for a tree to substitute the Alder tree we took down last month, but I don't know if I am going to be able to find it here, but yours is really gorgeous. I love your Himalayan Birch avenue with copper birch hedging 😍 It's also my favourite tree for cold climates. You might like Eucalyptus Alba which also has a beautiful white trunk and branches with the added benefit of flowers and evergreen leaves. I have a couple of videos of my tree in Cork but they don't show the amazing white bark that appears when the outer bark sheds each year. The root system is vigorous too. I didn't know that himalayan birch had shallow roots, thanks for the info 🙂👍
Many eucalyptus trees have beautiful bark and your alba is doing so well after its winter set back. The last eucalyptus I grew died in the cold winters of 2010, both of them. If I wasn't full up for trees I might have tried one again. I just subscribed to your channel.
@@GardeningatDouentza So sorry to hear about your Eucalyptus trees dying in the freezing 2010! I arrived in Ireland in 2011 and have heard the stories. Do you remember what varieties they were? It's hard finding a Eucalyptus feature tree that doesn't grow too big and can handle the cold. Thanks for subscribing! I'll be back in Ireland in August next year to do a garden update.

Great video! I've been looking for new ornamental trees for my garden. And we're currently preparing an area of our property for a backyard orchard so i am also thinking of good fruit trees 😅. I loved your magnolia and himalayan birch(such a sweet memory) I have a question- Do you know the difference between part shade and part sun? Are they the same thing?
How exciting to be preparing for an orchard. You will have pies and jellies coming out your ears in a few years 😄 I haven't really come across the term 'part sun' as publications tend to mention 'part shade' but they really should be the same thing.
Great video, I love trees especially flowering ones and ones with lovely peeling bark. The laburnum flowers are obviously very wisteria-esque, wonderful looking tree, there is one type called Laburnocytisus which is a cross between laburnum and a cytisus and has two different colours of flowers on it. That magnolia looks lovely, magnolia grandiflora is another variety that has very big flowers too but in white, there are smaller varieties available for gardens. I have a cornus tree too, I went for the cornus kousa variety which has three seasons of interest, with big flowers, big berries and autumn colour. I might have gone for a cherry blossom tree if I had enough room in my garden but I would have went for a single flowered variety for the bees. Do you have any aesculus trees they are supposed to be good for late spring flowers. I have one myself (Aesculus indica Sydney Pearce) and I am looking forward to it flowering. I would have liked to have a birch too if I had enough room in my garden.

The aesculus have never flowered and I agree that laburnocytisus is the strangest thing. Saw it once at a friend's and was astonished. Thanks for watching and sharing and happy growing.

Not sure. Anyway I recently got a grandiflora magnolia myself the stamens of the flowers are supposed to be good for bees and beetles and they look amazing too.

Hi there. Newly planted magnolias can take several years to settle before starting into flower. Manure should help your magnolia along. Good luck with it. You should be able to join memberships! I am not aware of any country restrictions. Hope you do join.
You recently gave us a tour of some lady's garden. I cannot remember her name. Maybe it was Dillon's Gardens. I dont remember. I saw a tropical plant that i would like to get. You mentioned the name of the plant but i dont know how to write it. It was something like roschia or something like that. The plant was growing in a pot next to the wall. It grew like a canna with more slender leaves. The leaves were green with a white stripe in the middle. The blooms were a gorgeous purple or deep lavender color. Can you give me the name of the plant? Id like to get one. If you can please send me the name of the plant.
