I know Im asking randomly but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Jameson Kasen I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you so much for this video and sharing your expertise! I have been struggling for 2 days, since the power return after 5 days without, to get the water heater relit and your explanation helped me to see what I was doing wrong. Here's to a hot shower, FINALLY!
Cannot thank you enough for putting together this excellent video! Saved me a lot of time, money, and trouble. Thanks to you, after a couple of hours I had the new parts and a working water heater, you sir are an absolute mensch!
The idea that a spiderweb was messing up my ignition! That shows practical experience. A very straightforward explanation, and a total lifesaver after our pilot light needed lit. Thanks!
I can't fix sh%$t! With all this explanation, I'm still afraid I'm gonna blow everything up if I try. I guess I'm gonna have to get ripped off by some plumber.
Lol Iagree I have know ideal what to do are how to do it so Iam getting an professional to do it I will feel much safer then trying to do it myself like you said Iam scare I will blow up the house 😊
Thank you very much. Now how do i make the flame small again? lol I am a master wireman, and my wife was hoping for an explosion when I put it all back together
Thanks so much for posting this tutorial. The demo model you used was quite similar to my water heater setup, so, it gave me the confidence to take out the burner assembly and replace the thermocouple. Problem solved. I now have hot water again, and, it only cost me $13! With much appreciation - Steve
Great Job! Not many like you. Your not playing games. You Truthful want to help people in detail. Plus leaving all important detail covered. Great job. After tearing the heater apart. I felt like a hero for my family. The next morning the temperature dropped. Yet people need to have at least some common since on understand that this is gas so read very correctly before proceeding. Thank yup
At the 2:20 mark you helped me figure out how to get my heater fixed. I just held down the pilot light longer than two minutes to warm up and get that magnet to kick in
OMG!! I followed the instructions labeled on my water heater and watched at least 3 or 5 other RU-vid videos all have incorrect instructiona to light up the Pilot light. I noticed and followed your settings from the beginning of the clip to light up the pilot and it worked. OMG! Thank you.
Very very very helpful video. After pressing the ignitor I didnt think it was lit until your video showed me it burns very low & clean until depressing the pilot button & turning up the heat. Thanks alot sir, you saved me a serivce call for something super simple. Clicking the thumbs up button in this video
Hi. In my case is that when it reaches the desired temperature and the burner stops, the pilot flames goes out too. What could it be that’s causing this?
Thank you for making such an excellent video that explains all of the many possible issues with a water heater pilot light. You should be teaching classes at your local trade school!! Anyway I woke up Sunday morning to no hot water. I tried lighting my pilot several times without success After watching your video I tried the 1st thing - the igniter wasn't grounded. I cleaned out the area and made sure it was touching the gas control box Then I tried it again and SUCCESS!!! Pilot lit!!!! Again thank you for making this video and sharing your vast knowledge with homeowners I greatly appreciate it!!!!
My spark wire wasn't grounded right. Two different plumbers talking about, "be a few days." 5 min into the video had my answer and fixed it myself. Appreciate the video man
Im getting the hull thing to light but like it should but it dies after a few seconds a little light in the middle stays on for about 1 min but the shuts off can u help???
I'm getting the same problem... getting someone to look at it but over the phone he kinda insisted I should just buy new water heater... I just wanna fix it not replace it that's why I'm watching this video a million times lol trying to understand him
Thanks. Excellent video with clear explanation. Now I understand why our gas hot water heater may not be igniting; lack of spark or lack of gas to pilot. Simple issues but getting a techie to come out and do the job probably will require that I take out a second mortgage to pay for multiple visits before it gets sorted. And that excludes travelling time and tool time and apprentice 's costs. Buying and fitting new unit is probably less expensive.
Thank you so much for this! I had tried over and over again to light the pilot on my water heater but after watching this video, it took me less that 2 minutes! I was getting ready to call in a professional!! You save me lots of money!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Judging by the gas valve, that's a much older unit than what I deal with on an almost daily basis. Most of the water heaters I work on are 10+ years old and use thermopiles, not thermocouples. They generally also have gas valves with diagnostic light. I've never had a spark ignitor fail because they are rarely used in the lifespan of the unit and I've worked on tons of water heaters. Most of the pilot lights go out because the burner compartment needs to be cleaned/vaccuumed and/or water heater needs to be flushed of sediment that's causing the limit switch to keep tripping.
What? Limit switch to keep tripping?? Please elaborate.. My pilot has never went out before until today, but now it won't stay lit or let me turn the heat dial up bcuz it goes out quickly after holding the button down more than a minute. I did notice in the past that some days there's really hot water & other days just warm but not hot water. Don't know if that's bcuz of wind in exhaust flue or not?
Hey Wiz.. so what's the best type of cleaner to clean the orifices with that won't leave a residue behind, carburetor cleaner? I also use pure orange oil degreaser type soap/solvent, then rinse with water & dry when cleaning auto parts etc.. Also, can anodes be accessed to be cleaned of hard water or are they inaccessible?
@@jhenry0688 - I don't use chemicals to clean the orifices. I use a small wire brush to remove the soot. This isn't usually where the problems occur, though. The biggest issue is buildup of soot in the burner compartment and/or sediment in the tank. The soot and sediment acts as an insulator and the heat from the burner isn't transferred very easily to the water trapping the heat in the burner compartment. Since the heat can't escape, this trips the high limit safety switch and shuts down the water heater. The soot should be brushed off the top and sides of the burner compartment and vacuumed out. To remove sediment from the tank, flush the water heater. Also be sure that the air inlet on the bottom of the burner compartment is not blocked. As far as the anode, most of these can be removed with a socket wrench.
This video is GREAT. Covered the reasons things don't work, not just how to replace them. Brand new water heater install, Piezo doesn't work, not grounded. Works now. Thank you!!!
Whats the minimum voltage you need for a thermal couple to hold down the solenoid the valve ? I thought I heard you say 3 mV? My experience and it could be for a variety of reasons seems to be 12-9mV or less its not working. 15-30mV seems to be healthy , Thanks!
All in all an excellent video. I do have some issue with your explanation of the thermal fuse. At about 15:45 you state that the fuse shouldn’t “pop“ and open up unless there is no water in the tank, i disagree. The thermal fuse is a safety measure in the event of an overheating condition to keep water below the boiling point. If you look at the rating of the fuse is is probably around 91C (195 F) temperature, once the threshold is met, the fuse opens the electrical circuit from the thermocouple, pilot light is extinguished and the water heater will shut down because the pilot light will no longer be lit. The thermocouple must be hot at all times in order for gas to flow. You will note the pilot light and thermocouple are below the main burner, if the pilot light is not heating the thermocouple (even if the main burner is burning) the solenoid will be released and the gas valve will shut off gas flow to the appliance.
Maybe this is my problem, but I'm really green with this experience, could you possibly read my 2 comment posts & let me know what you think is my problem? I think that it's the metal deal that's not heating & keeping the pilot lit. That part of the video threw me off when he was explaining that one. Not sure.. maybe I have ADHD? I think I'll just clean the burner compartment & take a metal scrub brush to all parts that take LP gas bcuz I'm not a technician. I saw another Rheem pilot video where they talked about a fail safe feature, glass deal with black oil inside it that breaks when there's an issue & causes the pilot to shut down. The guy never said what model he had so not sure if my Rheem has one or not? I think my model is a Rheem classic. Wish the plumber would have installed a different brand bcuz I'm not at all impressed with Rheem & all the videos where customers are having multiple issues with these.
Where do we get that particular thermocouple tester? at 2:13 that your plunging the solenoid having it clear like that you can see what’s actually happening is great.
Good afternoon. Sorry for bothering you. I may have two issues. A.O. Smith ProMax waterheater. J06J018610 Suddenly, had no hot water. Everything looked good. Turned red selector on top off. Turnd counterclockwise to piolet. Turned temp selector to piolet. Hit sparker several times. Could not see spark in little window. Tried several times. Red button seemed to pop-up, but could not turn to off position. Tried to turn top red selector clockwise to off several Should I not worried about the red selector and attempt to work on the sensor, coupler? Where do I go from here? Thank you. Dean
Pilot light seems to blow itself out, like there's to much pressure coming out the Oriface. I took the assembly out and it was clogged. I used a stainless micro fiber from a wire brush smaller the the hole, maybe .005", and was able the clear the debris. The hole is so small you have to hold it up to a light to see through it. I do machine work so I knew not to change the hole size. Any ideas on why it blows itself out. The unit is probably 25 years old, but was fairly clean inside and has always been a good unit, and has always been hard to start.
pilot light on. flames not exiting burner. tapped around the control valve and flames came on. replace control valve or clean it/ lubricate after disassembly? it's 25 years old!
This is an awesome video lesson on household water heater. By far, the best I’ve ever watched. There’s a lot of science of physics on water heaters and HVAC ( laws of thermodynamics, electricity, even chemistry). Sadly, Americans today take from granted and casual, these appliances that makes our lives much better. I soon will be enrolled in a 3 week, deep hands on HVAC, no fluff program, to become a technician and then later on a certified HVAC man! Thank you very much for this video. I already do water heaters installations for people but never learned these troubleshooting at once like this. Thanks !
My manual thermal limit keeps tripping and I already replaced the thermocouple..what should I do next? I see you were talking about a thermal fuse. Would that cause it to trip..my gas water boiler starts and it lights up but within 10 minutes the manual thermal limit trips and it all shuts down..
Is the burner assembly for a natural gas water heater different than one for a propane? I just wanna switch assemblies out, but the water heater I’m working on is propane. I’m having trouble finding an assembly that actually says for propane.
So much knowledge in this video. I feel confident in going home and seeing if I can troubleshoot my water heater. One area I didn't notice where you address some possible solutions is when the wind blows out the pilot light. When it's windy in my area, which is almost all the time, I can almost certainly expect to have to go home and relight the pilot. Any tips on how to fix this?
Fantastic Video. I'm having a problem with my spark ignitor grounding out somewhere or corrosion on the ignitor rod inside. I tested the ignitor and it is producing a spark. The spark isn't making its way inside. I'm guessing it's corrosion since if I press the ignitor enough I finally get a spark inside. Once the pilot is lit I can see a spark every time I press the ignitor.
Although this is an in-depth look at almost all the things that could be wrong, but as my dad once said, start with the stupid simple things first. The most simple explanation as to why a pilot keeps going out is a lack of air flow. I mean, how are things getting bent inside a closed system that has no moving parts? It's much more likely that something is clogging the air intake
Thank you for this instructional video. I wanted to add. We just had our central air gas heater exchanged. The technician shut off the gas to install the new system. The new HVAC heating works GREAT. However, when I got up this morning we had no hot water. The pilot light went out when they installed the new system. I tried a dozen times to reignite the pilot on the water heater, but nothing. However, when the tech installed the new HVAC system and turned off the gas into the house, it evacuated the entire gas line leading into the water heater, and because of the tiny orifice on the pilot light, it took forever for gas to refill into the pilot gas line. You follow me? So, I had to hold down on the pilot button forever until gas refilled the line and the igniter finally worked. I was freaking out. "It is this or that?" for an entire hour. Anyway.... we got hot water again! Thanks Coach!
The pilot light ignites and stays lit...when I turn the temperatthe minute I turn the temperature mfrom ofure on (click) it ignites but then blows out the pilot and the burner...I can hear the gas flowing because the thermocoupler is hot but nothing is burning. I see the spark and the pilot light stays on when I turn it from pilot to on....but the moment the temperature is turned up the flame comes on and then drops dead
I noticed some techs "heat" the copper part of the thermocouple to ignite a flame. Heat is applied and then you hear a small "bing" on the gas valve. This buys some working time until they arrive with a new part.
Damn Brother, great video. I wish I had found u earlier. I do alot of maintenance at a veterans home o live at right now and we have been having water issue problems. It clicks the pilot on but heater won't light
This is a great video! I have been without hot water since the LP ran out a week ago. Its been filled since then but the water heater will not light. I took it apart and cleaned the little pieces inside still have spark but after putting back together it still wont light BUT there is a change since I cleaned the inside bits. When I remove my hand from the pilot button i hear the 2 clicks he talks about at 12:00 but he doesnt explain in terms I can understand what they mean. Is it something that relates to my issue??? Someone put there help this lady out...😂
So in my situation i can get the burner going. Spark is good, gas seems to be good and what not. I turn ln the burner fully and its going and about the 3-4 min mark i notice the flame starts dancing way to much and slowly the flame starts dying out on one side of burner until it just dies out completely. I noticed the tube that feeds the flame to the burner dies out to and causes the burner to die out after. So my question is, the little tube that supplies gas to the spark is that suppose to stay on indefinitely or suppose to turn off? Or is it my thermocouple? Like i said the start up is smooth and can get the burner going but it’s a matter of time before it dies out.
My pilot light has stayed lit over night when the water was alternating heated, after I manually turned it on. But as soon as it lights the main burner it goes out after 8 or so minutes. I replaced the pilot assembly including thermocouple and I have the same issue 😔
What about ... pilot lights easily and stays lit for awhile, and then shuts off some hours later ... and there's no reason to suspect wind or negative air pressure?
My thermocouple got wet so the pilot light wouldn't stay lit. Helpful video, now to fix the water leak that led me to this troubleshooting video to begin with hahahaha
When I sprayed soapy water on all the gas lines there is a huge bubble at the bottom of the thermostat box. I can't tell where it's coming from any ideas?
The Pilot keeps going out after the water heats, it new thermalcoupling that i have replaced, it worked great for three months the issue occurs Any hints
There is an ECO connection between the thermocouple and the gas valve. There are contacts on both sides of a wafer like thing that is between the threaded end of the thermocouple and the valve is there a way to get the pilot to stay lit if the ECO connection is bad
Pilot lighting but even after holding down the reset for over a minute pilot goes out when i release the reset button, coupler the issue ? I have a Whirlpool gas water heater
This is the last video anyone needs to watch when it comes to fixing your problem /problems your having with your waterheater. But if you still can't solve your problem after watching this video? Then im guessing your that type of guy who's microwave is still blinking "12:00" over & over again & has black electrical tape over his check engine light in his car. Basically what im im trying to say is "you'll really like this video"! K. Keown Evansville, In
What if the point where the gas released for the full flame has "moved up" It now doesnt turn on until it reaches A? Is there an adjustment that needs to be made?
Hello. Been having problems with my Richmond water heater. It light up fine a about 15-25min but after that it shuts off completely, no pilot flame either. And won't turn back on until it cools off. If I keep "hot" water running the flame will stay on. What could be my problem? Thank you in advance for any help.
