Dude I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you. The fact that you still make videos on GOT is actually crazy. I’m glad you haven’t moved on just yet. The first and biggest murder in the story is that of Stannis. Having his daughter burned in his presence, when in the books she remained at Castle Black, remains the series' first major aberration. Stannis deserved much better than his treatment in season 5, just because of the showrunners' hatred for his character.

I could absolutely believe that Stannis burns Shireen, even watching as it happens; IF it was to save mankind as "Azor Ahai", seeing it as his duty. If he was willing to sacrifice Edric Storm, shouldn't he be willing to sacrifice his own child? The biggest issue for me is that I see Stannis as a man who cares deeply and genuinely for duty, who has two advisors, one on each shoulder, put oversimplified arguing for utilitarianism and deontology. Melisandre presents the argument that since Stannis is the Chosen One, he has a carte blanche to do whatever, because if he fails, the world falls with him. Davos argues that a bastard boy is "Everything", even against a kingdom. Burning a child alive is never, ever the right thing to do. Stannis' story, for me at least, is so compelling because of how this struggle to determine what is Right intersects so well with Stannis' history. Stannis is the charmless middle child feeling unwanted and slighted, deeply sceptical of being told he is Special, but eventually coming to believe it, in part because of the "evidence" he sees, but also because deep down he wants so badly to be wanted and seen. He ends up believing in a lie, as we humans so often do, that's just our nature; but it will, I think, lead Stannis to do desperate things "for the greater good", all in vain, all because he fell prey to our fallible human nature that is so hard to make work with a utilitarian approach to morality. Stannis is such a compelling, flawed tragic figure, and I think the show really failed to grasp that.
@betcheck
@betcheck 7 месяцев назад
Indeed, Stannis' character was poorly treated during season 5. But I think that even if his choice is unforgivable, sacrificing his daughter perfectly completes his narrative arc: Stannis is so convinced of his destiny that he's willing to effectively give everything to fulfill it. It was also one of the show's most heartbreaking and moving moments, and it's why we love GoT. Best of all, it was also one of only three post-book events that GRR Martin revealed to D & Dumber before they took over the script (the other two being why "Hodor" and Bran becomes king at the end).

I actually agree with SupercutsDelight's argument that after losing everything - his honor, his friends, Cersei, his children and family it wouldn't be out of place for Jaime to say 'I never really cared about the people' because in the end it appears that noone cares about him. However, the way Dumb and Dumber set it up the same line is absolutely abismal.

@@Star-wb2ov The argument is, it's possible that somewhere down the line, Jaime *stopped* caring. He did break his oath to save thousands of people, and all it got him was being hated by everyone. It would be believable that, since trying to do the right thing only blows up in his face, Jaime reached a breaking point and became numb. Of course, that's not the storyline we got, and saying that he *never* cared definitely was stupid.

Yes, she's losing everything, and now the lioness is backed into a corner And there's no way she was liked by the population after the explosion, yet they seek refuge close to the castle, it's not at all weird to think that she would feel that they are an enemy as well, because the prophecy is about to kick in anyway. And look how the general population treated her during her walk of shame.. and there has been previous hatred towards the rulers of the 7 kingdoms, Cersei never quite understood this as well as Margaery did. So Dany comes, does Cersei leave anything to anyone really? Is it her possible escape to die quickly? Perhaps this backfires and wildfires go of here and there not even leaving something for Dany to rule over, her dragons being responsible for creating a very deadly chain reactions... this is more likely to cause her to lose her marbles as well...as she is part of committing genocide, now she would just rule over ashes

She makes ruthless decisions theres no doubt about that but so do many of the other characters in this show but no ones call any of their acts madness because they are not Targs. I'm not saying that she wasn't headed down that path at some point, but you gotta build up to that in a logical way. I swear the one who hurt the most was Jaime. The guy had one of the best redemption arcs in the history of televison (hell, I'll dare say it, and of CINEMA), and it was all thrown away. He should have died on the battle of Winterfell, alongside Theon, protecting Bran, bringing the redemption arc of both characters full circle to a satisfying conclusion
@alucard00774

As much as I hate season 8 there's no denying that Jaime's arc came full circle. He was ALWAYS conflicted between honor and loyalty but he never questioned his love for his family and Cersei. He was a Hateful man for doing the right thing (killing the Mad King) and we see how Jaime constantly struggle with right from wrong because the line is blurred because of blind loyalty, oaths and honor. That's what the whole "fuck loyalty" arc was about... In the very first episode he said "Things I do for love" and later in the show we realize that he would do anything for Cersei no matter what.

Honorable mentions: - Stannis Baratheon: no words needed - Barristan Selmy: just letting him die in the streets is a huge facepalm for me - Rickon Stark: the books say he is on Skagos at the moment, a really interesting place, and D&D just kill him off - the heir of Winterfell - Ellaria Sand: I`m not including the sandsnakes or Doran, because they were shit from the beginning in the show, but her introduction as Oberyns lover was spot-on for me, but as soon as she was back in Dorne she went down with the whole Dorne-plot - Kingslanding: I know a city is not a character, but back in the early seasons we saw how they reacted on how they were ruled and how things were handled under Joffrey. In the books Sansa never met, married or was raped by Ramsey Bolton… D&D used that BS story arc to create sympathy for a completely unsympathetic character because at this time in the books Sansa was still a rotten spoiled 11 year old brat who was just like her cruel mother.

Indeed, Littlefinger was completely in love with Sansa. It seems like his plan in the book is to get Sansa to marry Robin and take over the Arryn kingdom. Presumably Robin would fall by the wayside and Littlefinger would get both Sansa and the East. In comparison, giving Sansa to the _Boltons_ of all people makes no sense, either strategically or emotionally.

Remember that Tyrion said that Sansa's real strength of will was the ability to see what she really needed to do and make it not obvious that is what she is doing. Then Season 8 Sansa attributes her growth through the pain she has been in, which is fyi very toxic.

Like ask yourself why arya, who is such a shit character in the show's later seasons, is so beloved while sansa is the most hated? Because sexism. People love Arya cause she's a psycho who is a tomboy, has masculine features. So they decided to make Sansa motivated by r*pe, flexing it. Which is antithetical to the sansa character in the books.
@iroseart3369
@iroseart3369 7 месяцев назад
@7PlayingWithFire7 it's misogyny disguised in feminism. Arya being a ruthless and capable female character is good on paper, but the show wants us to see Sansa as "weaker" cuz she doesn't take on masculine traits and characteristics to survive like Arya did. The show doesn't want us to believe Sansa is strong for being smart and capable in her own way, rather her strength has to be rooted in the violence done to her for being "too womanly". Very sick stuff
@johnnye87
@johnnye87 Месяц назад
@@7PlayingWithFire7 Yeah I like the contrast in the books between Arya, who openly rejects the damsel-in-distress role and finds a way to forge her own path, and Sansa, who learns to lean into that role. She makes her enemies (and lots of readers...) underestimate her, but she also learns to make people love her, and we haven't seen how that will play out. I see her ultimately getting a similar vindication to Ned's style of leadership (though hopefully without the beheading) - that while both she and her father looked like naive patsies in the short term, the ability to inspire true loyalty and devotion in people is extremely powerful when you're fighting against opportunists who are hated & feared by their own allies. Case in point: Dontos was a patsy, and Sansa was foolish for trusting him. But if he was loyal to Littlefinger, then why did Littlefinger have to kill him? Because his devotion to Sansa was true enough that LF knew he couldn't trust him not to take her side in the long run. Maybe "life is not a song", but the series has shown us a lot of knights - Jaime, Barristan, Brienne, even Sandor - who really do WANT to be riding a white horse to defend the honour of a beautiful princess, if only the world were really like that, so giving them that fantasy to fight for is not something that should be underestimated. Assuming everyone is as cynical as you are is the cynic's greatest blind spot.

They get nothing out of Bran the Broken being king. I mean christ the new king gave away the biggest kingdom just cause big sister asked. While we don't see much of the Reach because they whittled it down to two families there are still likely families like the Hightowers and the Redwynes who aren't gonna be pleased that a sellsword has been made Lord of Highgarden and Lord Paramount over them. So there goes the Reach. As for the Westerlands are they gonna have any respect for the new hand who by all accounts is a kinslayer?

@@Chrissykat24 I think they already had Jon Snow beyond the wall planned before it ended so they needed a conclusion that fit their plans so everything else was collateral damage. They’ll make a shit ton of money from the spin-off and they sacrificed GoT for it. Bronn absolutely should have died saving Jamie in ‘The Spoils of War’ his story after that was pretty defunked and it was completely absurd to have a man who betrayed everyone he met as master of coin. I think the writers thought he was better liked by the audience than he was. Sending Jamie back to Kings Landing was also ridiculous, it completely wasted his redemption arc. It's debatable wether he raped Cersei in the books. The chapter in question is written from his point of view, so it is written in a way to justify his deed. But Cersei literally said no and beat him before giving up resistance.

I would also argue that Jon is completely useless in season 8, like Arya. He became a bystander. During the long night he had nothing to do. His storyline as a Targaryen wasn't important at all - except for the fact that it was used as a plot device to drive Dany more "insane". But it had nothing to do with Jon. And this is why they decided he should kill Daenerys, so that he had something to do in the finale. It's so sad.

I'd say the very first character who was wasted by poor writing, was Barristan Selmy. He's one of the most legendary knights of Westeros who served the Mad King. He could have been a major player later on and especially for the mad queen plot. Instead, he was jumped by a bunch of thugs in an alleyway that served no purpose to his or anyone's character development, nor did it drive a plot. He was only killed so that David and Dan could meet their shock value quotas. It's a shame, considering how interesting of a character he was and the potential he could bring.

They literally had two better endings for Cersei with Arya and Jamie. They could either fully redeem Jamie by having him kill Cersei (which makes sense since he was all about protecting the people). And it would be heartbreaking for both of them. Or have Arya kill Cersei using Jamie's face (which she would finally use the faceless skills on the final season and kill another one of her list). Plus, imagine the scene of having Cersei feel super-extra betrayed seeing her brother stab her and before dying seeing Arya remove the face, feeling that not only she was killed by a Stark, but that her brother is also dead. I think that would be so much more impactful then a bunch of bricks and an incest love story... And Bran... Imagine having a character with literal super-powers and the guy just stares, stares some more, says one-liners, stares and uses his powers once or twice in some crows. And then stares some more. And I think you forgot one other character that was ruined: The Night King. He was a silent menace. A dude with super-powers that could create new walkers. A guy that has a massive army. Mysterious and magical. What do they do? Nothing. The guy is defeated in ONE NIGHT. And on top of that they never explained his motivation. More of his backstory. Nothing. I agree with all of these, but my biggest disappointments were the 3 Lannisters. I 100% agree with what you said on Tyrion. With Jamie, I was so mad when, instead of following the book version's path of separating himself from Cersei when she writes the letter saying she needs him, show-Jamie seems to re-dedicate himself to her, so we never get the fascinating inner conflict of him coming to terms with the fact that she's toxic. I subscribe to the theory that Jamie will end up being the valonquar and I thought the Jon-stabbing-Dany scene would play out between Jamie and Cersei instead. With Cersei, I couldn't believe how little the death of Tommen affected her. Her children were her life and that was such a huge part of her character, but her last and youngest child jumped out of a window because of her actions and she just took his throne and moved on. She wanted to be the knight out on the battle field, having adventures, not standing around a castle all day. Their enemies were all defeated and her family was avenged. There was nothing for her to protect anymore, so it was hardly some big betrayal or change in character to leave once the revenge was completed and safety was ensured. I also just didn't that it was necessary for her to even be anywhere near Ramsay. She was already trapped in the lion's den at King's Landing. Why build her back up at the Vale if you're just going to break her back down again with Ramsay? I thought that was a weird plot, not to mention very out of character on Littlefinger's part.

Stannis needed to be on this list. Kind of for the same reason as Euron. He was ruined in adaptation. The story beats are there from the books. They are just mangled. They show him out right having sex with Melissandre and have him out right murder Renly, both of which aren't true for the books. Stannis explains that he was asleep when Renly died and should have been preparing to do battle. So he cannot have intended to kill Renly using magic if he was going to do battle. Clearly he was not aware of the exact methods Melissandre intended to use against Renly. The second strike against Stannis is when the writers make him go hat in hand to the Iron Bank to beg for money. In the book it was the reverse: he was seen as reliable and able to win by the bank, as they sent their agents to seek him out and give him money so he can become king and make good on the debts of the Iron Throne. They also remove how much Tywin and Randyll, some of the most competent and feared commanders and leaders, are afraid of Stannis or at least see him as very dangerous. "Stannis will fight to the bitter end and then some." They turn Stannis into a desperate madman, when book Stannis in the same desperation tells people not to burn people but pray harder. They make him sacrifice his heir, when in the books he tells Justin Massey to use the money from the Iron Bank to put Shireen on the throne if Stannis is killed. Then they produce handwavy writing to cause Stannis' army to be desperate and have him use no scouts and have him march into charging enemy cavalry and have Brienne bump into him on the battlefield and kill him. Just unfair. He deserved so much better.

I maintain that cutting such pivotal characters/plots from the story are the biggest issues for these characters' storylines. Cause cutting out Young Griff is detrimental to Dany: the false dragon thing would cause so much conflict for her and actually explain why she would torch King's Landing. Cutting out the valonquar part of Cersei's prophecy ruined her ending and Jaime's (cause I'm certain Jaime is meant to kill her but they chose to have Jon kill Dany instead so they couldn't do it twice). And cutting Lady Stoneheart is what ruined Arya because so much of Arya's story is tied to the Riverlands and justice and revenge and how she's on a collision course with the husk of her mother and is going to give the gift of death to finally put Caitlyn's revenge quest to rest. Caitlyn slaughtering the Frey's makes way more sense than Arya doing it and turning into a weird psycho killer. And the gall that Dan and Dave had saying 'who has a better story than Bran the Broken?' when they were the ones to fully cut him out for an entire season is astonishing.

Season 1-4 were so good I felt like I was watching history in the making. But after that I felt like I was watching my childhood hero developing a drug addiction. I’m glad I never finished the whole series, I could sense the problems occurring.

Show-Euron literally only had one/ two moments where he seemed *truly* frightening- when he first came onto Yara's ship, he brought the Jack Sparrow-meets-Freddie Krueger terror a person like Book-Euron was capable of- & a bit later, when he was fighting the Sand Snakes- he struck me as ruthless & scary. It gets undercut by every other scene that he has- but those were the moments that showed his potential. I suppose the only argument that _could_ be made with his 'Hot Topic guyliner swagger pirate'-act, is precisely that- that it's an act - but wouldn't that necessitate there being more connective tissue between the two? Letting the audience see just *how much* of an act that his public/ courtly behaviour is? It comes across as really weak characterisation, in the end- not a surprise that they failed so monumentally on deeper writing levels, given 'themes were for 8th Grade book reports'...

Even in his attack on Yara's ship that was really more of a Victarion thing

I think these ruinations all come down to two things: D&D wanting to hard subvert expectations without realizing how to properly do that and them not being smart enough to write for smart characters.

See if Dany’s arc into darkness had been handled and executed as well as Jinx’s from Arcane, maybe I wouldn’t hate it so much. But because they rushed it so badly, it didn’t come from a genuine place and it never felt like it was earned in the way it should be. Jinx starting a war after embracing herself as the forever failure she’s never been able to escape? That’s powerful. Dany torching an entire city? A decision not built up to or earned by the writers in the way it should be. And to this day, I cannot stand how much they ruined her character by rushing through everything.

I think Cersei was such a different character that show Cersei isn’t even the same. Book Cersei is a petty idiot who is meant to be comparable to Aerys with very similar paranoia.

Stannis and Brienne are a double whammy. Stannis for killing his daughter (who he loved over everything else till that point) and Brienne for choosing revenge over honour.
@psevdhome
@psevdhome 7 месяцев назад
And in the book Brienne says once to Catelyn to allow her to avenge Renly and kill Stannis and then forgets about it. It's not a major character development for her. It's more that she doesn't think vengeance is necessary anymore in the later part of the story. If we ever get the book and Stannis and Brienne meet I doubt that she will think killing him is right. We kind of have the reverse situation already in the books. Loras wants to kill her because he believes that she killed Renly. So Jaime convinces him out of it. But the pertinent lesson for Brienne is that blind vengeance is not justice. ...and also Renly deserved to die for being a usurper and a traitor, there is no justice or law that allows Stannis to be executed for bringing justice to a traitor.

5:21 Its cause dumb and dumber where in love with Massi Williams, as why she was given the Full Fray slaughter, a ridiculous fight with Brianna, given the Littlefinger kill, given the NK kill and spotlighted in KL in 805 not mention some of the biggest plot armor ive ever seen. Same for Sansa but not that as big of a level.

That is where people missed understand Arya as a whole. D/D got arya wrong from the start. Arya’s POV shows that even though she is experiencing horrible things happening around and she is 100% out there without a single drop of protection she still has a human side to her. She still wants her family, she misses them, she questions if they would be happy to see her, if her mother or brother would take her after knowing she kill.she misses Jon and wonders if show would be able to recognized her still, she misses her direwolf Nymeria in which she wargs with and allows herself to be free and feel like a predator and not a prey. She has killed with perfect justification, and in Harrenhal she help to free her northern men. Arya arch is not about her becoming an assassin. Arya’s arch is about coming to terms with who she is and who she is meant to be. George has 3 plots working for her. Arya in bravos who is learning politics, finances, secrets, to act, to lie, magical abilities and dark sorcery. Arya is embracing that life as to learn skills that would be useful to her in the future. Learning languages, learning the trade on the streets, learning to warg and to used animals to see when her eyes were taken from her. Now she is going to be send to learn the art of seduction in the pillow houses. Arya liked the whores when she sold them as cat of the canals. They would share stories with her. Arya and Nymeria Arya can still warg into her direwolf with whom she parted two years and had an entire sea separating them. However, arya was able to see and hunt through nymeria. Feel nymeria’s powerful presence among her cousin wolves. Arya named Nymeria after queen Nymeria who came from across the narrow sea, married into the martell house so that he people would settle in this foreign lands. Nymeria was a warrior queen that carry weapons and kill men, commanded along her husband not behind her husband. She was know to sorcery. She wasn’t your typical Westerosi queen. Yet she was able to married and have her own children with a man that liked and accepted that wild part of her and tamed it but used it as an asset. Nymeria after escaping she settle in the riverlands where she took hundreds of cousin wolves, train them to be a men eating pack who are fear as they kill many Lannister, Frey and Bolton men. Nymeria came from north and settle in the riverlands and became a queen of wolves and a mighty hunter. Arya as Lady of winterfell Arya stepped out of her shoes. However someone else was put in her place to show the reader how much weight arya has politically speaking. This is seen by Jon, Stanis, Melisandre, Theon,Ramsey and Marce in ADWD Arya still holds the loyalty of the northen men for being the daughter of Ned’s Stark. Jon himself decided to forsaken his vows who he did not break for Ned, Ygritte, Sansa or Robb. But he couldn’t turn away from Arya. Keep in mind that the only people that know that Jeyne is Arya is little finger, Cersei, roose, Theon and possibly Ramsey. Everyone else believes that indeed arya is being held at winterfell and being married to Ramsey. Lady Dustin told Theon how the Lords will turn against the Boltons if Ramsey proof to not be a worthy husband to Ned’s brave little girl. Stanis promised Jon he will save Arya in exchange for support of the black watch which Jon agree. Melisandre knew Arya was the reason Jon was troubled and knew Jon wouldn’t trust or land her an ear if she didn’t tell him when Arya was coming to the wall. He forgive merce and send him and his spider wives to winterfell to smuggled Arya out and bring her to him in cattle black. Jon in such desperation after seeing Alysanne Karstark arriving at the wall fleeing her marriage to her uncle and ramsey’s letter . That Jon decided that fu.cked if Stanis has fail him and Merce was capture by Ramsey than he will have to ride south to rescue her himself. Which he did and haft the reason why he was stabbed (the other was allowing the wildings to cross the wall to take shelter) Jon’s vows are to not hold lands, tittles, take a wife or father children. He should have ignored Arya like he did with the rest of the starks in distress yet he couldn’t this time. Arya’s named moved the entire northen plot in the last book published. Eventually arya will have to out hiding. Stop being a faceless child and go back to who she is Arya lady of winterfell and with all learn in her journey she will lead her people like queen Nymeria and her direwolf. That is Arya’s arc in the book. “You will marry a KING and RULE his castle” Ned to Arya in GOT. This quote Ned told Arya which fallow by “that not me” Had a lot of meaning. Ned met Lyanna his wild, wolf blooded, horse riding sister who blossom into a maiden who capture the eyes of two very different men. Lyanna still managed to have a family of her own. Even in the most unconventional way for a lady of high birth. Arya is unconventional. She believes women can do more than be their husbands house decor and incubators for heirs. Women can carry swords, and ride off to battle with their men like the queens Arya admires lile Nymeria and Visenya who was also a sorceress Warrior queen. Yet she has a motherly side she show it with the smaller children that travel the king’s road with, she build her own little pack. ser harwin kneeling for her in harrehal, Nymeria fishing Catelyn’s body so that she was latter turn to lady stone heart. Ned can see that in his 9 years old daughter. Arya could marry a king. But this men won’t be like conventional Westerosi high born raised man. No this man will understand, love and accept this wild part of her. He will allow her to RULE his castle instead of being just his house decor. There are two heirs which Arya had build a connection with that being Jon Snow who is Rhaegar’s son. And Gendry who is Robbert’s son. Both in line to inherit the iron throne. Both sons to prince heir and a king. Arya was given the chance to build quite a relationship with this two bastards yet in her eyes they were never that. They were just Jon and Gendry. Two boys she could be herself with. That enjoy that wildness to her. Sailing west. Yes arya will sail west, west to Westeros to take her place in the game. To combine all 3 Arya’s into one. Arya (runaway, faceless aprentice) Arya wolf blood (her own northen magic inherit by her father’s blood and reunite with her wolf side, her direwolf Nymeria) And Arya lady of winterfell. Daughter to Ned Stark, the key to the northern support. D/D made Arya a mindless blood thirty assassin.

The ending would have been better imo if jon got the throne and dany decided westeros was too different to essos and returns to essos. Thus, a king who didn’t want it and a queen who gave up the crown she always wanted for the crown she already had
