david and dan are the only writers that can ruin one of the best written characters ever with one sentence of dialogue

The first and biggest murder in the story is that of Stannis. Having his daughter burned in his presence, when in the books she remained at Castle Black, remains the series' first major aberration. Stannis deserved much better than his treatment in season 5, just because of the showrunners' hatred for his character.

I personally see Jaime's situation as kinda the opposite: the fact that they managed to ruin his incredible arc in one episode is the most tragic thing.

They even managed to ruin Drogon. That's dedication.

As a Jaime fan, that one season 8 ep hurt. To see a character get assassinated in a single episode destroyed me. I also agree that Varys, Littlefinger, and Tyrion had the most painful downfalls. The fact that D&D turned the three smartest characters into being dumb as bricks honestly baffles me. Im praying George finishes those books so we get the real ending

I would add literally all of Dorne to this list. What they cut out from that part of the books could have filled two extra seasons of the show.

Having Dany do the mad queen thing is idiotic when Cersei’s entire book character is intended to be the mad queen persona.

Honorable mention to Stannis Baratheon. I've been reading the books and it's becoming one of my favorites characters, but l when I try to think about his show version I don't even remember his story details after going to Castle Black because of how boring and contrived it was

I really respect Varys' actor for being so passionate about the story and his character he's not just there for a pay check, he cares about Cinema and art being made, for some people its just Entertainment but for others its more than that, Writing, Literature, Series and Movies are an art form, it can be more than just entertainment, it can give life meaning and affect people with their meaning and message and change people, Season 1-4 was exactly that, a masterpiece

I swear the one who hurt the most was Jaime. The guy had one of the best redemption arcs in the history of televison (hell, I'll dare say it, and of CINEMA), and it was all thrown away. He should have died on the battle of Winterfell, alongside Theon, protecting Bran, bringing the redemption arc of both characters full circle to a satisfying conclusion

Honorable mentions: - Stannis Baratheon: no words needed - Barristan Selmy: just letting him die in the streets is a huge facepalm for me - Rickon Stark: the books say he is on Skagos at the moment, a really interesting place, and D&D just kill him off - the heir of Winterfell - Ellaria Sand: I`m not including the sandsnakes or Doran, because they were shit from the beginning in the show, but her introduction as Oberyns lover was spot-on for me, but as soon as she was back in Dorne she went down with the whole Dorne-plot - Kingslanding: I know a city is not a character, but back in the early seasons we saw how they reacted on how they were ruled and how things were handled under Joffrey. Kingslanding was a living city with living people. That hit it`s peak under the high sparrow. But as soon as Cersei blew up the sept, everyone was like: I don`t care about anything anymore.

It really baffles me what Dumb & Dumber did to Littlefinger & Varys. These two were literally my Top 2 favorite characters (especially Pety) ever since their throne room dialogue.

And YES, Littlefinger would never have given Sansa to the Boltons. He said to Ramsey that he didn't know much about him. That is impossible. He would have found out as much as he could. And never would have given Sansa away.

Remember that Tyrion said that Sansa's real strength of will was the ability to see what she really needed to do and make it not obvious that is what she is doing. Then Season 8 Sansa attributes her growth through the pain she has been in, which is fyi very toxic.

One underrated pick is Bronn. Ive never seen him there because he wasn’t particularly smart but he suddenly got one of the biggest plot armor and was made extremely dumb. Like he threatens the side with apparently 2 Dragons, 20000 unsullied, the whole fuxking north, the second sons, the whole dothraki,… and wants highgarden? Did he think he was gonna get away with it? He made „a deal“ with tyrion and jaime with no witnesses or anything and I certainly think that Tyrion or Jaime wouldnt have given highgarden to a friend who betrayed you and was one twitch away from putting a bolt into your heart…

It seemed many of the actors understood their characters much better than the writers. Varys would NEVER have given away his position on Dany. Never. Ever. Ever.

The fact that Stannis isn't on this list is absurd.

Tyrion convincing Dany to not fly straight to red keep and end the war is the most unforgivable writing decision in this show.

I think Jaime hurts more than the others BECAUSE it was his final two episodes. Even though it was still heartbreaking - I was getting more used to the others being ruined - like Tyrion, Arya etc. But at least I still had Jaime. He was my only hope. And they ruined him as well at the last minute 😥😥he should be higher on the list for that reason.

Honorable mentions: Stannis Baratheon (has been done dirty since season 2) Loras Tyrell (turned into a token gay after Renly's death) Barristan Selmy (his actor was even more disappointed than Varys' actor) Tysha (this omission really cemented Tyrion (and Jaime) to be "the good boys with little mistakes") Doran Martell, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, the Sand Snakes (I just can't with any of these. It's worse than Dany's heelface turn in S8 IMO) Casterly Rock (wtf is that exhausted gold mine plot) The Vale The Reach The Westerlands The Stormlands The North The Riverlands The Iron Islands The Crownlands Dorne (WHERE ARE THEY POST SEASON 4; dumbed down so much they couldn't care less that the Great Sept is nuked, the kingdom usurped by a Lannister, also D&D made The North forgot)

I like where you put Jamie here, but I think it's important to note that D&D tried to ruin Jamie since the beginning (even though it didn't work). For example In the book, Jamie didn't kill his cousin nor did he rape Cersi. This is actively D&D trying to ruin the character by giving him these actions in the early seasons.

I can 100% agree that all of these characters were assassinated like JFK. Dany was the one that broke me, I like cried for minutes after what they did to her character, then I was so angered of bran becoming king that I laughed for 3 minutes straight. Honestly props to DnD for ruining this show in the most random and unjust way and somehow making every error imaginable.

I would also argue that Jon is completely useless in season 8, like Arya. He became a bystander. During the long night he had nothing to do. His storyline as a Targaryen wasn't important at all - except for the fact that it was used as a plot device to drive Dany more "insane". But it had nothing to do with Jon. And this is why they decided he should kill Daenerys, so that he had something to do in the finale. It's so sad.

Littlefinger was too smart for the writers.

I'd say the very first character who was wasted by poor writing, was Barristan Selmy. He's one of the most legendary knights of Westeros who served the Mad King. He could have been a major player later on and especially for the mad queen plot. Instead, he was jumped by a bunch of thugs in an alleyway that served no purpose to his or anyone's character development, nor did it drive a plot. He was only killed so that David and Dan could meet their shock value quotas. It's a shame, considering how interesting of a character he was and the potential he could bring.

They literally had two better endings for Cersei with Arya and Jamie. They could either fully redeem Jamie by having him kill Cersei (which makes sense since he was all about protecting the people). And it would be heartbreaking for both of them. Or have Arya kill Cersei using Jamie's face (which she would finally use the faceless skills on the final season and kill another one of her list). Plus, imagine the scene of having Cersei feel super-extra betrayed seeing her brother stab her and before dying seeing Arya remove the face, feeling that not only she was killed by a Stark, but that her brother is also dead. I think that would be so much more impactful then a bunch of bricks and an incest love story... And Bran... Imagine having a character with literal super-powers and the guy just stares, stares some more, says one-liners, stares and uses his powers once or twice in some crows. And then stares some more. And I think you forgot one other character that was ruined: The Night King. He was a silent menace. A dude with super-powers that could create new walkers. A guy that has a massive army. Mysterious and magical. What do they do? Nothing. The guy is defeated in ONE NIGHT. And on top of that they never explained his motivation. More of his backstory. Nothing. Same with the strange patterns they left behind.

Ah! Bran, the king who spends the whole day catatonic and can’t have children. Indeed, a perfect choice to begin a new dynasty and rule the realm.

You didn’t mention the biggest way they ruined Tyrion - by changing the backstory of Tysha. That changed his motivation for killing his father and removed his drive to find Tysha. That makes him essentially a different character from the book.

Honestly, I think the Margaery ark is also ruined She just begun to spread actual influence with actual consequences just to die with everyone in Baelor's sept. I really hope we'll see a lot more in winds of winter from her, because the convenience of Hunger Games and Natalie Dormer was really sad to know about :(

Honorable mention to Sansa too. Went from a hated character for good reason (young naive girl who gets manipulated) to a loved one for good reason (she lives through her trauma and is smart enough to survive being with cersei) back to being a despisable character (smug and arrogant). The way she talks to Edmure in the last episode... pointless conflicts with arya jon and dany... im sorry this isnt who sansa was back in the early seasons.

LITTLEFINGER PETYR BAELISH was done the dirtiest HANDS down.

The worst thing about them ruining Cersei is that Lena is an amazing actress and they put her on a balcony with a a cup of wine.

Where the f is Stannis? He was ruined much more than Cersei or Arya.

Littlefinger is the character maybe the most responsible for the events of the entire story. He convinced Lysa to kill Jon Arryn, told Joffrey to have Bran murdered, helped arrange the murder of Joffrey, killed Lysa, took over the Vale and becomes lord paramount of the river lands (in the books) and yet doesn’t know wtf he’s doing.

There are so many awesome things they could have done with these characters with everything George set up, but somehow D&D managed to dodge all of them. As if they tried to be as incompetent as possible. Also, Stannis should be on this list.

I agree with all of these, but my biggest disappointments were the 3 Lannisters. I 100% agree with what you said on Tyrion. With Jamie, I was so mad when, instead of following the book version's path of separating himself from Cersei when she writes the letter saying she needs him, show-Jamie seems to re-dedicate himself to her, so we never get the fascinating inner conflict of him coming to terms with the fact that she's toxic. I subscribe to the theory that Jamie will end up being the valonquar and I thought the Jon-stabbing-Dany scene would play out between Jamie and Cersei instead. With Cersei, I couldn't believe how little the death of Tommen affected her. Her children were her life and that was such a huge part of her character, but her last and youngest child jumped out of a window because of her actions and she just took his throne and moved on. Terrible writing

It's been 4 years and I am still angry about what happened to GoT. I got burned so hard I am refusing to watch HoTD until the series has ended, no matter how good people are saying it is

Totally agree with this list just would add Arya because she went from wanting to avenge her family to not even sticking around to protect them. She wanted to be a knight she should’ve been Bran’s lady commander of his king’s guard. While brienne shouldve be Sansa’s. Her saying how much she admired Visenya Targaryen & was happy to meet Brienne but automatically hates Daenerys because of Sansa? & calling Sansa the smartest person she’s ever met 🤦🏾‍♀️

Where's Stannis? It's a shame that you don't seem to recognize the brilliance of the book character and how they've murdered his TV series counterpart.

I'd put Sansa instead of Euron, her character got butchered too, and Euron is an outsider since he was already bad at the beginning.

5:42 I will always stand by the fact that they literally could have had Arya wear Littlefinger's face after his execution and sneak into King's Landing as said individual, but for some reason this is never an idea. Same with Jaime upon entering Winterfell, though I would have preferred Arya doing the Littlefinger dress up.

I really miss the height of the Game of Thrones era. It really helped me meet new people and form newer friendships, seeing how we all had that one thing in common that we were passionate about. I read somewhere that the fight between Sansa and Arya was real until Sansa went to see Bran, and he revealed the truth, causing the girls to turn on Littlefinger. Also he was supposedly the one who lured the Night King into Winterfell by taunting him with his crows. The show doesn't show much of any of these things, though. In regards to him not caring about being lord of Winterfell could be because he already knew that he would be king.

One character you missed, Stannis Baratheon is one of my favorite characters in the books, but man in the show he SUCKS. Completely misses his whole character, and makes him break the one bond he cares about for literally no reason. I hate how show Stannis is written so much.

I'd also say Sansa. I liked where she ended up, but it didn't really feel earned. Like characters would say she's this calculated hardened leader, but she never really does anything to back up those statements, and when she does, it's off screen. I also just didn't that it was necessary for her to even be anywhere near Ramsay. She was already trapped in the lion's den at King's Landing. Why build her back up at the Vale if you're just going to break her back down again with Ramsay? I thought that was a weird plot, not to mention very out of character on Littlefinger's part.

Stannis needed to be on this list. Kind of for the same reason as Euron. He was ruined in adaptation. The story beats are there from the books. They are just mangled. They show him out right having sex with Melissandre and have him out right murder Renly, both of which aren't true for the books. Stannis explains that he was asleep when Renly died and should have been preparing to do battle. So he cannot have intended to kill Renly using magic if he was going to do battle. Clearly he was not aware of the exact methods Melissandre intended to use against Renly. The second strike against Stannis is when the writers make him go hat in hand to the Iron Bank to beg for money. In the book it was the reverse: he was seen as reliable and able to win by the bank, as they sent their agents to seek him out and give him money so he can become king and make good on the debts of the Iron Throne. They also remove how much Tywin and Randyll, some of the most competent and feared commanders and leaders, are afraid of Stannis or at least see him as very dangerous. "Stannis will fight to the bitter end and then some." They turn Stannis into a desperate madman, when book Stannis in the same desperation tells people not to burn people but pray harder. They make him sacrifice his heir, when in the books he tells Justin Massey to use the money from the Iron Bank to put Shireen on the throne if Stannis is killed. Then they produce handwavy writing to cause Stannis' army to be desperate and have him use no scouts and have him march into charging enemy cavalry and have Brienne bump into him on the battlefield and kill him. Just unfair. He deserved so much better.

Stannis Baratheon's character was utterly destroyed and got a terrible death. D&D ruined the show when they had him burn Shireen because of snow...

I unironically loved Euron. I laughed out loud plenty of times watching him. He also dressed like Hot Topic came to Westeros.

I maintain that cutting such pivotal characters/plots from the story are the biggest issues for these characters' storylines. Cause cutting out Young Griff is detrimental to Dany: the false dragon thing would cause so much conflict for her and actually explain why she would torch King's Landing. Cutting out the valonquar part of Cersei's prophecy ruined her ending and Jaime's (cause I'm certain Jaime is meant to kill her but they chose to have Jon kill Dany instead so they couldn't do it twice). And cutting Lady Stoneheart is what ruined Arya because so much of Arya's story is tied to the Riverlands and justice and revenge and how she's on a collision course with the husk of her mother and is going to give the gift of death to finally put Caitlyn's revenge quest to rest. Caitlyn slaughtering the Frey's makes way more sense than Arya doing it and turning into a weird psycho killer. And the gall that Dan and Dave had saying 'who has a better story than Bran the Broken?' when they were the ones to fully cut him out for an entire season is astonishing.

Loras Tyrell should be an honourable mention. In the books, he joins the king's guard after Renly's death, partly to protect his sister, partly to escape being married off for political reasons. He said about Renly: "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it." In the show, he just fu**ed the first pretty boy who smiled his way after Renly was dead. 🙄

Littlefingers death still pisses me off to this day. One of the most Interesting and smart characters in the series killed in one of the stupidest ways. You could tell Dumb & Dumber didn’t have a clue how to write him. Just complete incompetence.

I’m honestly surprised Stannis isn’t on this list he was a character that was ruined way before season 5 Book Stannis is a master strategist and tactician the iron bank actually went to him in the books show Stannis is literally portrayed as an idiot.

they shouldve sprinkled danys fall earlier on. Like, in addition to her "dreams coming true"; also show how that plays into her monomania/fixation on the 7 kingdoms. They easily could've made it work better cause when the reveal on Jon was made aware to her, I for one easily saw it not going well for her.

Its fair to say Dumb and Dumber ruined every character that was alive after they ran out of book material. Sad to say youre happy a character died before the end of a series because they would have been ruined later on

How is Stannis not on here?

Season 1-4 were so good I felt like I was watching history in the making. But after that I felt like I was watching my childhood hero developing a drug addiction. I’m glad I never finished the whole series, I could sense the problems occurring.

Show-Euron literally only had one/ two moments where he seemed *truly* frightening- when he first came onto Yara's ship, he brought the Jack Sparrow-meets-Freddie Krueger terror a person like Book-Euron was capable of- & a bit later, when he was fighting the Sand Snakes- he struck me as ruthless & scary. It gets undercut by every other scene that he has- but those were the moments that showed his potential. I suppose the only argument that _could_ be made with his 'Hot Topic guyliner swagger pirate'-act, is precisely that- that it's an act - but wouldn't that necessitate there being more connective tissue between the two? Letting the audience see just *how much* of an act that his public/ courtly behaviour is? It comes across as really weak characterisation, in the end- not a surprise that they failed so monumentally on deeper writing levels, given 'themes were for 8th Grade book reports'...

I think these ruinations all come down to two things: D&D wanting to hard subvert expectations without realizing how to properly do that and them not being smart enough to write for smart characters.

Peter Dinklage looks to be in physical pain everytime he's on screen during season 7 and 8.

See if Dany’s arc into darkness had been handled and executed as well as Jinx’s from Arcane, maybe I wouldn’t hate it so much. But because they rushed it so badly, it didn’t come from a genuine place and it never felt like it was earned in the way it should be. Jinx starting a war after embracing herself as the forever failure she’s never been able to escape? That’s powerful. Dany torching an entire city? A decision not built up to or earned by the writers in the way it should be. And to this day, I cannot stand how much they ruined her character by rushing through everything.

I think Cersei was such a different character that show Cersei isn’t even the same. Book Cersei is a petty idiot who is meant to be comparable to Aerys with very similar paranoia.

In Daenerys defense, she probably just "forgot" what her actual character traits used to be.

Stannis and Brienne are a double whammy. Stannis for killing his daughter (who he loved over everything else till that point) and Brienne for choosing revenge over honour.

Have Danny win King's Landing. Have Cersei "surrender". Have Euron shoot a dragon out the sky at that time, then boom, Danny goes mad and fucks shit up out of acute grief and anguish.

5:21 Its cause dumb and dumber where in love with Massi Williams, as why she was given the Full Fray slaughter, a ridiculous fight with Brianna, given the Littlefinger kill, given the NK kill and spotlighted in KL in 805 not mention some of the biggest plot armor ive ever seen. Same for Sansa but not that as big of a level.

I’m surprised the Night King didn’t make this list, however he would’ve needed to be added, not replacing any of the mentioned characters since you hit the nail on the head with this list.

I'll ignore the fact that the Mannis is sorely missing from this list and Tyrion is first just because he's a fan favourite. Please do a Top 10 Ruined Minor Charakters! My suggestions (no particular Order): Edmure Tully Quaithe Asha/Yara Greyjoy Ellaria Sand ...basically all Sand Snakes Doran Martell Renly Baratheon Brienne of Tarth (Not ruined, but seriously altered) Shae (Struggling for 10th:) the Reeds, Daario, Tormund, Coldhands, Jaqen/Kindly Man

Season 8 should have been about the Long night, season 9 the war against Cersei and season 10 about the Mad Queen

Ollena Tyrell and Margaery Tyrell are the only consistent good characters throughout the entire show, it's a shame how both of them died

That is where people missed understand Arya as a whole. D/D got arya wrong from the start. Arya’s POV shows that even though she is experiencing horrible things happening around and she is 100% out there without a single drop of protection she still has a human side to her. She still wants her family, she misses them, she questions if they would be happy to see her, if her mother or brother would take her after knowing she kill.she misses Jon and wonders if show would be able to recognized her still, she misses her direwolf Nymeria in which she wargs with and allows herself to be free and feel like a predator and not a prey. She has killed with perfect justification, and in Harrenhal she help to free her northern men. Arya arch is not about her becoming an assassin. Arya’s arch is about coming to terms with who she is and who she is meant to be. George has 3 plots working for her. Arya in bravos who is learning politics, finances, secrets, to act, to lie, magical abilities and dark sorcery. Arya is embracing that life as to learn skills that would be useful to her in the future. Learning languages, learning the trade on the streets, learning to warg and to used animals to see when her eyes were taken from her. Now she is going to be send to learn the art of seduction in the pillow houses. Arya liked the whores when she sold them as cat of the canals. They would share stories with her. Arya and Nymeria Arya can still warg into her direwolf with whom she parted two years and had an entire sea separating them. However, arya was able to see and hunt through nymeria. Feel nymeria’s powerful presence among her cousin wolves. Arya named Nymeria after queen Nymeria who came from across the narrow sea, married into the martell house so that he people would settle in this foreign lands. Nymeria was a warrior queen that carry weapons and kill men, commanded along her husband not behind her husband. She was know to sorcery. She wasn’t your typical Westerosi queen. Yet she was able to married and have her own children with a man that liked and accepted that wild part of her and tamed it but used it as an asset. Nymeria after escaping she settle in the riverlands where she took hundreds of cousin wolves, train them to be a men eating pack who are fear as they kill many Lannister, Frey and Bolton men. Nymeria came from north and settle in the riverlands and became a queen of wolves and a mighty hunter. Arya as Lady of winterfell Arya stepped out of her shoes. However someone else was put in her place to show the reader how much weight arya has politically speaking. This is seen by Jon, Stanis, Melisandre, Theon,Ramsey and Marce in ADWD Arya still holds the loyalty of the northen men for being the daughter of Ned’s Stark. Jon himself decided to forsaken his vows who he did not break for Ned, Ygritte, Sansa or Robb. But he couldn’t turn away from Arya. Keep in mind that the only people that know that Jeyne is Arya is little finger, Cersei, roose, Theon and possibly Ramsey. Everyone else believes that indeed arya is being held at winterfell and being married to Ramsey. Lady Dustin told Theon how the Lords will turn against the Boltons if Ramsey proof to not be a worthy husband to Ned’s brave little girl. Stanis promised Jon he will save Arya in exchange for support of the black watch which Jon agree. Melisandre knew Arya was the reason Jon was troubled and knew Jon wouldn’t trust or land her an ear if she didn’t tell him when Arya was coming to the wall. He forgive merce and send him and his spider wives to winterfell to smuggled Arya out and bring her to him in cattle black.
