Hi Rupert, the timing of this couldn’t be better for me. I am relatively new to photography, and self taught. I shoot almost anything almost anywhere as I learn about capturing light. Today I have been learning about the principles of design and it was fascinating to pause on each image and reflect on these principles on how each artist, followed or challenged these principles in each shot. I think this is what makes each image you chose so amazing and beautiful and I’m sure you could have chosen hundreds of others. Thanks for the great channel, look forward to the next one.

Rupert, a great little video and Top 10 list. Like any Top 5-10-20 lists of anything, it is always so tempting to open the list with a "How many of them match mine?' mentality. What was really great about this list was that none of your 10 matched mine! Firstly, your choice (and omission) of photographers made me delve a little deeper into some of their work, and that has already given me a lot to think about. Secondly - even with some of your 'obvious' choices of photographers (how could a list like this not include a H C-B, a Haas or a Leiter?) - your pick of their photographs was also left-field and not at all obvious or expected. That made me think and analyse a little where you were coming from. In that respect your choices have had an influence on me. You said: "We can all learn from a close study of them..". We can also learn from other people's choices and preferences. So many thanks for that.

Superb video as always - always look forward to the next one. You've chosen an excellent selection of top street photographers but there are so many that not all could make the top 10, I suppose - would have liked to see Garry Winogrand in there somewhere :). Obviously these are your selections but I think some of the other Ernst Haas images are more impactful - he is totally outstanding, as is Trent Parke and Saul Leiter. Also interesting is what you didn't say about some of the selected images. In the Meyerwitz street scene you focussed on the lion (which looks like it's got out!) but didn't mention the tall redhead looking in disbelief at what seems to be someone walking a tiny pony in a coat - for some reason my eyes always go there :) - or, in the Leiter image, the way the black curtain cut out has been carefully positioned to frame the tree in the background. Anyway, love your videos and your images and have bought your Fine Art Street Photography book (which I recommend to others). If only I was brave enough to immerse myself in streetlife brandishing a camera, maybe I could capture some decent images - ho-hum, one day.......

Great selection, nice one. Funny how your Alex Webb choice is one with his infamous use of the silhouette, something that is now copied to death by street togs everywhere, and has now been labelled 'the curse of Alex Webb'! Trent Parke is incredible, his execution of the film medium is dream like. IMHO Meyerowitz is overrated and a big part of his success is of course his mentoring by Robert Frank, the one hit wonder of "Americans'. But what do I know? Subbed.

A technical point worth noting is most of these photographs are not as sharp as modern photographs, and some like HCBs, are quite unsharp. Yet none would have been made better by being sharper. There is an intimacy in 10" to 15" prints that has been lost in the poster size images galleries typically display at.

Thank you for posting but I am sorry but other that Ernst Haas - William Klein - Cartier -Bresson the other pictures leave me cold. To me and of course we are all different, I just look at these other images and think "Emperors new clothes". Sorry I know that is not what convention wants me to say but after over 40 years of street social documentary photography - earning a living from it, I absolutely know that If I had submitted some of these images to my editor, they would have gone straight in the bin and I would have been looking for another job. Just because a photographer is a "name" doesn't mean that their work is automatically top rank. Having said that thank you for taking the trouble to post this video and stimulating discussion. Hi Rupert, are you familiar at all with Japanese ukiyo-e prints? I collect ukiyo-e prints (especially shin hanga) and I became familiar with street photography primarily due to the similarities in composition and content (particularly with Hasui and the Yoshida family). It would be very interesting to see a comparative exploration of the two styles.

This century is quite young. Anyone with a reputation was born last century. Trent Parke is quite young, but still he uses film. Watch "The Black Rose." Heide Smith - not a street photographer - was born before WW II in Germany, most of her work has been in Canberra from the early 1970s. She's retured to Tuross Head now, there's an exhibition of her early work coming up in Hameln Germany soon. Think glass plates, a Malik camera.

Question. Do any Black Male or Female street photographers catch your eye? Just asking for I know that not many black male street photographers or photographers of any nature barely exist and black female photographers and street photographers are almost none existent. I hope that can change for black females for I love street photography and hope I can stand out in it one day as an influence like the photographer Deana Lawson who inspired me. You’re 100% correct. Snapshots, that are later then analyzed as art. Most shots are crap but every once in a while you’ll find a nugget that just happened to have a viable composition to allow the photo to then be considered as keepable/usable

Old English speaking people should know better than to define “best” as something larger than the teeny tiny bubble they live within. The world is so freaking large and so talented, that once the west-centric and white-centric view is dismantled, the true picture (pun intended) will start to emerge.

Unfortunately, your headline is misleading clickbait: Top 10 greatest street pictures of all time. Your list is something else: One photo from each of your 10 favorite photographers. Your taste is clearly reflected in your choices. I like most of the photographers here, but I would have chosen better photos by some, e.g., Gruyaert, Leiter, Haas, Webb, and Meyerowitz. A true list of the top 10 greatest street pictures of all time would all be by Henri Cartier-Bresson. But that list wouldn't serve any purpose.

What do I think? The pole is a great mistake. I like tilt as an artistic choice. Here, it looks like a mistake. Were it mine, I would crop it or bin it. Trent Parke is good. Not very old either. 3:13 has inspired me to make photos similar to this. He did it on film, I do it in post. His pole at 3:15 matches up nicely with the shadows. 3:27 looks like Australia to me. I'd like to see you reproduce that one. 8:26 I have a handful like this. Not necessary entirely negative space, with speckles of something. Perhaps this should have been "Ten of my favourites, The First." Leaves room for more, perhaps some suggested by the comments here. I mostly prefer contrasty black and white, like Sean Tucker. Trent is good, if you haven't yet, watch "The Black Rose."
@kqatsi
@kqatsi 11 месяцев назад
Some tilt is inevitable with wide-angle lenses. The Einzig image looks like a 28mm shot. In order to straighten it without cutting off some of the figures, she would have needed to crouch a bit, which would mean the hunched man would block the hugging couple.
@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 11 месяцев назад
@@kqatsi I regularly shoot with no tilt, there is no law says you must have tilt. If you tilt your camera, do it enough so it's clearly an artistic choice, and not just because you couldn't get the shot with everything straight. If I can't get the shot, I walk away. If you can't get the shot without some tilt, be prepared to clean it up later.
@kqatsi
@kqatsi 10 месяцев назад
@@oneeyedphotographer You get everything straight on a 28mm? That's not how optics work. Sure, you can the "horizon" straight, but vertical lines will be distorted. In any event, other people clearly have more tolerance for tilted perspective-if the photographer had walked away, she wouldn't have gotten this shot, and she wouldn't be on this list. You do you, but don't pretend like your way is superior.
@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 10 месяцев назад
@@kqatsi Depends on your camera craft. I shoot building etc straight so I don't have to "fix" them later. I didn't say my way is superior, I described my preference. I don't like my photos to look like mistakes or that I did something that's not a considered decision. There's no law says I must admire your photos or you mine.
@kqatsi

@@oneeyedphotographer Of course. But you wrote: "If you can't get the shot without some tilt, be prepared to clean it up later." That sounds more like a directive than a preference to me, but maybe you meant it differently.
