It’s amazing to see how much this channel has grown. James is truly an amazing person. I sat in New Foundland for a month watching videos of the Kamado Joe and James is the reason I decided to buy one. When I got back home to Texas, it was delivered the next day. I wrote to James several times to ask questions and share my experiences. The KJ is by far the most superior BBQ tool I’ve ever used. I will be getting your book and wish you the best James. Keep up the great work. PS…I want the new Kamado Konnected Joe!!!!!!! Trying to justify the purchase to my wife. I’m almost there!!! Lol. 👍🏼👍🏼
New to the channel thank you for all your insights and sharing what you've learned. These have been helpful. Some of these gift ideas I wouldn't have thought about, but makes perfect sense. Again thank you and keep them coming!
I bought the pepper cannon in a weak moment and have received a bit of grief about the choice but would do it again. I love it. Thanks for the discount code.
James, there's broken link on your website. On the Ribs 101 page, you offered a link to your pulled pork youtube video instead of the video for ribs. Love your videos. Thanks.
Love the channel. Newbie to kamado grilling and just got a steal of a deal on a Joe Jr. was wondering if you have a video that list all your modifications and "must have" accessories for this particular kamado. Really love your channel and learning a lot. Will be purchasing a few of your items on your website. Let the fun begin!
@@SmokingDadBBQ thanks. I noticed you cook with a slow roller on some of your cooks. Would you recommend or does using the soapstone and deflector shield together kind of do the same thing? I'm guessing an extender rack would be a good addition as well as the sear plate.
I thought spending $200 on a pepper grinder was insane. But there is something about Smoking Dad BBQ that seems to always succeed with separating my money from my wallet. I have to admit it is a fantastic grinder. I haven't used it in full cannon mode, but even for daily use it is so much better. More consistent grind, less turning, and it just feels good in the hand. While I'm giving a thumbs up, a HUGE thumbs up to the Kick Ash can. It works really for one-step ash removal. What I'm really eager to try (I just got mine) is inserting wood splits to keep real wood smoke going through my BJ during long cooks. (Nitpick for James: rewatch this and see how many times you say "something like" when you really mean the item itself, not something like it. So as not to offend, I'll head on over to your new website and subscribe to your newsletter)
I could not bring myself to spend $200 on a pepper grinder either. A great alternative are electric pepper grinders which are plentiful on Amazon & an order of magnitude cheaper (even with an accompanying electric salt grinder, too). My wife made fun of me for buying them, but now she loves them! 🤣
Great video, James! Just spent a ton with Dalstrong's sale. I will put a shout out to HEXMILL pepper grinder. Same aluminum construction and speed of loading/milling. Same superfine and coarse as cannon but only 10 levels in between instead of 20 (seems overkill). MOST IMPORTANTLY, nearly half the cost AND they now have a SALT VERSION with ceramic internals to resist corrosion! Get both for the cost of one pepper cannon!!!🎉❤
It hits super fine for sauces and soups and super coarse for big chunks of meat. Everything in between satisfies individual tastes and for $110 vs $200...Plus, watch mannkitchen come out with a salt version (maybe even drop a fewbucks).
@@richardpowell8065 The Salt Cannon has been out since 2022. The hexmill finest setting is in the same range as traditional mills, while the pepper cannon can grind sub 60 mesh. On the coarse side it's closer, but the pepper cannon wins there too. The hexmill certainly outperforms ordinary mills and is a good choice for those that want to upgrade without upgrading all the way to the pepper cannon.
I have a question about the Meater 2 or any of the other Meaters probes except the block. If you buy more than one probe. Will they work at the same time with each other? Example: can I use 2 meater 2 probes at the same time?
Think the vent guide is accurate at altitude (Denver metro ~5280ft)? I often struggle to apply various tip/tricks related to bbq and suspect it's a factor, but it also just may be my lack of skill.
I took my Akorn out west this summer to Banff, Whistler and Yellowstone and didn’t have to make any adjustments. If the book doesn’t help email me for a refund but it should be a solid baseline for minor adjustments
Can you talk more about the kick ash can for the Big Joe? I’ve been thinking about switching to that since i get a lot of ash caught under the standard wings at the bottom and feel like this might be a better way. What size did you go with it? Do you still recommend it?
$200 for a burr grinder? Why not a Hario burr coffee grinder for a fraction of the cost? I have one that I intended to use for coffee when I traveled, but now I grind spices with it instead. I'm a home coffee roaster, so I'm a bit picky when it comes to coffee.
@mannkitchen Really? They can grind fine enough for espresso, and coarse enough for french press. Not sure how coarse you're looking for. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zyCHdG25JFU.htmlsi=N1DOCfnrcvJ2WQju
Why does the audio sound like it's a recording from a voicemail or a phone's microphone? Clearly there's a wireless mic used, but some settings are misconfigured somewhere. Maybe a filter added to remove background noise in post, I dk but it sounds like a video conference call to my ears...🤷♂
Please, be an ambassador for those who own a kamado joe jr and ask Kamado Joe to make more accessories for the Jr. The griddle plate and jotisserie would be awesome
00:15:24 Fatwood - 20 sec of torch flame, nestle it under your pile of fuel. How much fatwood can you buy with $179? IDK man I think you're a bit out of touch with the commoner. LOL, and as I'm typing, you're couching, trying to justify a $200 pepper mill! Bro.
I said it either makes no sense or complete sense on how you use it. For me not buying $25-$29 pre made rubs is a money saving tool. If you have a normal mill, an electric mill or even a coffee grinder you can make everything I am making. In the grill gun race video I showed using my wife’s hair dryer and a fire starter cube is just as fast as the $200 priced item
Hi James, I’m considering the ‘Meater’ wireless products for my husband for Christmas, but I’m not sure which to get. He LOVES his BIG JOE 3! If price was not an issue, and it isn’t for this…which of the Meater products would you choose? Specifically, would you recommend the Meater 2 Plus, or the Meater Block> Thank you for any suggestions.
I’m looking for a new grill cover because my Weber brand one failed quickly. The Velcro strap fell apart. The soft side just crumbled from the sun or something. Is there another good grill cover out there?
Based on your recommendations I am already the proud owner of a smokeware pan, a grillblazer, thermapen, IR thermometer, Meater block and a Big Joe, I agree with all of these recommendations… just hope the KickAsh pan comes off ‘waiting list’ soon. Thank you SDBBQ for all your sense and advice over years - thank you for sharing.
Thanks! Some great suggestions. I already had many of them on my Christmas list or already purchased based on your RU-vid channel. But I got a couple new ideas, including the vent guide e-book. Thanks for your on-going content. So helpful for me as I embark on my Kamado Joe journey
Hey James. I got a Pepper Cannon per your recommendation. Do you know how to tell what "mesh" you're getting out of it? Like if I'm trying for 16 mesh, how can I tell how many clicks that is? Thanks!!
Thanks James, that helps. I didn’t see the recipe on your site. Interestingly, they say it has 75 settings, your video says 48, and mine actually has 90 clicks. Not sure what’s what, lol.
@@andrewgladstone2794 www.smokingdadbbq.com/blog-posts/make-your-own-rub is the recipe. I’d go from their site. And I just counted from the finest spot
00:07:01 $15-20 at Harbor Freight, $54 if you actually need to read extreme high heat which most do not. Totally adequate in terms of accuracy, will last a lifetime with such sporadic use.
Excellent lineup, James!! I especially appreciate the deep-ish dive on the dalstrong knives, (specifically the bread knife for cutting brisket) which I am about to pull the trigger on. You and Al have made me a better Que'r! Thanks!
Good stuff. About how long does one of those Coleman propane cylinders last you? As of late, I feel like my grill gun is going through a cylinder every 1-3 weeks, which seems ramped up from last year.
I honestly never go full force for the kamado. Just use the red dial to maybe halfway is plenty to get stuff going in a minute, fewer sparks, and longer lasting canister.
@@richardpowell8065 I’ve started doing that it was eating through them so fast, but it still seems pretty ridiculous. I swear the first year I had it I could go full force and the canisters lasted way longer.
