The reason why piracy does not see any play is because mana burn is no longer a thing, so your opponents can just tap their lands in response. There is also a more powerful version of the effect called drain power, released in Alpha. The mana is forcibly drained from their pools meaning even if they tap in response you get the mana
i totally did! i was taught magic with the intro decks to lorwyn. i remember those sets, especially lorwyn/morningtide. i was born/raised in a small, very conservative midwest town and before i moved to cali, my grandmother warned me about mtg (think satanic panic kind of thing/unholy strength controversy era) (and also ac/dc. back in black is a great album). when my friend decided to teach me the game the artwork so helped break that barrier. while i dont do much with magic as much (other than watch your, saffron olives, and the profs videos) i am quite stoked to go back there.
OBJECTION! I was one of those people who named the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor blocks, because Shadowmoor is actually the main time when I quit Magic seemingly for real. But, there are two problems here. * It's Eventide, not "evening" tide. I know, it's weird, but that's how it is. * Shadowmoor and Eventide are their own block separate from Lorwyn block, even though they are largely tied together.
I gotta say, Dev, Stronghold is one of my favorite sets of all time! Mox Diamond, Sliver Queen, Grave Pact, Hermit Druid, as well as shadow creatures and some of the best walls ever printed. There are TONS of hidden gems here, probably due to them being overshadowed by those aforementioned all-stars.
Piracy could be kimda cool in commander where you can politic your way into letting some people let you use their mana, but now that mana burn isnt a thing, everyone will just tap thier lands in response. Super unique card text though.
My favorite obscure card from a set everyone forgot about is Fade Away from Exodus. Everyone remembers Exodus for Mind Over Matter, but Fade Away is a damn good budget wrath in blue.
I play SO MANY of these in edh. I use the lairs in the decks that run those colors. Shaman of the Great Hunt is a favorite of mine in my Animar deck, which is built for cedh. Used to run Supplant Form, Sigil Tracer, and Galvanoth until I took Mizzix apart. I'm too young to remember Scourge, but I've played Call to the Grave in each Zombie tribal deck I've put together, also the reprints are not white bordered. I play Mortuary in Ghen. Also Piracy doesn't work without the mana burn rule.
The Lairs are interesting cause they have that card type *Lair* , which opens the door for potential “lair synergies and pay-offs” to be printed in the future. Kinda like how gates and shrines started getting more cards the last few years. Might never happen but still.
Too bad Piracy became super bad after mana burn was abolished. In theory, your opponents can just tap down and instantly remove any opportunity to yoink unowned mana. At least you could politic with allies for use of theirs.
Call of the Grave is the singular card that cemented zombies as my favorite tribe. Undead Warchief has to be my favorite creature and I wish both would come to Arena so I can throw it in the same deck as Necroduality.
A man after my own heart. But I can never get Call to the Grave to work. I _always_ want some non-zombie creatures, whether it's Grave Titan or Ghoulcaller Gisa.
@@dreamwalking Sacrifices have to be made for the greater undead good. Besides, there's a fair number of reanimators that specifically return creatures as black zombies in addition to other types like Amonkhet Lili.
I started playing right after Invasion rotated but my friend who taught me hadn't updated his lists in a while so I got to see his decks in action. Really cool set and kinda the precursor to Ravnica.
Dark Suspicions is a favorite of mine, I'm fairly new to magic and I love when people recommend me cards from way back for my commander decks. Basically it slots into my mono-black sheoldred the apocalypse deck where I force everyone to draw a ton of cards, even if sheoldred gets hated off the board (and she usually does) that plus underworld dreams and some other effects usually help me out. It's a fun little card.
I started playing magic when fate reforged was released. A draft of it was my first magic experience ever. And the first rare i ever opened was the demon archfiend of depravity. And just soon after I started watching your channel, but I didnt know that it was infact brand new :). So anyway, i love the spotlight that the set is getting here. I played suppleant form in my Brudiclad deck to great succes. I have never really found a Home for the shaman but i bought back in the day thinking that it would be super busted. And it might still be in the right build. I just dont play a lot of temur and maybe thats why. Anyway, great video! I will look for the other series after this one.
Archfiend of Depravity is to this day my favorite card along side a foil Liliana the last hope that my wifi pulled for me in a 2headed Giant tournament that she did with me. Archfiend has been sitting in my Kaalia deck for many years but just the other day I took it out and put in my Sauron deck. Awesome card with a special history to me.
I'm actually surprised Sigil Tracer didn't see a reprint in the wizard tribal commander precon, since its inclusion is a no-brainer and I don't remember buying the card.
Dev: Thanks for Choo- choo- choosing me as you favorite MTG content creator - LOL When I was making my Ur-Dragon deck and discovered the Lair lands= Flavor win 10/10 - Supplant Form vs Elminsters Simulacrum - I'd love another set that was 100% creatures like Legions. That set is underrated for adding a bunch of Tribal staples - Invasion Plans has done work for me in my Xenagos deck, make big creatures with Trample and smash. Invasion Plans vs Bedlam. - Piracy vs Mana Short vs Exhaustion When it comes to cards I am very surprised aren't banned in EDH is Cadaverous Bloom; that card has been sitting in my binder forever but WOW, recently discovered how broken it is,it sure does work in my Aristocratic Yargltani. I think it is funny compared to some of the cards that are banned in EDH, a card that allows you to exile a card from your hand for 2 Green or 2 Black mana... how could this go wrong? :P
15 minutes would definitely be too long to hold the video hostage, but a full 30-50 seconds would be just long enough of an awkward silence to be funny.
So fun finding gems. I do have a good temur edh deck built around That Bearclaw guy. It's a fun ramp, flash, big dumb creatures deck so the shaman fits perfectly.
Piracy ...... !!!!!😳😳😳 I've always been a fan of the Lairs lands, I can't understand why people root for the triomes and ignore those. They come into play untaped ! UNTAPED ! Thanks for the tips !
Dev you are going to be one spicy Commander player I love it. Keep documenting your ideas before you fall into the staples trap! Great video, so glad people didn't watch it much I get cheap cards. You can't lose!
we.. piracy basicly only says "ur cards cant be countered" becasue in response to you casting that, everyone on teh table will either use their mana to cast instants, or just tap their mana ... so you cant tap anything with piracy ... it was a dmg dealer with manaburn but now ... people just tap before this resolves... what am i not getting here ???
Yeah, I came to say this. Without manaburn there is nothing stopping me from just tapping down all my land when that is cast to prevent it from being used.
On scryfall, don't right click on the card image. It'll save as a jpg and you'll get those white corners on all the images. Instead, click "download png image" lower on the page. Then, the card images will have transparent corners. You're already putting so much time into editing, and this one little change would make your videos look so much better.
I just finally got a binder for my lands, and those triomes are expensive. I almost have a full playset of all of them, and ten copies of others. Too bad I don't have a playset of the new capenna's versions....
Waiting for couch card, the cat gave it away. Knew it was gonna be one if those cards wotc prints even though there's no chance it's ever played lol....
Paused video at you might forget about stronghold. I for one did not. Second favorite set! SLIVER QUEEN! and spikes. Volraths stronghold!?! There's a lot of power in that set
Piracy would be stronger with mana burn as a rule still. Now, players can just tap their lands in response, and you won't get anything. Back in the day, they would have to worry about taking damge for not using the mana they would make if they tap their lands while this is on the stack.
MaRo has stated for a long time that the game would be better off if instead of instants we simply had sorceries and simply used flash to make those sorceries into "instants." Would save a LOT of words on a lot of cards.
Wouldn't Sigil Tracer be fun with Harmonic Prodigy and Seething Song. 5 mana in ten mana out. I need to watch one of those new shaman videos. Find out what the heck they are doing with that thing.
Piracy is useless. Your opponents can just tap out in response. It can clear the way from instant speed interaction but it doesn't even do that against mana dorks or rocks. You would have to use politics and even then it's meh. (Edited for spelling)
Legion sucked it was all creatures scourge was one of my fav 3rd sets, piracy is kinda shit now that mana burn doesn't exist there is no penalty for in response they tap all their lands and you wasted a turn if it was your bomb
