Adnan A hmm. I honestly think the general public’s idea of just how rich a doctor....any doctor Is perfectly accurate. In the thumbnail it’s a split screen between a “well off doctor” and a filthy rich doctor. I can almost guarantee u that despite the income varying wildly by specialty even a well off doctor is richer than the vast majority of the us population. A V duh. Who in their right mind would undergo almost half a million dollars in debt for an average salary and payoff? Their income is their greatest weapon and it’s pays off in the long run. Of course they’ll be behind their peers in the beginning but obviously approx mid- late 30s their income shoots up and being a doctor actually pays off. Handsomely. Even if u account for the couple years it’ll take them to pay off that debt. They’ll be behind at first but will in the long run become part of the top 5% income earners in the US.

@-whackd
@-whackd 5 лет назад
@@nater88dawg Hope those people are doing something they really really enjoy! Because 60 work hours plus the related time getting ready for work means a lot of time! It doesn't surprise me when a lot of older overworked doctors are fat and disgusting potatoes with tonnes of wrinkles and eye bags once I hear their schedules. They are always amazed that I keep up with and often know as much or more about whats new in their specialty since they don't have the time to keep up with research when they have those schedules and a family. When you are hitting over 60 hours a week, I really think its valuable to hire a part time assistant. Maybe that might just be for cooking or cleaning, but you can also hire an online research assistant to keep you up to date. Personally, I wouldn't have kids if I did 70 hour workweeks. Why produce children to farm them out to a babysitter? The point of having a family is to spend time with them. Kids need love more than they need an iPhone X or a brand new car for the 17th birthday. Let them get a used one.

@LordPrometheous
@LordPrometheous 5 лет назад
It's enough to be comfortable if you're single, maybe a wife and 1 child, and not living in a ridiculous place like NY or CA. You definitely won't be vacationing in the Hamptons or Martha's Vineyard, though. No gambling trips in Monaco, no breakfast on the French Riviera. Hell, I made $80K last year and it really didn't feel any different than earning $55K - $65K, because I'm just putting more into retirement. So while my coworkers drive newer cars and have nicer clothes, I drive an 18 yr old car and usually keep shoes for 10+ years, clothes twice as long. I still have t-shirts from the 80s and 90s. If you ever get your income to $70K, just resist the temptation to spend more. You should save more, because you can't work forever, and you'll want to have fun when you're retired and can do whatever you want all day, every day.
@luiza2021

SuperN0va Well, you can die before retirement and all of that sacrifice will be in vain. Besides, wenn you are old you no longer want trips or fancy cars. You will just wish health.
@LordPrometheous
@LordPrometheous 5 лет назад
@@luiza2021 you make a great point, however even if I die tomorrow, I have a wife and children to think of, and one child is still school age. So my savings would not be in vane. Also, the things I want to do won't change when I'm retirement age. I'm 44 and still want to fly model rockets, play video games, enjoy astronomy, read books, and I will always be a "car guy". But of course I will want to be healthy. If I didn't save and lived like there was no tomorrow, I'd be guaranteed to be in terrible financial shape if I live to retirement. Risk vs reward says I should save, so that is what I do.

Hear me out, we lower the cost of healthcare per capita by reducing physician salaries, including the specialist, but in turn allocate federal money so that every physician who makes it through medical school, residency, and dedicated x amount of years to being a practicing physician will never have to pay a cent of that debt back. That way physicians will become medical professionals for the right reasons, not the money. And they can’t complain about the ridiculous debt anymore. America is approaching a physician shortage, I think it would work. Not saying we pay them scraps, but nothing above 250k. Obviously if you own your own practice it’s different and more like a business, making the sky the limit.

Isn’t average and median the same thing. Lol.
@leilanidru7506
@leilanidru7506 5 лет назад
Bubbas Ernie no. Average is the mean. And median is the middle. Mean is sum divided by the number of people or units or whatever. And median is literally just the middle of the data and the line in which 50% of the data falls below and 50% fall above. For example, if you put 12 people in a room (let’s call it the red room) and calculated their average income. Let’s say 10 of them are McDonald’s workers, 1 is bill gates and the other is warren buffet. Add their net worth and divide by 12 and the average or mean will come to billions of dollars but the two outlier billionaires in the room skewed the data and misrepresented the true income of the group. So say I wanna become a red room member and see that the average income is 55 billion dollars, this is misrepresentative because the vast majority of people in the red room don’t make that much. But if you were to draw a line down the middle it would give you a way more accurate representation of what ur most likely to make if u join the red room. Because the median isn’t affected by outliers. You just arrange the numbers from lowest to highest and the middle income is the median. Which means half make higher than that and half make lower than that. ( this middle income will likely be a McDonalds worker and not a billionaire because they are on the far end of the data set) I hope this long winded example made sense.......
@leilanidru7506
@leilanidru7506 5 лет назад
Bubbas Ernie therefore, median is a far better representation of averages (for the most part) than the actual calculated average/mean. Because the mean is heavily affected by outliers.

I was a medical recruiter for a few years, and one of the few things that's really bizzare is how many doctors live paycheck to paycheck. The old saying is true for most people their expenditures rise to the level of their salary. Like a doctor in primary care is expected by his peers and say very proud family etc. To live like a multi millionaire on a 200k income. That, and banks are predatory towards doctors a doctor with no credit is almost always going to get a loan because they have such a high guarantee of future income. I mean it’s astoundingly common for a doctor making 20k a month to have less than a thousand in savings.

My son is a intervention radiologist. It was four years undergrad while playing on the football team. Very difficult maintained a 3.82 gpa. Than four years medical school. Three years residency and that was about 50,000 a year. He worked 80 hours per week for that. His total cost of for education was about 360,000. Eleven years before he was fully fledged and done with residency. The cost of the education was not truly the total cost. He still had to have a car and gas money etc, while attending school. As one other person mentioned to me he spent almost as much time in college, medical school and residency as most people would going to elementary, middle school and high school. It’s crazy. I don’t know how he did it. In the end it was worth it because he loves his work and helping others. The financial portion… It’s more than what was listed at the top of the chart in this example. There was a time during his residency, as a father, I felt horrible. All he did was work, work and work. I remember a few times Face timing him And he was dozing off as we spoke after getting home. It definitely was a huge… Commitment

Neurosurgery resident here. I didn't plan on NSGY going into medical school but I ended up here because I found my passion. It'd be asinine to choose one of these specialities based on salary, its simply too much work to justify the pay in comparison to other residencies. If you're a high schooler or even an underclassman in college- don't worry about this stuff. Just go study to put yourself in a position where you can make the choices you want to.

I had full academic scholarships for both university and medical school. I was in the top 20 in my class and could’ve selected multiple high paying specialties but I selected pediatrics because that’s what I enjoyed most. I had a wonderful 20 year career in primary care general pediatrics, but when I left pediatrics to join FDA, my starting salary was more than I ever made practicing pediatrics in a metro area on the East Coast. And now I get to help thousands or more patients with my work rather than one patient at a time.

My parents always tell me that I should study well and become a doctor because they don't want me to become a normal office worker (like them) because they say it's too toxic and I agree with that coz sometimes my mother gets gets home crying because of her boss, my father gets home really tired because of overwork yet having little pay (about $280 a month). They perceive doctors as rich and 'no bosses' to follow, and that was what I thought before too. I told them that what if I don't want to become a doctor, and they said that sometimes it is about practicality. I don't blame my parents tho. All the doctors around us in our little city have huge houses, lots of cars, etc.

Doctor salary has increased in recent years, but only numerically. When adjusted for inflation, doctors in the 80s and 90s were making about 33% more than their counterparts today, with much, much less student loan debt. There was also less hassle seeking billing from insurance companies, and fear of being sued for malpractice. People used to trust their doctors, but now they've become viewed as money-grubbing con artists. Patients file frivolous malpractice lawsuits because they believe their doctors are loaded, and want a piece of it. But even the highest payed doctors aren't uber-rich. Six figures (and even seven) is a very good income, but it's nowhere near the amount that professional football, basketball, and baseball players make. Most doctors couldn't afford a Ferrari, and the ones who could work so much they wouldn't be able to enjoy it. Doctors who live like professional athletes spend their paycheck as fast as they can get it, and don't have any savings

I live in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on Balkans. In most of Ex-Yugoslavian countries doctors earn between 10-15000€ per year, which is about 16-17000$ per year. For most other countries this is a very bad salary but it's actually one of the most profitable jobs on Balkans, still. Our medical system is focused on solidarity, tolerance, altruism, which means that 95% of all procedures are completely free for everyone. Also, our doctors often get compensations from patients as an act of gratefulness, so the average year salary I sad can be a little bit higher considering these compensations. These are some differences between Southeastern Europe and Western and American medical systems that I wanted to share 🙂🙂
