I love Singin’ in the Rain, but The sound of music deserves a spot here. Anywhere here.

Lotsa good choices here. I was particularly happy that you included "Cover Girl." At the time it was made, MGM hadn't yet figured out how to use Gene Kelly. The studio lent him to Columbia. Other than two Rita Hayworth/ Fred Astaie musicals, Columbia didn't have near the musical reputation of MGM. Yet, when Kelly met with Harry Cohn, he convinced Cohn to knock out a wall between two sound stages to create a super sound stage. The result was the joyful "Make Way for Tomorrow" number with Gene, Rita and Phil Silvers. Kelly, of course, also did his inaginative solo Alter Ego dance and went back to Metro a real star. Great choice.

Best Movie Musicals EVER made in Hollywood HISTORY: Top Hat, West Side Story, Cabaret, Meet Me in St. Louis, Fiddler on the Roof, The Wizard of Oz, The King and I, Singing in the Rain, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Hollywood will never be able to make any musicals that would top these classics.

This is my exact list. If you were going from worst to best (of these movies here.) Or best to worse (again, these movies.) I would change it.

Musicals like that will never be seen again nor will those amazingly talented people. All we get now are pretenders and lip singers. The seasoned talent is on broadway but it’s not in style.

Just my opinion (although leaving out 'SOM' was major crime), but best musical ever was 'Flying Down to Rio' in 1933, and not just for Fred and Ginger in very brief segment, but for extended Carioca scene, airplane number, and everything else too.

Would it have hurt to have the audio of the scenes you show? They're all on RU-vid.

The Golden age of Hollywood Musicals ran from about 1940-1960 Anything made after 1960 does not belong on this particular list. Some film historians argue that the Golden Age started after the release of "The Wizard of Oz" (1939)

Some good choices here but can't agree with your Number 1 though. I always thought it was overrated.

Seriously? Name a weak aspect of Singin' in the Rain? It's the greatest musical of all time.

Devilz DandruFF So many people claim that but it's a matter of opinion. For a start, the songs are mostly not original but hits of the period they are harking back to. The storyline is somewhat confusing, with that whole 'modern section' of the supposed period musical film they are making. I can't imagine how this could possibly integrate with the Duelling Cavalier clips that they show, so the only reason for including this would be the chance to add lots of unrelated dancing sequences (as wonderful as Cyd Charisse is here). Furthermore, the studio boss character is absurdly weak, considering his position, whereas Don Lockwood (aided by the irritating Cosmo Brown) seems to have the right to make important decisions about studio productions in his absence (e.g. "You know it may be crazy but we're going to do it. The Duelling Cavalier is now a musical.", after which Don, Cosmo and Kathy do the 'Good Morning' routine.) I'm not slamming it completely (I have a copy of the movie and have seen the show in London's West End) and there are certainly sections I enjoy, such as Kathy's first dance and the Lena Lamont character, but I just think there are many better musicals out there.

What musical would you consider to be the greatest of all time, according to your criteria? ..and please don't say West Side Story. As for SITR, I had no issue following the story, enjoying the songs and execution of the dancing sequences. The execution of all the numbers was first rate and, I do not care one iota whether the songs were written exclusively for the musical or not. From the ones that I've seen, the only musicals that come close to SITR are the Wizard of Oz & the Band Wagon.

+Devilz DandruFF No, I won't say WSS but this is a list of what would be in my 'top ten' (no particular order): Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, Grease, Oliver!, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Mary Poppins, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma! and High Society. Were I not restricted by the 'Hollywood' definition, I would probably have included Les Miserables and the wonderful Umbrellas of Cherbourg. As for the 'top spot', it has to go to the corny but charming Sound of Music, if for no other reason than the joy it has brought to so many since its first inception.
@devilzdandruff9199

So you would exclude the Music Man from your list?

Again. What about Mary Poppins, Les Miserables, Phantom Of The Opera,Chicago, Moulin Rouge and so many others. Granted these are mostly adaptations of Broadway musicals. Some succeeded and some failed.

The dancing was top rate indeed, but the singing left much to be desired! The Sondheim/Bernstein score is also top notch, but the cast could not do it justice with their singing. Of course, Natalie Wood didn't sing at all but had to be "dubbed" by Marni Nixon.

Sorry, but hopw can you put Jailhouse Rock in your top 10. What about the best musical ever written for the screen "Seven Brides For even Brothers" and the following others. Sound Of Music, West Side Story, Pajama Game, The Wizard of Oz, There's No Business Like Show Business and manyothers like the Busby Berklee movies. Sit down and rethink your picks again.

I think some of the 30s Busby Burkley musicals were fantastic. Cole Porter usually wrote with Merman in mind. While she really wasn't a dancer, nobody could touch that voice. What about the Judy Garland Mickey Rooney movies which were choreographed by Busby Burkley. I could go on but won't.

All those movies were great musicals, but the only one on your list that belongs there is Singing in the Rain. There were many other musicals far better than the ones your listed, but then again, it's a matter of preference.

Ms Wynne Walsh, you are leaving out 3 decades of film musicals : the 30's / 40's & the 60's, even the 70's [ " Fiddler ON The Roof " ]------------So, I respectfully & strongly disagree ! ----------HOW can you not have : " West Side Story " / " " Swing Time" / " The Wizard Of Oz " / " Kiss Me Kate " / " Anchors Aweigh " / " Silk Stockings " / " The Bandwagon " / " You Were Never Lovlier " / " You'll Never Get Rich " / " Top Hat " / " Follow The Fleet " / Broadway Melody Of 1940 " / " Take Me Out To The Ballgame " / " An American In Paris " / " Gigi " / --------Et Al ! ---------------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o

Well, it´s your choice, and they are all fine films, no doubt - but some of them are more of movies with music than musicals. How could anyone omit West Side Story? Sound Of Music? Band Wagon - or any Astaire-Rogers movies?
@SteveLittleLivesHere

+Rebecca wynne walsh I think your choices are excellent. Not a bad movie among them. This is just my opinion, but some people making comments are confusing what the Hollywood Musical is. As good as Sound of Music is etc. they are not really Hollywood Musicals they came after the Hollywood studio structure wound down. And many of them were not even made in Hollywood. Fine musicals they are but not really Hollywood.

She does say in her description that these are what she thinks are the ten best... Any and all 'Top 10 or 20 or 100 etc.' lists on You Tube can only be someone's opinion. They post their list and people then agree or disagree. All's fair....

Me again, what about South Paciic, Porgy & Bess, My Fair Lady, even the poor production of Hello Dolly, the Five Pennies and White Christmas with Danny Kaye. There isn't one Elvis musical except maybe Blue Hawaii that should even be in the top 75.

It's a nice video but where is "The Sound Of Music" (Regarded by many as the greatest movie musical of all time), Yankee Doodle Dandy, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, The King and I, The Wizard of Oz the list goes on and on, "Singing in the Rain" is the only one that is right on. But great video, none the less.

I appreciate your lovingly presented video but most of your choice are way off. Only Singin' in the Rain and The Wizard of Oz are definite top choices. Meet Me In St. Louis and On the Town are close. I love Judy and Fred and Easter Parade is good but not great. But the rest aren't even close. Jail House Rock, come on it's an Elvis vehicle not really a musical. What about West Side Story, An American In Paris, The Bandwagon, these are classic Hollywood Musicals?
