Next in our countdown is an aircraft we’ve been flying for more than sixty years! At number three, it’s the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules.
The introduction of the C-130A Hercules in 1958 was a transport and logistics game-changer, with its rear cargo door allowing pallets to load and unload whatever needed to be transported rapidly.
A truly versatile aircraft, the current C-130J is continuing to deliver what we need, where we need, when we need it across the globe.

My all time favourite RAAF Aircraft grew up near Richmond hearing them in the morning on the tarmac watching them fly low over my house. I would hear a Herc coming & run outside. From my grandmothers house I could watch them drop paratroopers & cargo out the back. Very fond memories. Backbone of the RAAF. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃

We lived on Richmond Air Base in 1968. Dad was the CO of 36 Squadron and was always flying off to Vietnam. Years later when Cyclone Tracy happened, it was he who sent the Hercs up to Darwin.

The faithful Herc. Always there in times of crisis, whether helping the civilian population or our regional partners when required. There is no better sight when your hot, exhausted and hungry than the C130 engines turning and burning sitting on the strip ready to bring you home safely. To all the crews throughout the years thank you. You have do oz proud.

True. The Hercules has been in continuous service and non-stop production since 1955. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sahel, Central Africa, Timor, Somalia, Sinai, Haiti, Operation Damayan, Operation Tomodachi, MH370... So many people owe their lives to the good old but sturdy Herc.

I remember the morning we filmed those segs, out of Richmond, in the Grose Valley. 01 was "right on the duck's arse" as the loadie put it. The tourists on the lookouts could not believe what came around the corner in front of them!

#1 will be the CAC Boomerang. It was literally made by Aussies, one of the few aircraft that isn't imported or developed by foreign companies.
@MartintheTinman
@MartintheTinman 3 года назад
No, I'm betting F-35. We've already had the Wedgetail and it's new. The Boomerang is probably unknown by anyone currently in the RAAF

#1 will be the F-111 no doubt.

@@Afroninjaxandy . That would make sense but the most iconic aircraft in the World is the DC-3/C-47 Fifty four years service in the RAAF and nearly a hundred years flying in some parts of the World
@BJSK08
@BJSK08 3 года назад
@@MartintheTinman No, I actually think the Spitfire, it is so iconic in lots of countries, let alone being iconic anyways. It was one of the most mass produced aircraft in the world during the 2nd world war.

It almost had its origins with the North American Aviation Company in the US who developed the NA-16 trainer aircraft, from which Australia under licence developed and built the CAC Wirraway trainer. A proposal was made to incorporate as many major airframe parts from the Wirraway into the Boomerangs design as possible, but this was abandoned in the end.

These planes are amazing. They’re like elephants of the sky, and they look cute like elephants, too. I had no idea they were referred to as “Hercs”, and that they could take off from and land on, different surfaces. Such a versatile aircraft. I’m glad they’re still being made, and in use.

With over 60 years service, the Herc deserves its place in the top 3. It was never much fun if you ended up with a seat in wheel well and had to sit with your legs alternated with the guy opposite you.

But not the same aircraft. A, E, H and J over that time but the C-47 served fifty four years. The first one was the last one, 1945 to 1999

The C-130 is equivalent to a GMC 2500HD crew cab with a Duramax diesel. If you take care of it, it will take care on any task you throw at it. God bless our Australian allies.

Super Short Landings. Big pay loads. Not many aircraft tick that box. Short airstrips are everywhere in our part of the planet. Replacements must have proven improvements before any retirement. Hercules, Caribou, are the stalwarts. Their replacements must be better!

Last year they were flying over the northern suburbs of Perth for a couple of weeks, called Pearce and was told that what they were doing was secret testing of capabilities, I will add it's the capabilities of an aircraft they have had for more than 60 years, with a flight path over one of the most densely populated areas of WA. I kept telling the idiot I didn't care what they were doing, just when are they going to stop flying low over my house. The idiot then assured me they weren't doing anything bad, are all RAAF personell thick as two bricks or do they just save that job for a person that is?

I've flown in a Hercules. Out of Edinburgh. Down along the coastal suburbs of Adelaide. We were allowed to walk out on the loading ramp while tethered. The pilot also gave us a weightless experience and I landed on my bum on the rollers. Still was a heap of fun though
