A more emotional and bittersweet win then this one right here. Just seems like a poetic tragedy the way it unfolds but knowing that Wheldons win creates a legacy for many others to follow. He’s healed so many people in so many different ways❤️

This would be my number 1, as it cemented Dan Wheldon's rightful place as an all time great at the speedway. Although I am hugely biased as he was my favourite driver 😅

I can’t believe this was my first race when I was 10 years old with my pops and his friends. Sitting in turn 4.. I can still see JR crashing and Wheldon passing him. Gives me chills thinking about it. I’ve been to every race since. Long Live Dan Wheldon!

Oddly enough, this is almost a mirror image of what happened in 2006. In that race, Marco Andretti, a rookie, who was leading on lap 200 entering turn 4, encountered a slower car and backed off the throttle slightly, allowing Sam Hornish Jr. to pass him in the last few yards before the finish line. In this case J. R. Hildebrand did NOT back off, attempting instead to pass the slower car on the outside, resulting in wall contact. In retrospect, I would much have preferred that Dan Wheldon not win this event. If he had not been the defending 500 Champion, he might not have been offered the opportunity to compete in Las Vegas that year, where he sadly lost his life.

Dan Wheldon certainly belonged in the top ten and this was an amazing finish. certainly bittersweet and reminds me that racing gives and takes. The Last 4 are going to have to be great to beat this. Mears-Johncock is definitely #1 so 4,3 and 2 are left very interesting to see what they choose. I am thinking I guess we gotta do castroneves/tracy 2003, then 1987 andretti--Unser or. Gotta cover all the 4 time winners and Mario, Last one maybe at #4 maybe Rossi in the 100th running in 2016.

oddly enough, when Viso crashed on lap 27, it ended a rather odd streak for the Venezuelan. In each of his first three Indy 500s, he ended up dropping out of the race after having completed 139 laps. Three years in a row.
