I feel the same with makeup I have so much worthless but expensive 😭 makeup lies lies lies. Those lights they use and camera tricks had me thinking layering on tons of makeup would look good but ruined my skin. Now I wear no makeup and my skincare had lots of products but thanks to real dermatologists I found a routine that is finally working and listening to real knowledge about skincare from Dr.Dray has me buying affordable and products that work my skin is beautiful again I'm so happy 🤗🤩💌.
The best investment I have made was to have all my windows replaced with UV filtered windows. This is my forever home, so the money invested was worth it to me. It saves furniture, paint, art, floors, and yes skin.
As an asian, we really care about skin brightening. A lot of my skincare products contain the ingredients mentioned. These are what i've used. All of these are Korean products except The Ordinary. It's not i don't use western skincare at all, but when it comes to brightening product, it seems that asian skincare have more potent brightening ingredient 😅 I have tons of products that i have tried but i list down products that have the mentioned ingredients located at top 5 in their ingredient list. ... Vitamin C: Tia'm C Source Serum (Contain 20% L-ascorbic acid), Some By Mi Yuja Niacin Serum (Contain 82.3% Yuja fruit) Hydroquinone: Cos De Baha 2% Hydroquinone Brightening Serum. Kojic Acid: Cos De Baha 2% Hydroquinone Brightening Serum. Azelaic Acid: Cos De Baha 10% Azelaic Acid Serum. Vitamin A: The Ordinary Retinol. Salicylic Acid: Cosrx Blackhead Power Liquid (4% Natural BHA consists of willow bark water as the 1st ingredient and Betaine Salicylate as the 3rd), Cos De Baha Salacylic Acid BHA 4% Serum Licorice Root: Acwell Licorice pH Balancing Cleansing Toner (This have 10% Licorice root extract as 2nd ingredient after water). Niacinamide: Tia'm 10% Niacinamide+2% Arbutin, The Ordinary 10% Niacinamide+1% Zinc. Sunscreen: Purito Centella Green Level Unscented ... The most powerful brightening product goes to Cos De Baha Hydroquinone Brightening Serum. This serum alone contains a lot of actives mainly for brightening which is 2% Hydroquinone, 4% Azelaic Acid, 4% Niacinamide, Kojic Acid, Salacylic Acid, Lactic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid. I used this for spot treatment and it works wonder😭 ... Sorry, most of them are unfamiliar to you, but i suggest you to try them since they are very cheap yet effective!!! If you don't know what to choose among the list, I suggest you to try Tia'm C Source Serum, Cos De Baha Hydroquinone Brightening Serum and Cos De Baha Azelaic Acid Serum. The Tia'm C Source Serum is for people who are familiar with vitamin C as it's too potent. Otherwise, i suggest you to try their niacinamide one as it did brightened my friend's face significantly while he has sensitive skin. Hope it helps whoever read this 😁
Dr. Ray I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for producing so much quality content on this specific topic!! It's my main cosmetic problem and this info is much appreciated!
Dr Dray hello why you never discuss taking medicine to calm & balance hormones most melasma occurs due to imbalance hormones please discuss tablets to take for melasma putting things on top layer of skin doesn’t help much. Thats why melasma always comes back. You have to control the hormones otherwise buying skincare products is just waste of money
I've been following you for YEARS lovely doctor! You have made my 68 year old sun damaged skin as good as it's ever been! I use less make up and more skin care thanks to you. Bless you. Keep up the good work.
@@x80WildCat08x I'm using Hada Labo hylauranic goop, Secret Key Rose Edition galactamite watery essence stuff, rice toner moisturizer in the summer and Cera Ve night moisturizer in the winter, and the Cera Ve Retinol resurfacing a couple 3 times a week. Still got my wrinkles and spots but the quality of my skin is glowing and supple. I really don't think there is much you can do about the natural effects of age.....I just live with them and use a light to medium coverage foundation when I feel like it NOT full because I'd rather have real looking skin than a mask.....right? Hope this helps WildCat :-)
Here is the ingredient list for hyperpigmentation: •Vitimin C •Hydroquione •Kojic acid •Soy •Azelaic acid •Vitamin A •Retinol •BHA:Salicylic acid •Licorice root •Niacinamide •Sunscreen
Thanks to Dr Dray I switched from expensive skin care creams, La Prairie, to Cerave and other pharmacy brands and my skin still looks amazing. Needless to say I’m saving a ton of money.❤️
Anaita Naskar - Same! I inadvertently scratched the skin on my chest - teeny, painless scratch - a few weeks ago. I noticed today that it had healed into a mini keloid (???) and scar. Sigh.
@@yayyadi25 I do. This season they are my morning routines. Dr. Dray, Dr. Rattan and Hot and Flashy. I've learned that not all of these rec. are what work for me. i.e. daytime actives no no
@J.Marlene what brand are you using? Maybe the percentage isn't very high. I use the brand Timeless, the Vitamin C. Goto a youtuber video by Hot and Flashy. She has a promo code for a discount on the Timeless website. Make sure you get it from the website directly because you can trust that it is fresh. Vitamin C products can be go bad.
When you started with vitamin C I was side eyeing you while cooking 😂 always so informative! Been with you 1.5 years and I’ve never had such good skin. Also, you knocked Sephora and Ulta out of my budget and I’ve never felt so comfortable in my skin. You’ve freed up so much space mentally ❤️
Shelby Crow Cera Ve SA renewing cleanser, moisturizing cream (or SA cream when season changes and my upper back tries to break out a little it’s the best), The Ordinary glycolic acid 7% toning solution and last is Cera Ve skin renewing night cream or Klairs midnight blue calming cream (I alternate but the latter is a lot less thick). I have pretty oily skin (Arizona) but these days my skin so happy 🤗 Also use The Ordinary Marine Hyaluronics but that’s not like a staple
Since my early twenties I have never walked out of the house without an SPF of at least 30. It pays off..I am almost 40 and people mistake me me for 30 sometimes. I have no wrinkles and dont buy any expensive products but starting to use Retinol now only. Sunscreen is crucial
Dr. Dray you're my hero 😭 I come from a family history of skin cancer and your channel was the final push I needed to go out and just make a dang appointment with a personal dermatologist already. I just wanted to tell you that I brought you up to her and she really appreciates you for the information you're providing people regarding skincare and such. It's funny, she too spends her time mostly just trying to burn into my brain the message of "WAY less fragrance - MUCH more sunscreen" 😅 A *literal* lifesaver, I'd say
Im guessing you have used it so im very curious, what exact product did you use and how long did it take to see results? I have hyperpigmentation around my mouth and some sun damage freckles under my eyes and even my lips :(
@@batrisyia9856 I've been using it for a few weeks now and no purging for me. Not everybody experiences it. And with the improvement I've seen it, it's worth trying.
yuno kun I think if you slowly incorporate it into your routine, starting off maybe once week or once every 2-3 days, it maybe could reduce the chance of purging
I love and salute this woman for taking such initiative to educate people around the world about cosmetics.. to be honest she is a dermatologist and popular one she doesn’t even have to do social media stuff for earnings.. but hats off to her for uploading daily videos and recommending products all around the world .. not only US products .. so that we can use better products and save our money.
So true!! I had never heard of it until last year from Dr Dray and I know a lot about skincare! I wonder why it's not more widely known?! My derm didnt even mention it when I was pregnant struggling with breakouts!
I'm lucky enough to live in Australia and have access to 20% over the counter azalaic acid, it has been a game changer for my skin and my children's skin.
Great vlog. In my mid 20s a friend told me about sun damage caused by light coming thru windows. Asked me to compare driver’s side of my nose (left here in the US), to the other. Was astonished by the difference between the two sides and have been wearing sunscreen ever since. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
800K subscribers! Proud mom, here. Dr. Dray was my first youtuber experience and she helped dramatically change my skin after I started watching her videos in Jan 2019 and decided to give tretinion another try... Now I'm a serious skinthusiast; preaching tret and sunscreen to everyone who will listen... thanks, Dr. Dray!
I agree. Dr Dray is the reason I actually look at RU-vid most days now and have been watching for a long time. Sooo proud too because this content is pure gold
I can't help but start to think that Canada enjoys our hyper pigmentation struggles. Thank you for explaining these star ingredients! I'll be keeping an eye out with them in mind!
I totally relate! ...I just bit the bullet and went to my dermatologist for a tretinoin prescription. That and alpha-arbutin seem to help the most. I have severe hyperpigmentation issues due to acne scarring.
@@amarie5040 We definitely have limited options but I have found the Ombrelle sunscreens which include Mexoryl to be the most effective. However, to be honest, I prefer the sunscreen's I get off of yesstyle.
Monica Newton those sunscreens sting my face! I can only use zinc sunscreens. I have tried quite a few, from the drugstore, and from YesStyle and Korean brands but the only one i really like that has spf 50 is heliocare 360. Most mineral sunscreens unfortunately dry me out and so far this is the only one that doesnt. La roche posay has a mineral colour correcter for people with rosacea and fair skin with spf 30 that i plan on trying as the days get shorter.
My generation didn't have the benefit of dermatologist's on YT, or all the research and knowledge. There was no SPF. We worshiped the sun and were told that was healthy. Oh to go back in time and have a do-over!! Love and appreciate Dr. Dray.
Nicole Jordan, i don’t have acne but I do have a lot of white bumps and enlarged pores. I purchased differin but I’m so afraid to start because of the purging :( ! Would say that it’s manageable, especially when working six days a week ? Thanks 🙏🏻
It's the sunscreen for me! I knew I wasn't crazy when I started wearing sunscreen and noticed my hyper pigmentation was lightening when I'd take it off. I always heard about the protection and prevention of hyper pigmentation that sunscreen offered, but I was so glad to hear it's ingredients actually help lighten dark spots. It's a no brainer for me now!
As one of your “more mature”/old viewers, the Sana product interests me, especially if it improves thinning skin. It will again be available on Amazon, on Aug 10th. Thanks for great info..Glad to see you mentioning products for mature skin w/o acne issues!
You have taught me so much about how to take care of my skin without plunking down a huge chunk of change at Sephora. It's such a ripoff! I feel like an idiot for spending thousands of dollars over the past 30+ years on luxury skin care when you can find products just as good at the drug store for half the price. I've shared the knowledge I've gained from you with friends who have seen noticeable improvement in their skin as well. Thanks Dr. Dray!
How did you know I was about to look this up? I follow the Hyperpigmentation Clinic, and was about to look up products, and here you Are! Thanks, Dr Dray
Sun damage in the form of age spots is my number one concern. This video is very helpful. I recently added tretinoin to my skincare, a stronger niacinamide serum and switched from a 30 spf mineral to a 50 spf chemical and am seeing improvement in my overall skin appearance.
@@BarbieBuiltBullies I've been observing my hyperpigmentation fading a little recently. My neck was really bad, it started lightening a few days after I started using thick moisturiser on it. For my face, I can't point out an ingredient, but my routine now includes retinoid, antioxidant serum, double cleansing, and sunscreen and making sure my skin is better hydrated. Also, making sure I don't irritate or increase sensitivity as much as possible, very important. also, generally observing my skin's current condition, using or not using products depending on current needs. Also very important. Hope this helps, but pls don't just follow this, seek what YOUR skin needs.
My opinion is that Dr. Dray is absolutely brilliant, I go to a highly recommended dermatologist and she has never explained anything to me with the exceptional knowledge that Dr. Dray has.
Yay for sunscreen!! It’s crazy to think that in my teens I hit the tanning bed when I won’t go more than 2 hours now without reapplying sunscreen! I’m a total testament that just sunscreen can fix hyperpigmentation..it’s been my savior!
I have had incredible results with Vitamin C, but I do sometimes have oxidation issues. I've tried Drunk Elephant, Tarte (my current fave), Glow Recipe, Timeless, REN, Mad Hippie and Sunday Riley. Timeless has one that is effective, cosmetically elegant, has air tight packaging, doesn't oxidize and is less than $20.00 in the US. Dr. Brenner has one also under $20.00, that is almost identical to the $135.00 Skinceuticals C Ferulic. I use my AHA right before I apply my Vitamin C, as that seems to help it absorb better.
Good Tuesday Morning All! Dr. Dray, I recently was told that my skin looked so nice and lighter and was asked what I was using and to my own surprise, the only difference was that I had just started using sunscreen! This last part of your video explains it all, sunscreen can lighten up my skin! Thank you so much!
If skin takes roughly 30-40days to completely turnover and assuming that hyperpigmentation is only skin deep - why is it then that hyperpigmentation takes so long (months to years) to fade? Shouldn’t it ‘theoretically’ only take a few months to fade? That’s clearly not the case though of course.. It takes so long even when diligent about sun protection, routine use of vitamin C, and ingredients that promote skin cell turnover..
A great and inexpensive alternative to the vitamin C serum she mentioned is from “Seoul Ceuticals,” their Day Glow Serum. It also contains vitamin E and ferulic acid. I’ve been using it for almost a year and it’s my favorite vitamin C serum (plus it’s from Korea and they just do skincare right).
Thank you for this in depth suggestion video! As a sufferer of hyperpigmentation I love that you explain the active ingredients benefits and risks. Could you make a hypopigmentation video please? I'm sure I'm not the only one who could benefit from that. Drop some knowledge 😊
I have had great success with The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA and it is very affordable. I spot treat a stubborn dark spot on my cheek which I have had for years!! It took about 2 months of consistent use (and sunscreen) and now it has faded to the point that I don't need a concealer. Skin turnover takes a while so you have to keep at it.
I live in Japan and Sana actually have a new line for britening with Arbutin as the first ingredient (they call it whitening here of coure for marketing...)
I wish you were consistent in your views of vitamin C L ascorbic acid, you’ve made numerous videos panning vitamin c as a beneficial ingredient and then you include it on your list, if anything the skinceutical vitamin c serum is the one that is sold in oxidized form with a yellowish tinge as they make it in big batches and just let it sit.
Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster is ascorbic acid, vit E, and ferulic acid (plus other benefitial ingredients) and it costs half the price of the Skinceuticals one.
Skinceutical’s ce ferulic has completely transformed my skin! It’s expensive, but the splurge is worth it. Everyone around me noticed how different my face looks!
I tried the Skinceuticals product and began to see pigment fading within the first week; albeit, trace. In addition, my facial skin "bumps" resolved after the first application. I am sold on this serum!
I’ve tried many low and high end spot treatments, and none worked. I finally tried Musely (similar to the online prescription retinol/retinoid companies). I started with their Spot cream that had 12% (yes, 12!) hydroquinone, kojic acid, and niacinamide, After seeing a slow improvement after a month, I decided to try the stronger formula because I typically can tolerate retinols. This one has 12% hydroquinone, 0.05% tretinoin. Three months in and my spots are almost all gone. I do experience some irritation around the eyes, so I will take a break after August. It will be 4 months of using the hydroquinone, and likely a good time to take a break.
This is a late comment. Tried Ambi Cream. Returned as it has a very strong artificial fruit odor similar to that used in hard candy. It didn't fade away quickly and had to wash off. Will be trying some of the other products reviewed here. Thank you Dr Dray for the helpful and hard to find straight info on skin care products!
Didn’t mind the scent. She mentioned on a video that they no longer have Hydroquinone but the one I got off amazon still has it written. I’m on my second week of it, so far my new scars look slightly lighter but the old ones haven’t changed much 😩
I reliable vitamin C is from a Korean brand called KLAIRS Freshly Juiced Vitamin C Drop. Its 23 dollars. Works amazingly well and has thousands of reviews.
I've been using the Timeless dupe for the Skinceuticals C & E Ferulic serum ($20 bucks) for post acne and it's working very well. Lots of people in the skincare community buy it exclusively instead of Skinceuticals. I'd give it a try instead, you'll save over $100. I had really bad cystic acne, lots of dark spots from it. My skins looking amazing now. Theirs is in a pump now instead of a dropper, I keep it in the fridge and it's still nice and clear. They also offer a 3 month guarantee so if it oxidizes they will replace it free of charge.
Lovely, brilliant doctor I adore you. I’m 77 and I’m blessed with a really good skin. Some of it is genes and some of it is skin care obsession. I’m of the generation that worship the sun. We slathered ourselves with baby oil and baked inside a makeshift aluminum oven on the beach. I have the sunspots to prove it. But rather than lament, I choose to use them to show younger people. What will happen if they don’t take care. Here in San Antonio tanned skin is coveted. Tanning beds abound. When I can, I show young people what will happen if they continue this practice. I’ve also had two pre-cancerous spots removed. But I am blessed in that I have long believed that the best make up is beautiful skin. At 77 I can still go out in public with no make up. I don’t do this by choice often but it is something I can do. I also tell young people the two most important things in skin care aren’t you never go to bed with a dirty face like with makeup on it and to not wear sunscreen. Always always clean your face before bed and always always wear sunscreen. As far as what products to use and what the routine should be skin care it can be as easy as cleansing, sunscreen, moisturizer at night. The important thing is consistency. If you do nothing else, I always clean your face at night and always wear sunscreen. Always.
You may have better luck watching Dr Vanita Rattan's channel. She is a UK-based Dermatologist, and specialises in the treatment of hyperpigmentation in skin of colour.
@@Greentree805 & @Amanda M Thanks for mentioning this one! Want to try it but wondering if in your experience with this you notice a scent? It says it doesn't have a scent but want to be sure because of a fragrance allergy.
@@Hasna256 I haven't noticed a scent, and I love that once I rub in well, it doesn't leave me looking shiny, and it doesn't show up whitish on my skin.
Been using Differin on my chest shoulders and back for a few months now. I believe using this in combo with Vani Cream Z bar in the shower. My skin has never looked better in those areas. Especially my back!
Yes. After my moisturizer has dried completely. For example I wash my face and moisturize a few hours before going to bed. Then I apply the azelaic acid right before bed.
@@michiebutterfly7785 I have seen it on Amazon. I'm curious if it works as well. Right now I'm using an anhydrous 12% ascorbic acid mixed with TO resveratrol/ferulic and getting awesome results.
CeraVe has been a game changer and simplified my routine. I use the hydrating body wash for face and body and the moisturizing body lotion for face and body, but thinking of switching to the cream.
Galato I cannot. I use very little protection on my arms and legs due to my neurologist suggesting not using sunscreen to increase vitamin D for MS. So I don’t expect mine to fade.
@@galato4234 With my hands. LOL..just teasing. I put it on during my daytime routine, after I cleanse and tone. Some people use it at night. It really depends on your skin and what regimen you're using for skincare, but it can used day or night depending on that. :)
You are my favorite! I spent a lot of years dealing with dermatologists that were no help whatsoever. Totally wish you had been my doctor! Thank you for you vids 💓
Hey Dr. Dray! I saw a claim on Beautypedia today saying that nitrogen propellants in aerosolized skin care products (such as Caudalie’s grape water) are damaging to the skin. I’d love to see you do a video discussing this!
I have hyperpigmentation on my cheeks, I believe mainly from sun exposure over the years. I’ve tried many of these such as: Vitimin C •Azelaic acid •Vitamin A •Retinol •BHA:Salicylic acid •Niacinamide •Sunscreen And haven’t really noticed much of a difference at all in terms of pigmentation (though the texture of my skin has definitely improved). Where should I turn to next?
Love this topic in your videos. Im Olive skin and always scared of hydroquinone. Can you please make a video about steroids in skin care? Specially for WOC? I'm Hispanic and steroids and hydroquinone are not advised in WOC skin care groups. I wonder what are your thoughts about them. Thank you for all you do!
This video will be a heavy hitter! I don’t know what’s more impressive the knowledge in your field or your work ethic, discipline and consistency Dermatologist/Marine🤔. Not sure if what I have is classified as hyperpigmentation but I do know I’ve been a hyper pig while eating on more than one occasion.🐷 Great Tuesday topic! 👍🏻🎥⭐️
