Great list! Casablanca is my favorite film of all time, and it really helped spark in me my interest in watching and reviewing old movies, and I can say that Ingrid Bergman's performance is one of the reasons why I love it. If you haven't seen already, I recommend Indiscreet with her and Cary Grant, and Joan of Arc. She gives great performances in both that I think are good examples of how much range she has

Thanks for watching and commenting Harrison! Love hearing your experience with Casablanca and how personal it is for you! I already want to rewatch it! I have seen Indiscreet, I wanna say it was just outside my top 10! I even included a brief clip of Ingrid dancing in it at the beginning lol. Haven't seen Joan of Arc but know about it.

I've always loved Ingrid Bergman, she was so beautiful and gracefully enchanting, and she was a wonderful actress too.

I love Ingrid SO MUCH that I've seen every movie she starred in except her two early Swedish movies I couldn't find anywhere. What's more, she is the reason why I started watching movies. Here's my top ten list: 10. Fear (1954) 9. Stromboli (1950) 8. The Human Voice (1966) 7. The Visit (1964) 6. Goodbye Again (1961) 5. Europe '51 (1952) 4. Journey to Italy (1954) 3. Notorious (1946) 2. Autumn Sonata (1978) 1. Casablanca (1942)

As Rossellini, Bergman, Godard kind of girl who doesn't always need much plot to be engaged in a movie, I should also mention that they may not be to everyone's liking, especially since they are not about bunch of things going on throughout the runtime, but the almost surreal atmosphere they build and the emotional impact they have on me after a watch is so great and devastating... I guess I enjoy being in that state🙃. Hope you have a great time exploring more of her work😁

Casablanca is my favorite also! I also love Notorious, Spellbound, Cactus Flower. I thought she was outstanding in Gaslight but it’s not a movie I want to go back to again and again because of the Charles Boyer character. I saw The Visit years ago and it really made an impression on me. I could see you including it here. Other Ingrid Bergman performances that I enjoyed are Intermezzo (American), her portion of The Yellow Rolls Royce, Inn of the Six Happiness.

Looks like we're on the same page for a lot of her movies! Yeah, Gaslight is so frustrating! I definitely think what you said about Charles Boyer is accurate and I'd agree with it. Thanks for watching!!

I haven't seen The Visit, but you make it sound interesting. Ingrid Bergman is one of my favorite actresses. When I made a list of my favorite 100 movies, 4 of hers were in the top 60, and 2 in the top 10. Here is my top 10 Ingrid Bergman list 1. Casablanca 2. Notorious 3. Murder on the Orient Express 4. Gaslight 5. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 6. For Whom the Bell Tolls 7. indiscreet 8. Spellbound 9. The Inn of Sixth Happiness 10. Anastasia Cactus Flower and Arch of Triumph barely missed the top 10, but deserve honorable mention. Forgot to add, good video. You do an excellent job on these, and I enjoy your channel.

Hi Nathan! Just discovered your channel a few weeks ago; it's great to see another fan of classic movies on RU-vid. I've seen about half of Ingrid's filmography, but you mentioned three I haven't yet seen/finished. Your discussion of The Visit has put it on my radar as something to watch in the near future; I have seen the 1939 Hollywood version of Intermezzo but not the original Swedish; and Cactus Flower I just couldn't get through (granted, it was on one of the movie channels late at night so that probably didn't help, but ...) Here is my list of top 10 Ingrid Bergman performances that I've seen thus far: 10. The Bells of St. Mary's: She brings such forceful joie de vivre to her character, which is quite impressive when you realize that her first marriage was crumbling at that time. The movie as a whole I find rather mawkish and overly sentimental, so I have to be in the mood but ... the performance is good. 9. Spellbound: Here we go the other direction. Love love LOVE the movie, the dream sequences like you mentioned (and also shots such as the one at the end with Dr. Murchison in the office with the gun). Her performance, on the other hand, while very good (because let's face it, when is she not?), did grab much as much as the story did. 8. For Whom The Bell Tolls: An underrated classic. Nobody really talks about this one anymore. It's long, almost three hours if I remember correctly, and it's based on Hemingway's novel of the Spanish Civil War. Her character, for all intents and purposes, is "The Girl", but she takes a non-showy part and steals every scene she's in with layers of complexity. Even despite her and co-lead Gary Cooper not having much chemistry together, this is still one of her top ten performances for sure. 7. The Inn of the Sixth Happiness: Another less-known gem, and another epic set in a land and time that doesn't get touched on much. Bergman carries this film (along with some plucky children). I would venture a guess she's onscreen for 85-90% of the film's runtime. The film flubs the landing a bit, seemingly trying to shovel contemporary Western values into what had been a very open-minded framework, but her performance is, as usual, excellent. 6. Autumn Sonata: I love me some Ingmar Bergman almost as much as I love me some Ingrid Bergman (the fact that I have partially Swedish background no doubt is a reason), but oddly enough, this for me is almost mid-tier Bergman. Ingmar, that is. Ingrid's performance is wonderful; one moment you're furious at her, the next your heart breaks, and she makes you feel it all. The film, however, didn't engage me as much. 5. Anastasia: She won best actress in 1956 for this role, and while that was partially political as a "welcome back to Hollywood" type gesture, her performance itself is the stuff of greatness. She makes you live Anna Anderson's journey with her, from the traumatized anxiety in which we find her, to slowly becoming her own person. Is she really the Grand Duchess Anastasia? History has since proven she was not, and the film is ambivalent -- but I found it fascinating that Anna figured out who she was as a person, while trying to pretend to be somebody else. 4. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde: This is the 1941 version with Ingrid, Lana Turner, and Spencer Tracy as the title characters. A delightful about face from the angelic characters she was usually cast as, Ingrid hams it up here playing a bawdy barmaid (read: prostitute in silver screen parlance) who falls in love with Tracy. It's frankly quite frightening to witness the sassy, flamboyant Ivy become confused and defeated by Jekyll's reign of terror. Not just an against-type performance but a multi-layered one as well. 3. Gaslight: Which leads us into the film that won Ingrid her first Oscar, in 1944. Over the past ten years or so this film has enjoyed quite the renaissance, as the term gaslighting has entered the lexicon. This is great because it has brought entire new legions of fans to classic cinema. The flip side is that because of this it seems to have been put into a box, with the focus being only on the actions of Boyer's character, and not enough attention given to Paula and her struggles to maintain her sanity. I don't like that they eventually turned to a Joseph Cotten-ex machina for the ending, but I do relish Paula's supreme enjoyment of the moment when the tables have turned. 2. Casablanca: This was a tough one for me, because like you I had this and Notorious as my one-two combination, natch. I'm putting this second for reasons I'll explain later. But this is the film that made me fall in love with Ingrid Bergman, as I think it did for us all. Knowing that she and her co-stars had no idea how the film would end as they were making it meant that they -- especially Ingrid -- had to shade their characters with nuance, and it made all the difference in the world. Here's looking at you, kid. 1. Notorious: The reason I chose this as my number one is that it has one of the greatest performances in cinema (Bergman's) in one of the greatest films ever. The nonchalant bravado that Alicia shows at the beginning is an act that masks her self-loathing and insecurity. She falls head over heels for Cary Grant and we feel it -- and then we feel her heartbreak when he throws her to the wolves in the name of duty. We feel her longing for Devlin even as she curses him. We feel her pity for Alex (Claude Rains in a supporting role for the ages) even as she despises him. As Alex and his mother siphon the life and energy out of her, we feel that too. It's an amazing performance, severely overlooked in my opinion. Funny how the Academy can reward performances in which an actor puts on a wig and a fake nose, but ignore an emotionally gutwrenching performance that carries you through the ringer with it. Anyways this went a bit longer than I intended but that's my two cents worth. Thanks for doing this video; I subscribed a few weeks ago and intend to keep watching going forward. All the best!

Thanks so much for the comment and for watching Matt. So glad to have you here. Read your whole top 10 and loved hearing your thoughts on these movies. I’ve noticed a trend that not many like Cactus Flower. I must’ve watched it on a good day because I still have nothing but good things to associate with it! Understand why you didn’t of course! Yes, definitely check out The Visit! Probably the most underrated one on my list, but one of the best!

I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND the powerful 1958 “The Inn of the Sixth Happiness,” which she said was one of her favorite roles. 🌟 The 3 films which she made with her then-husband, Roberto Rossellini, are also masterpieces of acting and fascinating to see her in Italian locations. They are more metaphorical, spiritual and symbolic than most Hollywood films and allow her to display a deep reservoir of emotions and psychological power.

Thank you for this list, there were some on here I'd never heard of that I'll check out because they sound very interesting 👍 Depending on what you want to achieve here, I'd put Notorious first actually. Casablanca is the best movie she's in but it's not her best performance imo. It just feels a bit uneven, even her Swedish accent is off-putting in it for some reason even though it's not a problem in any of her other films. Have you watched her colabs with her husband btw? They are curiously absent from this list.
