People did think Alex was gay, but when he married Eliza, I believe people knew that those rumours weren’t true. And John was married to Martha Manning, so there is NO FREAKING WAY he is gay! John and Alex didn’t even meet at a bar. John actually met Alexander when John was married at Washington’s camp, so no, I can clearly confirm that John Laurens is not gay. It’s not true.

@@sophieandrew3354 from the letters it does look like they were at least bisexual. Btw my Dad was gay and he was married twice bc my grandparents and his siblings weren't accepting of his sexuality. So being married doesn't mean much.

As much as I'd have loved for a Heathers character to be on the list, Emily said at the beginning they had to be CANONICALLY lgbtq+, so they wouldn't have counted 😕
i don't use this I think Whizzer should be included because Falsettos focuses a lot on the relationships in their daily lives. I am bisexual and in my last man-man relationship was hard because it’s hard to figure out how to balance our relationship and the rest of our lives. In Falsettos, Whizzer is expected to do everything that Marvin wants him to do. I love Falsettos because it focuses much more on daily life. That’s why I think Whizzer should be included.

@@ishathompson8439 I love them too, I’m gonna have “Today 4 U” as my sibling’s ringtone. They’re non-binary, and Angel is one of their favorite characters from Rent. I tend to refer to them as my “sibster”, which (as noticed) is a mix of sibling and sister, cause they were assigned female at birth.

Albin and/or Georges from La Cage deserved to be on this list. That show was the first mainstream musical to have a gay couple as the main characters, and the characters themselves are absolutely amazing.
I'd argue Collins is a better character than Angel; Angel is iconic but Collins feels more developed and flawed while still being one of the moral centres of Rent. It's touch and go, but I do prefer Collins to Angel.
The one everyone seems to forget Is Michael mell from be more chill. He is a character who's actor left it up to audience Interpretation for his sexuality, as it doesn't add anything to the story but we know he has lesbian parents

@@TylerActs86 The book. In the book it's pretty explicitly clear he's in love with Enjolras and the only reason he hangs around is because of him. In more recent productions here in the West End they've started to address it in the show.
In the book Grantaire is fairly unambiguously in love with Enjolras - romantically, though the question of sexuality isn't really addressed - and it is made explicit that all of Enjolras' romantic and passionate tendencies are directed toward the idea of France. In modern terms this is very directly translatable to 'gay' and 'asexual' respectively. But this top ten explicitly said they're only counting people who are canonically queer, not 'plausible interpretation'. So anyone from Les Mis is out. (... Cabaret still should have got in there, though. :))
(and let me be clear - by 'unambiguously', i that Victor Hugo used terms like 'all his love was bound up in him' and 'Paris was his mistress', and spent long ardent chapters on describing exactly what kind of passion each felt IN TERMS THAT map exactly onto descriptions of romantic, idealistic and / or sexual love for the period, respectively. )

You know who the best LGBTQ- musical character is? Alice from “The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals”. Small part but had one of the best solos in the musical, and her sexuality is just a part of her, but not her defining feature, she’s the best.
Bare needed more attention and focus on their love rather than just Peter’s. I know there are fumbles but Jason really loves him so much. God, that show breaks me.
