+Joshua Blackwood but All I want for Christmas goes number every year do you know any artist who's 20+ year old song can go number one every year and also why does it matter if it doesn't go number one in the us she 16 others that did lmfao you trying to point out irrelevant stuff
It was not released as single in 1994 (in fact it peaked at 11 in 2015) and back then if a song wasn't released as single it didn't chart on the hot 100 (that's the reason some big big hits like Torn or Don't speak didn't chart or get a number one)
yomismo74 That's true only in certain ways.Led Zeppelin never released a single and made the charts and there were some band I heard that 9 out their ten songs on their album were hits.
Ive heard of her a few years ago and heard one song bye bye but never thought much of it. Until 1 and a half years ago i was watching the movie that has the song when you believe and thats how i became more interested in mariah, songs, and music biography. Her voice put sone sorta trance on me and i became addicted ever since.
Mariah Carey's greatest opponent: HERSELF. She was just that epic in the first decade of her career that the public keep measuring the "present" Mariah to that. Her spectacular career is both a blessing and a curse.
This is corroborated by Billboard on their chart "Greatest artists of all time " where she ranked as the greatest female artist of all time and the 4th overall only surpassed by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Elton John also a few months ago Rolling Stone magazine ranked in the top 5 Greatest artists according to them.
Billboard ranks her on their "Greatest Artists of all time" at number 4, only surpassed by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Elton John, she is followed by Madonna at #5
Definitely. I think there were two MODERN (post-70s) singers who inspired so many VOCALLY: Whitney and Mariah. However, I'm a 90's kid (80's baby) and I distinctly recall the production/thematic shift after Aaliyah's 'One in A Million' was released. Harder beats, darker sounds with melodic, mellifluous singing. Mariah is a LEGEND. Vocally she was INCREDIBLE. I just wanted to open up the convo and definitely not argue with you, so
Brian Brown I don't think it's just singlehandedly Aaliyah's impact. Mariah had a song called The Roof the same year, Janet Jackson's That's The Way Love Goes had the same feel, 4 years prior. Although I do agree that after 1997, rnb became very much darker like you said, including releases by Mariah, Whitney and Janet the same year.
I'm a straight woman and I love Mariah Carey. And Boy George, and Erasure, and Kylie Minogue... A good music shouldn't limited to one group only, and everyone got their own taste of music we should respect each other... 👍😁😁😁🎵
+Memoirs Of Mimi's Butterfly Also straight and love Mariah. What does being straight or gay have to do with liking music? If it pleases your ears, then it's okay to listen to!
At least that song went to number 1. I always thought Can't Let Go & Anytime You Need A Friend were underrated and should have kept Mariah's number 1 streak going.
I agree. I respect all the "feat. feat." music, but always prefer the original. These days one simple song was "gangbanged" by so many musician it's hard to remember which song's which...if you now what I mean...
Although the fame, money, and pressure/scrutiny of the media and general public have taken its toll on her over the years, Mariah Carey is still one of the greatest and most impressive singers of all time and a straight up legend of music.
i just see two amazing and talented woman why do you idiots have to pit woman against each othe beyonce is a fan too both mariah and beyonce are successful living good lives unlike you haters bye
"This song almost wasnt hers" that is so misleading. The song is hers cos she wrote it. She wrote it for Gloria however. but i am not really happy with the wording of the statement.
Is it weird that some of my fav songs by Mariah aren't even #1s? - Forever - Make It Happen - Butterfly - Anytime You Need a Friend - I Stay In Love - Mine Again - Whenever You Call ... just to name a few.
+Floyd Matters Exactly! Make It Happen, Butterfly and AYNAF, Whenever You Call are my favorites too. I have to listen to more Mariah's songs... Mariah could have Butterfly as another No.1 if it was eligible to enter the chart.
The reason the Fantasy Remix is #1 is because Mariah was a pop artist that was massively successful and she paired herself with not just a rapper, but a rather controversial 'dont give a fuck' kinda rapper- that didnt happen with megastars back in the day. She popularised it with that song- for better or for worse, it brought around all the collabos of today, rihanna/eminem, beyonce/jay z, ariana/iggy etc. It just inspired artists to try something new, it was, as they say, a "Game Changer"
all i want for christmas is you should be higher. its going to be played in 100 years from now. definitely her biggest legacy song. i'd also swap out heartbreaker and put in cant let go or someday. oh and the ODB version is NOT better than the original
I agree with every single thing you just said! I had assumed Someday would be #1 when I didn't see it on the honorable mentions. Then...snubbed completely? What?
Tim Babb IT IS A TOP TEN LIST! People who complain about online top ten lists are annoying. I don't care if my favs make it on a damn list. Make your own list. Damn!
People who complain about people who complain about top 10 lists are the most annoying of all. Why would they solicit comments at the end if they didn't want a discussion? If it bothers you this much, don't read the comments.
Tim Babb There is a difference between a discussion and belitting a list but I must say, your comment was tame compared to some I have read. U didn't call anyone bad names b/c ur song didn't make their list so perhaps I overreacted. I have no problem admitting I was wrong.
I expected it to be Fantasy, and rightfully so. 20 something years later, I still hear it being played regularly. One Sweet Day was an incredible success, but it was still an R&B ballad, something that Mimi was pumping out like crazy in the 90's. Fantasy was something so different for her and has truly stood the test of time. Daydream as an album was incredible, lyrically and musically, and it still remains one of my favourite albums to this day. It's sad that Breakdown wasn't on here, but I guess it wasn't enough of a commerical success to make the top 10? Could've done with an honorable mention though! She took big risks in the 90's collaborting with ODB & Bone Thugs, but her pop sound blended so well with those genres that she made it work - very hard to do. But she effectively introduced her fans to new genres of music, which I thought was awesome.
To me, the top 10 mariah songs should be. 1) We belong together : This is the song that helped made he comeback when everyone though her comeback was over.. 2) Fantasy : Same reason as the video. It's probably one of the main influences for the singer/rapper collaboration these days 3) All I want for christmas: Even if you don't know mariah carey, you would know this song. A Xmas classic 4) Hero: Mariah once said that this song is the song that has helped many of her fans get back on her feet. One of the most motivation songs of all time. 5) Vision of love: This is the song that many artists listen to that made them what they are today. Rihanna, Beyonce, Christina has cited this song to be the song that made them wanted to have a singing career. 6)One sweet day: Obviously this song would be in the top ten since it held the record for 16 weeks at no1 on the hot 100 billboard charts. 7) Always be my baby: This song is just timeless. 8) Emotions: To me, unless you have incredible vocals, its impossible to do justice to this song. Even ariana's cover cannot top this. 9) Dreamlover: Its probably just a personal preference. I really love this song. 10) Honey: As mentioned by the video itself, it helped pushed mariah to a more hip hop style.
The reason why [I think] Fantasy ft. ODB is number 1 on the list is because of it’s legacy. The song popularised Hip-Hop and Pop Collaboration where at that time was really uncommon (but was a thing). Mariah brought Hip Hop to mainstream music with that song. In my opinion She’s a trailblazer for today’s artists who collaborate with Hip-“P”op/R&B artists.
with all those Mariah Carey hit Songs. it's so hard to make a list and countdown to 10 because all of them where successful pop favorite. Mariah is a vocal legend. anyway this is my Top 10 list: 1. One Sweet Day 2. Always Be My Baby 3. Touch My Body 4. Through The Rain 5. I Still Believe 6. I Wanna Know What Love Is 7. We Belong Together 8. Bye Bye 9. I Stay Inlove 10. My All ......and an endless list follows.
I agree. The original was musically great. The rap remix ruined the song. I am so glad the original was the singles version that got the radio airplay and wound up spending 8 weeks at number one on the pop charts.
Maybe because it's too hard to sing for most people? I mean I really love the song, but most of the time I could only listen to it, not singalong with it, cause my throat would be broken instantly... LOL
I Don't Wanna Cry is my favorite one of her #1s. Less commercially successful, it'd be Mine Again, If It's Over, I Am Free, Inseparable, Never Too Far... just to name a few. I think Butterfly deserved an honorable mention.
Here's better list IMO: 10. Honey (or Breakdown) 9. Emotions 8. Dreamlover 7. Always Be My Baby 6. We Belong Together 5. Vision Of Love 4. Hero 3. Fantasy 2. One Sweet Day 1. All I Want For Christmas Is You
Thank you! I was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else thought that one was missing. That song was everywhere when it came out. Way more than Vision of Love.
it is just responsible to the kind of music you are hearing... merging of Pop - Hip Hop and RnB that all the artist you know today is doing... So yeah it's random.... :)
Dreamlover is my #1, but Always Be My Baby comes a close second. Mariah Carey just has an awesome knack for pop songwriting, which is why she is one of the greatest of the past 50 years.

It wasn't released as a commercial single so it was ineligible to enter the Billboard Hot 100, it obviously would have gone to #1 if it had been released though.
I liked her first three albums in the early 90's where she really made great use of her record holding singing voice of 5 octave 4 notes. Fantasy was cool too, she took a song originally by Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club and made it significantly better. Mariah's one of the few artists who can really improve a song from an already very talented act. My top 10: 1. Any Time You Need a Friend 2. Make it Happen (1993 Live version is really great) 3. Without You 4. There's Got to Be a Way 5. Prisoner 6. Can't Let Go 7. Vision of Love 8. Fantasy 9. Heartbreaker 10. Through the Rain
She's not just vocalist. She is MUSIC. Sing, writing, produce her songs. Change the music industry by popularized RnB ft. Hiphop. Her laber against her to do that, she revenge. She broke her image as a vocalist with big voice by that cause there was a time hiphop was forbidden. Got manipulated by her husband, disappeared from music industry for a while people thought her career was end and cameback with massive album. She diagnosed with bipolar type 2 since 2001 and came out in 2018 cause her fuvking ex manager threaten against her with that. And now 2014-2017 she really really had bad moment again like 1999-2003. U better respect her before too late. Just remember what happened to Whitney, Prince, and MJ.

Why is no one mentioning the fact that they placed "Emotions" in "honorable mentions?" this is a disgrace to humanity, I'm calling my lawyer, REBECCA. >;(
sorry but I thought he wasn't all that compared to biggie and tupac...if you say he better than those 2.. thank you a smoking some crack from 25 yrs ago
I'm not going to lie when I hear her old songs it brings me back to a time period. Nostalgic. Not a lot of artists can do that to me on such a grand scale.
1. Emotions Still the Hardest ever she sang 2. Vision Of Love Changed the Music Landscape 3. Fantasy Is like the Salt n Pepper they Mix Together Pop and Rnb Rap.
Despite the fact that fame, money, and media and public scrutiny have taken their toll on Mariah Carey over the years, she remains one of the best and most remarkable vocalists of all time and a true musical icon. While Fantasy is a beautiful song, I believe other songs such as Vision Of Love, Hero, and even Emotions are more important. Love her or despise her, she's one of my favorite singers, and for good reason: I've heard all of these songs at various periods in my life.
"All hail and bow to Mariah Carey, The Queen of Divas, Protector of the vocal skills from the realm, Archiduchess of Vocal range/registers, Empress of agility, The unmatched, The Mellisma mother, The Goddess of Songwriting and producing, The one often imitated, but never duplicated, The embodiment of pure success",. My simpleton ears are not worthy of your talent but a simple sung phrase will be enough to heal me for all eternity.
top 5 Mariah Carey songs (my favs) Breakdown (lyrically her best work, subtle soft vocals, underrated, relatable song) The roof (lyrically her best work, subtle soft beautiful vocals, poetic, honestly one of if not her most underrated song, fan fav) Anytime you need a friend (vocally one of her best songs, chest, head and whistle notes are sharp and powerful, 9 G5s and a whistle note in less than a minute, one of her best songs, beautiful song, vocally one of her hardest songs even for her) My all (subtle soft beautiful vocals, the runs are amazing, one of her sexiest songs) if its over (vocally one of her best songs, chest voice is amazing, her letterman and grammy performance of this song are her best vocal performances of her career
1.Without You 2. One Sweet Day 3.Emotions 4.Fantasy 5. Vision of Love 6.We Belongs Together 7.All I want for Christmas 8.Hero 9.When You Believe 10.Dreamlover
Her voice is the most amazing thing. I'm 15 and I listen to the songs that were made even before I was born. But her new album that just came out is fantastic. If you think that she has no talent listen to some of the songs on her new album. My favorites are Faded, One more try, and You Don't Know What To Do. They are just so amazing.
I cannot believe they didn't include "I Still Believe" that is literally my all time favorite song and it's should had been in this list, WTF!?!?!?!?!?
***** I agree. I will alwaya love Brenda K. Starr's version better. I typically don't like when Mariah does remakes of other people's songs (with the exception of 3) but I don't like her I Still Believe remake at all.
Great list mainly. My personal list would go something like this: 10. Long Ago 9. Dreamlover 8. Fly Like a Bird 7. Make It Happen 6. Heartbreaker 5. Honey 4. Always Be My Baby 3. Fantasy 2. My All 1. The Roof
1. My all 2. Fantasy. 3. All I want for Christmas is you. 4. Hero. 5. Heartbreaker. 6. Always be my baby 7. We belong together 8. Touch my body 9. Without you. 10. One sweet day. Based on quality and popularity
#4's my favorite. Powerful and inspirational. #2 always makes me cry because it reminds me too much of people I've lost and a close friend who I'm praying doesn't leave yet. For me #1 should have been either one of those.
My list: 10.Emotions 9. Without You 8. Hero 7. One Sweet Day 6. Butterfly 5. Honey 4. You're Mine (Eternal) 3. We Belong Together 2. Vision Of Love 1. Always Be My Baby
