@@ADDvanced We’re out of noco front range. Not many good lakes here, we usually go out of state for good water. We’ve got a few around that are decent but super over populated these days, lots of wake boats so not to good for the old school speeders. I’ve seen that you guys bought some ground out here, haven’t kept up with that side. Don’t know if you’ve figured out your over heating issue yet but there has to be something plugging up the passageways in the leg somewhere, most likely anyway with your water pressure being so high. I’d pull the power head again and snake that sucker and see what you can get out.

Yes #1. If it looks like it's going 100mph siting on the trailer. It's a 'cool' boat. Curious when you re-do the floor what you'll find. You may remember I had the 20ft Avenger and had to add a lower drain plug. Being an '83 my floor was glassed over. Hand laid of course. No chopper gun.

My first project boat was also a disaster. I only lost $400 thankfully. In the end, I learned so much about boats I felt like it was worth it. I learned how to replace axle bearings on a trailer, how to tow/back a trailer in general, found out all the different kinds of boats there are, got my boating license, learned engine diagnostic skills etc. All on a 90s jet boat that never got in the water 😂 I can’t wait to look for something worthwhile now that I actually have some kind of idea what I’m doing. I totally agree about so many cool boats just left abandoned amd wasting away, same with airplanes. Overall, you've learned a ton in a relative short period of time. I agree on staying away from jet boats unless you have mechanical and boat experience. They may be inefficient as hell but not much cooler than a big block with water injected open headers and a big roost coming out the back! Actually the only jet boat like that ive been in was an Avenger with a 460 Ford! Im ready to see that Sleekcraft on the water!

Didn't piss me off, couldn’t agree more with your philosophy. I have restored a couple now, 1982 Vanguard Banshee (Glastron GT-150 Canadian copy) and a Swiftsure (Glastron CVX-16 Canadian copy), both if these get looks and comments all the time from people that see them. I do believe that qualifies them as cool, ha ha. I also have a 1980 Glastron CVX-16 that will be the next project boat. One thing, the first boat was sitting in a field on the ground, second was on a trailer in a field and the third was at the side of a house on a trailer. So ya, they all need a complete tear down and rebuild, rotten transom, stringers and floor, got these cheap or free, so I don’t mind the expense and work too much, itching is another thing, but it goes away eventually. Oh and yes, Mercury outboards all the way!

Mako's are fairly common and mostly worth restoring IF you can do it and get your "value" back meaning it will probably cost more than its worth if you are trying to flip it, you can restore it then run it as a personal boat for 5+ years and get your moneys worth out of it them probably sell it for more than what it was worth before restoration within reason.

First, all the Merc Fanboy action! Then again, I come from a completely different world of all my motors being pre-1965, including pre-OMC. Second, in the words of L. Francis Herreshoff, “If God had meant for us to have fiberglass boats, he would have planted fiberglass trees.” But in all seriousness, the Merc/OMC war rages on as big as Ole himself. Being on the OMC side of the house and into vintage/antique iron, I never have an issue with finding parts. Sierra still makes a lot of parts for the old Big Twins and the evolved versions of the Fat Fifty. My '31 Elto Super C and '29 Johnson V45 are a bit more of a challenge, but even then the parts are out there (and on occasion they are NOS). My '38 Johnson PO-38 has parts all over creation - and cheap. For the sake of full disclosure, my feeble-minded brother fell under the spell of Carl K. Fortunately, he's pretty much limited to the "Mark" era and four-cylinders. We both own a few examples of the pinnacle of Mercury engineering - the glorious "Silent Neutral" of the Dockbusters (700, 800). If you didn't guess by the quote, I go for the other end of the dock appeal. Give me an old, rotted, wooden husk of a boat and I'm sold! All of my boats have been wood and "free" (to start) since I was a kid. '59 Lyman 16.5, '61 Thompson Cortland Sea Lancer, and a '52 Wagemaker Wolverine. I doubt I could ever get the money value of the time and money I spend working on them back, but that isn't how I define their value. Then all turn heads and are definitely not built for speed. The Lyman (before being crushed by a jealous tree) and the Thompson are both awesome in rough water on Lake Ontario. For speed, I'm probably going to slap together some Sea Fleas this summer and may toss on an old '48 KE-4 for the kiddos to kick around in. On a final note, if the biggest reason for the success of Mercury was smart enough to switch to OMC, shouldn't everybody? God bless Charlie S.

Love the username!!!!!! Wood boats are cool looking but man it's just so much upkeep. They seem to require refinishing every 5 years or so, meanwhile, even after the transom, stringer and floors rot out of FG boats, the gel can still look beautiful! I was lucky enough to meet Charlie in 2016; he invited my dad and I to his lakefront home in northern illinois, and we went boating on his pontoon! Super nice guy, was very special to meet him. Is my project boat cool? 1991 Sylvan pontoon 😂. I already know the answer just wanted to add something you may have overlooked on the project boat criteria list. With the price of 'nice' boats through the roof I got one that needed some engine love and a new floor for pennies, the goal wasn't to make $ on it but to have a tool to float around the lake with the family and friends. I will get my $ back from the use of it even if I end up scrapping the boat when I'm done. This pontoon is the reason I stumbled across your content, I was looking for resources on working on old merc outboards as I've been a mercruiser guy up to this point. My merc 75 is 1/2 as cool as the V6 you run 😊. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your projects with the world.
@ADDvanced
@ADDvanced Год назад
Hard for me to get on board of any pontoon... a deck boat is a superior float by every metric other than stability while just floating, I guess? My point of this video wasn't to fix stuff up and use it, it was to give a fair warning to people who wind up dumping tons of time and money into something super boring/not very good, then hating boating because they light all their money on fire and eat it when they try to sell it. I do low key want to find a deal on a 1980s hurricane deck boat with a 5.7/Alpha, and throw bolt ons at it. Would make an excellent sleeper and would be hilarious to walk fast stuff in a deck boat. :D

Cuddy cabins are way underrated. What is cool is sort of determined by the size of the water you're on, but I put this together because I see people restoring absolute garbage and winding up thousands and thousands of dollars in the hole. Those are the people that say stupid crap like "ThE BEST DaY Of a BoAt OWnerS LiFe iS WheN TheY SeLL iT" and other dumb things like "HoLe yoU ThRoW MonEy InTo". @@ADDvanced You're right about the $thousands but it's been a fun learning adventure, same as when we bought our 1990 33' Holiday Rambler RV. I feel like I really own these things because I've had to work on every system and every aspect of them. It's a lot different than having tons of money and buying new. Hi! Stumbled across your channel, love the vids. I restored a Piranha Bagheera with my brother years ago, ended up repainting it in 2K and rebuilding the complete transom and the result is stil beautifull after 15+ years (don't know if u know the model/brand, little racy boats and the bagheera is one of the smallest models, google it, im curious what your opinion is). I dont have so much time to take it to the water as I did when I was younger and didn't had kids but won't sell it because its not in the way and in my opinion it's a cool little boat. 40hp 4cyl Mercury 2-stroke on the back is good for 50km/h not fully loaded, it's like +-30mph i believe and with some effort it pulls a kneeboard or ski's. The factory max hp for the boat is 75hp, but at the time we were able to buy a very nice 1996 40hp so thats the way we went. Greets from the Netherlands.

Foamed and glassed the floor. Hopefully putting the rear part of the cap on this week. I did the transom similar to the way you did the blue Aristocrat by cutting the back cap off. Got a ton of flack about that on the Checkmate forum. What is the latest on the Aristocrat?

Depends how far gone it is. I'm not super familiar with that model, but look at how much restored ones GO for, not asking price, but SOLD. Try to get a general ballpark. The sad fact is that most 'fiberglassics' produced from the 50s-70s were built awful, and have terrible hull designs. Hull performance and design skyrocketed forward through ModVP racing and became so much better from the 80s onwards, better ride, better speed, better cornering, etc. It is a fairly attractive boat tho! If the glass and hull is in good shape and all it needs is gelcoat restoration and a new interior, I'd say yes. If it needs parts replated, windshield is missing or damaged, stringers and transom rotted, etc, I'm going to guess no.

Well, you said v-drives and jets were no good…does a direct drive inboard count.😂 I’m restoring a ‘73 Century Ski Fury 19. Bright orange gelcoat, goofy 70’s muscle car graphics and a 440 Chrysler. Maybe you’ll make an exception? She’ll be in the water this summer. While I understand you not liking the ability to trim, but the center mounted engine gets on plane instantly and mechanically it’s simple. Love your channel and if I could upload a pic, I would. You were a massive inspiration in my project! I had a Glastron GT 15; all the Carlsons were super cool. One of my most vivid memories from the early seventies was seeing a guy launch a black and blue, sparkly Checkmate with a tower of power and a bunch of pretty girls in bikinis on it…
@ADDvanced
@ADDvanced Год назад
I mean that is a cool boat no doubt, I know exactly what you’re talking about. But for most people tackling a project boat w limited boating experience it’s a bad idea; anything that can’t trim and has a fixed rudder is going to be hard to fix up if it’s a true project. Bent driveshafts, super expensive hard to find props, hard to find service or parts. Outboard or sterndrive is superior by most metrics; I would only consider one if water skiing were super high on your list and you already had a fair amount of boating experience.
@sunbeamlands7
@sunbeamlands7 Год назад
@@ADDvanced I made plenty of boat mistakes over the years. I assessed the heck out of this one. Century’s have a big following, registry and club. This boat only had 200 hours on it. It was parked two years ago because the previous owner broke the rudder off (by doing right turns! This thing has enough power to shear a rudder!). I knew I could get the parts (NOS bronze rudder for $300). No rot, stored indoors it’s whole life. I think you’d agree; do your homework! And even though it was a great starting point, I still have hundreds of hours in it and spent twice the purchase price on parts and supplies. And driving a direct drive is more challenging…especially with a little performance rudder!

The boat looks as cool as the one in this video. Just a lot duller.
@ADDvanced
@ADDvanced Год назад
They’re worth restoring for sure! I just don’t think they make very good first project boats because the jet drive makes it slower, super expensive parts to rebuild them, which they all seem to need, and the docking and weeds are issues that make seeking out a prop version more desirable. @@ADDvanced your opinion is very well regarded. You’re a professional when it comes to boat restorations. You’ve done many. With great results. Unfortunately, i went to look at the boat yesterday. Transom wood was soft at the jet drive opening. And the gel coat was all heavily cracked on the entire deck. Would’ve needed a new transom and stripped and reapplied gel coat. Way more work than i would like to get into. Shame. It was a cool looking boat to.

I think most carlsons are worth restoring. Cosmetics are the hardest most time intensive repair, and given it’s a lower end model you could probably wind up underwater fairly quick. That said it’s still cool; what do restored ones go for?
@toddturowski9196
@toddturowski9196 Год назад
Actually a pretty good video with some insightful information and straightforward. However he contradicts himself totally with the steel prop. In one point he says don't get a V-drive because of damage you could do to it and then goes on to say steel props are better. I would never consider a steel prop for basic boating on lakes that have lots of shallow parts..all you do is hit a log and now you're getting all kinds of new gears in the lower unit instead of just replacing the prop. Aluminum props are meant to bend on purpose so they don't do damage to anything else. Also it doesn't hurt my feelings that he doesn't like tri hulls with open bows but he completely leaves out how practical boats like that are versus his closed bow boats. We would take out a speed boat type boat maybe a couple times a year tops, but the tri hull that we restored we get tons of compliments on it, and it's super practical for fishing, pleasure boating ,Beaching, or pretty much anything else.. so a big factor he left out with restoring a boat is how often are you going to use it when you're done, so that it's worth all that work you put into it
@ADDvanced
@ADDvanced Год назад
You can't trim a V-drive, so it's really easy to damage the prop. You can trim out a sterndrive or outboard, so it's really easy to avoid damaging your prop. Not sure how that is contradictory. Also, I like open bows too, there are plenty of old bajas, checkmates, and open bows that aren't totally lame. But on facebook, I see people restoring GARBAGE boats because they got them for free. It's not worth it, nobody is going to want an OMC trihull with their impossible to find parts and stupid outdrive gasket that can sink the boat. I don't care how much money you put into it, or how nice you make it, it's a bad idea.
@StephenMeyer58
@StephenMeyer58 10 месяцев назад
It's a matter of what you like, not what someone thinks is cool. The boat you show in this video to many people, including myself, is not cool. Going out on a lake and running back and forth as fast as you can would be boring. An old center console fishing boat is cool. Old Tri hull fishing boats are cool. I'm currently restoring a 1976 Caddo bass boat with an Evinrude. I can get any part I need for the Evinrude. Why would i restore this boat. Because buying one in great shape would cost around $2500, it will cost around $700. To $1200. for restoration. What's cool is up to the person, not some basic design.

If I had a dollar for everyone that said "jets are inefficient" So here we go I grew up on all drive boats through the 70's I'll List them, Outboards, Stern drives, Jets, Direct drive and V Drives. I've owned Outboard , Direct drive and a Jet. I have been able to run the Jet drive on one tank of gas faster and longer than any other "drive" boat. Learn how to drive and trim people ! Oh yeah before you all jump on me I am a mechanic by profession. Boater by passion.
@ADDvanced
@ADDvanced Год назад
Regardless of your experience, that is fact, man. And around here, facts > feelings. Jets are fun, they have great acceleration, but they are (fact) not as efficient. You will often see 20' jetboats with big blocks struggling to hit 60mph; meanwhile my 150hp outboard is hitting 59mph before even messing with the jack plate. My sterndrive small block aristocrat can hit 65ish, with way less displacement and power. Where jets really excel is MONSTER horsepower V8 builds, because they don't need worry about shearing all the gears in a sterndrive. But... for most people? They suck. Especially here in the midwest, where they clog multiple times per ride.

Oh and last summer I spent 6 hours towing in broken-down i/o"s , outboards v-drives, so I guess I could say stay away from those boats because they suck ! You are welcome to have your own opinion.
