Fixing the mistakes is difficult, but finding out that you have errors or identifying them is virtually impossible without the help of someone more experienced. Tutorials like this are extremely useful! They're a light for those who want to get better and can't. But I also know it takes patience and training to improve. Thanks for showing me the LIGHT!

Having an overall strategy and employing tactics to implement that strategy is what separates the the average player from the elites. It's amazing how many good players don't even consider this. The match between Waldner and Boll in 2004 is a great example of an effective strategy against a top level left hander. If you are playing someone with a good backhand attack, it would be foolish to keep feeding balls to his backhand.

Dear Coach. Thank you for posting this. I respect and value your lessons. May I please ask you a question? I am 60 and have been playing table tennis for 50 years. I was a backhand dominant double wing looper. State level, rated player. I am now older and much heavier. I recently had two surgeries on my left foot and need one on my left knee and right elbow. (I am right handed) I no longer have footwork. I cannot swing so much as before. I have soft hands, heavy spin, excellent placement and touch, quick reflexes and a supple wrist. I play with Jun Mizutani SZLC (which I love and it is definitely not too fast for me) Dignics 05 2.1mm (amazing rubber, love it!) forehand and Double Happiness Gold Arc 2.1mm on backhand (love this rubber too). This was before all my injuries and when I had some footwork. Considering that if I am to continue playing, I have to take into account my lack of mobility, what advice/equipment change would you give me? I would greatly appreciate it. I have seen players with mobility issues, stand close to the table and play a controlled blocking/hitting game, but they also used either long pips, short pips or anti on one side. I have all the different rubbers, I would just appreciate some advice from you. Thank you. I wish you and your family all the best. Please stay healthy and safe. Warm regards.

I played tennis, and in tennis well known to stand back so we could move forward towards the ball cause running forward is faster than backwards. Is not so much known in table tennis !! but very usable and effective cause standing at correct spot when to hit the ball is so important.

Regarding the 1st one, I thought that in modern table tennis with the bigger ball bouncing higher it's better to stay closer to the table ("new trend in table tennis") like Harimoto Tomokazu or Lin Yao Guan. You mentioned in one of your older videos that Zhang Jike is standing too far away and taking the ball too late and thus he's being overpowered by faster players who are taking the ball early. Can you please comment on this, coach?
@pingsunday
@pingsunday 4 года назад
Exactly. You are right. But the 1st mistake is that beginners tend to stand too close. They don’t have the habit too move. They don’t have the full stroke. Why the pro will stand closer than normal to deal with the big ball. It’s different. But the pro always keep a good distance and move a lot. Just look Tomokazu and Lin to see how quick they move.
@roydollins
@roydollins 4 года назад
@@pingsunday Thanks, that makes sense. In a way, standing a bit further away and taking the ball early are not mutually exclusive - you can still stand a bit further but use a quick motion to get closer to the table and hit the ball early if needed. And perhaps standing further away helps a new player to develop their strokes thanks to a lot of room around them, and once they've learnt that they can execute it closer to the table with less room?
@lucasnicolasfioramanti7878
@lucasnicolasfioramanti7878 4 года назад
Another thing. This video is directed to people that can’t level up their game, the one you mention he’s talking about a pro player problematic. In this video the coach is talking about beginner mistakes that prevent you from getting your level up. Standing too close to the table can be a problem when you don’t have the control, feeling, footwork and fitness that a pro player has. In that specifics learning stage, it is important not to play too close to table because you won’t have the speed nor the time to hit the ball correctly. When he was talking about the “new trend in table tennis” he’s talking about a new problematic that PRO players were facing, due to the new plastic ball and the style that younger pro players are adopting to play closer to the table.

@EmRatThich you said in your video that player should stand the length of the forearm away from the table but the words on the screen said it should be the length of the arm, so which is correct. You also said the optimal distance should be 40-50cm from the table; but is that the distance between the top of your bat and the table or between your feet and the table or between your body and the table?

I manage to close my gap when I corrected my biggest mistake i.e., bad footwork. Once I am moving more, suddenly the ball move much slower than it was before and this leads to me having more in-pai and this leads to me having more time to do a proper stroke. This in turn leads to me hitting through the ball with the proper stroke which means more power and spin. Proper stroke means using power from the ground and using the waist to generate the force instead of shoulder. This leads to less shoulder pain. So you see, from my personal account, correcting one mistake leads to improvement in so many other department.

What a fine video coach! Big thanks. I got a few problem about contact point, im doing pretty great for low and medium height ball, *thanks to your video*, but i got a problem when the ball pretty high, its keep out on the table and i hit the blade edge, could you explain a bit yin pai starting point and the ball contact point on pretty high ball? For example, malong using hurricane long V, good for blocker and forehand attacker, or viscaria good for backhand dominant player. Etc. Just a big categories of blades. Because i think lot of us doesnt know that this equipment suits us very well already and doesnt need to change (stick with it), *to reduce EJ virus*. I like the chinese style! In Germany the coaches often think very difficultly. In my opinion they often focus on the tactics too much and they often teach the service already in the first lessons. I think, this can be a reason, that young players can't develop fast. The result is, the rallyes are too short.

Most likely because Ma Long peaks for major tournaments where the Europeans are playing also. Ovtcharov gets to play a highly motivated focused Ma Long who happens to be better then Ovtcharov when both at their best. Like all sports Table Tennis athletes go up and down during the year. Inferior players who catch Ma Long at the right time can win but not likely at major event.

If you play with people one level above yours and you play to learn the right technique , not to win the point at all cost even cheat , lie , intimidate etc and you can practice with a coach and do routine footwork , topspin , service return and you are focused but not tense you will improve. Too much thinking and watching people way above your skills and not having a good opponents dooms you to be what you are now and nothing more...
