OH BALLS. We flubbed the Prince of Egypt into #10 with Disney instead of #9 with Dreamworks where it belongs. Since we were talking about the style of 2D-3D mix we bumbled our speech words things. SORRY GUYS! That's what happens when you stay up until 3am and get drunk on your own tears while researching beauty made by man's hands. sigh...... #CINEFAIL. In any case - it deserves an honorable mention for being gorgeous no matter what studio paid for it.

Unfortunately, 5 Centimeters Per Second, beautiful as it was, wasn't exactly good. In fact, the way I felt coming out of it was the exact opposite of the way the animation looked. Thematically, it's about as nihilistic and cynical as you can get, so my pick would probably go over to Hosoda's Wolf Children, which is beautiful no matter how you look at it.

weird, because of that director, I have only seen Children who Chase lost voices and I found it to be a well made but slightly lacking Ghibli ripoff. you might call it an homage but I found there were differences in quality that stuck out like a sore thumb compared to Ghibli. seen as Miyazaki only gets an honorable mention, I was utterly surprised at the #1. guess I have to broaden my horizon here

@elensilautulie90
@elensilautulie90 3 года назад
Princess Mononoke has a psychological depth and (overstated) naturalistic attention that very few other producers/creators but Ghibli/Miyazaki had, this is absolutely true. However, the guy wasn't rating the best plot in animated movies, he rather expressed an opinion based on a variety of factors: photography, musical score, innovative techniques, storytelling, maybe even dubbing. Maybe in terms of storytelling, Spirited Away is much more innovative than Princess Mononoke: the plot of the first one defies logic, suggests much more than telling and it's not linear. However, I completely agree that the style of Miyazaki is pretty uniform throughout his activity, and that only with the mentioned "The legend of Princess Kaguya" there was finally some kind of stylistic diversion from the general style that since Heidi and Lupin III was typically Miyazaki's. So, no-one is saying that Princess Mononoke is not beautiful enough, nor memorable.. but honestly I wouldn't make the prestige and talent of Miyazaki easily shade other inspiring works like the mentioned "Song of the Sea" or even the unlucky "The Thief and the Cobbler"..

this list was fantastic for the fact that it looks past movie names that usually come first to mind. there are so many animated movies out there, all so unique with their own feel and look. this list helped show the light on some of those more under-appreciated films and they all look so fantastic. while I have seen many I will definitely need to check out a lot on this list.

Excellent video. Liked and favorite'd. I've commented this before on another video, but I love the way you do your top 10s, they're amazing and feel oddly inspiring - by far the best I've seen on RU-vid. I know you probably won't go through the comments and this is no way to criticize the video, but I'm just wondering if you considered a couple of titles for this list - Angel's Egg, Ghost in the Shell, Wings of Honneamise, Nerawareta Gakuen (let's forget the story in this one, though) and anthology movies like Genius Party.
@CineFix
@CineFix 8 лет назад
Yeah. While there are always one or two movies even we learn about from you guys in the comments after and race to go see, we usually consider everything people say we should have or "forgot"... But it's a top 10 and even with the honorable mentions, there's only ever so much room and so things don't make the list. Of course there's more than 10 gorgeous animated films, of course there's more than 50! But something has to stay and something has to go, which is part of why we do the categories the way we do. Makes it a little for us to decide and pick other mentions, because then we are doing miki lists in the big list. Hope that helps ;)

On aesthetics alone, this is a solid list! I would DEFINTELY update Box Trolls with "Kubo and the Two Strings," but this list came before it's release: Kubo is hands down the most detailed and cinematically beautiful film to be presented in the laboring form of art which is stop animation. Rotoscoping is a topic I would love to see you guys return to and for a time was the quintessential form of animation: if that was a category alone, NOTHING beats Ralph Bakshi's "Fire & Ice." While it can be dismissed for it's simple premise and characters, the animation and technique of this film is a true gem for lovers of animation. Japanese animation/anime is one of the finer and meticulous styles that has been presented to the screen, and has helped influence several films to date as well such as The Matrix. The most original and jaw dropping I've ever seen is without a doubt is Otomo Katsuhiro's anthology masterpiece "Memories." 3 varying styles of anime that collectively highlight the 3 stories' themes that they present and the expertly crafted animation that has and SHOULD make all cinematographers drool with delight: the main story in this film that represents this best is the chapter "Magnetic Rose," which is anime at it's ABSOLUTE FINEST and outdoes anything Ghibli has put out. My last overlooked beauty that has stunning artwork, cinematic nuance, and awe inspiring voice work is "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm." Argued by most as the best Batman film made, and rightfully so. It's visually stunning with every fight sequence, Tim Burton inspired backdrops of it's 50's vibe of Gotham, and stands strong with it's story that masterfully tells a Batman story with a rewarding climax to top it. How it was overlooked by the Academy... I will never understand.

A little bit of trivia about _Waltz With Bashir_: It's not a fiction piece; it's actually a *documentary*. See many of the people interviewed for the film didn't want to have their likeness seen on film due to their involvement in the 1982 Lebanon War and the Sabra and Shatila massacre. So the filmmakers took to making the movie animated to conceal their identities.

ALTERNATIVE LIST 10. Sleeping Beauty Just look at the background, it took them more than 6 years to make the movie 9. Lupin the Third: The First This 3D animation actually seems to have it's own style, many 3D animation movies characters either look hyper realistic or that same wide eyed round shapes style 8. Kubo and the Two Strings God, just wow, those are expensive puppets... 7. Princes and Princesses by Michel Ocelot This retakes Lotte Reiniger's beautiful paper cutouts and renders them through computer animation adding detail to the intricacy 6. Le roi et l'oiseau I just wish I could visit such a place 5. The Girl Without Hands I have never seen an animation movie which was so effectively minimal with it's strokes and colors 4. Princess Mononoke Just beautiful and imaginative painted backgrounds and characters that mesh together (Kaguya was still a good option) 3. The Dark Crystal Those are some creepy puppets but also gorgeous designs. Jim Henson was a genius. (Fantastic Mr fox was still a good option) 2. The Painting They make 3D animation look so much more different than it usually does 1. Lu over the Wall Masaki Yuasa's way of animating movement is unique and the colors are so enchantingly childish WORTH MENTIONING -The Snow Maiden (1952): Cinefix really should've had a Russian animation option -The Adventures of Mowgli (1973): Cats are liquid -Loving Vincent: Waited so long...so worth it -The red Turtle -Belladonna if Sadness: Gorgeous 70's erotica animation -Summer Wars -The Secret of Nimh: Cinefix should've put a Don Bluth option, just look at the light effects throughout the movie -Idiots and angels: Bill Plympton is always weird but this one is his most beautiful film

Why does everyone who has seen this movie unanimously agree that it's beautiful? Answer: because it is and more people need to see it. Also, watch Don Hertzfeldt's It's Such a Beautiful Day if you haven't. It's beautiful in an entirely different way.
@N1rvanaGod
@N1rvanaGod 7 лет назад
I agree, i love both movies. Hosoda can make a movie so beautiful and heartbreaking it would put some Disney classics to shame, and Hertzfeldt can take a very simple concept, make a movie about it while not adding anything spectacular (visually, at least) and stil manage to make an incredible piece of work.
