It’s because Angela was presented as a scummy character throughout the majority of the series until near the end when she got humbled. So her doing something terrible doesn’t necessarily make people hate her since we know she’s mainly a caricature of that super rude and obnoxious hypocrite of the cast. Pam is presented as one of the “good guys” of the cast. Someone who’s meant to stand for “good” on the moral spectrums presented by the show. So when Pam does something bad, it hits much harder since that’s not what’s expected from her character.
Cause the show tried so much to make her and jim the "good people" so their bad behaviour never had backlash or noticed, so that make her annoying for some viewers, and i personally hate the "vanilla" vibe they had too
I think we should talk about Angela. Cheating while engaged, bullying especially to Phyllis and Kevin, hiring an assasin (for kneecapping at least) and so on.
The fact that Pam is hated for things that other characters aren’t even questioned for shows that Pam is the realest. The other characters mistakes are made into jokes and laughed off because of their personality. However pams are often written into the story and often developed into arcs because her character does make real mistakes and they do properly effect her, like any other human.
I agree although I think the issue is that the others don't pretend to be anything they're not. Angela and Dwight are always rude and weird. That's authentic. Pam (and Jim) think they're the only sane ones around while they also bully, lie, act arrogant and generally misbehave. I had the impression they were hypocrites judging others from a high horse of self-righteousness. To me the most authentic person is Dwight.
It’s because with every other character, it is acknowledged every time they do something wrong. The show shines a negative light on it. The show never does that with Jim or Pam. They are always painted as the good guys, no matter what they do. Even when they do the EXACT same bad thing that another character did (who was made to look bad for it), it tries to nudge you into siding with Jim/Pam. If the show made them look wrong when they did things that were wrong like they do for everyone else and held everyone to the same standard... they wouldn’t be hated on the way that they are. The only time Pam was ever painted to be wrong... was the time she ruined Jim’s prank, which isn’t even bad. Everyone does bad things. But the show likes to pretend that some characters do no wrong.
@@showmeyourteeth27Your ability to interpret the show is obviously dog shit. "The show wants you to like them, so I don't." Thanks for your hipster ass opinion. Is this a "Pam cheated too" argument? Angela FUCKED Dwight while engaged to Andy, and fucked Andy while telling Dwight she wasn't. Pam kissed a dude, even if you ignore the years of her boyfriend refusing to commit and being a total piece of shit, kissing one person isn't the same as repeatedly having cheating sex. Jim also isn't "shown to be the good guy" the show literally just plays out events, you can fucking react to it however you want. Jim is a level headed person who is cool in some ways, and a jerk in others, and the show doesn't hide that fact because if it did none of us would fucking be aware of his negetive qualities. You people just want to dislike popular characters. There are people like you about every dc character, medium, or topic in popular culture, you're easy to spot because your arguments are non sequiturs.
Personally I find Phyllis insufferable at times. Most of the time she's not really on camera and when she is, it's pretty ok. But there are instances where Phyllis' attidude is through the roof and she's the sassiest and most annoying person in the building.
Charles kicks the ball 100 mph at Jim's face from point blank range and proceeds to ask him why he ducked. That is my most hated moment of the entire show.
YES THANK YOU!!! I had that exact thought! The man launched the ball like a fucking rocket straight at someone's face during a parking lot kickabout lmao.
@@mozzarellakrunccy5655 I don’t see how Pam has been a brat? Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention, but I think she’s just more socially awkward is afraid of big changes. I personally don’t see her as a brat or anything like it, but that’s just my opinion I guess :/
@@nestlyyyy Well she's not that bad that's why it's hard to see sometimes. But like her whole war with Ryan even though Ryan is the worst and like when Dwight is listening to Eybody Hurts and she and Jim comfort him but like in a mocking way, and the whole thing with The Committee to Plan Parties, and when she has ttalking head about raising her hand for Jim's idea where she says "I forgot I have to support him." She's no where near the bratty levels of like Kelley, but when she does stuff like that it's like her version of Jim's pranks. It's her coping mechanism and I think it's part of her charm.
I agree with you. I don't like his first season, but after that, he was fine. And then, in the final season, he was awful again. I understand that they needed to give him an excuse to leave, but he didn't have to be so annoying and rude. But okay hahs
I really don’t understand why they screwed over Andy so bad in season 9. His character developed so much over the show, and they completely threw all of that away in the last season. He was finally with the woman he loved, but then he left her to go on a random boat trip. Andy’s character really went downhill from there. He became manipulative, controlling, and just stupid. I think that it was very unnecessary. And it kinda seemed like the writers were out of ideas, so they just made Andy a douche.
@@Pshady23 well he left for the movie so they came up with that stupid reason for Andy to leave for a while instead of just giving him a vacation or something
@@axelgonzalez1248 The boat trip with his brother was when he made the Hangover movie. So, after he came back, he was seen as a bigger douche than before. Season 8, he probably wanted out, plus the show was close to running its course at this point.
🎶you took me by the hand, and maaade me a man. That one night (one night) you made everything alriiiiiight. So wrong, so write, all night, all right, aw yeah.🎶 I didnt even have to search for this song, its burned into my brain
Hate or love Nellie, Catherine Tate did the best anyone could do with the material she was given. Personally I find her performance as Nellie hilarious, despite being annoyed by Nellie’s actions.
I still don't get how pam is hated so much... she's one of the best characters in my opinion.. she's kind and helpful to everyone .. plus no one is perfect...
I see Pam Haters as the same ones that will angrily argue to the death that 'Die Hard' is a Christmas movie. 😄 And Ryan isn't on this list? My, how the turntables...
I absolutely adore Robert California. Right up there with Creed as my favourites. Also I’m very confused about the Pam hate I thought she was a great character.
Number one for me would definitely be Phyllis. She was sweet at times, but she stole Pams wedding, let guys flirt with her so Bob could beat them up, had a hit and run with Bob that potentially left the victim dead and so many uncalled for comments like the thing that Pam can't assign clients to whoever she is sleeping with that week. Yikes.
Oh for sure!! I think she gets away with it because most of the time she is a little more forgettable. But she is a horrible person. Oh also her and Bob ran someone over on their honeymoon and just left him there.
Phyllis definitely got worse when she married Bob. She was always looking for that power and money and Bob had both so she could indulge in that lifestyle.
Same here man, I think the writers did a great job (and must have loved writing for him) I'd have loved to see more of him, whatever his actual name is.
That warehouse guy..... I’m so glad he didn’t last even an episode. I felt bad Pam had to suffer through such a brainless bully who ruined her mural in an inappropriate way.
I dunno. I always felt like Roy wasn't a terrible guy, he just took Pam for granted and never closed the deal. He loved Pam in his way ... he just wasn't very good at it.
Finally someone who agrees. I've never understood the hate. I thought he really done a fantastic job, and had some of the best lines of the whole series. And I thought he really was as fair as anyone ever was in a position of power in the show, he didn't have many biases like alot of people did in that role.
I am surprised nobody hates Holly Flax. She dumps Michael to avoid a long distance relationship and then dates that guy AJ long distance. What the heck?
She knew it was only temporary transfer to Scranton, because Toby was returning after strangler case, so it was fine having long distance for couple months, first time with Michael she thought she'd stay in Nashua for rest of her career so no real way to continue.
4:27, Charles Minor was hired before Michael quit, in fact it was the fact that Charles became Michael's new boss that started the ball rolling to make Michael want to quit
This is a hot take but I really like Robert California. Season 8 wasn’t great and obviously Michael would’ve have been better but I think he was a good character and usually pretty funny.
I feel like I’m the only one who didn’t mind Nellie all that much, she was eccentric at points and the villain arc was kinds annoying but her story later on kinda redeemed her for me.
Personally I always kinda hated Darrel after he threatened to say Dwight & Toby sexually harassed his sister after his workers comp scam got exposed, that was just such a shitty thing to do that I always looked at him differently after that, I know he got better but I still never forgot about that lol
I think the moniker, Mini-Jim should've been assigned to Clark, not Pete. He was more clever and thinking up pranks and schemes, et cetera. Even Dwight said he looked like a Schrute, thinks like a Halpert, and acts like a Beesly> Not sure what "acts like a Beesly means, but oh well.
It's insane that Pam is considered the most hated character, especially of the main characters. She's great. Sure, season 9 Pam was a little annoying (as was season 9 Jim during the Philly arc), but come on. Pam's nowhere near the worst character. The worst main character is a two-fer. It's Ryan Howard and Kelly Kapoor. They could be eliminated from the show and it would be better
I don't have to change your mind bc you're right. I'd mention Andy too but it's like he has different personality modes and isn't always consistent. Mild Andy is best Andy.
Really pleased to see a list where Gabe Lewis isn't mentioned. He really spiced up the series and became my favorite character extremely quickly. Was really surprised to go online and realize that so many people couldn't stand him lol. Good list!
The only time I actually hated him was when they brought him back for that one-off episode where Andy hires him and Pete's ex to get back at Erin and Pete. He's so cringe in that episode it physically hurts. Other than that I thought he was a pretty funny comedic punching bag
@Dead Evermore Yeah, but by the last season I felt like they destroyed every single character's good traits and bringing back Gabe for that one episode was unnecessary. But he's still my favorite :)
I love Andy, and I get a lot of hate for that, but I don’t care. His humor is fucking hilarious. Yes he has some parts that’s like, “cmon man!” But other than that, he easily makes me laugh the hardest.
i hate how they tried to make him into a second michael, in s6 he's such a genuinely sweet person and great fuckin singer - i really enjoyed his arc of 'i have anger issues but im a really good person and don't want to yell at you'. not to mention he has some adorable rich kid moments that i just find really funny ngl
I get a lot of hate for loving Andy as well. I wish I had an Andy Bernard in my life. He'd be such a good friend. He tried to do anything to make Angela happy and I wish for the same thing from a friend or a future husband.
Gabe should've been a mention because it he seems like Toby but instead of just Michael having a problem with him the whole office does. There's a lot of parallels between Toby and Gabe once you look at it.
Pams hated?! Really??? I way prefer her to Jim, she's one of my favourites! Aside from series 9-Andy is also a great character imo Also, I really love Nellie! She was one of the best things about series 9 tbh, putting her first few episodes aside I think she's a really great character
I feel like people hate Pam because they think she holds Jim back. But thats stupid to think because had he worked something out with her, the last 2 seasons would have been as messy. They see Jim as faultless and put all the blame on Pam.
I think most hated should come down to the character with whom you'd least like to spend time. Would the people who hate Pam the most really rather be around Packer, Ryan, Dwight or Angela? Those are the 4 that come to mind first as people with whom I wouldn't want to spend any time. As creepy and scary as he is, I'd rather hang with Creed than those folks. I'd prefer to grab a beer with Pam over most of the other characters on the show. Packer's gotta be the one I'd least like to encounter, even briefly. Zero redeeming qualities.
I don’t get it. Ryan was easily the best character on the show. Not in terms of develop, ent or any real character terms but in terms of just being great
I couldn't care less about Clark but I thought Pete always seemed like a nice guy. Andy is different from the others because sometimes I hate him like when he came home from the boat and got a bonus because everyone else had done a better job while he was gone and didn't seem to feel bad about it. but sometimes he's one of my favorite characters like when he said on the last episode: I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them…. And if you hate pam, you're just crazy
Erin is a perfect example of generic characters and writing. For some reason stupid = endearing is a trope in ensembles. As the show progressed she just become a complete imbecile. She never served any purpose.
Tbh I think Erin should be on this list. She bashed holly, who I like, and she continuously tries to break up Andy’s relationship with his girlfriend after she rejected him first. Then she plays the victim saying he broke her heart.
She was always kinda... Too dumb? Some of her jokes were very funny tho. It's the same way I think later seasons of Kevin made me just not laugh as hard idk
She really sucked, she should of left the show entirely when pam, Ryan and Micheal came back, pam should of became a salesman and Ryan should of became the receptionist
Andy was a really great character when the writers wanted him to be. He was probably one of the most likeable characters in seasons 5-7 and ed helms played him perfectly
I consider myself a die hard office fan, yet somehow I still love andy. I get he can be a little much at times, but he is funny, and I believe in the later seasons, filling in as the punching bag for Michael, that he did his job well.
Thing that bugged me about the Toby hate was it continuing once Michael left. They kept hating him because...a former boss they rarely listened to or respected and only intermittently followed his lead in any respect. Paper Airplane and the Finale it became especially petty.
D'angelo, Phyllis every now and then, Jan, especially Gabe, new jim, Roy, Brian, most of the warehouse guys, and Robert California as my most hated character.
It somehow shows how unrealistic yourself is. They are the ones who make this show realistic. Because they are pretty much how real people are. Not michael, pam, etc.
Yes to these! Except I did like Gabe lol. But only because he was so awful it made me laugh. Karate classes online absolutely kills me every time. I want to also add Val to the list. She was pulling a weird game on Darryl. And she just seemed rude a lot of the time. Although she had funny moments too! Like when Darryl said he thought she'd wear a sweater to the Christmas party and she says "a sweater? what am i your grandson?". It's almost like people aren't entirely good or bad lmao.
I don’t hate Brian. I thought it was an interesting moment for the series and I honestly didn’t mind. I never thought he was gonna take Pam away from Jim I just viewed him as a friend helping a friend in need
Yeah. I dont get how people thought him and Pam had a thing, because its clearly stated that Jim and Pam are friends with him and his wife. Its clear that he likes her tho, but she was just emotionally vulnerable because of all of the stuff going on.
How is Brian having a thing for Pam and making it known any different from Jim flirting with Pam, kissing her and making his feelings known while she was engaged to Roy?
I think most of the hatred started when the writers decided to let go of their efforts near the end of the series, which became especially blatant in season 9. Multiple dimensioned characters like Kevin or Jim suddely became one-dimensional. While one-dimensional characters like Nelly, Dwight, Erin or the newly introduced member of the camera-crew suddenly got multiple dimensions in their personality. The formula that worked perfectly got torn apart without any solid alternative in mind. Pam was a girl without confidence who developed into a supported mother and wife in a solid relationship. Which gave her the confidence to learn to speak out for herself and get self-secure, but out of nowhere she suddenly started doubting again. To the point where she even started flirting with a member of the camera crew who turns out to suddenly have been a long family friend (instead of a documentary crew that tries to stay neutral while the subjects being filmed don't really know why they're filming). Jim made a similar evolution from a similar insecure beginning (enjoying the safety of a lesser job(title), while settling to be a second option to the girl who picked another guy) towards a similar more self-secure adult persona. Or at least until suddenly he became the one running away from way less difficult conversations his relation with Pam initiated with. Jim started out as the outspoken one. The one who dared to confront his boss, his colleagues or the girls he likes with the lesser easy truths since he always had some base of confidence. And while he as well grew in that confidence, even kickstarting his own company, he lost his ability to communicate without any provocation that would explain such a drastic devolution. Suddenly, he becomes the guy who physically runs to his car, up to the roof to escape... what exactly? The exact thing he had been known for the whole series: being the rational one in the room. In a situation where he wasn't even risking to lose his job in an industry which he himself believes has no future to... just share his opinion about a non-issue. Do we have to believe this to still be the same guy who regulary trolls the most succesful salesman of the branch, just for the fun of it? Erin clearly was the bigger child then Andy, therefore giving Andy the space to man up and develop into a more adult character. Creating similar dimensions like Jim and Pam but on a much lighter tone. But then again, Erin suddenly becames mature while Andy tumbled back to where he supposedly came from. Without a proper motivation to do so. Without any logical context, Erin starts to see ‘through’ some supposed façade Andy would hold up. After which, without any logical context, Andy suddenly starts this huge ego-trip. While we have always known him to have been the insecure privileged guy. Which made him (have to) open up to the lesser privileged, which made him discover there’s more value in that then there was in the world he grew up in. Until the moment he suddenly decided to prioritize both his ego and his estranged family over the girl that costed him the promotion that clearly served as his second biggest achievement. In his mind by far the biggest achievements in his life, since they took him both by far the biggest efford... Apart from the inconveniences with the actor outside of the storyline, there was no credible reason to make Andy make those irrational choices. Especially not prioritise anyone of his family apart from the father who left that family, since the latter clearly was the one Andy wanted recognition from. As a bare minimum, the creators could have made his family reach out to him and let him have chosen between Erin and being accepted as a family-man. Similarly to why/how Michael Bluth stayed single throughout the series ‘Arrested Development’. Even Toby gets fully thrown under the bus by becoming completely irrelevant and disliked by everyone. While the whole point should have been how he was only unpopular because of the fact he was one of the few that took his job serious above improving personal relationships. Trying to suck up to a strangler in the hopes of scoring more likes in the office is the exact opposite of that. Toby would have worked way better if he just stayed more one-dimensional. With as the sole extra to further develop his character his obvious feelings for Pam. Either by a sudden loss of interest when she became a mom, or as the guy who might get too eager to become part of that family. The tensions between his values (which makes him perfectly suited for his job) and his personal emotions (which in many aspects contradict those values)was another briljant setup the creators just seemed to have given up upon. Instead, they opted for easier ways to keep the series running. With more new characters then they themselves could handle. Both as guests and as new 'permanent' characters. Which created humiliating bad attempts at humour if you know where they came from and emtpy narratives. Like Dwight juniors' sudden dissapearence from the office for some episodes or the fact he suddenly leaped from the ethernal virgen to the stud of the office without any development in his character. And that while he was one of the few newly casted actors with at least some potential for future succes... A massive shame since this already was a masterpiece. Before the creators decided to throw it all away and made some painful attempts to outlive their own successformula. Masterpiece ruined imo. Not sure if I ever will finish the final 5 episodes since it solely seems to eat away what I did love in these series. Not even sure if I ever want to see the series another time, since my perspective on so many good characters has changed so drastically. I hate to see how Andy got thrown away, I hate most of the new characters and I definatly hate the cheap puns with Kevin or Oscar. The Office started out as a briljant critique towards what The Office itself stands for at the end: begging to stay relevant and liked by sucking up to what's (wrongfully) pervieved to be succesfull and by cheaply kicking down on what's (wrongfully) perceived to be unpopular.
I don't know why people hate Pam. She is always so helpful and kind to everyone. I think Robert California should be on the first place... and Ryan "the temp" did not even make to the list?! What!!!
clark is a better character but hes less likeable then pete cause of how he wanted to trick naive erin....its tough but because i don't care about pete getting with erin i would rather cut him out of the show then clark who was funny...
I actually sympathize with Andy instead of hating him. Ig we all found the boat incident v off and frm guessing the past versions of Andy, he would ve tried making huge gestures in his journey for erin like singing songs with those instruments n all. It's just a bad ending for a gud character. And. Well. I hate erin instead. Why do leave Andy one summer for gabe, leaving that guy heart broken, get back with Andy, ruin his perfect relationship, then leave him heart broken for some random guy she met a few months or weeks ago. Like. Bruh
Nellie is the sole reason I don't like watching the last seasons, even though I like seeing Jim and Daryl become successful with the sports marketing thing
My problem is ranking Andy as 1 person on this list, since he was more like 3 throughout the entire thing. I believe his most likeable phase is around Season 3-4 when he comes back from anger management through Season 8. For some reason, he is completely different person before anger management and during Season 9, so I can see the hate for him there. As for Pam, I actually don't get the hate. Feel free to reply to this about why she's hated. I'm gonna check out the other video now.
i seriously didn’t even know people hated pam, she is one of the most lovable ones on the show and to me is in many ways the heart of the office (and her relationship with micheal being so at the core of the show for me) of course she has some flawed moments but she time and time again act’s compationitly and with great sensibility For starters, Jim kissed her!! (at chilli’s she was quite drunk i don’t think it was to be thought of too heavily) also roy was borderline a horrible boyfriend with some of the ways he treated her, yeah she should have broken up with him but her weak character is one of her arcs in the show!! At the beach that was a moment of vulnerability and growth, you could feel her hurt and loneliness throughout season 3 and i was rooting for her so much. Yes it was quite awkward for karen, but i don’t believe that it should have been unsaid; of course i sympathise with Karen but i mean Jim was in love with pam either way, wether or not she would have said it my main gripe with her, alongside jim (who btw i also love, even if not everything was completely moral) is that the writers make them unfunny and awkward at times, i felt like that was a bad move, it was horrible or anything they were just slightly awkward for some times, around season 5 i think it began lastly on bullying dwight. rewatching the first season, yeah, they were kinda bullying him. i don’t like it very much. BUT also like Micheal in season 1 is quite unlikeable, i think the first season was the show still finding its footing. i much prefer the frenemies relationship of season 2 onwards, and that’s who i see them as. but the art show, goodbye to micheal, consulting angela when sprinkles died, the beach confession (which i still think is such an amazing heartfelt moment in her favor! im proud of pam) frienship with dwight, advise to micheal on breaking up with jan and so so much more- she to me was the heart of the crew, the sympathy of the show. love her. giving her a big hug. yeah she was made a bit too dorky but apart from that she’s love able
The writers were clearly at sea for the last two seasons, which are mainly a use case for why the show should have ended when Carrell left. That’s why so many hated characters are focused here. Charles Minor, on the other hand, was intended to be a villain and had a smart, thought out chapter arc. Compare that to Nellie, who was just there and no one knew why. Existing characters were damaged by the last two years too obviously: they had no idea what to do with Andy and destroyed all of his character development and Pam, yikes.
Robert California had a strong start imo, when he came off as highly intelligent and intimidating to most of the usual Office characters, even a possible villian for the season, but they dropped the ball. By the end of the season they made him into a cheating, off-beat pervert. I was glad to see him go but he definitely had wasted potential.
Yes, they totally chanced the character. I was so happy to see James in the show, cause I think he makes an amazing villain, but then, they turned him into a creep
Pam was one of the only characters who cared about others feelings and tried to help them feel better when they were sad. If you analyse every character in the office as detailed as people are analysing pams, everyone else is much worse and heartless. Also surprised that Angela or ryan are not on the list.
I appreciate your assessment of Pam as a caring (if Pollyanna) soul, but there are those whose own self-awareness makes them “irritated” by those seeking better angels. Just sayin.
@@stolenart9290 and then being completely vindicated after you accept that said immature boss is dating your mom and then he breaks up with her on her birthday with you there cuz she's too old. Pam had every reason and right to not want Michael to date her mom.
I agree. I think they broke through an unnecessary wall by going down that path. We never did learn when Jim and Pam became friends with Brian and his wife, how long, etc. Never knew why they got divorced (other than to create another potential love triangle for Pam). Never fully explored if Brian had interest in Pam. The fight she had with Brian about the hot mic's didn't really make sense. It was just a lot of drifting fluff.
I can live with Ryan not being on the list, but Gabe, he was so annoying, you have no idea how many times I wanted him to leave or throw a chair at him...
