It’s even sadder to know that “Leaves from the Vine” was a song that Mako, the voice of Iroh, wrote, knowing it would be his last and that he was dying. His emotion is raw and real.

I guess it's more bittersweet, but the scene where Korra watches Jinora become an airbending master. The end of season 3 is incredibly heartbreaking, from the moment Korra's revealed to be in a wheelchair to the single tear that falls as the end credits roll. It never fails to make me cry.

When Jinora becomes an airbending master (i.e. gets her tattoos) it always breaks my heart... 😭 you see Korra's single tear and you know that her physical pain nowhere nearly matches her emotional one.

That one time Azula said her mother called her a “monster” and then admitting she was right had to hurt 😭

What about Amon and Tarrlock's suicide? That scene makes my cry every time.

Let’s be real. This is barley even scratching the surface. Avatar and Korra as a whole are serious and emotional cartoons.

To be honest, I hate when people start comparing ATLA and TLOK. If you watched TLOK expecting to get Sokka 2.0 in the cast then you’re sadly mistaken. Personally, when I was younger, I preferred watching ATLA but now that I’m older, I’ve come to appreciate TLOK for its difference, themes, and most especially its protagonist. 1. ATLA was all about the world needing the avatar and the spirituality of bending while TLOK was all about the world not needing the avatar. Korra wanted to be the avatar but she was rejected as you can see with all the villains, Amon, Unalaq, Kuvira and Zaheer. She tried to be the avatar but was ultimately broken. 2. It dealt with political issues such as fascism, anarchy, democracy, equality e.t.c. ATLA is awesome and all but TLOK also deserves praise for its direction and storylines. I admit it would have been better if Nickelodeon didn’t dick them around. TLOK doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets. Unpopular opinion: I understood when Korra lost contact with her past lives. I may have hated it but now I get why. It was all about narrative direction where Korra had to learn to forge her own path, much like Zuko. Think about it, if that hadn’t happened, we’d all be waiting anxiously for a past life to guide her while battling Zaheer. Korra had an awesome character development, from season one where she was brash and violent to season 4 where she is reserved and tries to keep the peace, while learning from all her mistakes. While the end of ATLA was an epic finale, the end of TLOK marked a new beginning showing her journey is still progressing. She was in balance with herself and was ready to be in a relationship with Asami unlike the disaster that was with Mako. I think Netflix should have taken TLOK into live action unlike ATLA. There is too much nostalgia surrounding ATLA that if it fails all in the name of money, then... TLOK has the standards of a Netflix show, edgy, and most of all, it doesn’t get the praise and recognition it deserves all because of ATLA. Think about how different it would have been had the creators been told in advance there would be 60 episodes rather than just going with the flow. The difference is in S03-04 which were better than S01-02 because they knew the number of episodes they would be working with. If Korra failed, it is all Nickelodeon’s fault for screwing up the writers, budget cuts, moving it to the website and ordering fewer episodes and basically treating the show like a side product. They gave so much attention to ATLA that with the few episodes per season in Korra, there was little time for character development for the side characters other than Korra. It’s unfair what they did which is the main reason why I want Netflix to pick up that series and do a better job with Bryke.

Well not only it's heartbreaking on Number 1 the saddest is after Iroh Sang the song. Mako the original Voice actor of Iroh and Aku has died.

When they told us sokka died, that hit hard. And when katara said “when you get to my age, you’ll be thankful for the time you had with your siblings” that hurt too

I feel like The Beach episode in ATLA is really underrated. All the memories of his childhood that come rushing back to zuko is so emotional. Even Azula was sympathetic when she said "come on, this place is depressing", implying it's memories she's missed too. It humanizes them and Mai and Ty Lee so much

No one should ever have to bury their Child. That thought alone makes that scene so much more heavy

Azula's mental breakdown should've gotten an honorable mention.

#8 was even worse because even after Korra restored Raava and the Avatar spirit, her connection to all the past Avatars(Aang, Roku, Kyoshi, Wan, etc.) remains lost... most likely forever.

The childhood tears came back when Zuko was apologizing to Iroh cause damn i was such a baby watching that scene it broke me!

I know that the last airbender is such a great show and all but korra is really really good to it's very under rated and so much in the shadow of last airbender

I would like to tell the Avatar - the last Airbander Fans just once: Watch the legend of Korra. It might be not as good as Avatar, but it is really great, deep and mature. It hase a lot of good fights and get to much hate out of nothing. Give it a try.

Another scene that breaks my heart and makes me tear up is in lok when there were new airbenders and tenzin was sitting on top of the cliff looking at aangs statue and says, 'it's like a dream dad. After 170 years, new airbenders.' and he starts tearing up whilst hugging his kids saying, 'we'll have to get used to not being the own airbenders. If only your grandfather was alive to see this.' Poor aang went through so much. Imagine all your people being slaughtered and being the last one of your whole culture and identity. He would've been so happy to see his culture expanding once again and he would've cried from sadness but happiness at the same time. I can understand why he gave tenzin most of his attention bcz their entire air nomad population starts from aang to tenzin to his kids and so on. The whole air nomad story never fails to make me cry buckets. This cartoon is honestly the best in the whole world. I always watch it every year and then wait a year to forget everything so i can re watch it. A huge thanks to the creators and everyone included :)

No question, Avatar The Last Airbender was the best show to ever air on Nickelodeon. Avatar The Legend Of Korra was also good but it had rough parts.

At least Katara's devastating moment from "The Puppetmaster" got some recognition (even though it was in the Honorable Mentions). Whenever I watch that episode, I just can't help feeling sorry for her when she breaks into tears during the closing scene.

Seeing korra's struggles and her imperfections makes me like her and legend of korra as a whole more then aang & last airbender

"I can't believe Captain remembered my Birthday, he really does care". This is also one of saddest moment from certain perspective

Something I think is quite heartbreaking on reflection is Azula's breakdown after being defeated by Zuko and Katara. She had been sadistic and ruthless her entire life and then pushed away everyone who cared about her due to paranoia and in the end it all got to much for her after seeing Zuko with everything she never had.

#2: Korra didn’t die. She was just broken.

#2 was really hard to watch as a kid, like just a season ago korra was overwhelmingly cocky and then they just torn down her character and after she barley survived being tortured she has ptsd throughout the following season.

I lost my breath when iroh become insane in jail. That was the most heartbreaking moments. It was a relief when iroh faking it.

I've got a couple more: 1. Azula's breaking point- Series Finale 2. Asami finding out about her father's ties with the equalists 3. Toph leaving her parents 4. Ty Lee and Mai Betraying Azula (though more of a gunch-wrenching than heartbreaking) 5. Katara confronting the fire bender who killed her mother.

Oh my god, Zuko reconciling with Iroh was the most emotion for me. I cried SO much hearing and seeing Zuko so sad like that!

I'd say that Zuko's reunion with Iroh is more heartwarming that heartbreaking, but it definitely causes the waterworks, every single time.

Everytime I hear Leaves From The Vine, I sob so much, and what makes this sadder is that this was the last episode the Voice Actor Mako did before he passed away

I can't believe that Tenzin losing to the red lotus, and Appa's lost days didn't make the list. These shows have too much sad stuff in them I guess.

TLoK in season 3 and 4 just made me cry the whole time. Especially the scene where Korra is crying during Jinora’s ceremony... Breaks my heart every time.

Iroh's song is not only sad because of the lyrics, tone etc. But because Mako wasn't able to finish and see how both Avatar and Samurai Jack ended up becoming great masterpieces. They are 2 of my most favorite cartoons. Even after watching ither great shows like Sopranos, BB, GOT and experiencing a lot of great Games/movies, this show has a special place in my heart

I believe Iroh's loss is what triggered his transformation into the person he is in the series (the one we all know and love). If you remember the Zuko Alone episode in season 2, Iroh writes to the family from Ba Sing Se and he is a totally different person. He conquered Ba Sing Se and was making fun of how he might just burn it to the ground. So although his loss pains me, losing Lu Ten made him question his life and his choices and made his transformation possible. I love the moments you chose! Great list!

I appreciate how much credit this list gives Korra. So many people write it off for not having the same silly air as the original Avatar had. While the OG series could obviously go dark at times, it was much more lighthearted than Korra which definitely touched on even darker subjects much more frequently throughout its time. Both are excellent shows, but to descredit Korra for being literally made for the children who were now much older has always been so disheartening to see. I love them both but Korra will always mean more to me. I appreciated its themes that respected the fact I wasn't a kid anymore, that teenagers could be moody/arrogant and had growing up to do. It was a beautiful ride that may not have been perfect, but was absolutely worth watching/telling.

Heroshi’s sacrifice at the end of season 4. Ouch. And watching the avitar connection getting destroyed was so sad. I had nightmares after season 2. But Iroh’s song and Zuko reconciling with him were definitely the most tear jerking. My heart was not ready for that.

When Appa was hurt I cried for a while. Appa was a good soul and hurt badly. Even as a adult it never fails to make me cry my eyes out.

And to know that Leaves from the Vine was the last VA recording of the legend Mako Iwamatsu before he passed away makes it more heartbreaking. RIP Mako,the legend.

Or when zuko beats Azula and she is screaming and crying, the we al realize she is only 14. Or when katara confronts the man who killed her mom. And damn when toph gets burned by zuko/ him facing his inner turmoil. 😬

A really good list. The two that I never can hold back tears from are Iroh singing at his son's grave (which always makes me double cry because you get the double whammy of the scene followed by the in memoriam screen) and Iroh and Zuko's reunion. The ease with which Iroh forgives him and embraces him is so beautiful and moving.

I knew going in that Leaves from the Vine was going to be #1, especially the very end shows that the voice actor Mako had died. Makes it even more heartbreaking
