100% agree. When Trunks found his time machine that has been there for years and Gohan finding the old insect shell...this was turning out being a sci-fi horror series.
I was a teenager the first time I watched Cell's debut, and it was utterly horrifying to witness. I was in my 10th grade class and cannot stop thinking "what if Cell appears and starts to absorb my classmates?" LMAO.
Anything Cell related from his birth to how he became perfect was terrifying in my book. And despite that he’s still my all time favorite anime villain.
I always wished that we got a fight a Cell still being on all 4s fighting Trunks from his future and Piccolo. No talking, just it's wings making big noises and having the recon bugs fuse into him to. Then after sucking Piccolos arm, he'd stand up and start talking but still make distant insect noises
Seeing Krillin get blown up by Frieza had me shook. Seeing him helpless and asking for help before exploding was disturbing to me. Same with getting impaled by Frieza’s second form and Frieza’s sadistic nature on full display.
Cell treating civilians as human shot glasses and Buu.. uhh.. how do I word this.. jumping into that guys mouth and exploding him? Both haunted me growing up. The Pendulum Room Saiyans were intense too!
When Buu turns the last of the main cast into chocolate one by one, while Piccolo and Gotenks are stuck in the time chamber is still one of the most haunting scenes I’ve seen in dragon ball
Lol that’s not scarier than Cell literally absorbing that man in the suit while we watched his body literally dissolve and melt. Android 17 getting absorbed was NOTHING compared to that 😂
@@shooteveryday6341 nah bro did you see the pleasure that he took in absorbing #17 and the horror of everybody that was present... Watching him struggle as he was inside the tail slowly being pulled through it...ugh
@@lamoynebillups3665 lol I get why you’re saying that! but bruuuh 17 is an android! 😂 atleast he was just a machine! And Cell could spit him and 18 out! Us humans don’t have any escape! We just dissolve into his food! In real life that’s terrifying!
Another thing about Cell’s reveal was how all the Z fighters were sensing Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Frieza, and King Cold at Gingertown. I remember just being so confused and freaked out about what was happening. And throw in Kami’s ominous demeanor before he fuses with Piccolo. A disturbing few episodes, and actually was my introduction to DBZ. It’s no wonder I became obsessed.
The Cell saga was scary af to me as a kid when Cell would consume all the people... Seeing all the clothes on the ground afterwards use to chill my spine
It's funny in hindsight, at least in terms of behind the scenes stuff. DBZ had blood edited out of its initial Western TV release, yet they kept Cell's absorption unchanged, which is far more confronting than a bit of blood. I'm both grateful and horrified. lol
Freeza’s 3rd transformation was literally inspired by the Xenomorph from the ‘Alien’ film franchise. Freeza’s battle power in his 3rd form was 2,500,000.
The thing I love about this countdown is that it gives some incentive to watch SOME of the filler episodes, as some of the show’s creepiest moments are spawned by them. This is definitely a solid list overall, and if I had to add an honorable mention it would be the moment Garlic Jr. unleashes the Black Water Mist upon Earth in the Garlic Jr. Saga. Though it’s a much maligned saga that’s since been glossed over, I do like that moment in particular as it showed a DBZ villain actually unleashing the essence of absolute evil upon the world. Seeing the twisted, evil expressions on the faces of the heroes is quite chilling, and it showed that Garlic Jr. and his henchmen could be a rather formidable threat thanks to his immortality and knowledge of dark powers.
Gohan about to blow pan's head off while choking her with the other hand with the most evil smile, glowing red eyes and then saying Shi Ne! (Die) was absolutely gut wrenching to watch.
Great video Ashley. I will say you could have had number 10, and Gohan's first SSJ2 transformation as similar entries, especially considering its Cell's desire to unlock Gohan's hidden power. With that come two old adages "be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it", and "don't bite off more than you can chew", and considering how Cell triggered that...enough said. Pan...I have to agree, but if you look at it closely, its kind of a call back to the Black Water Mist saga, where Gohan, Krillin, and Maron had to defend against the infected Z-warriors, including Chi-Chi. I am however surprised you didn't mention Krillin's death at the hands of final form Frieza on Namek, Piccolo's "supposed" death at the hands of Imperfect Cell, when Piccolo tried helping the Androids, and that also goes back to my earlier statement about Gohan, Piccolo dying saving Gohan from Nappa, Piccolo's death in GT, or either of Vegeta's deaths in Z. Then there's also the future Z-warriors' deaths at the hands of the androids.
Majin Buu's ability to transform people is horrifying to think about: Are they still alive and conscious even when in a form they're turned into? Because if they are, holy crap. Buu eats lot of people turned into candy, turns an entire village worth of people into clay and makes a house out of them and in one point turns an old man into a giant carton of milk and gives it to a boy he cured from blindness. Imagine the horror if the boy realized what he was drinking. So far only Vegito has shown to be capable of doing anything while transformed by Buu, which lead me to think this possibility if everyone else were still alive and conscious, unable to do anything until they're eaten, stomped or molded into a house.
A scene that hits differently now is when the news are broadcasting about imperfect Cell live. There’s a few moments where the characters are watching the broadcast but the audience doesn’t see what the characters are seeing. Instead, we hear a lot of gunshots and what we assume are people dying. Considering that, especially in the 2010s, we have live streams of mass shootings as they’re unfolding, the DBZ scenes mentioned above would feel a little too familiar.

Cell's introduction was memorable and terrifying to watch as a kid watching Toonami in the year 2000-2001. Him absorbing that one dude freaked me out for the first time. That was the first time DBZ scared me that one scene because that straight-up went to horror film territory.
Zamasu. The one Dragon Ball villain who won. It was not the way he intended, but it still resulted in the destruction of all mortal life. It literally took Zeno destroying Future Trunks's timeline to stop him from spreading out into all reality.
The first time I actually felt adrenaline shoot through my veins..... I said how in the f@#* are the going to win now? And I love Vegeta more than I like Goku. They trained hard and pushed and still lost. I wanted to jump in and do something! Lol thank God for that button!
Dragon Ball series using just 3% realism would become probably the most horrific but absolutely amazingly terrorizing horror shonen to man. Android Saga / Future Trunk's timeline would pretty much look identical to the Terminator future timeline, just without Skynet and two angsty spoiled Cyborg Teens / prissy and a angsty god with a nasty ego. Cell Saga... Just Imagine entering a city and all that is left is just mucus oozing flesh bags wrapped in clothes thrown about the entire city rotting in the sun. A city wide version of The Thing with none of the thing's weaknesses. Saiyan and Cell Saga: The Saibamen & Cell Jr.s would be simply Mars Attacks on a smaller scale number wise. Giant Piccolo, Great Ape Kid Goku/Gohan and Vegeta... King Kong that is no longer lumbering cause of size and weight, but has the mobile superiority of a normal sized Chimp / Gorilla with laser breath while retaining peak physical strength and mind. Krillin's death by Frieza would probably be equal to the heads from Scanners. Not to include the city and empty regional landscapes being literally reshaped by physical and energy attacks on a global scale would be 2012 level of destruction every fight. DBS Broly turned an entire artic cap into a molten continent. DBS Superhero Cell Max cause a near extinction level explosion and globe altering creator behind. All this happening every month to every other year. How many times have the Dragonballs been used as an MIB Neuralizer on the planet's population, just so they don't question the insanely changing environment that happens every fight, be it minor sparing in the ocean that have caused tsunamis to just a simple power up causing almost a 7.0 earthquake hundreds of miles away...
2:50 - 3:06 Personally, Gohan’s eyes glowing red, wasn’t what scared me, it was his smile as he looks at Pan, while holding her by the throat. Videl and Goten were smiling the same way as they watch. Pan was like “You’re not my Daddy. He’d never do this.” And then, Gohan was like “Die.” 😮 His laugh while charging his energy blast 😨 I was surprised that neither one of them tried to resist Baby’s mind control like Trunks did before. Thank goodness Uub intervened. A moment later, Gohan would’ve killed his own daughter.
Brolys tranformation in movie 8 his screams alongside his body literally splitting apart his jaw dislocating and his body glowing still haunts me to this day
The sad irony of Chi Chi in Gohan's dream going into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and saying Gohan has been gone too long when barely a day would've gone by for her is... that would totally be in character for Chi Chi and is THE most realistic part of Gohan's nightmare 😮💨 I hate what they did to Chi Chi in Z. I really do. Though Super Chi Chi is somehow far worse.
Is Super Chi-Chi worse? In Z, they had her constantly nagging Goku and Gohan, even and especially during world-threatening events; if they stopped training, then studying for college would mean squat with the world blown up. I suppose the few times Chi-Chi wasn't nagging Goku was during his health crisis because of the heart disease. But thanks to Chi-Chi, Gohan went from one of the strongest characters back into the biggest wimp again. I suppose the one cool thing she does in Z is slap Super Buu, but for that, she gets turned into an egg and killed; no good deed goes unpunished. Anyway... What does she do in Super? Pester Goku to work on the farm sometimes, and criticise his compulsive combat, but seems to mostly acquiesce to his habits. Kind of funny considering her DB origins, where she was a wild child who lived in the wilderness and enjoyed fighting, too. Although, a not so good thing was that she made Goku agree to marriage even though he didn't understand what it was, yet I guessed that detail worked out in the end. Maybe becoming a mother changed her? Since she went from a badass into a control freak with obsessions on "normalcy."
Honorable mentions: Super Buu forcing himself down a man's throat and causing the dude to explode from the inside out. 2nd form Frieza impaling Krillin and bouncing up and down to cause him more pain. Final form Frieza mercilessly beating Vegeta
Cell was my favorite. Nightmare becoming reality. Then when he became 'perfect', he was so.. regal. Almost dignified. So to see him lose control against Gohan was really enticing.
Just imagine hearing on the news that a bunch of deflated human corpes was what was left of the city before hearing the news speaker also get drained. Nobody knowing wtf is going on not even the heroes you expect to pop up and save your planet as usual. Cell's introduction was terrifying and a masterpiece. What also made me a bit more terrified was how SSJ2 Gohan was shown. Bro's personality shifted into something that made me scared of saiyans in general and even feared for cell.
My favorite Dragon Ball sagas are The Android + Imperfect Cell Sagas from Z, and the goku black saga from Super. Absolutely the best written sagas and both have really amazing twists and mysteries throughout. Love them for that.
Im surprised universe 9’s erasure isn’t on the list. That was the moment when everyone realized that the Zenos and the Grand Priest weren’t bluffing about the losing universes being erased
Goku nightmare about android 17 and 18 still sticks with me today 😮😮 same when goku is having that nightmare about fighting 19 and 20 while suffering from the heart disease 😮😮
The assassination of Krilin in the first Dragon Ball should’ve been on this list. The monster Tambourine killed many of the strongest fighters and knocked out Goku. Those were some scary times in the dragon ball franchise.
These are definitely the scariest moments in all few Dragon Ball anime shows that are still meant for millions of people between the ages of 12 and 66.
A lot of those are definitely terrifying no doubt. I have to say the most for me is when Super Buu uses the human extinction attack. Always tough to watch the helplessness in that one
How about dodoria killing namekians, frieza brutal beating of vegeta, Nappa killing the z fighters And bardock father of goku movie that movie was brutal
Dark DragonBall moments: When Kid Goku found Krillin killed by Tamborine, When Piccolo blew a hole through Goku's shoulder and elbowed him Dark DBZ moments: Super Buu's human extinction attack, Videl's savage beating by Spopovovich, Imperfect Cell absorbing that rich guy, Dr.Gero stabbing a hand through Yamcha, Android 19 beating up Goku whose suffering from the heart virus, Cell absorbing Android 18, Future Gohan being killed by the Androids, Android 18 breaking Vegeta's arm, Majin Vegeta killing the tournament audience to goad Goku into fighting him, Super Buu physically and psychologically toying with Gohan during their fight, Frieza killing Vegeta on Namek, Recoome breaking Gohan's neck on Namek
An odd attention to realism in Dragon Ball was that they refrigerate the dead bodies to prevent decay, before they could be revived by a wish. This aspect was abandoned later on; I don't know if it was because the Dragon Balls became more effective, or the writer merely forgot.
As a massive Dragonball Fan: Here’s my top 10 most terrifying moments: 10: King Piccolo curb stomps Goku… King Piccolo beating Goku clean with no tricks, help, henchmen etc just showed LEVELS 9: Androids curbstomping the Z Fighters…. Android 18 and 17 one shotting the Earthlings 2 shotting Trunks and humiliating Vegeta means we KNOW even if Goku didn’t have the heart virus and was 100% fresh, he would lose BADLY to them 8: Merged Zamasu being a complete monster… We’ve seen Fusion before but NOT this powerful…. He NEVER moved in the entireity against Goku Vegeta and Trunks during their fight…. 7: Moro absorbing Merus’ power and having angel abilities 6:Nappa cutting off Tien’s arm after 2 attacks…. We KNEW they were powerful… We KNEW they were beasts but disarming him was scary as hell! 5: Recomme Breaking Gohan’s neck 4: Black Freiza one shotting Ultra Ego Vegeta AND Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku at the same time… Considering Mastered Ultra Instinct shouldn’t be hit and Ultra Ego is a form which is designed to take hits…. Black Freiza is an absolute monster! 3: Human Extinction Attack 2: Buu destroying the earth and Goku being too anxious to use instant translocation.. 1: The entire Cell Arc… Imperfect Cell was terrifying intelligent and creepy… The way he lowered his power level until he saw the androids and his tactics was so smart…. Perfect Cell 3 shotting Super Vegeta and then making future trunks quit was insane… but then we got 10 days until the Cell Games… We thought Goku pushed the SSJ Form to his limit and then Cell makes Goku QUIT!!!! We was all in astonishment and shock… Then Goku says he will pick his next person, Cell then LIKKLEMANS Trunks Vegeta and Piccolo by saying if you pick them you’re wasting my time 😂😂😂😂
One scene from GT that was really terrifying was after Goten beat that buff guy that was controlled by baby. Everyone was clapping then seconds later, one of the bystanders began to feel sick then he started talking like baby. That really messed me up as a kid

Not necessarily "scary" but one of the hardest scenes for me to watch was the fight between Videl and Spopovich. It was one of the most brutal beatdowns in the series and though in the end, Spopovich got what he deserved, it was still soooo cringe inducing and hard to watch. I really wanted Gohan to get revenge on him but Babidi beat him to it
Actually there is. Gohan, Krillin & Bulma were hallucinating because of those aliens so it was a fake(meaning none of it was real) Namek in the end That statement alone tells me you didn’t pay attention at all…. Or you just don’t know what fake means.
Another terrifying Zamasu moment was in Goku Black's rant about his origin: an alternate version of Chi-Chi and Goten were murdered by Zamasu, after he stole Goku's body. Plus, that version of Goku was trapped in Zamasu's old body, also helpless to the cruel god's attacks.
I feel like Omega Shenron's moment of winning is a bit underestimated, the moment when Vegita has the monologue when he sees there is no way to beat the dragon and that the second planet he can home is almost gone.... it's dark
Gohan and the orphan children should be recognized as a terrifying moment. We never knew the fate of those kids that was captured n they were left behind by their leader
In both Goku and Gohan's nightmares the only flaw I saw with them was that Goku wouldn't have known what 17 and 18 looked like since he'd been out of commission since his fight with 19. Similarly, Gohan had never seen Cell (other than the chrysalis he found with Trunks by Cell's Time Machine). Also, there's a part right before evil Buu appears where good Buu is begging Mr. satan to leave for his own safety. He does the echoing "GO NOWWWW!" line but then Mr. Satan tries to turn back for Buu, when Buu lets out this wild, animalistic "GOOOOOOOO!!!!!" that just really displayed how scared and how much pain Buu was in. The voice actor for Buu did an amazing job with that and none of the other re-dubs including Kai ever touched on that again.
Buu going inside that hunter blowing him up😂 Cell eating 17 and 18 gave me nightmares early 90's. I was not allowed to wat that serie when aged 6. Then the 2000's cam3😂
Some terrifying twists in Super that I'd consider terrifying in a bad way: - Gods of Destruction are a thing - Beerus ordered Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta; thereby undermining one of the largest acts of evil committed by the Evil Emperor. There is dialogue noting he would have "done it anyway," but creating any external force disrupts one of the most effectively villainous plot threads of the series. - Beerus never revealing his hand in their planet's destruction to the two survivors (there are technically three, but the ones one Earth) - Gohan had become so weak that Ginyu, despite being a frog for 20 years, could easily kick his ass - The actual supreme being of all reality is a sociopath child creature - Future Trunks and Future Mai have to live as duplicate refugees in an alternate reality with people they know who aren't the people they know, all because instead of simply erasing Zamasu, Future Zeno erased that entire universe - The final arc is genuinely just a tournament arc - In Super Hero, the failed Gotenks fusion serves more purpose than either Goten or Trunks had throughout the duration of Super
something i always thought it was creepy as hell but almost nobody talks about, is how traumatized the people in that world must be, imagine living in constant fear knowing that at any minute the entire planet might be blown up by some alien and the strongest heroes wont even stop it because they are too busy fighting is terrifying
Frezia's third from is supposed to refrence the xenomorphs, as Akia Tymoryia liked the Aliens franchise, and had to make Freiza turn into such a monster.
