Waterloo is a shittty movie from the colonialists british who thinks they beat napoleon 1v1 when the prussians saved their asses.
@Bullet-Tooth-Tony-
@Bullet-Tooth-Tony- 3 года назад
@@simoun59 British forces did do the majority of the fighting for the Allies at Waterloo. Picton's division, which was more than 2/3 British, bore the brunt of the action against D'Erlon's corps, and it is well known that the charge of the British Household and Union cavalry brigades completed the defeat of that attack. At Hougoumont, the farmhouse itself was defended by four companies of the British Guards throughout the day, while Jerome Bonaparte's entire division couldn't complete their objective of capturing it. The second main French infantry attack of the battle was halted by a charge of the British Household cavalry, and Ney's cavalry was repulsed by mostly British infantry squares. Finally, Maitland's British Guards and the Oxfordshire Light Infantry were famously prominent in delivering the volleys and bayonet charge that routed the French Imperial Guard's attack.

I consider the Napoleonic wars sort of as world war 0 or the true ww1 as how conflict between colonies and mainland happened all across the world, and the amount of people who died fighting on both sides, and the pure depth and complication of the conflict makes it perhaps more of a world war than the first one perhaps

In my opinion, Waterloo, war and peace and Napoleon deserve the top 3 spots. All 3 were INCREDIBLY expensive and faithful to accuracy. Not to mention that Waterloo and around 12,000 extras and war and peace with 16,000 extras consisting of Soviet Army Soldiers trained on Napoleonic drill. These films were massive and deserving of recognition.

I remember seeing the reconstructed 1927 silent movie Napoleon when it debuted at Radio City Music Hall with a live orchestra. It's final scenes were shown on three parallel screens. It was introduced live on stage by director Francis Coppola and at the end he had Abel Gance on the phone who was too ill to travel (no Zoom in 1981).

@Andrew McGuire It is always possible to criticise details with films, but my point was the film itself was an excellent coverage of his earlier life and loves. I still stand by that. The film is NOT a documentary. Just for the record Brando was never one of my favored actors in any role, but that is purely personal. By far the best depiction of Napoleon was by Christian Clavier* in the French TV Trilogy (which included the brilliant John Malkovich as Talleyrand). I think there is an English translation of this series available, but I am not too sure. *Clavier also played the idiot Page to Jean Reno in Les Visiteurs! Very talented actor.

Joan Griffith walks in the footsteps of the 1951 giant Gregory Peck... and delivers in a quality totally of its own. Wonderful ! For me the by far hurtful collateral damage of Brexit was, that this wonderful production could not be completed. Big sadness to Master and Commander, that some evil ''film experts'' destroyed the film, because he does not follow those over-unified story lines, that led to the crisis, Disney & Co currently are in. Thank you for this collection, Sir.

The 1962 film version of Billy Budd is also very good and set in this time, although it's less about combat and more about tensions aboard a Royal Navy ship. A very young Terence Stamp plays Billy, before he got pigeonholed into bad guy roles, and Robert Ryan is a bone-chillingly evil Claggart.

Your comments about "Mutiny" the Hornblower film are misleading. You imply that Captain Pellew is the deranged Captain in command of HMS Renown. But it was in fact, in the book, Lieutenant Hornblower, Captain Sawyer who was mentally unstable and who was incapacitated in a fall that forced the First Lieutenant to take command. There wasn't a Mutiny as such. Captain Pellew was Hornblower's mentor and friend.

0:08 Napoleon Bonaparte is indeed one of the most “prominent figures in European history”. However, whether or not he is beloved by the French themselves, he is certainly not “revered” by most other Europeans. Napoleon attacked, conquered (or tried to), killed, plundered, and looted far too many of France’s neighbours for reverence to be possible - even after all this time.

Hornblower movies are swashbuckling movies that have only a lose connection to Napoleons‘ time. In almost twenty years of the Napoleonic wars, the Frenchman didn’t fight one naval battle. He was obsessed with land warfare. „Waterloo“ must be number one or two. The duelists is almost an Arthaus movie by today’s standards. Master and Commander is a great movie, but it’s mainly on anglosaxon lists, because they didn’t contribute to the Napoleonic wars except for the British who aren’t eager to make movies out of their victories in Portugal, Spain, Belgium and France.

You clearly don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about. 'Trafalgar' ring any bells?

@@jsr1234 Well there is no Trafalgar movie out there and if it was, nobody would talk about it.

@@pascoett First off: The French did fight naval battles Secondly: people would 100% talk about a movie about Trafalgar, especially if it was to the same level of detail as Master and Commander. Thirdly: The battle of Trafalgar is in the movies That Hamilton Woman (1941) and Bequest to the Nation / The Nelson Affair (1973)

Everything shown for Hornblower 'mutiny' was wrong - mostly shown footage for 'An Even Chance'. If Hornblower in the running...where is Sharpe?

Stream TV 2.34 upcoming skirmish, so the battle of Waterloo was a skirmish? Seriously you need a dictionary and a thesaurus. The battle of Waterloo involved 72,000 French troops, 68,000 Wellington's allied troops and 45,000 Prussians. With over 60,000 casualties in all. Some damn skirmish! 😄

This is not exactly a comprehensive list. There are several notables left out. The Sharpe series for one, as well as The BBC 1973 War & Peace which at 17 episodes was longer than the earlier Russian version. Plus i don't understand why the Horatio Hornblower series was handed with individual episodes as opposed to the whole series? Abel Gance returned in 1964 with AUSTERLITZ while not as well known as his NAPOLEON 1927 was still a large production item. There are others I am probably not counting but these come to mind immediately.

The sharpe series is a joke,...looks like a cheaply made tv series, and just brutilizes the french army,...." only in the UK' i guess, as we here in the states say....but, if it makes you guys feel good.....so be it. For accurate action Waterloo and War n Peace are 1 and 2.
