I actually jumped through the entire video searching for their bit on Brick. But nothing.... I too am befuddled.
@johngumersell6936
@johngumersell6936 3 года назад
I think Brick is exempt from this list not because of its unrecognized but that because that entire movie was an homage to classic noir- therefore it wasn't a "neonoir"
@joshuathompson2404
@joshuathompson2404 3 года назад
@@johngumersell6936 You make an interesting point! I had to think on this for a moment before responding.... Question: Isn't most, if not all "neo noir" an homage to noir? Every film mentioned here seems to me to be a loving homage to noir in one way or another. I'm wondering, what about Brick's homage to the genre is different from, say, LA Confidential?
@johngumersell6936
@johngumersell6936 3 года назад
@@joshuathompson2404 neo-noir is basically an evolution of the genre into the newer ages of Hollywood. All neo noir films are noir films- but inside of the newer eras. L.A. Confidential does pay some homage to the old Hollywood hard boiled detective films, but it's a modern telling with a modern edge and isn't a full blown homage. BRICK is basically a collage of all of the old noir films. There's even snippets of dialogue and symbols such as the Maltese falcon and scenes that are spitting images of the classic ones. It was made specifically to generate the feel of the old Hollywood. The story is original, but because of its references and and conveying style it is not seen as neonoir but as a literal homage of classic film noir.
@joshuathompson2404
@joshuathompson2404 3 года назад
@@johngumersell6936 Ah, I now understand your point. Thank you for further explaining your opinion! I think at the end of the day, I would probably disagree with your analysis. I would argue that Brick did more than enough to differentiate itself/update the genre, just like the rest of the films on this list. In my mind, Brick is so much more than sheer imitation/parody/homage. It absolutely winks to the camera more than once, but I don't think that's enough to disqualify it. If any film came close to crossing the line into pure noir parody, I'd give that award to the Cohen brothers' "The Man Who Wasn't There,' but even then, I'm not sure I would be comfortable with saying "this isn't neo-noir." I mean, what is neo noir, at the end of the day, but 'new' noir. I totally get where you are coming from though, and it's totally valid. I wouldn't call "scary movie" a horror film, for instance. Categorizing anything is fraught with all kinds of peril, especially when talking about something like genre---it's all so subjective. Our opinions will just have to differ on this one :)

Thanks for assembling a great list of neo noirs. One missing film, Dark City, deserves more recognition for its brilliant re-examination of a classic film noir theme: waking up with no memory of who you are or what you've done. And it has a great Sci-Fi twist.

The lack of films by a director who's pretty much entire career is defined by neo-noir films - Michael Mann, is rather disappointing. When I think of neo-noir, some of first films that come to my mind are Heat and Collateral. Also, I'm sure Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang deserve a spot, at least in the honourable mentions. I'm not by any means criticizing your list, it's actually rather great, but I just think that those fit the margins of neo-noir better than some of the films included. Nevertheless, great job. Now on to tech-noir a.k.a. cyberpunk.

Excellent list! I watched this video about 6 months ago having not seen any of the films mentioned, but I'm very glad to say I've seen almost all of them now. Memento, Nightcrawler, and Seven are among my favourite films now. The others I also very much enjoyed. One film that I think is missing is Oldboy, which I'm sure would qualify as neo-noir. Agree with Genti on the suggestions of Slevin and specially Collateral... But if I miss something in this list, is one of the newest contemporary surprises on terms of Neo-Noir, yet "kinda" underrated in my humble opinion. Scorsese's "Shutter Island"... The narrative in that film, and yes, the soundtrack itself, which was a fresh hiting new point of view for the suspense on such kind of thriller using a "Nolanian" kind of background sound, and not forgetting about the notorious filming shots, always dropping just the enough quantity of information to the viewer who feels as lost as the main character till the very end, makes it an unmissible piece for the fans of this genre. Top lists are always something very relative, but as a fan (and writer) of Neo-Noir, I would mention this one with no doubt ;) Best regards! And nice list! got a couple films in there added on to-watch list! :)

I always have a hard time telling what a Noir film is. I use to always relate it to dark moody gangster films or dark moody detective films but now in my Cinema class it is basically a story that the main character has flaws while trying to do the right thing. Beyond my confusion of the genre, I love a lot of the films on this list, Drive, Memento, and Blade Runner being the biggest three.

I think the honorable mentions list could have been expanded a little to include some crossovers. I know, it may seem odd but for me, those are the films that not only put a classic noir in a contemporary setting but push it further and create things that might be the future definition of this genre without relying too heavily on stereotypes. The Matrix comes to mind, or Children of Men. Science-Fiction and Noir are a powerhouse of a combination when done well.

Noir and Neo noir genre are not based on just'new' and 'old' Noir. Noir as a genre, is essentially dealing with external threats, usually corruption or crime... we dont know who the baddy is and our character serves as a detective discovering what happened. (Stemming from the traditional pulp fiction books) Neo noir deals with the internal as the protagonist discovers their identity and their personal involvement to the key event. For example memento/fight club/seven/blade runner/usual suspects/ gone girl.. internal - Neo noir. Chinatown, Drive, Pulp Fiction, LA confidential - external.. they are classic noir, just made more recently.

So what exactly qualifies a film to be considered a neo-noir?
@NLozar22
@NLozar22 8 лет назад
Film-noir is a style of photography that started with the black and white era, where shadows were the only thing that you could use for visual storytelling since colors weren't there yet. Neo-noir is a similar way of storytelling however it also uses colors and modern themes. Some of the common traits of neo-noir are the following: visual storytelling mainly using shadows and light manipulation, black and white sequences, mentaly damaged protagonists, lose of memory, mysterious plots, close-ups of actors in otherwise a wide shot, brutal violence, non-linear narritives... The main thing are the visuals of the film. This shot of Ryan Gosling in Drive is an excellent example of neo-noir: learning-is-magic.com/retrospecht/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/drive-movie-1-2011.jpg One of the most common gernes in arthouse films.

My favourite neo-noir is THE KILLERS (1964) with Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson and Ronald Reagan in his last film role and the only time he ever portrayed a villain. Saw it in '64 and many many times since. A brilliant movie far superior to the 1946 version in my opinion.

Fucking Reservoir Dogs is the most Noire-y noire thing ever! It's the seedy underbelly of seedy underbelly dramas.

Seems to have forgotten that a key feature of Noir is the Femme Fatale - not women as absent but Women as key - arguably the true - antagonist!

Nobody's going to agree with this but I nominate the Kiss of Death remake. The 1947 original is considered a noir classic but I think the 1995 release is an improvement. Nicholas Cage's character is credibly creepy where Richard Widmark was cartoonish. The saintly prosecutor in the original film is replaced by a more cynical, more noir type in the remake.
