check out timothy dalton from the 1980's version - he was also extremely handsome, and a bit of a stretch considering that Rochester is supposed to be unattractive.

Jane Eyre is my favorite book, maybe it's because Charlotte Bronte and I share a birthday, lol. I've always really enjoyed this book because Jane is such a relatable character, but at the same time she is more committed to her values than most of us. My favorite part of Jane Eyre is when she comes back from Gateshead after her Aunt died and she thinks that Mr Rochester is going to marry Blanche Ingram Jane Eyre: But your are to be married. Rochester: Jane, you must stay. Jane Eyre: And become nothing to you? Jane Eyre: Am I a machine with out feelings? Do you think that because I am poor, plain, obscure, and little that I am souless and heartless? I have as much soul as you and full as much heart. And if God had possessed me with beauty and wealth, I could make it as hard for you to leave me as I to leave you... I'm not speaking to you through mortal flesh. It is my spirit that addresses your spirit, as it passes throguh the grave and stood at God's feet equal. As we are Ugh, gets to me every single time!

Really?! I loved Mia, but I do believe Ruth has been the best Eyre. I think I'm just biased because I love Michael Fassbender, and although he is far too handsome to play Rochester I thought it was a job well done:)

He did an excellent job at portraying Rochesters fiery passion, he is definitely my favorite Rochester. Mia did a very good job as well. I recently listened to it on librivox, Elizabeth Klett did an amazing job

but i didnt understand why mr rochester was playing with her. He just try to give her the feeling that he want marry the other woman.....but he dont want to do that. why he hurts her that much and is playing with her ?? this is something what irratating me ....because if you want to test the character of someone ...than you cant be realy sure about that person- and after she shows her strong character he offers her to marriage her..... i dont like that game what he was playing ....

My favorite version of Jane Eyre is the 1983 version with Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke. Especially since it's one of the rare versions that actually shows how Rochester loses his hand in the fire.

The most interesting feature to me, is that Jane only convinces herself she loves Mr Rochester after she is assured he loves her. This to me, shows that she has been through so much, she protects her heart fiercely and will only open it if she has some security of it not being destroyed.

why didn't you mention the 2006 series. I always thought it was the best adaptation as it had the plenty of time to convey the whole story and wasn't rushed. I also loved janes actress as she did seem like she was damaged from her childhood problems. Check it out if you haven't already, it's really enjoyable

exactly, the whole point of the romance between Jane/Edward is that it is their spirits that claim the other (soulmates). They are both considered plain and unattractive by conventional standards but it is what is beneath the shell of them that makes them beautiful. They fall in love and become the most beautiful person to each other. Getting back to Rochester though, what is so appealing about Rochester, well to me that is; is his bursting passion and longing. Edward is not subtle with Jane and his heart keeps exploding around her. The tension just keeps ratcheting up between them until it has to be released. Edward also is Byronic and has negative traits as well as positive. He can be manipulative, petulant, dour and explosive but as their relationship grows, Jane to quote "reinvigorates Edward with a vengeance". You see his tender, playful and oh boy passionate side. THATS what makes Rochester sexy - his character not his looks. Mr Darcy honestly is very bland and boring to me as a character. He doesn't burst and simmer with Rochester's barely restrained passion. Jane/Edward's relationship is incredibly erotic for that time period, and Bronte's wordplay actually feels like foreplay, and it makes us ache with longing tor read or watch it. Personally Pride and Prejudice in comparison is dry toast.

I love the 2011 film adaptation. Michael Fassbender was awesome as usual. And the actress who played Jane. Oh, and you can never go wrong with Judy Dench... And Jamie Bell, of course. Hahah. Plus it was just an all around great adaptation.

Personally for adaptations, I think that the 2011 one and the BBC mini-series from 2006 were more popular than the other movies listed (I think the one from 2006 was there). I had never even heard of the one from the 90s until I started watching the 2011 Jane Eyre and it popped up in my recommendations.

The version with William Hurt was perhaps the worst of the many screen versions of Jane Eyre. I think he was hopelessly miscast. The best version I've seen was a long one (available on DVD) done on Masterpiece Theatre with Ruth Wilson as Jane and Toby Stephens as Mr. Rochester. Being the longest (?) version (it spans two discs), it's less abridged than all the other versions I have seen. None of the other actresses chosen to play Jane, IMO, did as fine a job of playing the part as Ruth Wilson did.

iamdiva Yep! I also thought the other actresses who played Jane were too wooden and unemotional. But not Ruth Wilson's portrayal! I loved the way she played the scene leading up to the proposal.

Agreed. I wish (in the 2011 version) that they had cast Jane Eyre as someone other than Mia Wasikowska.

Yes! I was hoping someone would mention the BBC version, I was sort of disappointed it didn't even get one clip in this video, because it really is a fantastic adaptation. Both Ruth and Toby did an amazing job in their roles, I love that series.

Obviously the book is genius that goes without saying anyway anyone who loves it must see the movie it is soooo amazing. Even if you don't like reading the 2011 movie is brilliant it was perfectly cast and acted and so much care was put into it it's just beautiful.

My favorite piece of trivia: almost all the adaptations show rather good-looking performers playing both Rochester and Jane Eyre, neither of whom are described in the novel as being attractive. If actors like Timothy Dalton, Michael Fassbender, Toby Stephens and others are "not handsome", then the majority of us men have no chance. Conversely, if actresses like Joan Fontaine, Susannah York, Samantha Morton, Ruth Wilson etc. are "plain", then wow, the world should be full of absolutely sensational-looking women.

My piece of Jane Eyre trivia is that the same stately home in Derbyshire - Haddon Hall - has been used as Thornfield Hall in many of the TV and film adaptations (at least 4 or 5 have all used Haddon).

The 1944 version annoyed me because it blatantly removed St. John from the film just to make the love story between Rochester and Jane more believable. They made Mr. Rochester seem like a nice guy and included unimportant details that weren't in the novel just to make way for the love story.

I just watched this on 2017 lol a bit late xD... and I'm mad about the lack of scenes of the 2006 miniserie adpttion, which I think was the best one :D💕... just my opinion of course hahaha. And just as many said, this is my favorite book of all time 💕 JE FTW :)

Think i was bit too busy during the last months; moved to an apartment which was completely empty/much work (still not finished ...!). Btw, seriously your english is perfect! I can imagine it's not easy for a Moroccan to learn the english speech and way to write. Here in Europe we already had english lessons at school. That's the pronunciation of that era. I read the book first and the way they said it in the adaptations confused the shit out of me. But just like "Sinclair" is a name short for "St. Clair", Sinjin is shortened St.John.

In my opinion you missed out the very best adaptation starring Timothy Dalton made in 1983. I have seen most of the adaptations and none of them compare. How you can include the William Hurt version is beyond me. It was awful

I agree with your opinion about Timothy Dalton but I did enjoy the William Hurt/Charlotte Gainsbourg version, which I saw before the Timothy Dalton version. I didn’t like Zelah Clarke as Jane though. She looked like a little kid, and showed so little emotion. I really liked Ruth Wilson as Jane.

I adore Jane Eyre and it is my favorate love story but I found the 2011 very cold and rushed most of the way through. Many TV mini-series I've seen are better! X

For arguments sake, keeping Bertha in the attic is actually a form of kindness on his part - many other men would have, and been well within their rights, to send her to Bedlam, the famous loony bin of the time. The patients, or prisoners there, were tortured and put on display as freaks, and Rochester saved her that fate.

Author Sharon Shinn adapted a science fiction of Jane Eyre called "Jenna Starborn," in which the "Jane" character is a social outcast because she is genetically engineered. It is VERY good.

I read this novel to learn a bit more English; (for understand the english vids +comments here on RU-vid). It was my own choice, but i must admit that i don't have lots of english written books at home; i live in Austria, Europe. I like the book but it's not my favorite one. But the plot is interesting +shows how poor peoples/orphans lifes were at that special time, often horrible! From my resume you did a good job (this vid), you mentioned the main things i read in the book! As i saw in the comments, there're lots of films and TV-productions bout it; it's normal not all love the same most ... 👍

you should try ebooks, i've had the same problem i'm moroccan and i can rarely find english books i want to read. ebooks are actually really great, you might miss real books it's not quite the same but a pretty satisfying alternative

I prefer both BBC versions over the movie versions you have chosen for this video. Though, it is fair enough that movie versions won't be as good as they have to rush the story.

Personally I loved the pbs masterpiece theater version, it didn't cut out very important scenes. They always cast really good looking men or even old as hell men as roschester. Fassbender made me drool.

I'll be honest, I never knew who Jane Eyre was before this video...And as I was watching it, around the two min mark, I said Mia Wasikowska would be perfect for the role if they ever made a movie after seeing her in Lawless...Then the 3-min mark hit apparently so did the casting director who made the movie Jane Eyre.

2011 ‘Jane Eyre' adaptation started my love for Michael Fassbender. I simple loved it. Even though BBC's adaptation is amazing, I don't know which version I like the best.

I love Charlotte Bronte; Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books easily. My next tattoo is going to be a line from it, actually. Which makes me a complete dork, but I don't care. This book is amazing! Come on, young child facing adversity, losing all those close to her, and fighting for her place in society? Add in a homicidal lunatic, an egocentric hero, and true love--what's not to love? I am surprised that no one has made a horror movie from this book--this and 'The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman are the perfect fodder for a terrifying movie! The latter has had a couple of attempts that were just awful, though. Also, I have always hated the double standard in romance about perfect heroes and imperfect heroines. Mr. Rochester has many admirable qualities, but he is a flawed human even to the end of the novel after the HEA

I heard this book from Ryan Reynolds' Definitely Maybe movie. Also, why was the version with Michael Fasbender the one being shown almost through out the movie, but was not mentioned in the Movie Adaptations.
