Backup Soldier was on the list *purely* for Exodia. You seem to forget just how important Exodia was to the very early days of YuGiOh. It was a legitimate tournament strategy until the beginning of the chaos era.

@@nobody-xh6ii I hate links and haven't played much since they came out. One of the biggest reasons I hate them is because the game was REDESIGNED just so they could exist. I'll never play against anyone who wants to use them or use the rule about that special monster card zone monsters from the extra deck have to be placed in. Also, side note: Hey PENDULUMS, Pick a lane already! Monster OR Spell, not both. A monster with spell effects is called an "Effect Monster", duh. There's no need for these to exist either.

@Draco_WarriorEX
@Draco_WarriorEX 4 года назад
@@uuu12343 I agree. xyz monsters could be OK, but they are a bit too extreme, and also, they have "Ranks" which breaks the game. The game had to be modified just to accommodate xyz monsters which imo means they shouldn't exist. What good is my "Amulet of Ambition" which makes my Normal Monster gain 500 attack x the difference in monster levels when my monster battles a "Higher Level Monster" when the enemy "monster" doesn't even HAVE levels? Besides that, a "Rank 4" monster can be as powerful as a "Level 6" monster or so, so even if I got the boost it would be inadequate compared to what I should get. With all that being said, Synchro is indeed the last good idea they had. p.s. Ritual Monsters should be in the Extra Deck.

@anayos6726 4 года назад
@@neotono5536 Yeah, I look at the meta now compared to then, and the game is lucky to last even 4 turns. It's much less about setting up a combo nowadays, but more like who can make the most fuck-off boss monsters with 3+ negates in one turn. Not to mention, having to watch the opponent play a game of solitaire for 10 minutes while you twiddle your thumbs and order a pizza in the middle. Where's the fun in that? Shit, I barely see any kids playing Yu-Gi-Oh anymore (can't blame 'em though, the rules are a hot, arbitrary mess that can be broken whenever.), thus, the meaning of "children's card game" gets more and more moot every year. Sure, the games "evolved," but it went in the wrong direction. But I guess it happens when the creation of the game was based on a parody of MTG. The game has such an astounding lack of a proper resource system, that it allows such things like FTK's and OTK's to happen. It irks me that normal summons and tribute summons are limited, yet special summons aren't.

7:00 - Backup Solider was limited due to Exodia. Having access to cards like Graceful Charity, Card Destruction and Painful Choice made it extremely easy to get 5 monsters in the grave. 10:10 - Banisher of the Light comboed with it. 12:10 - Drop-off comboed with Tsukuyomi and Mask of Darkness (Which was also limited to 1 in 2006). If you got the combo off, you'd be able to lock your opponent out of drawing cards for the rest of the game. 15:15 - IFL was able to get around Gravity Bind, Trap Hole, Bottomless and Messager of Peace. At the time, those cards were the cards to keep monster heave decks in check. IFL was able to get around all of them (As well as being an absolute powerhouse in it's own right).

In regards as to why the Gadgets were semi-limited. A gadget deck in 2007 had excellent syngergy with other cards/decks such as and in no particular order: * Sniper Hunter - Gadgets had the ability to help you get hand presence once they are summoned, making them useful for fodder for sniper hunter during an era where destroying one single card on your opponent side of the field could give you a safe trip to winning. Pot of Avarice was very important to this deck as well * Chimeratech OTK / Limiter Removal swarm - they were machine type and it was a format where using Future Fusion, ultimate offering, Limiter Removal and Overload Fusion were pretty much a factor to conducting a OTK either on there own or combined. GADGETS WERE GREAT DECK THINNERS IN THIS META because it raised your odds in drawing those specific spell/trap cards by having one less of their own existing in the deck. *** GADGET BEATDOWN ------ THE deck only really needed 12-15 monsters or so and the rest comprised of cards that would keep the Gadgets on the field or do a one-for-one field removal such as: Smashing Ground, Shrink (this one very important), Sakuretsu Amor, Fissure, mirror Force, compulsory evacuation device, trap/bottomless trap hole, torrential tribute, dark holw. In This deck having all 9 gadgets along with Sangan, Giant Rats and sometimes a Lily Fairy would be more then enough. The opponent would feel guilty to spend resources in destroying a "puny" monster and they were also immune to bottomless trap holes. You could always recycle your gadgets with pot of avarice too. * field tribute / Monarchs - this was a meta of monarchs and they also saw play in some monarch decks, although destiny heros and treeborn frog did a better job. I have no mention in newer cards after the gadgets got taken off the banlist.

Lily pretty much countered/ greatly devalued 1/4+ of staple cards during her time which is why she saw play. Just to name a few: Mirror Force, Magic Cylinder, Ring of Destruction, Gravity Field, Level Limit - Area A, Reflect Bounder.... You get the idea, control was the name of the game and stall/burn cards saw a ton of play. Lily bypassed a lot of the stall cards and it never felt good having to "waste" a strong burn card such as Ring of Destruction on a mere Lily.

Gadgets were not too popular here in the tcg But the ocg had a version of the deck called "5th gadget" where theyd play 45 cards, 9 gadgets and few other monsters to be able to consistently go turn after turn drawing spells and traps while keeping monster presence with the gadgets. It was the perfect japanese deck. And since we shared lists at the time, gadgets went to 2 on the banlist

Drop Off was specifically banned because it worked well in anti-meta decks where the meta at the time included cards with such effects as "... search your deck for X card, shuffle your deck, then place X card on top of it." It also worked really well against Chain Burn which was a meta deck at the time. Also, Injection Fairy Lily combo'd with Megamorph to do ridiculous amounts of damage because Megamorph (being an equip spell card) has a continuous effect so Lily's attack would double to 6800. Outside of that, what a wonderful video. As someone who quit around a year after XYZ came out, I can say I remember many of these cards or combos being played at my local shop and I even played a few of these myself. Much nostalgia. If only yugioh would slow down back to the Apprentice Magician meta again.

Also, Backup Soldier was actually pretty good in non FTK Exodia decks back in the days: you could set your GY with tomato and Sangan, also searching for Exodia pieces and then use Backup Soldier to take 3 exodia pieces. That was very good for end the duel during your opponent turn, also I think that was the main reason for the ban of BK. I still think that deck was the best Exodia deck, very slow but good, instead of exodia FTK or Exodia Library, that are so inconsistent. Just one handtrap, a droll, and is gone. I'm still using this deck, and I kinda love it. It's the more funny way to play it, also it makes a fun duel, instead of solitary FTK Exodia.

Injection fairy lilly was a secret rare. It was ridiculously had to get one never-ending three and people playing weren't pouring their pay cheques into card games like they do now. We were the generation of card gamers starting with pokemin and yugioh and even the adult players didn't have tokens of disposable in my area. My experience with injection fairy lily was that you can pretty quickly with the game by attacking direct after a dark hole or a raigeki. Add some magic cylinders to your deck with the very limited back row removal and you can't lose.

I think the semi limit for gadgets was for the constant hand advantage they gave during the general grindy game dynamic of the time. gameplay being slower essentially meant that you went hand neutral even IF your opponent destroyed your gadget. And it wasnt like a one use thing, having 9 of the gadgets in your deck could almost assure that you had a good amount of card advantage trickling throughout the whole match that compounded more and more as turns progressed. and duels could often watching the history of yugioh series you can see just how much a pain gadgets were in the gx era. over seven turns which wasnt odd for the era, thats a lot of hand refills while also putting something on the board.

Honorable mention to Constellar Ptolemy M7. It was limited in September 2013, then unlimited the very next format and never touched again. Presumably, it was hit because it was heavily abused with Gishkis in the OCG, most notably the hand loops with Hieratics and Gustkraken. When Gustkraken was limited, a new Gishki deck was discovered using Mind Augus to loop through cards in your graveyard to eventually FTK your opponent with cards like One Day of Peace and Hand Destruction. I don’t think the Mind Augus loops used M7, but it would certainly be in the extra deck, presumably to abuse Gustkraken. This is a good reason to hit the card, but… this same ban list also limited Mind Augus, where it stayed for a long time. Gustkraken was also limited for a whole year, so presumably it wasn’t the reason for M7’s limit. It seems like the M7 limit might have been an overcorrection. The reason I still remember this is because I played a sweet X-Saber list at the time using Faultroll with M7. I was pissed that my jank deck got caught in the crossfire.

Normally you cannot use cards that makes the opponent draw if protector of the sanctuary is face up so you had to use strats like having him in face down defense position and chain a card that would flip him to (for example) your disturbance strategy. Or you had to have it in the graveyard and chain an effect that can bring him back to your field to your disturbance strategy. So even at the period it started to be limited it was not that easy to use this kind of strategy. Usually when you draw during the draw phase you would tend to shuffle your cards in the hand so your opponent would not know which card is the one you drew. By activating drop off after your opponent has shuffled the cards in his hand the judge could be called and immediately claiming a loss for the opponent because there is no way to tell which card he drew in order to be discarded.

I thought Backup Soldier was limited due to exodia decks running a muck or something. I’ve been out of the game too long to know but find your videos fun to watch how it evolved

Very early, right when painful choice was released, there were slightly degenerate and very common Exodia decks that would try to win by Backup soldiering the limbs while burning with Fire Princess.

19:43 This made me think; what if when yugioh finally dies, the last thing Connami does is get rid of the banlist complately and left players on their own?

Well, anyone can play without the ban list for fun. And in tournaments... Well, having First Turn Kill 90% of the time would not be very fun to watch would it? So, no. Even if nobody even playys YGO anymore, Konami will never officially delete the banlist.

pretty sure drop off got hit because of yata garasu. alot of people were pretty upset both ways that it got banned, and that it was even a thing to begin with. it was a card with a win condition all itself. but besides that the reason yata was super strong was in chaos decks. chaos emperor dragon with a last will. blow up the field and your opponents hand and lock them. drop off wasnt as strong as time seal but it still fulfilled the purpose then of semi locking people. but the meta realized with the chaos stuff that the GY was just as dangerous with the stuff coming out would say its not so much it was good, but that yata being hit made the meta look for a replacement, which is why time seal was also banned at that time they were trying to solve the problem with backrow idk just my 2 cents from what i remember. the last set i played when i was younger that i remember was the format future fusion came out in. pulled 2 and peeps were jelly donuts

Protector of the Sanctuary was put on the list because of Morphing Jar. Cuz if you had it up and the jar flipped, you drew 5, your opponent had 0 cards in hand.

I remember the reason why not to use Injection fairy lily because it was set to one more then anything. 1/40 chance to get it and no reliable way to draw it made it not worth playing if it was semi limited or unlimited back then people would have played it in droves.

Oppression gadgets. Way ahead of their time. The best way to run the deck wasn't "fifth gadget" which was a way to mathematically optimize your odds of getting a gadget by adding 5 cards. It was to run upstart at 3 (before upstart had become popular), and run 3 green, 2 red, and 2 yellow to get an even better ratio. At the low cost of not being able to search the entire engine. But statistically, you were most likely to open the best gadget either way (1400 green). And if you opened green, you could drop an extra gadget. The extra consistency let you see your royal oppressions, ultimate offerings and most importantly, your 1 limited limiter removal more often. Very few played 7/37 gadgets, because Jerome McHale "solved" fifth gadget. But it was run at 7/37 sometimes in OCG and it was way ahead of its time. Also, of course, it featured 3 mind crush, and raigeki break, bc that was just how OCG worked.

How about odd limitation lift? Like the one with Macro Cosmos and Dimension Fissure? Sure, one can say it was intended move to counter Tearlaments, but it works equally good against all decks that rely on GY.

Emergency Provisions was also Semilimited because the format back then was very slow and alot of people had 3 in the Sideboard, played slow all time and then win with Provisions with the Timeout Rule (same reason, why Ceasefire was limited so long). Later they changed the Timeout Rule and noone gave a shit about that card anymore.

So while 3 years late and you could have covered this in another video already, Elemental HERO - Stratos. The fact this card was banned wasn't the issue, but rather the fact it was left on the ban list for as long as it was when there were so many other HERO cards that did what it did but better that were released afterwards. And not just HERO cards in general, in other Archetypes there were cards that did just as much as it did or more on their own Normal or Special summons. Keeping it on the ban list just made zero sense and yet it was trapped there for a very long time while newer and more broken cards were released into the game.

There are no specific rulings for Protector of the Sanctuary and Disturbance Strategy, it just boils down to: "You cannot activate an effect that includes a mandatory action, when that action is being prevented by a card effect."

Gadgets were restricted because of how seamless it was for us to filter out our decks and purely for card advantage - free lightning vortex anyone? And mainly for limiter removal plays by turn 3 to catch our opponents by surprise. It was also viable because that particular meta saw the emergence of cyber dragons which saw an increase in the usage of bottomless trap holes. Speaking from experience as I was a gadget player during that era with many top 8 finishes.

Backup soldier was banned cause you could get toss exodia pieces into the grave. (You could have 3 sets of exodia in your deck) So I would set backup soldier set, a dude face down. Then use hand destruction, dumping pieces and get back the pieces I needed with it. I would win on my opponents turn because of it

Duel logs ain’t an OG Player if he didn’t know why gadgets were semi limited. It was the most hyped deck in America because it was a tier 0 deck around 2007 in the ocg. Every tournament in Japan was dominated by gadgets. But when they came to america, Konami/UpperDeck tried to limit the deck by not releasing doom caliber knight and semi limiting the gadgets. At the time everyone ran gadgets with 1 for 1 (or better) removal and won through constant card advantage.

I always thought Backup Soldier was on the list because of Exodia. Also, keep in mind the following. Just because 2 cards are very similar, does not warrant that they both be banned. Sometimes they ban only 1 card, so that another similar card can still be used. For example Monster Reborn and Premature Burial, they each took turns getting banned while the other one was allowed, this is because they wanted players to have access to a revive card, but they didn't want them to be able to have 2. Many people would rage that if Premature Burial was banned, then Monster Reborn should be banned to, and visa versa.

Injection fairy Lily. Back in the day you would put her in a pure Life gain deck teamed with a nurse reficule. As long as you did nothing but constantly keep high life points and protect lily you had a permanent 3400 beat stick your opponent would destroy with a card effect and hope you didn’t ressumon it.

So, Ultimate Offering was legal during early xyz format? I always thought that Ultimate Offering was one of those super powerful cards that got hit really early because getting extra summons just by paying life points sounds ridiculous. Then again, maybe it just came back briefly and then was just put back on like Snatch Steal or something like that?
