For Liszt, arranging was a very important part of making his name known. Although he used the best technique among the numerous virtuosos at the time, arranged works were a very important genre in expressing his style.
In the confrontation with Thalberg, both performed mostly arranged works, and one of the trends at the time was to arrange operas for piano and orchestral works. Rather than producing large, expensive sets, works can be enjoyed with just a piano, and a culture of easier access to music has been formed as the scale becomes smaller.
Liszt gave many performances in his youth and was the first pianist to introduce the concept of the recital. At the time, his performance repertoire consisted mainly of arrangements of popular works, and occasionally he also performed some works by Chopin and Czerny, whom he was familiar with or admired.
The work I am about to upload now also fully reflects Liszt's arranging style from his youth, as well as his technique as a virtuoso at the time. However, it is different from the arrangement that is faithful to the original Beethoven symphony, and it is also quite different from the fantastic elements of the reminiscence.
Schubert's arranged works are quite virtuosic, but there is no virtuosity beyond Schubert's most important melody. Perhaps it seems that the most important thing was to convey the essence of music that Schubert considered important.
Liszt's Schubert tries to convey his inner voice. In addition, the effort to be as faithful as possible to the original song rather than a paraphrase is clearly visible.
We selected ten song pieces that can be considered the most important in Schubert's works. There are quite a few arranged works by Schubert, and all of them are worth listening to at least once.
This time's Top Ten is not composed of ten pieces with outstanding artistic quality, but rather a list of things I would like to recommend to people who want to listen to Schubert's arranged works.
