127 hours. The dude legit gets pinned to an 800 pound rock while standing up for 5 days straight, with 2 breakfast burritos and a water bottle. While trying to break free he gets tired and drinks almost all of his water on the first day. After 5 days of no sleep, 3 days of no food or water, he breaks his bones in order to cut off his arm using a dull, 2 inch blade. After brutally amputating himself, manages to walk 6 miles down the canyon onto a mountain side. (again, no sleep for 5 days, or food and water for 3, and had just cut off his arm) scales the 60 ft cliff side to find a family out on a hike, leading to his rescue sorry for the mini bio, but i think some ppl could appreciate the guys persistance if they havnt heard of him

My favorite surviving story has to be Juliane Koepckes story. She survived the plane crash into the Peruvian rainforest as a sole surviver (she even has memories of her crashing down towards the earth on her seat because the plane fell apart while still in the air. She survived a fall from 10.000 feet). She only had a concussion, a broken collar bone, a few gashes on her arm and a swollen eye when she woke up. That isn't even the wierd part: She survived because she followed a stream through the rainforest till she found civilization 10 days later. By the way, she was only 17 years old. They made a movie out of this (that's why I even mention it) although the movie isn't really that good. I think it's called Miracles still happen. Yet there is a documentary called Wings of Hope which is much better.

Yeah, I remember watching Touching the Void and 127 Hours. They are some of my favorite movies of all time. 127 Hours is the first movie that made me scream like a little girl for about 2 minutes while he amputated his arm. Love the part in 127 Hours when Aron pops out of nowhere and says "Good morning everyone! It is 7 O'Clock here in Canyon Land U.S.A!" And then carries on entertaining his self with his own little show in 'Canyon Land'. Love that part so much :).
@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
+DeMlgDoge Boss That was a definite high point of the movie. I'm sure it didn't happen in real life, but it kept the viewer from sinking into despair as his situation became more grim, and it did a good job at conveying the spirit Aaron had to have had to persevere in such an incredibly fucked-up situation.

Rabbit Proof fence should have been number one. Not only is it the best film on the list, it's also the most incredible survival story too and it was done by children no less. They walked 1500 miles through the Australian out back. Grown men in modern day vehicle's have failed such a feat. Plus 2 of the girls grew up to have their own children who had to escape themselves after being kidnapped by the Australian government once again.

What about the Norwegian film Nine Lives??? :O I know there are many here who have never heard of it, but it's a wonderful film, even though it was made in 1957. Here's a bit about the story behind the film. The movie takes place during World War II and depicts the true story of Jan Baalsruds amazing escape from the German army from the coast of Northern Norway and across the border to the neutral country Sweden. Jan Baalsrud is on a sabotage mission from England to Norway together with 11 other soldiers in the winter of 1943 in a fishing boat when they are attacked by a German patrolboat. Jan Baalsrud is the only one who manages to escape and sets off towards Sweden through the enormous amounts of snow and the steep mountains of Norway. The local communities where he passes through help him despite the danger of being arrested and killed. Jan Baalsrud, snowblind and having to cut off his toes because of frost-damage survives alone in the mountains for weeks. The locals are constantly trying to get him over to Sweden, but German patrols and the winter storms delay their departure.

I'd like to add "The Impossible", is a great movie about a family caught in the aftermath of a tsunami Alive is a good movie, but it's not really factual. That movie is a Disney movie compared to the documentary. I guess is the kind of story that can't be recreated in a "hollywood" way, they need to make one of the guys a hero, when the survivors had told that there were no leaders. I think one of the parts that really annoyed me, was the "cannibalism" part, because when you hear it from the voice of the survivors is really different. There's a uruguayan documentary called "La sociedad de la nieve", is really good to check the facts.

Yeah, I know... One of those movies that you never forget. But it at least got a nod, which is better than non-USA movies usually get in these lists. I mean they did this list about dogs in movies and put corny, cliche American family comedies (that nobody remembers or cares about) over a classic like Red Dog and another movie that was apparently based on a true story as well. That really annoyed me.
