The Browns biggest mistake was drafting a rookie QB #1 as an expansion team. He was a rookie playing with other rookies and cast offs. They should have waited a couple years when they built more of the offense up, then drafted a QB. Houston made the same mistake with David Carr.

With the exception of QB Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell, the quarterbacks on this list were mainly bad because their offensive line didn't protect him very well. Think about it. Tim Couch was the first pick in the 1999 NFL Draft before the 1999-2000 season. The Cleveland Browns were just returning to the league after their so-called "3-year departure" in the NFL. The "New" Cleveland Browns were just rejoining the league and clearly weren't ready: they started 2-14 and never won a home game. Plus, Tim Couch DID make a playoff appearance in 2002 when they finished 9-7, 2nd in the AFC North. Even though they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tim Couch kinda led his team to the playoffs. He wasn't a good QB as we know today, but usually the Browns' offensive line gave up on him and he was hated upon by Browns' fans. This also happened to the David Carr; the Texans were a new franchise and we didn't really expect them to do that well. So WatchMojo, you have something top think about.

Tim Couch and Brady Quinn should share a spot. Calling Davd Carr a bust is not fair. He was drafted #1 by an expansion team that was rag-tag at best. An impossible situation, at best. Their O-line was predictably horrible, plus he was thrown right in rather than sitting for a bit behind a veteran. An impossible situation.

To me the term "bad draft pick" means that the team used poor judgement at the time of the draft. They may have overestimated the player's talent or misunderstood how he could fit into their organization. Since injuries are not foreseeable, it is not accurate to describe them as a "bad draft pick". I could accept "unlucky draft pick" or "disappointing draft pick".

As a Raiders fan, JaMarcus Russell is the biggest BUST in NFL history not Ryan Leaf. Russell was drafted #1 overall while Leaf was 2nd. Russell never signed with another team after being cut while Leaf was signed by Tampa, Dallas and Seattle and even started for the Cowboys. Russell also got $32M guaranteed while Leaf only got $11M guaranteed. Honestly, nearly every Raiders First Round picks from 2001-2017 should be on this BUST list... JaMarcus Russell, Darren McFadden, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Roland McClain, DJ Hayden, Michael Huff, Fabian Washington, Robert Gallery, Derrick Gibson, Karl Joseph and Gareon Conley. Only one that was great was Khalil Mack whom they traded for peanuts.... so stupid.

@DarthChee
@DarthChee 5 лет назад
While you can quote many analysts saying Russell would be good, many others said he would be bad it was pretty much split down the middle about half and half. Every analyst said Leaf would be good and many said he would be better than Manning. It is not just draft location it also about expectation, half of all experts believed Russell would fail, ALL thought Leaf would succeed. Russell was 7-18 as a starter 4083 yds 18 TDs 23 INTs, QB rating of 65.2, Leaf was 4-17 as a starter 3666 yds 14 TDs and 36 INTs QB rating of 50.0. The money argument doesn't make since b/c the pay scale for 1st round picks was already rising exponentially across the board and changes every year, it must be taken in context with the times. The salary cap was more than double when when Russell was drafted than when Leaf was drafted and was rising by 7 mill a year compared to 5 mill a year when Leaf was drafted (They were drafted 9 years apart and Ryan Leaf received the largest bonus by a rookie up to that point). So Russell had lower expectations, won more games, threw more touchdowns, threw less interceptions and had a higher passer rating soooo Leaf is the bigger bust by a wide margin.
@jamslam5641
@jamslam5641 5 лет назад
Wrong. JaMarcus Russell was the consensus pick in every mock draft having him going #1 overall. And I remember NFL scouts raving about him having the greatest workout they'd ever seen. walterfootball.com/draft2007.php Stats don't really matter cause Leaf had less starts due to injuring his shoulder. Not to mention Russell had more talent around him. Both were terrible. Money also don't matter cause no matter the year Russell would always be paid more as the #1 overall pick while Leaf would be paid less as the #2 overall pick. Also #1 overall picks have higher expectations to succeed over the #2 overall pick. So not only was Russell paid more money but had higher expectations to succeed. Even then Leaf had 3 other teams that were interested in his services while 0 teams wanted Russell. Bottom line no #2 overall pick can be a bigger bust than the #1 overall pick. And that's JaMarcus Russell.
@DarthChee
@DarthChee 5 лет назад
@@jamslam5641 Lane Kiffen the coach for one didn't want to draft him and you can look up videos from at the time of all the analysts that said he was going to be a bust. Again Leaf had higher expectations b/c people said he could be better than Manning, no one said that about Russell. Bottom line Leaf is considered the biggest bust by all experts not jaded crybaby Raider fans who like to play the victims. So it is possible because it happened.
@jamslam5641
@jamslam5641 5 лет назад
Peyton Manning was clearly heads and shoulders above Ryan Leaf in draft according to these experts. So no, Leaf wasn't a consensus #1 as you believe. Meanwhile no one thought any other QB was better than JaMarcus Russell: www.si.com/vault/1998/04/13/241451/the-chairmen-peyton-manning-and-ryan-leaf-are-the-class-of-the-nfl-draft-but-experts-say-one-of-them-stands-head-and-shoulder-pads-above-the-other Again, it's not "crybaby" Raiders fans who think Russell is the biggest bust, it's COMMON SENSE. No one drafts a player #1 overall and thinks the next guy will be better!!!! You draft the guy #1 overall and pay him more because you believe he's the best player available in the draft!!!! Stop being a clueless moron. Thanks.

Couch was not a bad pick. He just had no team. The Browns got screwed so hard in the expansion draft. They should have traded down to get multiple selections, or traded up lower picks for the same. Couch had no one to throw to, no one to hand the ball off to, and no one to protect him. On top of that he had a horrific front office and a rookie head coach who would never again be a head coach in the NFL after being fired by the Browns. Couch led the team to the playoffs with basically no team when Butch Davis took over. If he'd had ANY sort of team, we'd be having a different conversation about Tim Couch.

The Redskins drafted Heath Shuler when they could have drafted Larry Allen and even Kurt Warner who wasn't drafted at all. The Bengals drafted Ki-Jana Carter when they could have drafted Steve McNair, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Curtis Martin and Terrell Davis. The Browns drafted Courtney Brown when they could have drafted Brian Urlacher, Shaun Alexander, and a relatively famous quarterback named Tom Brady. The Browns drafted Tim Couch when they could have drafted Donovan McNabb, Edgerrin James, Ricky Williams, Torry Holt and Champ Bailey. The Rams drafted Lawrence Phillips when they could have drafted Eddie George, Marvin Harrison, Ray Lewis, Brian Dawkins, Terrell Owens, Zach Thomas and even Adam Vinatieri who would kick the game winning field goal against the Rams in Super Bowl 36. The Bengals drafted Akili Smith when they could have drafted Edgerrin James, Ricky Williams, Torry Holt and Champ Bailey. The Browns kill all players careers. Players leave the Browns with basically no NFL legacy. Just broken bodies and shattered dreams and regrets that they were just good enough to get snagged by the Browns early in the draft. Think of all of the great players who dodged a major career bullet by not being picked by the Browns. Having a team like the Browns existing in the NFL is just cruel to up and coming talent. You have players hoping to stay in school for as many years as it takes for the Browns to get out of the top 3 picks.

I personally think that there was some talent there that could be developed but off-field issues prevented whatever talent he did have to be revealed. The study that happened between Bridgewater and Manziel said Bridgewater is better...Browns went with the advise of a HOMELESS guy (no offense to homeless people, of course) over an official report. Of course the guy would be a bust, but its not a top ten busts because the investment didnt include a top 10 pick.

How does Manziel not make the list and how does Brady Quinn not make the list? OK not in the top ten but JFC. And what about Brandon (dick) Weeden? Really? A 28-yo rookie? Who the F was churning out the Browns' top floor nose candy?

Jeff George definitely didn't live up to the hype, but he had a long NFL career and is considered by most to have been an above-average to good QB. He could play at the pro-level. Literally every team in the league would have signed him as their #2 (and Raiders, Vikings & Falcons as their starter), so for sure not what everyone envisioned, but a far cry from a total bust.

ismokkekkush420 Phillips' cellmate, Damion Soward, 37, was found unresponsive inside the cell the two men were sharing. Prison officials discovered Soward's body after a guard heard Phillips yell, "Man down,'' according to a copy of the incident report. In letters Phillips wrote to former coaches and mentors during an 18-month span prior to Soward's death, Phillips said he'd had conflicts with gang members and accepted solitary confinement as an alternative to sharing a cell with a gang member. Soward was serving an 82-year sentence for murdering a rival gang member. Lawrence Phillips came from an abusive childhood and in all likelihood had CTE.

We have to remember that some team owners just want to throw an assumed superhero on the field and not really invest in the rest of the positions. David Carr & Tim Couch were really good in their early years, but sadly their teams never surrounded them with time to throw. Those teams just want to sell tickets.

Couch was 8-6 as a starter in 2002 before a broken leg ended his season. He led several last minute comeback wins and the Browns were dubbed the Kardiac Kids II.
