If I were a coach and had to pick just one back coming out of college, then it would be Walter Payton, no question. He ran, he caught the ball, he blocked, and he was a great teammate - a great team player. In fact, Walter *LOVED TO BLOCK* . And *TOUGH* , missing just 1 game due to injury in 13 seasons. Are you kidding me? What more can you do? In the words of teammate Steve McMichael, "Walter wasn't a running back, *HE WAS A FOOTBALL PLAYER* ." Jim Brown? No! Why? He wasn't a great teammate, and he was an inconsistent blocker. He blocked when he felt like it. Great player, yes, but he frustrated coach Paul Brown so much, that Brown at one point considered trading him. Paul Brown wrote that in his book. Walter did everything. A coach's dream!

All around Payton was the best. Purely running the football in was Barry sanders. The things he did haven’t been done ever. Payton was a stronger runner and greet teammate. It’s really hard to say. I felt like Erick Dickerson was a top 5 guy.

I'm an older fella, and a Browns fan, and while part of me feels like it is blasphemous to even think anyone other than Jim Brown is the greatest running back, I have to go with Barry Sanders. Watching him was always surreal - he looked like a video game come to life, doing things that seemed impossible. Oh, and Curtis Martin was a fine back, but he is ridiculously high on this list.

@@georgesingleton3425 I'm up there in age too, and I guess you weren't paying attention, Barry could've put the rushing record way out of reach if he hadn't retired, and all of that without a great O-line. I feel like Barry would not have fit as well in Dallas. That run and shoot in Detroit was perfect for his style. I think he would have got more yards than Emmit, but the cowboys were a better team with Emmit too. He was better at moving the chains than Barry, he was a MUCH better pass blocker, and he was more of a gamer. Emmit played better when things got tough, while Barry tended to choke a bit.
@Cucumberdrx
@Cucumberdrx Год назад
@big catfish You're kidding, right? Although he had incredible tackle-breaking abilities, Sanders was one of the most elusive runners the league had ever seen, which also equates to why he had more rushes for negative yards than any of the other greats. It can't be measured, and one can only imagine what his career would have been like if he had more talent around him. During Barry's whole career, Detroit was never considered a team with a great offensive line or a dangerous passing attack.
@Cucumberdrx
@Cucumberdrx Год назад
@jhvuv n ik65s2 good points overall, but I'd never say Barry choked. Emmitt was a better blocker and the Dallas offense definitely utilized him more effectively as a dual threat out of the backfield than what Detroit did with Barry, but Sanders never played with an entire host of HOF caliber players @ QB, TE, WR, FB, and the OL simultaneously like Emmitt did. I suspect that Barry would have led nearly every statistical running back category career-wise, in addition to multiple championships and a longer career span. I guess we'll never know though. No disrespect intended towards Emmitt, however.....he was one of the best players to ever lace them up.

Problem is… yards per carry really don’t tell us anything. Did a back get 5yds per carry as in 5 yards every carry… or 50 yards on 1 play and nine 0 yards runs? One way is great for highlight videos (and a bunch of punts)… the other way gets you a first down every 2 downs, marches you down the field and ends in a score.

Barry was incredible, every sunday was special. IMO, I would have Jim Brown # 2 and Payton # 3 and I agree Barry is the best running back we have ever seen. 10 straight years of masterpieces, even coming off an injury, he would do it over and over again and hardly ever fumbled. He was defensive players nightmare. I think the craziest statistic is he has the most negative yards in history just trying to find room to run behind that bad offensive line and this guy still ended up with 5 yards a carry for his career, now that is Insane!! I get that Bo Jackson isn't on these lists because he was injured early in his career. But seriously, if I had one RB in the history of the NFL to choose from, I would take Jackson. In the 80's, he weighed 230 lbs, could outrun cornerbacks and run over linebackers. He was so good, Marcus Allen played FB for him. He was a legit threat to score on ANY play. He was from another world. BTW, Curtis Martin? LOL

I watched a lot of them. All the way back to Brown, Sayers and Simpson. But to be honest, Payton played on some very very weak Chicago teams. Payton would have to run 40 yards side to side to get 10 yards forward. If you added up everything he had to do to get his 11K yards he probably ran for 15K. Payton was the best ever.

Of all the top backs in history… Payton had the weakest offenses. Looking at passer ratings, O-line quality (veterans and pro bowlers), and support at the skill positions (1000 yard receivers, etc) Payton had is bad… even the 85 bears had a below average passing game (ranked 16 in passing)
