Very common in Finland too. Parents tell their kids to not go near water alone because "näkki will drag them underwater", I've also heard Norway has the same story, though they again call it nøkk or nøkken.
Its sad that he doesnt mention the song "Dia Psalma - Balladen om lilla Elsa" Which is a swedish song about Näcken who lures an 8 year old girl in to the water.
well most people couldn't swim back then, not even sailors amusingly enough and to stave off drownings there are a pletora of stories with warnings to be careful around waters. The brother grimm stories, the fey, the mermaid, the ugly duckling etc ( originally danish stories ) in their original form isn't that pleasant. They are full of causinary tales of dangers back then they couldn't deal with at the time.
@@gh0st_aroo I don't think you understand the concept of /woosh if that was the first thing that came to your mind. My comment was adressing the actual conceptual use of the concepts used in the stories aka river is dangerous in the society the stories were born in but you missed that part didn't you *shrug*
I think the "Hårgavisan" (translated the as The Ballad of Hårga) should be mentioned, which is an old folk song that claimed to kill a whole village in northern Sweden as the devil played it himself and made the villagers dance to their deaths as they danced so much the skin on their feets torn off. It's a rumor that on a fullmoon night you can hear the music coming from the woods near Hårga.
I live really close to hårga, was actually there not long ago, we go every year up to the place it is said they all died. I have heard sooo many different versions off the folk lore tho, but they all have the same outcome
Means your parents weren't that interested in our folklore, which is quite sad. Our folklore is amazing and I always loved it when my dad told the stories.
I grew up with hearing stories about Trolls and I both find them facinating and terrifying. A small part of me still believe that they might exist and I know that sounds silly, but the amount of stories and incidents that you here about them here in Sweden just really makes you more open minded to the idea that they exist. Many stories claim that they transform into stone during daytime and back during night.
Sweden isn’t as sweet as you thought, ever heard of Bäckahästen? River horse in English. It plays music as Näcken with something, and lures small little children to ride on it. Then it rides in full gallop into a river and drowns the kid. *The two forms of the BÄCKMONSTER or WHAT I should call it XD*
Whoever is in charge of writing the description for the videos, you should credit Myuuji for the music, he makes it for free and all he asks is to be credited, and boy does he deserve it!
I definitely think that you guys should have included the spirit of the hopes and dreams of the one IKEA store clerk who just started off there because he/she just decided to work their to help them through college, yet the chocolate butterscotch cake and the apple cake at the cafe was just too tantalizing for him/her to give up their job at the store, because that employee discount was so worth it.
The Revanite you pronounce Näcken like this: Ne-cken Ne like you would pronounce Nestor without the “stor”. Cken like you would pronounce Chicken without the “Chi” There you go
*hears words "old man from finland" instantly reacts* "SUOMI MAINITTU!!! TORILLA TAVATAAN!" (please. do finnish urban legends. we do have few similar ones that swedish has but they have their own differences)
First of, amazing show! I'm from sweden and I'm part of a group that hosts yearly viking reenactment s. We aim to dress-/eat- and do chores according to real viking findings. As part of the reenactment comes all the storytelling. The vikings have A LOT of interesting stories when it comes to mythology. For example: People were very afraid of "Rimtursar". These were giant creatures from the cold part of the universe called Nifelheim and are said to bring eternal winter. Rimtursarna was trying to destroy the church because they couldn't stand the sound of the church bells. So people used to have a small bell on a bracelet to let people know that you're human. Loke, Odens half brother (who btw is born from a rimturse) have a lot of mischief and weirdness going on. He's married to a giant that gives birth to a snake and a giant wolf. He also turns into a horse and *clearing throat* gets down to business with a real horse. This leads to the horse giving birth to the 8 legged horse Sleipner that Odin rides around on. I could go on for hours xd
@@justnoob8141 Loke is just the swedish name for Loki, Thor is Tor and Odin is Oden. They differ a bit from the Icelandic versions were Thor is Thórr i believe and Odin is Ódinn
I remember my friends mom used to scare me and my friend from going far up in the woods or near a lake telling us that näcken will play the violin and make us go down in the water. And yes it worked at that time.
@@lukaaas8418 no, there are only 3, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. What you believe is Scandinavia is actually the Nordic countries, with Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland
Wow that was fun. I am from Finland and never I have heard those things. So fun & crazy. I know there is plenty of those from Finland too. Looking forward one day you guys making there too but yes lets go to Germany next ! Great video, much enjoyed ! Thanks 👍
Yes I know. I watch the video. I use to live just minutes away from Sweden border and I have been there many, many times but never heard of those urban legends.
Draugen is norwegian too. It's not swedish. I have looked it up and confirmed it to be sure. I am a little annoyed now. I asked previously if he could do legends from Norway because we do have them but instead we're being pushed into the swedish category.
@@steelshower7949 Krake is an old swedish word for creature. It's only really left in the very old fashioned expression "Din arma krake!" "You poor creature!" It's not used much anymore, but that's what it means 😊
I like how a lot of these overlap between the other Scandinavian countries. We also have troll and they are also described as caring for farm animals and will try and safe them if they are mistreated or in danger of fire. Same with Nisser. They will keep your home and animals safe if you treat them well.
I am from sweden :) And yes , trolls do exist :) They braid the horses main , and protect our horses cows and other animals. If you have trolls looking after your animals you are lucky :) 🇸🇪

The Nacken has like happened to me i was a little sad i went down to the lake/bath place i heard a story saying theres a girl who will sing beutiful and try and get you down in the water. back to my story i heard someone singing and then ran in and sat on a bench instead and then i saw like something plopping it's face up from the water and i looked it disappeared imediately i only saw a plop in the water if you understand what i mean and it came closer and closer i saw it 3 times and then took my bike and whent somewhere else not at the lake and then went home.... this is not a joke you don't have to believe it....
Näcken is mostly a story to teach kids to not play near bodies of water where they can fall in, injure themselves and/or drown. I remember being told the story when I was a child, and I mainly think my parents taught me the story because we lived very deep in nature with many creeks, marshlands and other bodies of water nearby.
Jag tror att några av dessa är kända och legender i andra länder oxå, som typ Kraken som många sjömän nämnt världen runt i århundraden. Och några har jag aldrig hört talas om.
This is so fun and interesting just to watch this as a Swedish girl and knowing some and some where legends that I never heard before, I really love these kind of videos thank you 💕
