_Jabberjaw_ and _Josie and the Pussycats_ were some of my favorite boomerang classics. And even though they had similar premises to _Scooby Doo,_ were they really rip offs if Hanna-Barbera were doing it to themselves?
Actually, Josie and the Pussycats, JabberJaw, The Funky Phantom, Speed-Buggy, Captain Caveman & The Teen Angels, Hong Kong Phooey, Goober & The Ghost Chasers, Butch Cassidey & The Sundance Kids, and Dynomutt Dog Wonder did team up with Scooby-Doo and Mystery Inc. before in issure #50 of a Scooby-Doo Comic Book in 2001 called "Big House Brouhaha", The New Scooby-Doo Movies, Laff-a-Lympics, an episode of Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. called "Mystery Solvers Club State Finals", Scooby-Doo Team Up, Scooby-Doo & Guess Who and SCOOB!, so your question was answered already!
Stay with me here… It seems like Hanna-Barbera never quite knew what they wanted to do with Captain Caveman. In the 70s he initiated as a “real“ caveman (I guess) with the Teen Angels; then in the early 80s, he appeared on the Flintstone Comedy Show where instead of being a real caveman, Captain Caveman was the superhero alter ego of a guy name Chester who worked at a news station called Cave Central with Wilma Flintstone and Betty Rubble (and since when did Wilma and Betty have jobs?). Finally (and in my favorite incarnation), in the late 80s, he was added to the Flintstone Kids in a segment called Captain Caveman and Son.
Side note about the Flintstone Kids, though… I don’t remember where I read this, but there was a user who wrote something on a website that I had never thought about before then. It was something along the lines of: “Based on evidence from the original series, the Flintstone Kids shouldn’t have been possible, as it has been established that all the characters did not know each other at this age. Fred and Barney would not meet Wilma and Betty until they were at least out of high school. They also not know Dino at this time, as they adopted him in the episode the Snorkasaurus Hunter from the parent series.” All of those things are true, but that’s the kind of trouble you run into when you do “kid“ versions of cartoons.
I'm surprised Dead End Paranormal Park isn't on the list. It has some elements from Scooby Doo, talking dog, boy and his dog relations, mystery solving, supernatural, the nerdy girl, etc.
I remember all of these shows. Most of the I watched in first run on Saturday mornings, while a few others I watched in syndication. Speed Buggy was one of the few to be shown on all three TV networks. I discovered The Funky Phantom, The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids in syndication, while the rest on first run Saturday mornings. Still, many great childhood memories. You did forget a few, which could've been "honorable mentions", such as the aforementioned "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids", "Goober and the Ghost Chasers", (which had the Partridge Family kids, Laurie, Danny, Chris and Tracy guest star on half of the episodes assisting them, alongside their dog Goober, on mysetries for their magazine and also guest starrred Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Gray, best known as Billy Batson on Shazam!), CB Bears, Buford and the Galloping Ghost, Wonderwheels (part of the Skatebirds show), the live action Wonderbug (part of the Krofft Supershow) and last but not least, though it aired in the early to mid 1980's, I feel it also counts, which is "Shirt Tales", which followed the same theme as "Scooby Doo" but only featured small animals with super hero type alter egos. Later on, Captain Caveman would become part of a couple of Saturday morning Flintstones spin-off shows, such as "The Flintstones Comedy Show" (NBC) and "The Flinstone Kids" (ABC). I also subscribed and also, signed up for new notifications. Thanks for uploading.
I LOVE SPEED BUGGY AND JABBERJAW!!!!!!! These old Hannah barbara shows were the BEST!!!!!!!!!! Old boomerang was something special! Johnny quest, he man, thunder cats, jetsons, and the flinstones, we’re some greats to names a few
Scooby doo and dynomutt will always be good. I made sure to get the series so I could have 2/3rds of the scooby doo show from 1976 to 1978 in my scooby doo dvd collection.
So, its kind of like Hanna-Barbera's trying to rip off their own shows without trying to or something, since they technically own the rights to these Shows
I often theorized that one of the many reasons why they made cartoons that copycatted Scooby Doo is because the Scooby Doo franchise made the concept of mystery solving teenagers with a talking animal so popular that they thought that they may as well use it to make other shows. I mean I know the main reason was because of the money but still.
Actually it is. Parents were complaining that cartoons were too violent. So Hanna Barbera made Scooby Doo in response. So it was a combination of both money and to satisfy parents who grew up enjoying stuff like Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry. Where people shot at each other with guns on a regular basis.
0:00, INTRO 0:36, Super Friends 1:39, Fang Face (and somehow, THIS SHOW STILL DIDN'T GET A DVD RELEASE FOR NO REASON!) 2:37, Clue Club 3:45, The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan 4:47, Dynomutt Dog Wonder (and I still 5:29 love SCOOB! no matter what) 5:41, The Funky Phantom 6:45, Speed-Buggy 7:49, JabberJaw 8:49, Captain Caveman and The Teen Angels 10:08, Josie and The Pussycats >And technically, it started out as an Archie Comic Book series from the early 1960s before it was later adapted into two TV Shows by Hanna-Barbera, followed by the 2001 Movie, a Comic Book Revival and a different version of Josie and The Pussycats in The CW's Riverdale
Anyone remember that Cartoon Network music video about Jabberjaw? They flat out compared themselves to Mystery Inc in the opening verse in one of the most clever word plays I’ve ever heard in a song. Me and my friends get no respect/ What does Scooby Doo that we neglect
The studio, even acknowledges the inspiration they had from Scooby Doo for these cartoons when they had the big crossover episode in mystery Incorporated, where characters like speed buggy, and the funky Phantom, hope Scooby Doo solve the mystery without the teenagers around. I literally just saw that episode yesterday, and it is such a fun one to see all these characters from different arrows come together to solve a mystery.
I definitely agree. The top 2 is spot on even though i think you could've put Clue Club a little higher since it had a creepyer tone to it compared to the others. Josie and the Pussycats is definitely my favorite because like you mentioned the characters were more likeable - with my favorites being Melody & Alexandra. The Funky Phantom and Fangface were weird ones...
Honestly when it came to Hanna-Barbara I would call shows like this scooby-dooians shows like Huckleberry Hound, Snagglepuss, QuickDraw McGraw, Magilla Gorilla, and Wally Gator Yogi Bearians, and shows like the Jetsons and the Roman holidays as Flintstonians.
Josie, Jabber Jaws, Captain Caveman and Speed Buggy had crossovers with Scooby Doo as well. I would not say they ripped off of Scooby Doo, but they were more like expanded out of Scooby Doo.
Thing about Scooby-Doo ripoffs - Hanna Barbera made most of them! Jabberjaw was the worst: A clone of the Scooby cast, and their talking creature was part Scooby, part Rodney Dangerfield, part Curly Howard. Originality was NEVER a priority at H-B, and you couldn't exactly sue yourself. But then Scooby-Doo started as a steal on Dobie Gillis and adding a dog anyway (Shaggy was Maynard G Krebs, Fred was Dobie Gillis, Velma was Zelda Gilroy, and Daphne was originally Thalia Menniger, but was pretty much any of Dobie's unattainable girls).
And some people mistakenly though they ripped off Archie because they forgot that both Archie and Dobie used the same high school kid format several comics, movies, books and radio shows used in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. Even Josie and the Pussycats comics in its first format (when it was named "Josie"), though with a twist. It "mixed" characters. Sure Alan is an obvious Archie/Dobie clone, and another predecessor to Fred, and her early series friend Pepper was a Zelda/Velma type, but most of the other characters were hybrids including Josie herself. Josie was a mix of Betty and Veronica/Thalia/Daphne. Josie previous boyfriend, Alan's predecessor Albert (she went from one Al to another) was a mix of Archie/Dobie/Fred and Jughead/Maynard/Shaggy. Even Alexander was what happens when you mix the "Jughead" type with the "Reggie/Dobie's rivials" type, with his twin sister being a female version mixed with Veronica (and for a brief while in the comics Sabrina The Teenaged Witch). I think even Valerie's personality is suppose to be a mix of the "Betty" type, the "Velma" type, with a dash of the "Josie mix" type.
As a kid I never realized how terrible the voice acting was in many of these "clone" shows. To save money, they had the same voice actor playing three parts with the exact same voice and adults--more often women--portraying the voices of children by raising the pitch of their voices only _slightly._ Many early cartoons did well but others were cringe worthy.
I’ve watched and liked “Fangface”, “Dynomutt, Dog Wonder”, and “Jabberjaw” before I discovered their premises were similar to Scooby-Doo. I liked Fangface for the fact that the main character could transform into a werewolf. For Dynomutt, Dog Wonder, the fact it starred crimefighting duo that faces a variety of supervillains. Finally, I liked Jabberjaw for the fact that it starred air-breathing, Brooklyn-accented, Curly Howard voiced, Great White Shark. Plus, the fact the each of the main characters are voiced by the voices of Fred Jones and Scooby-Doo himself, Frank Welker.
I always thought Jabberjaw was a caricature of Rodney Dangerfield rather than Curly Howard. But one interesting thing about that show is that it seemed like it focused more on the women than the men, as they rarely even said the men’s names (the one who resembled Shaggy was called Clamhead; and the other guy’s name was Biff, I think).
@@COMPFUNK2 Jabberjaw’s voice is that of an impression of Curly Howard due to the similar high-pitched voice and the fact says “nyuk-nyuk-nyuk!” and “woo-woo-woo!” like Curly, while Jabberjaw does usually say Rodney Dangerfield’s catchphrase “I don’t get no respect.”, he would even shorten it by just simply saying “No respect.”
I don’t care if they were ripoffs! I grew up watching every single one of those 10 cartoons! Scooby Doo will forever be my favorite cartoon of all time, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the other shows as well!
Okay speedbuggy Jabberjaw and Josie and the Pussycats were my favorites from Hanna-Barbera yes I know they ripped off the original Scooby-Doo series but I liked it it was actually pretty fun seeing them and what you thought it's boomerang the sister Channel literally Cartoon Network so of course they're going to add this these shows to their panel but not that long
My favorite one are, Speed Boggy, Josie and the Pussycats, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angles as well JabberJaw was another great I love and injoy these guys. Plus I got there #Funko figures. I love them ✊👍
#10: Super Friends (1973-1986) #9: Fangface (1978-1979) #8: Clue Club (1976) #7: The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan (1972) #6: Dynomutt, Dog Wonder (1976-1977) #5: The Funky Phantom (1972-1973) #4: Speed Buggy (1973) #3: Jabberjaw (1976) #2: Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels (1977-1980) #1: Josie and the Pussycats (1970-1972)
You forgot to add The Buford Files (1978), The Galloping Ghost (1978), Casper and the Angels (1979), and The New Shmoo (1979) to the list of shows that rip-offed Scooby-Doo.
@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941 Yes, indirectly. It was a mix for Casper the Friendly Ghost, Yogi, and Captain Caveman and the Teenangels. And since CC and the T was a Scooby clone then so was this.
I remember Gobber and the Ghost Chasers. It was almost a carbon copy of Scooby do. as well as a live-action version of Speed Buggy called WonderBug. Comic book cartoons were always my favorite growing up in the 60s and 70s
What's funny voice cast wise most of the shows either had Frank Welker Casey Kasem or Don Messick as part of the main cast. All 3 were part of the Scooby cast members. Recurring cast members Janet Waldo or John Stephenson Or Scooby guest star Mel Blanc.
X-Files was a ripoff of Scooby Doo. Mystery hunters with one of them being a skeptic (like Velma in the old series). Trivial factoid: Jodie Foster did the voice of one of the kids in the Amazing Chan cartoon. Seriously.
This was my world as a kid in the 1970s, rip off or not I loved these shows, still do, one you overlooked was Goober and the Ghost Chasers, another favorite of mine, as we as Inch High Private Eye, Hong Kong Phooey., I could go on and on. Man, I miss this stuff.
Scooby-Doo is such a wonderful series and of course if you see something like that get popular with kids then you’re going to try to imitate them! It’s too bad though that we never got a show with a mystery solving cat! Think of the insane rivalry if Scooby had a cat competitor! It would be wild! Jabberjaw was a really fun series though and had a super catchy music video!
Pretty funny shows😁 Dynomutt and Falcon were in Scooby-Doo Mysteries Incorparated . It's awesome show too😁 Jabberjaw,Buggy,Fantom were also there. Pretty loveable Scooby-Doo clones. Wish they make more of these. Kids today don't what they're missing. It's all violence, sex, drugs,Bacugan(no offense, really). This were much happier, nicer time. You could walk normaly with friends after school, listen to music. Music, movies. I was born in 1985. Much more innocent times. We children didn't feel problems, what was happening. We had great tv shows too. Sorry if I'm writting so much, it's nostalgia. Really good times :) Family, friends, and all I mentioned. Great video😊
I LOVED "The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan" when I caught it on Boomerang in the 2010s. It was simple and basic as hell, but the kids were a lot of fun and Keye Luke played the role of Chan brilliantly.
True..in the 80's cartoons there was always some kind of animal sidekick (Punky Bruster, Dungeons and Dragons, etc. )and almost always some kind of music/band element in the intro if not in the series.
I never realized Superfriends was a rip off of Scooby Doo but some of the others yeah especially Josie and the Pussycats see as how Casey Kasem voiced Alexander Cabot
I watched that whole list!!!! My favorite was Josie & The Pussycats!!!!! I loved Scooby Doo also!!! What would Saturday morning be without sugary cereal and cartoons🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️😂😂😂
Yeah but seeing they were mostly Hanna Barbera cartoons, i see it as an extended universe kinda like the MCU is now.....but they were all awesome BUT YOU FORGOT CARTOON NETWORKS MIKE TYSON MYSTERIES LOL 😂
I don't grow up remember watching any of these shows on TV or on the DVDs like Super Friends and Fangface and Clue Club and The Amazing Chan And The Chan Clan and Dynomutt, Dog Wonder and The Funky Phantom and Speed Buggy and Jabberjaw and Captain Caveman And The Teen Angels and Josie And The Pussycats
How come Scooby and the gang only meet Speed Buggy and Josie in their series: The New Scooby-Doo Movies? IMHO, I think it would have been hilarious if The Funky Phantom appeared in one of them; just imagine how many times Scooby and Shaggy would've gotten scared of said Phantom when trying to solve a mystery.
Ever since Scooby-Doo originated in 1969, Frank Welker still voices Fred Jones. BTW, did anyone ever notice that in Scooby-Doo Where Are You, there was no hyphen in “Scooby Doo”?
I saw all of these on Boomerang, plus many more clones. Even Frogger from the Sateday Supercade is under that umbrella. (Someone needs to make that anthology available to the public!) Call it cloaning, insperation, or ripping off; with similarities flooding every corner of media, if you're gonna imitate something (not plagerize), put some heart in it, and do it well. We've come a LONG way since animation's dark age.
