I read that when he gave Peter and Gordon, World Without Love, the song was incomplete. They asked Paul to finish it and after a while, he did. Paul is a musical genius and I am so glad he's still around.
I heard that, too. Paul went into another room and wrote the bridge (I awake and in a while, I can see my true love smile, she may come I know not when ...) in just a few minutes, saying "here ya go, done."
Bad finger weren’t too shabby as songwriters themselves notably writing “Baby blue” used in Breaking Bad and “Without You” which was a hit for Nilsson and later Mariah Carey
My favorite part about "World Without Love" was how John relentlessly made fun of it. "Please, lock me away..." "OK, right then, if you insist. Song over."
Paul is *the ultimate* musician: huge vocal range and man of a thousand voices, extremely versatile songwriter (for himself and others), good producer (for himself and others), multi-instrumentalist, bandleader but also great collaborator, session man, commercially very successful, amazing longevity, good live gigs, prolific (and also painter, actor, voice actor, screenwriter, director, writer, poet, photographer, music teacher, businessman). *Try to beat that. Try.*
Of course he is the greatest songwriter of all time - he has written/co-written over FIFTY Number Ones !!! He has been a mega-success for SIXTY years. There is no-one comparable.
Erving Berlin? Paul would say it was Berlin or Rogers and Hammerstein. Their work was also miraculous. In an interview once Paul said their writing credit Lennon-McCartney was inspired by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
"Goodbye" really shocked me. I remember constantly hearing that song on the radio when I was a kid, and would have NEVER guessed it to be one of Paul's creations!
Paul also produced Mary’s biggest hit Those Were The Days, and her album Postcard. I don’t think Mary liked some of the songs she recorded (eg Temma Harbour), and she became a more reclusive performer, like unexpectedly providing backing vocals on David Bowie’s track Sound And Vision.
UK number ones as a soloist, in a duo with Stevie Wonder, in a trio with Linda and Denny as Wings, in a foursome in the Beatles and a five piece in get back where Billy Preston is credited.
I'm going to his concert in Newcastle NSW on the 24th of September. Couldn't let the opportunity go to see an absolute legend live for the first and last time.
@jasonhazy5412 not true. Ram and Band on the Run were fantastic albums. McCartney was a good album as was McCartney 2. Singles like Maybe I'm Amazed, Back Seat of my Car, Just Another Day, Live and Let Die, Junior's Farm, Mull of Kintyre, etc... we're excellent.
"On the wings of a nightingale" by the Everly Brothers (1984). Paul's original demo is pop perfection. And I'd love to hear his version of "Songbird in a cage"". In this video, there's obviously a mix-up between 'I'll keep you satisfied" and "I call your name" (both mostly Lennon songs anyway). One big omission, at the very least: "Step inside love" by Cilla Black. "Giddy" is not half-bad either (by Roger Daltrey)...
Yep, loved Step Inside Love. We included it in a recent McCartney tribute played by Sydney musicians. Really nice song with its jazzy chords and soaring chorus.
Lets not get carried away, huh j? Theres a HUGE difference between writing a pop song and what Mozart wrote, ditto for Beethoven and so many others. PAUL would tell you this I'm sure. Writing basic 4-part harmony for a symphony orchestra and writing for a pop band, well, if one piece of McCartneys music brings you to a state of bliss then who am I to say whose music is 'better', thats subjective. I'm just saying that the complexity of writing for one as to th3 other isn't really comparable. Just the variety of instruments alone, the transposition etc., we're talking the equivalent of mathematical genius. I studied 4 part writing in collage and played pop music with bands. I'm a huge Beatles fan too, since seeing them on Ed Sullivan ifn February of '64 so I'm not biased or a classical 'snob', it is just what it is though. Bicycles and motorcycles, row boats and ships and so on, either will get you were you wanna go, either can be exciting, Anyhow, not meant to be critical of your comment.
Amazing...The only thing keeping a song written by Paul McCartney from reaching number 1 was a song written by Paul McCartney. Artists have spent their whole careers trying to even chart and Paul and the Beatles made it seem effortless.
For Lennon and McCartney it was effortless! They literally wrote "I Wanna Be Your Man" when they were out with the Stones at a club having a few pints. After discussing a few song ideas, L&M went to a table, sat down, and wrote the song in about 15 minutes. They came back and handed it to Jagger. The Stones couldn't believe it!
@@brettwheeler7753 They also wrote "A Hard Day's Night" in a hotel room one evening. After their upcoming movie title had been given that title, the producers asked them to write a song with that title.
There are 4 songs i know that john wrote for others Fourmost : Hello Little Girl Fourmost : I'm In Love Billy J Kramer : Bad To Me Billy J Kramer : I Call Your Name Now paul wrote a lot for others some for friends or colleagues Billy J Kramer : I'll Be On My Way Billy J Kramer : I'll Keep You Satisfied Billy J Kramer : From A Window Tommy Quickly : Tip Of My Tongue Mike Sheridan & The Strangers : One And One Is Two The Applejacks : Like Dreamers Do (Best Version) Cilla Black : Love Of The Loved Cilla Black : It's For You Cilla Black : Step Inside Love Peter & Gordon : A World Without Love Peter & Gordon : I Don't Want To See You Again Peter & Gordon : Nobody I Know Peter & Gordon : Woman P J Proby : That Means A Lot Carlos Mendes : Penina Mary Hopkin : Goodbye Peggy Lee : Let's Love Rod Stewart : Mine For Me Badfinger : Come And Get It Ringo Starr : Six O'clock Ringo Starr : Pure Gold Everly Brothers : On The Wings Of A Nightingale Billy J Kramer : Do You Want To Know A Secret (Maybe 50/50) Rolling Stones : I Wanna Be Your Man (Maybe 50/50)
The Beatles themselves also recorded "I Wanna Be Your Man" for their With The Beatles album. And you know the reason why Peter & Gordon was able to record those unused John Lennon/Paul McCartney compositions was because Peter's younger sister Jane was dating Paul at the time.
Yes, Paul McCartney is a fantastic songwriter. I also heard he wrote the song downtown. I can tell by the way some of these songs sounded they were written by the Beatles or by Paul McCartney. You can hear it in the music. Don’t mind me I’ve been a solo instrumental guitarist for almost 50 years. I pick up on things like this. All except I can say is Paul McCartney is one hell of a musician and one hell of a songwriter I love the Beatles and I still do to this day hats off to you, Paul you’re a beautiful soul I love your music..👍🏼👍🏼😁😁❤️🎸😎
Completely agree. There isn't one piece featured here that surprised me, except 'Wanna Be Your Man'. Every one of them sounds like a piece by McCartney/Beatles -- including 'Veronica' and 'Songbird in a Cage', so you can't mark it up to 'that British Invasion sound' or some such nonsense. And same here -- I've been playing stringed instruments of all types for -- well, for over 50 years actually, but I only started getting serious about them about 50 years ago. ha ha
The Mamas and Papas had a great tune ‘I call your name’ which I was surprised to discover was a Lennon/McCartney original as it didn’t appear on any of their studio albums. They were seriously knocking out songs at that time, phenomenal work rate and output.
Costello wrote "Veeronica" about his grandmother whose confirmation name was Veronica. Not sure what McCartney did on the song but it was mostly written by Elvis.@@totalbiscuit4758
As a 67-year-old who, like so many other peers, learned guitar to play Beatle songs after hearing them on Sullivan in 1964, I was long aware McCartney was directly responsible for Badfinger [EDIT: I was wrong on this detail; see STICKMAN 1742's correction of me below] and for "Come And Get It", but was somehow unaware until this past year that Paul did a finished demo. When I first heard it about six months ago, I instantly liked it better than Badfinger's version, despite Badfinger's imitating McCartney's, including following his production instructions when they recorded their version.
@@joesantus1663 He was not responsible for Badfinger. They were a very talented new band that signed with Apple. McCartney was responsible for Come And Get It and gave them that hit song. Badfinger then went on to write better songs of their own and it was George Harrison that produced those albums for Apple.
@@stickman1742 Thanks for correcting me. Seems I have still been ignorant or misinformed about important points of Badfinger's history and the origin of "Come And Get It".
In all the '70s fanzines there was always the story of how they were signed to Apple all the Beatles input on the songs and new band name. As a little kid I didn't know about the whole demo method of getting a song to a band. I never heard it until the third Anthology album. Sounds album-ready.@@joesantus1663
What about STEP INSIDE LOVE ?.....Sung by CILLA BLACK ....As a KID that MESMERIZED me. Especially the Chorus & the build to it. .....I only found out that Paul wrote that song YEARS after its release. I loved that song so much that as a musician myself I even recorded my own 16 track instrumental version of it about 8 years ago......Personally I feel that Paul might be the GREATEST SONGWRITER who has EVER LIVED .
Yes I would of thought that was the most well known song not directly credited to the Beatles or McCartney. Song would of been familiar to British,Australian and NZ audiences where Cilla Black was very well known.
I saw Badfinger in the early 70's at a free concert at college and when the introduced Come And Get It they just said "here's a song Paulie wrote for us".
I was expecting "Girlfriend" to be on this list, for Michael Jackson's 1979 Off the Wall LP. Ahead of collaborations "The Girl is Mine" and "Say Say Say"
He was only facing bad press for soppy songs like My Love, Silly Love Songs, With A Little Luck - too bad because there was great stuff on his albums (and "Junior's Farm" was fantastic)
He had always been treated bad after the beatles brok up ! Specially fans blaming him for beatles breaking up and also Yoko attacking him in the media because John was Jealous Paul was more successful if you look back you will see it. Specially Lennon fans attacking him that’s the story. Floppy songs Wtf then you haven’t really heard Mccartney
Everyone should have this kind of friendship , but Paul McCartney and John Lennon had a special relationship that we can share our feelings and hope that each of us can find someone special to share our live with and we can be happy 😊.
@@dansmithwave Pete Ham left this world in 1975. He quit Apple Records in 1972, so I don't think he had such a close relationship with the Beatles at the end of his life.
The early Beatles' albums were dominated by John Lennon songs because Paul was giving away so many songs to others (four to Peter & Gordon - his girlfriend's brother Peter Asher). Of the 25 songs the Beatles gave away only about 4 or 5 were Lennon songs (or predominately Lennon songs).
With his career ended with the Beatles he continues to show his talent as a solo, then with Wings. He did much experimentation which showcases songs like Monkberry Moon Delight. Fun stuff off the Ram album.
I would include My Dark Hour co-written and credited to Steve Miller. It started as a chance for Miller to meet the Beatles while he was in GB. Eventually the others left and It was Paul who suggested "do you want to write a song". Paul ended up playing bass, guitar & drums and doing background vocals, while Steve played guitars and sang lead. It was on the Steve Miller Band album Brave New World in '69. I don't have any confirmation but, the vocal on the lyric "Son, you better stay in bed" sounds very Paul-like.
Yes. I like "My Dark Hour," with Paul and Steve Miller. I learned Paul co-created it with Steve Miller when Paul was going through a dark hour: The Beatles' financial management mess and manager abuse conflict between the sleazy Alan Klein, who the other Beatles wanted, esp John, and Paul's Linda's Dad, Mr Eastman, who would have been much better. Years later John apologized to Paul admitting Alan Klein was really a sleazy thief.
Like Dreamers Do is one of the main reasons The Beatles were signed up by EMI, who wanted to get them on a deal that would include the publishing for that song through their publishing division Ardmore and Beechwood.
Why is the voice-over talking about the Dakotas song "I'll call your name" (mainly written by Lennon), while the clip is showing and playing the Dakotas song "I'll keep you satisfied", written mainly by McCartney?
@JeansWebbTv I was wondering the same thing and scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else had brought it up. I am not aware of any Beatles recording of "I'll Keep You Satisfied" (probably because no such recording exists.)
Yes...I know Sincé 1990 (even in both the songs "six o'clock" and "come and get it"...the tone of Paul McCartney's voice is heard in the choruses !!! , as well as in Donnovan's song "Mellow Yellow") . I'am a Mexican Fan of The Beatles and PAUL's single , now...I have 51 years old and we preying for the next Got Back concert here in México City !!! 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽 (PS today September 15th & 16th are...Own Independence Day Celebration !!!)
I knew Come And Get It would be #1. I was 11 years old and had been a HUGE Beatles fan for several years (we listened to music a lot back then because there were just a few TV channels...LOL). Became an instant Badfinger fan and bought all their records.
Come and get it was a hit down here in Australia too, i was only young at the stage but absolutely loved it, didn't know that Paul wrote it until about 5 years ago when i watched a doco about Pete Ham, in an interesting twist Pete wrote Without You which was a major hit for Harry Nillson Schmillson...
McCartney is the best pop songwriter of all time. Bob Dylan was better with lyrics (hence his Nobel prize for literature) and John Lennon was just below both. They are my one two and three.
also as two records not that long ago with the vocalist of the band who plays "love like blood" also "europa",can´t remenber the name now, KILLING JOKE!
they were released as a very limited edition ,i´m at work or i would send you the name and years of release maybe in sites of 2nd hand records they are available
The Beatles never did a version of 'I'll Keep You Satisfied', lol. Who told you it appeared on two of their studio albums? 😂 And since when did they do an album called 'Long Tall Sally'? That was an EP - and this song was not on it 🤣
I suspect the writer(s) of the video were getting "I'll Keep You Satisfied" mixed up with "I Call Your Name," which is the song the Beatles decided to record themselves after having given it to Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas and not being impressed with their version. But keep at it, WatchMojoUK.
@@PartTimeBuddhist Fair enough, good Sir. I am abashed by your level-headed response. And I'm with the Beatles on that - their version of 'I Call Your Name' is far superior to the Dakotas'.
The Beatles also played a role in getting the Stones their first record contract. The ran into an A&R man for Decca records at a club, and suggested he see the Stones playing in London. And there are several pictures on the internet showing Paul and Linda in the Stones’ dressing room before a concert in NYC (circa 1978-79)

you've got to be kidding, right? every single human past the age of 10 who was alive at the time knew Macca wrote 'Come and Get It', and also knew that Lennon & McCartney not only gave the Stones 'I Wanna Be Your Man', but actually showed Mick & Keith how to write a hook!
the first time i heard "woman", i knew paul wrote it. a song that good could not have been written by any mere mortal. peter asher was the brother of paul's girlfriend jane asher. "goodbye" has paul all over it. the only ones i didn't know were songs i hadn't heard.
"Goodbye" and "Woman" are among my favorite McCartney tunes... Elton John, Billy Joel, Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, and Stevie Wonder are also excellent singer-songwriters that have dozens of hits apiece - but NOBODY tops McCartney as far as I'm concerned!
One fact wrong: it states the only non-Beatles #1 Lennon-McCartney song in America was World Without Love. However, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds was #1 for Elton John in America. Also, #1 on the country charts in the USA was I Don't Want to Spoil the Party by Rosanne Cash.
One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video about 'Like Dreamers Do' was that it was covered by 'The Applejacks' in 1964 on Decca Records, reaching No.20 in the UK charts. Decca was the company who had previously turned the song and The Beatles down after their audition on New Year's Day 1962. 'Like Dreamers Do' was The Applejacks follow up to their biggest hit 'Tell Me When' which was a top 10 hit also in 1964.
So, A World Without Love was written when Paul was 16. It's such a sad song, it's apparent he was still mourning his mother who died two years before. It could also be said of Yesterday.
These songs are primarily from the 60s and 70s. People under a certain age are highly unlikely to seek out albums from this period and "Read credits" without some prior motivation, eg they've watched this video. You sound like someone who thinks things were better "in the old days" and resents music streaming. Grow up.
A fact mentioned earlier here about Peter and Gordon, the pop duo for whom McCartney wrote songs which included their one big hit ‘A World Without Love’ that McCartney reputedly wrote when he was only 16 years old is that Peter Asher is the younger brother of once actress Jane Asher who dated Paul McCartney around that time. But it has always annoyed Jane whenever her relationship with McCartney is mentioned after meeting satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe with whom she has a daughter and two sons.
As it’s rumored that Paul was replaced by chap called Billy Sheares after being killed in a car accident hence why the relationship with Jane ended because she was not dating the real Paul but an imposter.
There are many "legends" of rock and pop, but Paul will remain the ultimate highlight. Even John, Mick, Sting or others have not had such a definitive impact on the history of popular culture !...
The Beatles as a whole had a massive influence on popular culture, but they were only a part of it. Being the most upfront, outspoken member of that group, it was clearly John Lennon who had the definitive impact on the history of popular culture!
Just yesterday I was watching some music videos and came across Peter and Gordon's "A world without love" and the end of the chorus "...without love" sounded so McCartneyish to me that i was mean like "oh, those rock n roll bands those days had to mime the Beatles in everything to try to be on the charts" but I had no idea it was a Paul's song ahahah one day later I bit my tongue and happy to know my beatle ear is working
Paul had been an ex-Beatle for almost 20 yrs when he co-wrote the lovely (Imo)song “Veronica” w/Elvis Costello (I have had several relatives who suffered from Alzheimer’s /Dementia) who had a successful career w/his band Wings & then an active solo career 👍
Love Paul and all The Beatles, always will feel individual products should have been as well as the Beatles music. The music we have enjoyed has been amazing. Thank you, Sir Paul, Ringo, George and John.
SONGS PENNED BY PAUL MCCARTNEY : (10) "VERONICA" : ELVIS COSTELLO (9) "SIX O'CLOCK" : RINGO STARR (8) "I WANNA BE YOUR MAN" : ROLLING STONES (7) "SONGBIRD IN A CAGE" : CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG (6) "I'LL KEEP YOU SATISFIED" : BILLY J. KRAMER AND THE DAKOTAS (5) "WOMAN" : PETER AND GORDON (4) " A WORLD WITHOUT LOVE" : PETER AND GORDON (3) "GOODBYE" : MARY HOPKIN (2) "LIKE DREAMERS DO" : BEATLES (1) "COME AND GET IT" : BADFINGER
I actually new McCartney co-wrote I wanna be your man. It's on their second album With the Beatles and Ringo sings the lead with John and Paul singing Back up.
And of course McCartney's main love interest during the 60s was Jane Asher, Peter's sister. That may have been a factor in his 'giving' those two songs to Peter and Gordon.
You missed a big one: Oh woman, oh why... which he won an award for but never performed it in a concert - ever. Not performed by anyone else in a concert either. Very intense and different style. Also one of my favorites.
I’m confused. I’ll Keep You Satisfied or I Call Your Name? You seem to be talking about the latter but showing the former. The Beatles never released a song called I’ll Keep You Satisfied.
When I remastered the LP Version of Ringo, I made sure it was in true stereo. with 100% separation. All tracks are the original and kept in the same way the tracks would have been heard, if you would have a Phonograph - from the 60s/70's.
It's a song which showcases his ability to absorb and re-imagine any number of musical styles - in this case, it's a composition which Burt Bacharach would have been happy to put his name to.
Oh, Wow, That Paul McC is such a talented fellow..........Years and years of giving us great songs......Thank You Paul Dear......🤣😆Still writing I'm sure.....❤❤❤✌✌
Live and Let Die is a typical McCartney post-Beatles bodge. "In which we live in..."? Come on, Macca. Anybody can do better than that. Even Wings.@@baritony8763
@@scottandrewbrass1931 well you've right in one way George Martin did have to get McCartney to write the song "Love in the open air" (i think he actually stood at the side of McCartney at the side of the piano in McCartneys home as he wore it!) when I said wrote the music I didn't mean also the incidental music in the film, but however the song came about McCartney DID write the song and he did write the two TV themes.
At an age when I was still just a doofus and barely had a life, Paul was writing incredible relationship songs like “For No One” and “Yesterday.” Just incredible.
I think everybody knew Paul wrote "A Word Without Love" and "Come and Get it", one the other hand I never heard of "Songbird In a Cage" or the artist who recorded it.
Imagine being so prolific at songwriting that you can actually rank them. The sheer number of songs he gave away easily outnumber the total output of the majority of songwriters.
How can a person be one of the G.O.A.Ts? It literally means Greatest Of All Time. Singular. He can be one of the greatest, (& I think he is), but not one of the goats.
I think a lot of people don't know that although McCartney was the Bass player for the Beatles he played several instruments, The song Coming Up was all McCartney on 14 different instruments and John Lennon was asked on a talk show once if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, he replied he's not even the best drummer in the Beatles.
@@dakota51tpa2001 Oh yeah, John could be a prick, I think he had a lot of guilt so he lashed out to make others look bad. The remark about Ringo was to say that Paul was a better drummer. Maybe to start a rift between Paul and Ringo.
Lennon never said that on any chat show ever. It's a bit of a cliche that gets trotted out time and time again by people who simply don't have a clue what they are talking about. The supposed quote about Ringo not even being the best drummer in The Beatles was in fact from a BBC radio 4 sketch show called Radio Active then ripped off a few years later by Jasper Carrot on his television series Carrots Confidential. Google it.
@@scottandrewbrass1931 I didn't say Paul was better, I said Lennon insinuated it, to be honest, I have no idea if one is better than the other. As far as Paul being hopeless, I'm afraid I have to disagree with that. Ringo's style is unique, to compare the two is like comparing apples to oranges.
