I used to work as a domestic help for a retired consultant neurosurgeon. His home was crammed with hundreds of medical books, antique surgical tools, a real human skeleton and several human skulls. The skeleton was known as George. One of the skulls (we called her Geraldine) had three boreholes drilled through the top and sides. It’s horrific to think that poor Geraldine would have had these holes drilled into her skull while fully conscious in an attempt to cure her of such issues as ‘hysteria’ or post natal depression. Women were diagnosed with hysteria for centuries, a broad spectrum excuse men used for everything from fainting, anxiety, to menstrual issues. Basically any female condition that men could not or would not understand. Whenever I handled George, Geraldine and any of the other skulls, I treated them with all the dignity and respect they deserved, something they would never have received in life.
Need to do one on modern surgical tools mostly the ones that are just modified carpentry tools in stainless . Also the pins and screws used to hold bones together. Would it not be a fun day to go through all of these procedures in one day or so.
Even nowadays though people would rather live with a painful tooth than go to a dentist. Which I don't get at all. If I had to pick which of the regular doctor visits I prefer over the others then I'd pick the dentist.
