It's kind of funny and encouraging watching some of these movies with youngsters, because they're quick to notice and be appalled by a lot of what wouldn't fly with their generation today. That said, I wouldn't want to whitewash any of those films for that very reason, it's good for them to see how far things have come and still to go.

There's still plenty of casual racism and sexism in today's Hollywood, both on screen and off. And it wasn't just "on screen", as in in the stories shown in films. It was much, much worse off-screen! But I agree that it is more remarked about and called out today.
@finland4ever55
@finland4ever55 9 месяцев назад
And it also comes in groups that are considered okay with being discriminated against. The most notable "acceptable target" is Slavs and Eastern Europeans, especially since people, both white non-Slavs and POC, invalidate and encourage it for many reasons: "It's true". "Slavs aren't oppressed because they're white", "Slavic countries are all corrupt look at their governments". Sixteen Candles which was on this list, has a lesser talked about bigotry--- towards Hungarians. A Hungarian-American boy is called a bohunk by Sam's dad. Bohunk is an anti-Hungarian slur.

big problem with not presenting racism, misogyny, homophobia or casual attitudes towards slavery is to act as though they don't/didn't exist and thus show a sugar-coated world. It gets a bit tricky in depictions of the past; in a non-movie context, HAMILTON may deal with a heritage that belongs to all Americans, but customary multi-racial casting obscures the fact that being even slightly the wrong shade of human-brown or having the wrong language as a first one would inspire the heroes of the story to dispossess/kill/enslave you. In AMISTAD, Morgan Freeman plays a completely fictional character to misrepresent the status attainable by African-Americans in the era; it would be dead wrong to US Armed Forces in the era of segregation can't be depicted as all in it together (even in a fantasy like CAPTAIN AMERICA), limiting though this would be on the acting/extra opportunities of non-white actors. Does the unacceptability of black/brow/yellowface means that a white European or American actor will no longer be cast as a South-west Asian, usually a baddie? 'Wrong' casting is occasionally relishable, like the Jewish and/or Gay artistes who played Nazis.

I'm not sure what you mean by the bullshit of today. We should remember when we watch Hollywood films that hundreds of movies were made and we tend to see the cream of the crop. The same will be true of our movies 50 years from now. Individuals make mistakes and behave badly and so do societies. Better to recognize those mistakes and learn from them. I love many old Hollywood movies, but our society is better off with less racism, misogyny, and homophobia. Hopefully someday we will be rid of it entirely. The only ppl who suddenly have a problem with it are conservatives because they hate “men in drag” which is code for “we hate gay ppl.” So I can see the confusion in trying to blame wokeness. But the better question is pink face/ gay face in where straight actors play gay and cis actors play trans.

@ta21l

The Hays Code and MPAA pretty much censored a lot of language. That’s why a lot of old films have creative ways of implying swear words, sexual acts, and foul language. A few words were able to slip such as ass, jackass, and iconically damn in Gone With the Wind which offended a lot of Catholics at the time. The MPAA put a stop to swearing in the early 1930s so right around talkies we’re being the new norm. So that’s why we don’t see a lot of swearing or offensive language in older films until the mid 1960s. It’s not that ppl wear more classy back then, right when talkies started of course they cursed lol. There was nudity in studio movies as well until 1930s. So people who lived 80 years ago should have known better? In future generations, today's movies will be judged and found lacking too. Is it any better to make pictures where women are tough and smart and every man is dumb, evil, or useless? They are common today. Also, many Hispanic actors like Ricardo Montalban, John Seda, and John Leguizamo have portrayed Caucasians. Even Meghan Markle has portrayed Caucasian women (not black women passing as white). Hispanics are a culture, not a race. They come in all colors. My own Puerto Rican wife of 47 years is Spanish, Arab, Black, Native American, and even 3% Chinese. When ignorant people used to ask me what she was (and not all of them were white), I replied, "A woman." Yes, those 10 things were wrong, but we should not be sanctimonious. As for the age gap, I'm glad it isn't as common in today's movies. But many actors and actresses continue to marry much younger people in real life.
@rahbeeuh
@rahbeeuh 9 месяцев назад
Yes they should've known better! Racism, sexism, ageism, classism, prejudice, misogynoir, misogyny, anti-queer, anti-Black, ableism, etc were all wrong in any time period yet it was "justified" by willing participants back in the day. If anything, today's movies are an over overcorrection of past events. Meghan is a white woman as well as a Black woman. Since her skin tone is lighter she could believably play a white woman. The Latino actors you mentioned may have played white characters but that means they have work. If the same thing happens with say Tom Hanks that means an actor from a marginalized group has one less opportunity that could've been theirs. Tom Hanks has plenty of jobs lined up but an actor such as maybe, Jon Seda, may not. Do you see how the two aren't the same?
@ta21l

You are missing the point. If you know US history well enough, you should’ve known racism was a big issue 80 years ago too. There were even activists in all different minority groups. So yeah people did know better but there was a lot of religious Catholics, Christians, white men, and racists in power back then. They had a lot of power to censor anything and show what they think is “appropriate.” That hindered a lot of POC and minorities on how they were portrayed. This video is to not say we should ban these old movies but to comment on how we should move on from those harmful troupes. And dude there are plenty of dumb women characters in movies such as Bridesmaids and dumb men characters such as in Step Brothers. If you have a problem with dumb male characters then complain to Kevin Hart and Adam Sandler whose roles are always dumb. For action movies there needs to be more female characters. I can’t speak on how Hispanics and Latinos identify but by now we all know how they were a race of indigenous ppl before Europeans came and took advantage of them; thus spawning multiple mixed raced societies because of colonialism. Rita Hayworth was of mixed European culture but she was still considered too Spanish or “exotic” aka Latina to play roles. So the studio made her more white passing, erasing her Spanish side. There were a lot of these actors who are Hispanic or Latino back then who changed to look more white. They did that so studios would view them as being more versatile like white actors. I know a lot of Latinos and Hispanics in the US who don’t consider themselves white even if they have European ancestry. They call themselves Latino, Hispanic, Afro Latino, or whatever country they’re from such as Mexican or Brazilian. Lastly you’re just hating on Meghan Markle for obvious racist and sexist reasons but look she didn’t have to hide her white side or her blackness unlike Old Hollywood Hispanic & Latino actors who had to appear more white. Since she’s of mixed race and identify as both she can play white and black characters.

@@ta21l Raquel Welch iirc was also partially Latin but only embraced that side of her when she'd already achieved success as white passing. It's such a shame what Hollywood has done to Black, Indigenous/Native American, Asian, Latin and Hispanic (other POC) actors throughout history. The forced assimilation was awful and while it still kinda happens it's not as bad as it once was. Progress of any kind in Hollywood moves slower than molasses. Anyway you made such good points!

A movie casting all white people is not offensive. A movie casting white people doing black, brown, or yellow face…THAT is offensive.

Casting an all white cast, I wouldn’t say is offensive just not right. As a young black child, when watching old movies, I would ask my older sister “why aren’t there any black people in the movie?”

@@stingrey1571true, diversity is great 👍 However if someone were to make a movie about Vikings from Sweden, it would be historically accurate to have a cast of white actors since pretty much all Vikings were white. You know what I mean? Same thing like if a movie took place in ancient Africa, I would want to cast all black actors. It all depends on the movie’s plot and setting 🤷‍♂️

Yeah. Notice the reaction to monochrome casting in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Filipino, Brazilian, Latino, etc. media is considerably less whined about, or more often, NEVER whined about. But how dare the WEST be monochrome! It's only bad when American, Canadian, European, and Australian media is monoracial for some reason even though discrimination exists everywhere and there are pocket communities of other races everywhere.

Add cis actors playing trans characters. The trickier one is straight actors playing gay characters. I do agree that sexuality and gender shouldn’t matter but we are not there yet. Emphasis on we are not there yet. Studios still prefer straight and cis actors because they think they are more versatile and marketable. Yes there are openly queer actors who play straight but they are usually the ones who can pass as masc (for gays) or femme (for lesbians). Compared to the small amount of LGBTQ roles, (600 LGBTQ roles vs 10,000 straight roles) a lot are still being played by straight actors. Given the fact that studios are still hesitant to green light Queer centric shows and the rise in anti LGBTQ hate crimes and laws, the pink face or gay face needs to stop until it’s a more of an even playing field. Casting agents, producers, and directors needs to do a better job at this.

So if anyone says that they would rather date someone their own age over someone old enough to be their parent, would they be ageist? Or is it ageist to turn down the advances of an adult who knew you while you were still a minor (while they were an adult at the time, by the way)?

Who says smoking is out of films? In "Die Hard" Bruce Willis repeatedly lights up...And he's the good guy. Then age gaps no more. What about the relatively recent 90s movies "Entrapment" and "As Good As It Gets"? As for other points made, relevant indeed. Even the African American indie film "Sweet Sweetback's Baaaadasssss Song" has dated (though briefly seen) portrayals of homosexuals. I still love older movies more more often than not. Just not for these now offensive reasons. Inthe extras to Spike Lee's "Bamboozled" many african american actors who appeared in it said they loved the old movies, just not the race depictions. And i actually would have no objection to disclaimer warnings put before "The Philadelphia Story", "To Catch A Thief", "The Hustler", and other otherwise classic movies of yesteryear featuring women being hit. Not to mention whatever Reagan movie that Michael Moore showed him hitting a woman too after the mention of Reagan's name.
