Once again, powered by Slurpee, the latest top speed safety video to start us off on the soldering series. These are the top 10 things not to do with solder and your soldering iron.
If you think I'm going to fast, just turn on the closed captioning. That should help! Here's also a rundown:
Top 10 Things NOT to do when Soldering:
10) Don't forget to wear pants, or at the very least, underwear.
9) Don't rush
8) Don't forget to unplug your iron when you are done.
7) Don't try soldering with lead free solder first.
6) Don't buy acid flux solder, unless you are a plumber.
5) Don't forget to wash your hands before and after you solder.
4) Don't flick off your solder.
3) Do not solder in a small space.
2) Don't use lead solder on things like jewelry or silverware.
1) Don't forget to put the iron back in the holder.

Number 11, wear eye protection, like goggles. Trust me. I almost learned that the horrible way. Especially when you De-solder a wire from a terminal, sometimes there is tension, even with a clamp, that thing will release and spray hot, liquid solder. And if that sht goes in the eyes..... well you can imagine. So yeah, goggles, seriously!

@@MakerHighSchool No yeah, I was doing some soldering at work yesterday and I was de soldering a wire and it came off and sprayed, and I noticed a drop fly right past my right eye. I was like oh sht......, I should probably have goggles on.

Number 4a. Don't neglect to put water on the sponge. Many, many people are guilty of this. Wiping the soldering iron on a damp sponge is how you keep it clean and keep your soldering iron happy. Steps: solder, wipe tip, re-tin the tip, solder some more. Do not: 1. Just don't freakin bother cleaning it or 2. Flick solder off of the tip. Nice vid

Or, if you're like me, you could opt for the brass wool dry tip cleaner that doesn't need to be wet.

You are soooooo much fun! Watching this video was a good time. I make jewelry and never thought about the lead thing . Very smart, smarty. I'm trying to branch into soldering just for jump rings but I wanted to make sure I'm not gonna like electrocute myself or something. I use to come home from school EVERYDAY, turn on the light while the touching the sink ..zap...so I have to be triple sure. Lol. I feel better. Now burn house down...ahh that's 50 50. This is why I'm not allowed torches. .

Rotfl. I'm only allowed actual fire when I'm cooking. No torches here, either.

I have burn my self multiple times through the wire that I'm soldering because some of those will somehow end up with a bare spot on top of the insulation.

Hah! I've been there before. "Is there too much flux? Not enough? Is my iron too hot? Why wont you work? Arg!" I have some travel folding tables, and I got so frustrated, I didnt realize I was holding my iron tip against the table top. Burned a hole right through it.

Seriously for safety tips they should be read normally, not to mention annoying, didn't mean this to be a negative comment it's just how the video made me feel, very rushed!
@MakerHighSchool
@MakerHighSchool 5 лет назад
Sorry it made you feel that way. I hand subtitle all my videos, so you can turn on closed captions and pause at any time. I tried doing regular paced ones, and lost 90% of the audience in the first minute. With this one, I keep 90% of the audience to at least 60% of the video, and 55% till the very end. I figure better to get the info out to the most people I can. I can't please everyone, but I appreciate that you are trying to give constructive feedback. I dont see it as a negative comment at all. 👍

@MakerHighSchool

It's not everyone's cup of tea. Safety videos are usually pretty boring, so try my best to make them entertaining. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
@neodonkey
@neodonkey 7 лет назад
I for one wouldn't find the content itself boring, and wouldn't even class it as a safety vid, its more instructional. Doesn't have to be delivered totally dry or without any humour either. Channels like Dave Jones of EEVBlog, Fran Blanche, Big Clive are all top examples of what to aim for I think.
@MakerHighSchool
@MakerHighSchool 7 лет назад
+Tripledonkey Those are all great channels! If I did what they did, why wouldn't people just watch those instead? 😉
@neodonkey
@neodonkey 7 лет назад
Not saying copy them, I'm just saying none of those channels, and there are dozens more good ones, resort to the presentation style you chose. Its just my opinion though, you do what float yours boat!
