Joshua, I’ve been listening to you about 6 weeks. I do so daily for inspiration and help on the journey! I feel “deeply”grateful! No hyperbole whatsoever, when I say… this is changing my life in beautiful ways! Yet I do feel both humbled and embarrassed at the same time. So far 22 large bags of cool stuff donated. And masses of coffee table books, CDS and DVDS for our local library. The lady who took in my donations said:” We will save this for our big spring sale which funds our children’s program and their summer reading one.” I felt terrific! Blessings to you and your ongoing work and precious family!🙏❤️🙏

They're often taken suddenly from their homes, with only what they can carry in a plastic bag. And besides plastic bags are used for garbage. It makes them feel like their belongings are perceived as "Trash". So sad!

@Amy Brown As a daughter packing to travel to my recently deceased mom’s place, I can’t applaud this enough! 👏 👏 👏 Our mom went through a couple of rounds of major purging, paring down to (mostly) only items she used regularly or items of great sentimental value. We had all expected to have her around for another 10 - 15 years, but instead she died peacefully in her sleep, quite unexpectedly. It has made an incredible difference to me and my sister that she’d done the bulk of the triage for us. There’s still plenty of work, sorting out what goes to friends/neighbors vs. Goodwill vs. the library, with some stuff just being tossed...but not much, percentage-wise. So far, I’ve found a little less than one storage bin’s worth of items I’m taking home: treasured keepsakes and some photo albums. I do plan to digitize the albums, down the road, but for now I’m avoiding the emotional quicksand. I’ve already begun purging my own things.... 😊 Your heirs will be so grateful for your hard work 💐

When I was a teenager, an old woman I had worked for told me that every time you buy an item, it will stay with you for life, meaning goods keep on accumulating. Only solution is to pass unwanted and unused goods on, sell them, donate them, whatever. We have to make room for the things we NEED & not just to hang on to everything we buy, and for life. I'm quite adept at decluttering and I actually enjoy it. I do a little decluttering daily. What's usable, I donate, what isn't, I bin it for the weekly garbage collection in my wheelie bins. There are 2 w.bins. 1 for recycling - collected every fortnight and the other green w.bin for the weekly collection. If my bins look a little empty, I dig around for useless stuff to fill the bins at least half way up. It works for me.

@@oldcountryman2795 , I disagree when it comes to appliances & tools !!! New appliances brake down very quickly, where as older appliances lasted 30 years or more !!! Best to repair old appliances & save tools ( if they are small ). Things that take up a lot of space, like riding lawn mowers, etc. get rid of if not using ! Keep the best of multiple / duplicate tools ! When we remodeled our bathroom, we kept our old toilet ( can't buy anymore ) & didn't replace.... I'd already had experience with new toilets that clog easily & overflow !!! Instead we don't flush when we pee, and throw the paper in trash next to toilet... which is emptied daily. No overflow problems... and conserving water ( even though our State has no shortage of water... fresh water will be more valuable than oil ( water is a necessity to life of ALL things, us, animals & our food sources !!! )... people who think more about oil are short sighted & don't realize the real necessity's of ALL LIFE & our real survival !!!

A hoarder doesn't realize how much tension they create with their obsession. I understand the mindset of hoarders: Things don't leave. Things aren't mean. Things just sit there, waiting to be needed. But it takes a special therapist to teach the hoarder that Things are just Things. I've lived (edit: LOVED) a hoarder from the moment I met him 18+ years ago. But I haven't lived with him in over 14 of those years. I learned how not to be obsessed with throwing Things away, and I refused to become legally responsible in any way for the decluttering. It works; he had (EDIT: has) a brother who will step up and take care of his Things when it's needed. Love the hoarder, fear and hate the hoarding disorder.

When I moved the last time, the person who was moving out of the apartment I was moving into asked me what furniture I wanted left in there - I ended up keeping only a desk, a chair, a drop leaf table, and the twin bed. When I moved this time, the owners asked me what furniture I wanted left in, and I told them; they took out some of the things I didn't want, but I wish they had more storage space available because there are a couple more large pieces of furniture I would take out if there was just somewhere that they could be stored (in particular, a massive headboard/nightstand combo thing that's designed for a smaller bed than the one that's in the space).

@L. A. McDonough I wish I had less furniture in my new place, but the owners don't have storage space for the couple things I wish weren't in it. The less there is, the less there is to clean (especially dusting), and that's something I miss from my old place.

It's like the closet: crammed with a bunch of cans and bottles of stuff that make me cringe when I open it, with no room to spare. After listening to your video, I went crazy checking and tossing spices with expirations 2 to 5 years expired. Absolutely brand new full cans and bottles too. What a waste! I guess the solution is to say "what if, I just declutter and ignore the What if? 🤔

Between summer 2020 and summer 2021, I got rid of a grand total of 7 (yes, seven!) pieces of luggage of various sizes. I retained 5 assorted valises for myself, which is quite enough. I discarded the 7 by thoroughly tidying up and vacuuming each one and later carrying it, with a note attached on either side, to a nearby very busy bus stop and leaving it there. For every unit, a new and presumably happy owner was found the very same day, in some instances within minutes. I know for sure because a couple of times, I strolled past the same bus stop briefly later and the item was gone, much to my delight. Pieces of luggage which just collected dust in storage, are now useful to someone else. It's a great feeling.

If a fire evacuation or disaster hits and you have to leave your home you will be struggling to find easy storage you can carry. Save luggage with working wheels, especially if you are older or partially disabled, or have recent muscle injuries and can't carry plastic totes. BETTER store important things and documents in one luggage carry on as a grab-N-go ready bag.

She grew up during the Depression, so any "thing" was valuable to her and you never know when you might need it... She told me that one day when I grew up I would have my own house and I could have it the way I wanted it. Which was true. Still...when my mom died at age 96...when we went in to start disposing of all of her collected stuff from not only her possessions, but both of my grandparentsʻ, it was clear that the last time the kitchen had been cleaned out was when I still lived there, before I went to college. She never learned; she never changed; she never tossed anything; she freaked out when anyone else tossed anything that she "might need someday," even if it was yogurt that had expired two years ago. *sigh* One day you wonʻt have to live like this, when you get your own place.

I started forcing myself to use old foods in my weekly cooking. Finally used 2 cans of great northern beans that expired in some chili. It was delicious

@@mandie1456 Before Covid I would always toss expired food and seasonings. Not anymore after doing some research and discovering canned goods are fine to eat indefinitely. The quality just diminishes over time, but still edible. Now just being better about using what I buy and rotating the food so I use up the older stuff first.

I’m so guilty 😮of holding on to boxes, Joshua. Well, guess what my next project is going to be? Yep. Those darn boxes 😂.

Old linens 7. Luggage 8. Original product Boxes 9. Unused personal care items, expired cosmetics 10. books you won’t read again

Since doing the UNCLUTTERED course, this is the first video that I can only do 2 of the steps for. Thanks Joshua. This upload was a celebration for me, I can finally see my progress. Usually this would have been replaying for weeks as I followed each dot point. I will finish this today. ❤💐👏👏👏

Great list! I need to go thru my box in garage of rarely used utensils and see what I can purge. Since listening to you and The.Minimal.Mom I have purged excess of most items you mentioned... which is so gratifying!

I laughed out loud at "boxes" because I have a large 'inventory' - BUT when I am ready to donate, I have the boxes I need to put the stuff in!

.......good to hear.....but have had very creepy experiences with "Craiglist" in my area (DC, MD, VA) .....Nigerian princes, chain letters, etc......waste of time when you get in their data base!!!!

Homeless shelters will take those hotel shampoos and soaps. Also, I do a thing called paperback swap for books. I also take others to McKay's for credit towards new books. You have inspired me for today's project of decluttering by listing at least 20 items on eBay today. Thanks!!!
