Was stationed there back in 97. I did the long tour too. I miss it

As an Italian, which actually spends a lot of time on socials and youtube trying to deeply understand the American culture, I'm very pleased by your nice comments and the "old" experiences here from guys that were stationed back in the 80's and 70's.It seems like Italy and our nice citizens keep a special place in your heart and memory...Things are changed a lot since the days of "Top Gun" and now in Aviano and Pordenone you can find basically everything, big Malls, Ikea, Multiplex theaters, in general quality of life in Northern Italy is top notch and then you can come to my city beach Jesolo, very near to Venice, even though Lignano beach is nearest to you. When I was a child back in the 70's I remember that white Plymouth with that strange plate AFI, the big guys inside scared me with that MP strip on their arms...they were in Jesolo regularly joining our Carabinieri (Italian law enforcement)station during their service...welcome to Italy to the new movers and hope you guys have the best records of your Italian deployment

I loved my time there! My neighbors were all so kind including my landlords. I would go back in a heartbeat!

Ahh. Great memories of my time there in the mid 1980s. The dorm rooms back then were ridiculously small with a gang latrine so I couldn't wait to move off base. Single airmen E-5 and above were on a waiting list to move off base. Thankfully I was on the list for about 3-weeks before getting permission and sharing a nice duplex in Costa de Aviano with a beautiful few of the Santiario Diocesano Madonna del Monte right outside my bedroom window. Our Italian neighbors were the greatest!

We lived in Marsure from 2016-2018, and maybe you’re lucky to find so many Italians that know English, as I was lucky to find maybe 50% of the Italians I talked with knew enough conversational English. With that being said, there were more Italians than I expected that knew English. It’s always respectful to learn the host nation’s language, and make an effort to speak that language whenever possible. I was lucky enough to work on base with most of my coworkers being Italian, and they helped me learn more than I ever would on my own time. It also helped that I’m Roman Catholic and I would attend mass in our town of Marsure. I’m sure your video has helped plenty of people who are PCSing or just settling down in Italy, and helps them know what to expect from their stay. We are lucky enough to be back here in Europe, but this time in Germany, so a little bit of a change, but not much as far as most of what you talked about in your video. Europeans in general have a greater appreciation for family time, and therefore take time out of their day to make time. I did notice in our time there that spouses would gripe about Italians not knowing English that well, and I thought that was very disrespectful, and would say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do!!!” I think we expect too much when we go to other countries, so if the people do speak English, we are very lucky to have that connection.

Oh thanks for the video, I was stationed there 82-84 and I absolutely loved it!!! I had so much fun there and never wanted to leave! So much has changed obviously, but still has that small town appeal. I could live there for the rest of my days and be perfectly fine. Hope to see more from Aviano and the area, Lago Barcis is really nice and we used to jump from the little bridge there. There was a place called the Planetarium outside Pordenone and we also went for the biggest bowls of Gelato there. Wish I could've stayed 4 years LOL

Very neat!! I wonder how much it's changed since then. We also never want to leave, haha. I'll have to check out those spots; we're always down to try a new gelato shop. :)

@@rachellbaker6161 Sadly its probably no longer there after nearly 40 years:( but I've seen a place in Aviano that wasn't there when I was there! The base has probably tripled in size since I left, and when I was there only the flight line and two areas made up the base, closer to town was area 1 and area 2 with dorms, base exchange, commissary and all those things.Yeah beautiful country for sure, so glad I had a car while I was there, I would have missed so much! Thanks again

Awesome video. Thank goodness for RU-vid. When I was in the AF, the housing office/relocations center would let us borrow "VHS" tapes of our new base so we will know what to expect. The video quality was horrible and the music was so cheesy. I have always wanted to live in Italy. I will be subscribing for sure to get more updates about the country.

First world problems on #1. It’s crazy there’s no central AC? Here in the US we’re THE ONLY ones that have central AC. Someone had never traveled before lol

This gives me the "I've never traveled outside of the US and i think the US is the center of the world" vibes... And this is coming from an American. Please don't embarrass us by being uneducated. A lot of these things you could've known by Google or traveling. Like OMG there's no central AC... Well there's none outside of the US lol. So just because your perception of the world is so little doesn't mean they're in the wrong or are inconvenient. You have just always been spoiled without knowing.

Not having A/C when one is accustomed to it is indeed inconvenient. Convenience is entirely a matter of perception. You base your determination of convenience based on your subjective frame of reference. Thus, your comment is the ignorant one. This woman is making a video for fellow Americans. Cultural differences will inform one’s expectations. Convenience is hence determined based on a collective American perception. Check mate.

Hi there! I totally see where you're coming from. Before living in Italy, I moved to South Korea and Poland to teach (I met my husband in South Korea). There is central AC in Poland and South Korea, by the way. :) This video was meant to highlight the major differences b/w Italy and USA. I was hoping it could help others avoid some culture shock. I still say I'd go without central AC and the ease of America to be in Italy again!

@@fitzwilliamdarcy5263 Thank you for your comment! Yes, I was just trying to make videos to help Americans. I have found that for many this is their first overseas assignment. It can be a huge adjustment being away from family and the luxuries we grow accustomed to like central AC.

Sorry. I'm friulian. First time we are Friulians and not "italians" we have a different culture, songs ( not "naples tarantellas") language and more. Friuli is a multicultural land with 3-4 languages. Friulian,Italian, German, Slovenian and relatives culture. Sorry if in our land we havent a/c conditioned. It's this a problem for your life? 🤷 Incredible. Your image for our land is very offensive. Bye 👋
