While it might not be as serious as some of the ones you talked about I can think of several other ones 1. The episode after Jake gets out of prison where he has to deal with the issues afterwards involving letting a guilty man go because he claims innocence, having been through the trauma of prison. 2. The episode, I think it was in season 2, where Jake refuses to take time off during a case despite it being increasingly self destructive and he eventually reveals he did that once, and the guy wound up shooting someone while Jake was taking time off. 3. A few instances in earlier episodes where Jake throws himself into work to escape personal issues, (particularly Unsolvable, where he throws himself into a cold case to distract him from Amy being with Teddy). Like I said they're not as big as what you discussed in the video but I think they are still honorable mentions.

Yeah it was and wasn't. The thing is Terry and Gina are friends and he knows she wouldn't do anything. She also knows that he knows her, and the fact she would never do anything. It's friendly banter between two friends. Also after many rewatches I think it was a small way to test the water to see if the show could tackle bigger issues as it has done. Terry mentioning sexual harassment meetings, seminars, courses etc is a reminder of proper behaviour mixed into a joke. A few American comedies do throw this sexual harassment meetings joke in at some point. It was enough for Terry say something out loud for the audience to get a little laugh about how no one is listening to him, and at the same time raising the issue and making people aware. Amy's story is the real awareness tackling episode. I would say Terry and Gina were the blueprint or birth of the harassment story for Amy.

@@blacklipstick0239 the thing was that it was not at all handled appropriately. She basically threatened him. I understand that she has a right to choose whether she wants to be with someone who has different needs than her, but then so does he. The whole debating about it thing was still at least constructive. They later talked it out and got to the root of the issue which was good and what should have been done. However Amy blackmailing him was not cool. In Friends, when Monica leaves Richard because of the same reason, it's a genuine and mutual moment where both decide to part ways coz they can't meet midway. However, blackmailing and threatening your partner into having kids is not okay. His needs and wishes are just as important as her's.

The thing is they should have talked about kids before marriage, but even when the topic is discussed couples change through time and the topic of children is a huge make it or break it topic. All they could do was sit in the office listening to the news on the radio and hoping Rosa was okay. It reminded me of the time there was a shooting in my city, and my school went under lockdown and we had to sit still quietly in a classroom until for hours after school waiting for new news or updates till the shooter was caught. It was quite a nerve-racking time.

When Amy told the story of how her mentor tried to take advantage of her, I started crying. I couldn’t believe the show decided to go there, but when they did I was shocked and deeply saddened by how little I was surprised...it’s such a pervasive issue that I honestly didn’t think it was surprising that at least one of the female characters had to deal with it...when we found out it was Amy it broke my heart...

Jake seriously has the best character arc. He goes from super childish, to just being fun loving, but supportive beyond any one could imagine. Although it's always hinted at (punching a homophobe) they never show it til he and Amy get together. They bring out the best in each other ( besides a few slip ups like with planning a baby) she becomes more easy going and he becomes more responsible. And the fact he is there for everyone through their rough times (except Charles because he was in prison.) I kind of wish they went a little more in depth with the racism talk, but they're 6 year olds so I can kind of see not having an uber deep conversation.

Terry’s racial profile and Rosa coming out were portrayed perfectly. All of the “real” storyline’s hit differently to everyone but these two made me emotional. This is what I love about Brooklyn 99 it touches on these subjects with the right amount of sensitivity and humour and this is what other shows be they comedy or drama sometimes lose in translation.

Honestly, I loved that they brought Rosa's story up. I personally loved that they portrayed a bisexual woman coming to terms with her sexuality. My parents were a lot like hers at first and told me that it was a phase, or I'd grow out of it, or I will meet the right man someday and just dismissed my honesty. Later on, my family grew to accept me. I just love that there are characters on TV that are like me. Bisexuality was really not discussed in the best light because of Sex and the City and so on. This representation means so much to me, personally.

The whole Casecation episode doesn't sit right with me and I always skip it during rewatch. The way Amy bullies Jake into wanting kids with the whole "Have a baby or I'm leaving you" thing was poor writing and so inconsistent with Amy's character. Also, throughout the series there isn't much implications that Jake doesn't want children. The scenes where Jake and Amy take care of Terry's kids actually shows that he's fond of kids. I guess they did it to give a little depth to their relationship, but I think they could have written it way better.

I love Amy. I'm 14 years old, so I still don't really understand everything, but from what I know myself, I know that I'm a nerd (not like Amy, but I could definitely relate to her) and that's why the fact that she just lives her life without considering the surrounding claims impresses me. Regardless, she is very, very feminist (there was a list of feminist moments, feel free to look her up) and she shows the struggles of trying to do something that is attributed to men and be feminine at the same time, something I relate to as someone who is involved in the fields of science and wants to be a fighter in combat service when she grows up. And regardless, her relationship with Jake is the cutest thing I've ever seen, and it's so much fun to see how they support each other no matter what happens (for example, Jake supports Amy when she confesses about the harassment she's been through, or when Amy is willing to do anything to get Jake out from prison, also to sign a deal with a criminal). Jake is my second favorite character because he is terribly funny and childish, yet he knows how to support when needed and is there for almost every character in every moment of the series (Amy confesses to the sexual harassment, talks to Charles about the adoption, helps Rosa come out of the closet, beats to his hero because he is a homophobe who insulted Captain Holt, explains to Terry's daughters that Terry was arrested because he is black...), in general in almost every serious issue in the series he was a supporting character who helped those going through the difficult situation to get through it, without forgetting to add humor inside . And yeh, because of his relationship with Amy. The only reason he's below Amy in my ranking is that it's harder for me to connect with him emotionally because I relate more to Amy's struggles, but he's definitely a character I really, really like

They honestly really did NOT do justice to the whole "having children" argument. Amy harassed Jake about his not feeling comfortable having a child, essentially trying to bully him into thinking her way. Not once does anyone else call her out on this, and in the end, while Jake does change his mind, everyone treats it like he has finally stopped being childish. And don't even get me started on the whole "debate" scene (aka let's all pressure Jake into having a kid he doesn't want).

And the thing is, we've seen glimpses in previous episodes that hint that Jake would be open to the idea of fatherhood, so him suddenly saying he's not is so out of character. Not to mention the meticulous planner that Amy is, she would've had this discussion with him wayy earlier when they were still dating. This episode was just out of character for both of them.
@GiulianaBruna
@GiulianaBruna 4 года назад
I felt the same. Also I think the episode was a redo of the one when they are moving together and end up moving to Amys. Or the one when Amy wants him to buy a new mattress. (notice the pattern). I think it was a argument they should have had earlier on and tackle it in various episodes. And maybe make his issue "I want kids but I´m afraid". He could have the same arguments but at the end it wouldnt be Jake being pressure into changing his mind but Jake believing he is good enought to nurture a child. Maybe shown him being reminded of all the people he has saved and how he has grown.

The having children debate episode is one of the weaker episodes, for me, due to how out of pocket it made Amy in terms of her backstory and like a bad person due to the ultimatum she gave Jake. Most of the installments on this list are good, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on Casecation, the way they went about it was unbearably toxic, and the writers should be ashamed of themselves for it, all Amy does is try to beat Jake into submission, escalate things unnecessarily, kick him when hes down, reward other people for doing the same, and had absolutely no sympathy or respect for his very real concerns (which he just conveniently gets over after being thrown to the wolves) or even him as a person (he's treated like he's a dime a dozen), imagine if the roles were reversed and Jake treated her like this Imagine if (on the same day Amy lovingly made him such a beautiful anniversary) Jake first tried to crush/humiliate her in some debate he knew she had no chance in, involved other people (who were biased against her) and laughed at her struggling, instead of just talking to her, it would be game over right there, forget about the even worse stuff that followed, but sure when a wife bullies her husband its hilarious (judge me if u want, but I know I would not be okay with Jake treating Amy like this under ANY circumstances and frankly neither would u)

Amy wasn't trying to bully Jake, order is just how she deals with stress. When faced with a complex situation, this is always how she will react. Sure it could have been handled better, but when you have to resolve a complex issue in less than 30 mins, you don't have time to be subtle.
