Definitely vote to continue this. I only read true crime sporadically, so I like having a quality list to pick from.

I recently got a free Audible trial. Many true crime series and podcasts are included so I listened to quite a few. The ones by Paul Holes were my favourite. I love the investigative details and the focus on the victims. I highly recommend Evil Has A Name (about the Golden State Killer) and A Devil in The Valley (an exploration of cold cases Paul Holes worked on). As for books, I liked The Stranger Beside Me and the graffic novel My Friend Dahmer which I just read. A yearly true crime video would be great!

The Heidi Blake one on Putin sounds interesting. There have been a rash of people Putin doesn’t like “falling” out of windows this past year. Decades ago I worked in a group home with youth who were sentenced to custody. I’ve not been able to enjoy true crime books or movies since then. When asked why I do not want to watch/read X, I’d say, I get enough real life at work; I’d rather watch/read something escapist. After 7 yrs I felt burned out, so returned to school to train for jobs that would take me into the northern wilderness far far away from people.

Totally fair to avoid those stories when it's close to home. I always think that my ability to read True Crime is a testament to how "safe & cushy" my life has become

Thanks for the recs! Inevitably I always land on my True Crime space while selecting my monthly TBR so this always helps me find some good ones.

I loved Lolita before I had children and recommended to a friend. She wasn't able to continue very far into it because she had a daughter and could separate her role as mother from the position as a reader. I have heard of The Real Lolita, but not until your mention had I really considered it.

Totally fair... yeah I'd struggle to read it again if I had a young daughter

I like the idea of true crime but I never read them! 😂 I think the only true crime novel I have read is In Cold Blood and that was for college.

Great list. If I could recommend a true crime book to you that was a solid 5 star read called "The pretty girl killer" by Andrew Byrne. Its about a serial killer who operated both in Australia and the USA and was very wealthy. I had not heard of the killer Christopher Wilder before. It was an intense read.

Paul Holes’ book, like all of his accounts, was absolutely fantastic, but I found the conversations with ted bundy book to be mediocre at best, and that’s because TB was so, so arrogant and full of himself he liked to meander and ramble on and on and on and purposefully not answer a question when detectives talked to him. It got to be obnoxious, imho. Anyways, thanks for all the recs 🩸
@TheShadesofOrange

Fair about Ted Bundy. I think I found it so satisfying because I read so many Bundy books trying to understand his psychology and this one final gave me insight into his twisted mind
