The modern Olympics were revived by French educator Pierre de Coubertin, with the first modern Olympics held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. About 241 athletes from 14 countries participated in 43 events. This event, as the beginning of the modern Olympics, revived the spirit of the ancient games and laid the foundation for modern athletic competition, spreading the Olympic ideals worldwide.
