I’d be really curious if you did a deep dive on what specifically your dad didn’t like about RPGs. Was it the gameplay? The themes? The length of them? Super curious.
I think you are a bit older then me. And I'm surprised your dad didn't like it. But Pokémon was my childhood. My very first Pokémon game was Pokémon Yellow. And I also played it to death. I didn't had a super gameboy but I still had a old fashion original gameboy. And I'm still a big Pokémon fan to this day. I can't imagine a life without Pokémon. Ok I don't wear the merchandise anymore like I did when I was 10. But I kept buying the latest new Nintendo handheld systems just to play the new Pokémon games. Even till this day. I bought a Nintendo Switch so I could play Pokémon Let's go. And Phantasia was one of my favorite movies as a kid. That's the movie that got me in to classical music. Especially Beethoven. I can talk about Beethoven till I'm blue in the face.
@razielquorzar Yeah I'm pretty sure his father would love that his son is able to both share all the memories they made with the world as well as have a stable income to support his family.
I can't believe your subscribe back start at 10k until now! Good work. Your father is just kind of opposite of your opinons which he like it or not, but you still playing whole of them.
My dad was also the one who introduced me to gaming. We belonged to a lower income family here in the Philippines and in order for people to play video games in the 90s was to rent it on an hourly basis. My dad introduced me to Super Mario in 1992 when I was only 3 years old . He had no interest in gaming but he wanted me to experience what other rich kids enjoy. Sadly, he passed away in 2003 and I will always be thankful to him for introducing me to the amazing world of video games. I also appreciate this channel as it takes me back to the time when my dad bring me around to try new games even though I really had no idea that he's saving up money just for me to play some games on weekends.
We used to rent a console as well in a small arcade, it was like 20 pesos per hour for sega genesis or snes. Me and my cousins would play the whole afternoon, we usually play street fighter II or MK. Good times! Cheers to our parents for giving us an amazing childhood!
You should do an interview with your mum one day talking about all the video games they bought you and if she liked being filmed all the time. So lucky to have all these memories on tape. 👍🏻
It was TORTURE playing through these games again! Hope you enjoyed the video. In case you missed it, here's a similar Top 10 I did a while back "Top 10 Games Dad Hated That I Loved" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vcNC8HoqoTI.html Thanks guys! Have a good one.
Also hate Pokémon games, grew up in the 90s so we played the same stuff Tyler. Your dad had awesome taste in games. I loved my Sega cd, had turbo but not a lot of games while it was released. I never got the Jaguar but your dad was smart and bought them as they died out in stores. I wish I had the sense to hold on to more games but I always traded all my games for that next hot system. Fave Sega cd games, Road avenger, Silpheed, Snatcher, Willy Beamish, Sonic cd
Hey Tyler I wanted you to know your one of the people that inspired me to start making video game retrospectives and more on RU-vid, I don’t mean to plug myself but if you want to check it out that be awesome! Don’t expect something so high quality I use the tools I have and I don’t have the best speaking voice because I have a miled stutter. But if you want to check it out I’d appreciate it! Always here support you man no matter what! :)
Aside from Pokémon, it seems your dad had a keen sense for games he didn't favor. His preference to steer clear of being a Sega enthusiast is understandable. While I'm not particularly fond of JRPGs myself, Pokémon, especially the early games, remains a notable exception. My affection for Pokémon endures to this day. Indeed, your dad's preferences were almost impeccable, leaning more towards Nintendo.
@@MyRetroLife I’d appreciate it again like I said I appreciate it! I try to do things with an angle from someone who has a physical disability, Don’t expect nothing to crazy it’s all done with an iPhone 10 and it’s microphone I already don’t have the best voice so I sound like I have marbles in my mouth because of the microphone lol but I’m always here to support your stuff Tyler it’s a great inspiration to me! Can’t wait to the next my retro life episode!
Forgive me if this sounds weird Tyler, but your dad reminds me of my mom. My parents divorced when I was a baby and she worked hard for us. She bought a Super Nintendo which we had for several years, then a PS One Mini with the attachable LCD screen in 2001. I played other systems at friend's houses. She couldn't afford much else but she would save up money for quarters and take us to arcades. My dad would also take me to arcades on the weekends we were together to enjoy the games he grew up with (and the ones I liked) but when I was 10 in 1998, he bought me an atomic purple Game Boy Color with Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Pinball for Christmas. It was a big game changer (pun intended). Not long after I received Pokemon Crystal then the Game Boy Advance. My grandfather retiring from Alcoa here in 2000 took my PC gaming experience from casual to hardcore and he was still tinkering with PC until he passed in 2021 at 85. Anyway, my dad bought me the types of games that you mentioned because I liked them, though he was never interested. He wanted the stuff from the late 70's and the 80's. My Mom, even though she couldn't afford much, enjoyed games with me. Her last favorite system was the Nintendo Wii that she played the crap out of while watching her favorite show The Office until we lost her to cancer in 2011. I've said this before, but thank you for your retro videos. Alot of my childhood recorded on VHS is gone because of greedy family members taking everything and destroying most of it after my grandfather passed. I was so hurt by it that my grandparents showed up in a dream telling me that the good memories I have of them are far more important than the physical items that were lost. Now my dad is the only parent I have left and he plays alot of retro and arcade games through emulation with his grandchildren (my sons). I only hope my mom is watching over the grandkids she didn't meet on this side of the grave (my firstborn and only girl lived 6 months and I have no doubt they're together right now. It's awesome to see you honor your dad and know that you yourself are a father. I can relate to this 100%. We honor those who have gone before by giving a good life to the future of our family. You are doing an awesome job.
How can you not like POKEMON THO ... POKEMON MADE IT TO THE HOOD . IM FROM THE STREETS OF NEWARK NJ BEEN TO PRISON GANG MEMBER "WELL NOT NO MORE";& STILL PLAY POKEMON
@@Gameboy-Unboxings maybe cause when we was younger how popular it was , you couldn't avoid it . Plus it made sense , water beats fire , water conducts electricity ect . Im from the trenches of newark nj & still play till this day
I think it's really cool that you memorialize your dad in this way and share the memories you made with us. It's very cool to see the positivity he had, and the traits he passed down to you shows.
I stand firmly beside your father on this one. Could never get excited about RPGs or Pokemon. Great channel though buddy. So nice to be able to time travel back and share time with a wholesome family who just loved games like so many of us did
I agree, rpgs or Pokemon just sorta annoy me, mainly because my dad forced them so much on me when i was growing up, he was a bethesda fan and a pokemon fan and it sorta just drove me up the wall. Also i beat Pokemon red, but considering it seems like pokemons story telling can be lazy at times or not changing that much, thats just how i view it, like Red felt similar to future releases, and i just realized it wasnt for me. Since it didnt feel like they were doing much i cared about at the end.
@@BirgerJarl-it5lz what are you talking about lol its got nothing to do with me being a console gamer i just dont like the genre, ive played rpgs for most of my life mainly because its all my dad would play and talk about and ive never been interested in them
These therapeutic videos are always so good and entertaining. Would love to see what modern games he'd like if he were with us today. If you're able to one day
My dad's biggest regret was that me and my brother had any type of computer/console AT ALL! We were hooked but he always felt we should be doing more traditional things like "going outside" and playing football or cycling etc haha
It always cracks me up when I hear your dad's eternal hatred for RPG video games. Reminds me of how I annoyed my dad when I played Battlefront with him as a kid and all I wanted to do was explore the worlds instead of fighting the enemies. "Quit exploring the fields and come fight!" It cracks me up every time I hear "he would just shake his head". My first console was (and still is, since I still have it) my Dad's old Sega Genesis. Even though I was born in 1997, I got the classic hand-me-down treatment when it came to looking for a video game console to have in my room. With Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat being the provided games (still have them to this day), I was hooked to the point that I still occasionally play them to this day. As stated, they still work just fine, even after being briefly submerged in a flood a few years ago! Kinda looks weird (but satisfying) playing it on a 4K tv without special convertors.
I used to play N64 wrestling games with mine, and one of my favorite things was creating my own wrestlers. Wasn't really the highlight for my old man, he made a few but he was more of a "just turn the game on and play' whereas I spent too much time making mine lol
Crash Bandicoot its about time 100% is by far my worst video game experience. It's just poorly designed on so many levels and also has frustrating bugs, especially compared to the four classic predecessors. The lack of variety, perfect relics and far too long levels are particularly bad. And since I've always been a huge fan of the series, it's even more annoying. I'd rather play ET on the Atari than that ever again.
I get it. He hates Pokémon because the visors and graphics but kids like us we like to do it doesn’t matter about the graphics and stuff but dads are different.
Most of the bad game memories I have from my childhood have turned out to become some of my most treasured moments.. It's kind of strange but these days I really do love those games just as much as the best ones - all those memories just blend together into a juicy smoothie of retro awesomeness that I just have to chug down! Thanks for yet another fantastic trip down memory lane, Tyler!
The awesome blossom - there is an onion blossom at Outback Steakhouse. I thoroughly enjoyed the awesome blossom. I remember the ads in the mail that would give a free awesome blossom with the purchase of two entrees.
Your dad was awesome!! I think I say that with every video you post lol, but it’s true! My parents rarely ever played games with me, they didn’t care for them. But that’s ok. Great video!
Only true video game players have games they love and hate, your dad was a legend! Been waiting for a new my retro life episode this one’s gonna be a good one! 😃
Your dad was WONDERFUL !!!! And I agree with him . I'm still not a fan of Pokémon or RPGs . But I am a 51 year old grumpy old man . To each their own .
I always try to get my dad to try roleplaying games since he hates most online games, but he always says "it sounds boring, just running around doing whatever you want. What's the goal?" Me: "Whatever you want!" "Boring." LOL!
That’s funny! My stepdad doesn’t play video games, but he loved sewer shark. I remember he would just walk into my room and say. “ put in the sewer shark” 😂🤣😂…. yeah, it’s not a good game
I still love pokemon. I played red version more, but my favorite was silver version I spent so much time there it helped me when my dad passed away to get threw life 😊 🎉last game he ever bought me still remember like yesterday 😢 thankyou dad 💪💯🫡🙏✨️👌
Just love your videos my dad filmed me too, but not as much as your dad wish he did one kid thought my dad was with a news crew, how big the cameras were back then. I was curious on the Mario 3 do you still have that rare version cartridge your aunt found finally at Toys r us.
I bought Pokémon Red and Blue on the same day and gave one to my best friend. I was 15 then and we’re still friends. We were quietly obsessed with Pokémon 😂 💪🏾
My dad didn't like video games, but we bonded over comedy, whether it be stand-up or movies. I've come around to some musical comedians, but back in the 00's, we groaned every time one would come on Premium Blend on Comedy Central. We'd just tune out and maybe talk during their set. We loved George Carlin.
Great video! I forced myself to enjoy Fantasia as it was the third Genesis game I owned after Altered Beast and Sonic. It was uhh, really bad. But Infrogrames DID publish Alone in the Dark, which was excellent in its day.
My dad wasn't massive on gaming but used to enjoy watching me and my brother play. He also used to just say "want a new game?" Every couple of weeks and take us to Toys R Us to get a new one. He did enjoy Desert Strike though and I used to smile when setting the SNES up in the living room then watching him get into it.
Awesome you have so much footage from your young days and all i don't have anything of my family but a few pictures. Great man im happy for you to have all those memories. You said your dad didn't like RPG games im just curious is mario rpg a exception? Im sure you had it back in the day . I was in seventh grade when Pokemon GB game's cane out too i think thats when Mario rpg cane out 96 or 97
Pokemon Blue is a surprise to me! I loved those games as well and spent many hours playing this one! It is funny when I look back at games I loved but my brothers hated. Bart Vs. The Space Mutants is a terribly designed game, but for some reason I was obsessed and mastered it. My brothers despised it with every inch of their being. Great video Tyler, keep em coming!
Omg those Simpsons games for the NES were not good. I was trrrrryinggggg to overlook it, but it didn't work. It was more like, just be appreciated that they made a Simpsons video game finally for the home systems and don't complain lol. All I can say is thank GOD they made a classic Simpsons arcade video game that is stellar and incredible to this day.
about the RU-vid weird policy with your childhood videos, have you ever thought of displaying the year of the video while it's playing? Maybe it could help
Anything turn based i hate it gives me anxiety, i like to be in control of my player at all times if its action rpg id play it but thats as far as it goes…I know theres a lot of good games im missing out on but hey thats me…Bring on more Zelda games 🙏🏽I’d say Fantasia would have to be the best from Dads worsts picks
That’s why I prefer Elder Scrolls style RPG. You get to explore freely but you still get all the RPG elements. Turn based was fun when I was younger. Sometimes turn based is alright if the story is really captivating like an old dungeon crawler, but overall I agree they feel to limited.
This is such a cool idea for a video, man. My father hated games in general, just couldn't understand why someone would play them at all. As a gaming father, I never thought I would have those same feelings myself, but I'm finding that I loathe certain games and, more accurately, certain types of games. My son is a huge Minecraft junkie, getting into the dirt of the game so to speak, and the more I play it with him, the more I end up like your father on the recliner shaking my head. I'm much more of a JRPG person myself, and I'm trying to find ways to "turn" him in the right direction lol. It's tough being a dad, as you know. Great vid!
To the best of my knowledge, my father only ever played 2 video games: Kings Quest 2, and Marble Madness. We got a Tandy 1000EX computer in the mid 80s and these were the first two games we got. My dad, brother, and myself, worked our way through KQ2 together, and he seemed to really enjoy that. Marble Madness utterly broke him though. He could get to the last level, but could not pass it, and it made him really angry. So angry, that I am pretty sure he never touched a never video game ever again. This is one of the many things I wished I had asked him about before he passed, I’m pretty sure my memory serves me well but I’ve always wanted to confirm it. Thanks for posting this, even though video games weren’t a thing my dad and I really shared together beyond that brief glimmer in time, I find you processing your own emotions and memories of dad to be cathartic for similar purposes myself. What a treasure your dad left behind for you with all this footage. Cheers!
Quickly becoming my favorite channel. This hits ALL the nostalgia for me. You have no idea lol. Even though I was raised on nothing but a gamecube, this time period and your videos are so crazy similar to my experience
My dad's list of games he hated was quite robust. He hates them all and I never had the experience of playing a video game with him to this very day. He did record me playing Spiderman versus the King Pin for the Sega Genesis as well as Sonic 2. He was definitively a camcorder dad! I love both my parents and they always have my best interest at heart. I will say that when I have children, I will make a point to play at least some video games with them. That's inevitable. Cherish these memories forever, Tyler. Your father's memory is alive and well!
Ill never forget the time my poor income family got a sega. We played it for a few months then sony released the Playstation. At the time the Playstation I belive sold for $200 dollars. That was a lot of money back in the 90s. My dad brought this game home for us one day. My dad was a truck driver and to make up for all the time he was on the road he would bring back a game for us. One day he brought home grand theft auto for PS1. Needless to say when we played it he heard the vocals of the pedestrians and said "What the Fck did that just say?" Our response was but dad you bought it for us?!? He told us well just dont let your mother hear that game turn the volume down.. What a Legendary father 😂😂
I too hate WoW lol My dad was into electronics, computers etc. he wasn’t really into gaming but introduced me to it through the Commodore 64 and played the occasional game on my consoles but never seriously. Then he would buy me an NES, then a Genesis(both at Christmas time about a year apart), then I begged for an SNES and finally got one at one birthday with Street Fighter 2 which is why I begged for it lol. After that we skipped everything until PS1 in about 1997. Then I built a PC and didn’t get another console until I worked at Toys R US during PS2 launch and bought one. From there I never missed a console when I was buying them myself.
conan was actually a game called "Myth:History of the Making". originally for the c64, it actually wasn't that bad, and had good graphics for the time. they also released a port on amiga cd32. but yeah, the nes version should've never happened as it has nothing to do with conan, and has terrible controls. the worst game in my opinion, is sword of sodan for the genesis, yet the amiga version i like.
You know, I'm sure if your Dad saw you raid in WoW and conquer Ragnaros in Molten Core or Nefarian in Blackwing Lair, he may have been able to like it. Because the game may not have an "end" but it kind of does if you defeat the currently available content. Then anything new afterwards is like an awesome update. But I definitely understand why he never liked it lol
The worst game I've ever played of the top of my head has to be Suicide squad kill the justice league for PS5/XBOX SERIES X. The Batman arkham games where amazing but this game just screws absolutely everything up. Story, gameplay, the treatment of characters and all the woke nonsense. It's all puke.
Sewer shark was boring had that game as a kid on sage cd I like the cd but the only game I really played was sonic cd that was one of my favorites on there
Great video! Agreed with dad. Don't like World of Warcraft at all. The pervert dances, etc. Never liked it. Vic Tokai made unfortunate games, too. Jaguar was an incredibly-missed opportunity. No music in games was normalized by generic games like Halo, and has unfortunately become the (sad) standard.
Yeah. World of Warcraft is trash. I remember when it was HUGE and everyone was playing it. Before the Wii, this is the game I remember seeing women play and thought: Women my mom's age play video games? And this was it. Yeah, I hated this game and it was super expensive. HOWEVER! Warcraft and StarCraft are, to this day, my go to games for the PC and then after those Command and Conquer. It took me a long time to learn how to play this series and in multiplayer, there's no way I could ever put up much of a fight, but I love Warcraft and StarCraft but, not World of Warcraft, garbage. Play Phantasy Star Online instead
I remember having Virtual Hydlide on the Saturn...I spent way too many hours trying to like the game! Choppy, control sucks, and so boring...never gets better.. :(
Man…WE WOULD LOVE to see some crash&bash content on games that actually suck from your perspective, Tyler! Please do some future entertainment on some comedy with sorry video games lol
The game you promote seems like something I would really hate. Agree with most your dad didn't like. I think Sewer Shark is pretty good though. Virtual Hydlide is really weird, but I enjoyed completing it.
Did your dad ever get a chance to play Kingdom Hearts? Since he loved Disney, I wonder if your dad would have liked it. It might have served as a great bridge for him to possibly give RPGs another chance. :)
I had sewer shark. It was kind of cool, but it’s like one of those games where you’re just guessing which way to turn. Also had surgical strike and the cinematic Dracula. These games were weird and hard to make it through. Also had a weird boxing game in black and white that wouldn’t work right on the second or third disc.
@@MyRetroLife I have the biggest respect for you Tyler bro you’ve made me cry sadness and happy tears so many times you have a great way of telling amazing story’s 😊👊
Supp Man, it seemed like your Dad really liked the Castlevania type of interactive moments when he could watch and everyone was involved having fun. Just wondering but did he like mario party games???
OMG you unlocked memories here. I had one of those Casio keyboards when I was a kid, and I would play that song all the time over and over again. Very good times!!
Pokemon just seems like one of those games that it's really hard to get into later in life. My first pokemon was on the GBC. I can't remember which one. I always thought it was either Silver or Crystal, but my parents INSIST it was yellow. What I do remember is CONSTANTLY wanting to play it, and CONSTANTLY begging my dad to save it for me. So one day, when I went to play it, i couldn't find it. My parents told me they had returned it because I couldn't read. I was disappointed. I not only no longer had probably my favorite game for GBC (despite not being able to get anywhere, it was that, or paperboy and Arthur's day out.... so yeah) but my parents seemed to just think I'd never read. I mean, they could've just shelved it until I could read. So clearly they had very low expectations of me. But it finally clicked when I got ruby years later. Holy hell. This is still my favorite pokemon game. Well, specifically ruby, sapphire, and emerald. I really don't care which one I play, but I had a red GBA SP, and the game that was almost always in it was that red Pokemon Ruby cart. It was just the way the universe should be. I beat it at least twice as a kid, and I don't beat many games even once. I went on to play a lot of the DS entries, including Diamond, platinum, and Soul SIlver. But when black came out, I was in that perfect era of late middle school where I just felt like I was done with Pokemon. The new one, Pokemon Black, had some really dumb pokemon, in my opinion at the time, and I had newer games to play. MMORPGs (I'd pretty much play a new free to play mmo every week) and ps2. Later xbox 360 and call of duty, then going back to PC gaming to play shooters. Sometime around the late 2010s I got back into the idea of just chilling with a controller at the PC. While I still play some shooters and serious games (Ready or Not, Arma 3, and other experiences) I don't have a lot of time to fully enjoy them. So story games I can just save whenever are great. Arcady games and rogue likes are nice in theory, but in practice repetitive gameplay is difficult for me. But I picked up Pokemon Black after hearing so many good things, as well as the 3DS ones. It's really hard to convince myself to play it though. I have a LOT of games, so that's true for any one game, but Pokemon just doesn't hold me like it once did. Except the nostalgic ones. Personally, the newer ones (Switch mainly) don't feel like pokemon games without that 2d ish style. Even the 3ds ones feel like an extension of the old style from Ruby
I never played them, nor ever saw them played but I wonder if there are people that enjoyed Fantasia and Conan and Night Creatures, I don't even think the graphics are so bad compared to SNES or Genesis games from what I saw from the video and the awesome possum jingle lol
I got to to agree on some of his takes. I'm a mid 80s kid, Pokeman was primed for someone my age to enjoy and got love from my friends in the 90s, but never appealed to me. Still doesn't. Same for WoW. I get why others like these but just really don't like them myself.
There are games so bad I didn't bother to finish. But there are bad games that I did finish. Call of Duty 3 is a huge step backwards in the franchise. I remember playing through the campaign and thought "I am not enjoying this." But I trudged through it and want nothing to do with it ever again.
The most disappointing game I ever got was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on DS. I loved the book and the movie and I was ready to love the game. I saved up my money and begged my parents to take me to the mall to buy it. The game was so bad 😂 but I played it because I was not going to declare my money was wasted. It eventually grew on me and I remember it fondly but I would never play it again willingly.
We all hated FMV games back when they were new. The video was so grainy and terrible that it made for a horrendous watching experience and unfortunately, there was no “game” to these games. It was a technical gimmick with the barest game elements layered on top. FMV games were a lazy dead end even when they were the newest tech.
My Dad mainly liked real time strategy games like Populous 3 and Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. He was born 1946 so more of the TV generation but there were a few games he liked. I never got into Pokemon but my little brother was into it.
My dad hates pay-to-win and the only fighting games he is okay with playing are Super Smash Bros. (he's intimidated by long combos and complex inputs). Dad also avoids games where you can easily cramp your hands by doing ridiculous control inputs. But he does like racing games, LEGO games, business simulators and DOOM and he dabbles a bit in Pokémon as well, given that it involves wireless battles and he has a solid team ready. He is also fine with the Star Fox games' multiplayer, even though I am the best player in my family by far.
