If it weren't for our love of video games since we were kids, we might not be the board gamers we are today, and we probably wouldn't have a RU-vid channel. All You Can Board is normally all about board games, but after 3+ years, we (Dylann & Carlo) figured it was finally time to reveal our top 10 video games of all-time. Steeped in nostalgia, these games played a massive role in who we are (and what we like) today.
Please let us know what you think of seeing content related to video games on the channel. We (including Braiden, who was not in this video) would consider doing more video game content sporadically in the future (the focus will always remain on board games).

When you guys were talking about mostly doing old games I got excited and I was not disappointed. This was a nice trip down memory lane. Metroid and Zelda are iconic too. Prime, Link to the Past, and Fusion are all in my top 20. I’m surprised neither of you had Chrono Trigger! Truly a masterpiece

Chrono Trigger is phenomenal, and even though I only discovered it in my mid 20s (and only beat it that one time) it's for sure one of the best SNES games ever. It blew me away. It's probably somewhere in my top 20 or 25, and if I had played it more times it might even be higher up. Sooooo good. Soundtrack, time travel, story... all ahead of their time. - Carlo

What a difficult list to make! Darn you Dylan, posting Dark Souls footage! Now I want to start up a new character! Dylan, being an RPG fan (played every FF game except for 2) If you'd like a modern JRPG that respects your time, I cannot recommend Chained Echoes enough! I love hearing peoples favorite video games. It tells me a lot about them! Thank you both for sharing! I loved the non-board game video! It was a pleasant surprise. There's so many great games that Carlo mentioned, but there could only be 10 (or 11) I struggled with narrowing mine down 11) Hollow Knight 10) Street Fighter 4 (my first competitive game) 9) Rocket League (have over 1,500 hours. Diamond 4 / Champion 1) 8) Zelda Ocarina of time (Link to the past is a close 2nd) 7) FF7 (but also a toss up between 9, 10, and chrono trigger) 6) Witcher 3 (it lead me to read all of the books) 5) Persona 4 4) Hades 3) Stardew Valley (changed my perspective on what video games can be. that "relaxing experience" dylan mentioned) 2) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 1) Dark Souls

I'm too old to have loved video games as a kid, although I do remember playing my uncle's Pong game, when I was 11ish. The games you grew up with were the games my kids grew up with, and I played too. We're a Nintendo family and had every system from the NES on. The NES and SNES were mine and I let the kids play on them. My mother, who is now 75, had those systems before I did and can run circles around me...not that it takes much...in those side scrolling platformers. The N64 on were for the family but I didn't play on them much because of motion sickness issues. The kids had Gameboy Advances, but I couldn't see the screen well enough. I started with the DSi. I still have and use my 3DS XL Pokemon X edition. Now the kids have moved on and the consoles in the house are mine again. I adore the Switch and 3DS and don't see myself ever parting with them, but I might prefer PC overall for gaming. Games in no particular order that have been important: The Sims franchise, especially TS2, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and New Horizons (I'd love to play the earlier games when the villagers had more personality), Various Pokemon games starting with Soulsilver (I've shamefully never finished one, but enjoy them so much!), The SNES DKC games (DKC 1 is the only platformer I've ever completed, not for lack of trying back in that NES/SNES era. I'm rubbish at them!), and the granddaddy of all, World of Warcraft, another big family adventure, once upon a time. I stuck with it longer than any of them. I'm sure I'm forgetting many. A couple more fun facts to add to an already too long comment. FF 1: I have 476 games in my Steam library, most, if not all, casual. I love Hidden Object adventure games, among some other casual game genres. Now I'm amassing a collection of digital versions of tabletop games. FF 2: My oldest and youngest sons are really into the Smash: Melee competitive scene in our state. The younger one runs/hosts one of what I understand to be the biggest weekly tournaments in the state.

Okay, I did play some Pacman as a kid, but I didn't love it. I got a little Pacman handheld game for Christmas, when I was in high school, but my mom commandeered it and played it obsessively. That's another game she was great at and I stunk at!
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard Год назад
I love this comment. No such thing as too long comment when it's filled with so many goodies. No shame in not beating those Pokemon games, they could be pretty tough, and if you get far and realize you're not a high enough level to take down those final gyms, it can be disheartening to just spend time leveling up elsewhere. Same thing happened to me with one of them a long time ago. Dylann and I also played a LOT of the Sims franchise when we were younger. Those games were easy to get carried away with playing for hours on end... So cool that you played WoW together as a family. That sounds like a really cool experience. And wow - 476 Steam games is a lot, but I get it, especially if that's your primary source of gaming, and if you play a lot of those casual/shorter games. I've only tried a couple of those hidden object games but I enjoyed them and would consider trying more as a relaxing game for when I don't have the energy for something more involved. Do you have any particular good ones you'd recommend? Finally, re: Smash: Melee, that's amazing! What are their favourite characters? Tell them - "Dylann and Carlo could take you down with Sheik", haha. (But seriously, it sounds like we would get destroyed by them) - Carlo
@corihulet739
@corihulet739 Год назад
@@AllYouCanBoard It's not so much that I couldn't beat those Pokemon games as that I didn't stick with them. Not because they were bad. I don't really know why. I think I would start researching and get caught up in all this information that assumed prior knowledge, then feel way behind the curve. I'd mean to really dig in to all the stats and breeding stuff and in the meantime would just kind of wander off into other pursuits, then start over when the next game came out. It's probably not even that important if you're just playing the story and collecting Pokemon.

@@AllYouCanBoard Okay, I've inquired of my boys about Melee and learned from the youngest that he is currently playing Falco and before that, Sheik. He says his older brother plays Ganon, Peach, Sheik, and Zelda, all at a tournament relevant level. I suggested you could all could have a 4 way Sheik battle and he said that's every Sheik player's worst nightmare because Sheik is a character that is good for making it so you have all the fun, and while she's great at making many characters/opponents not have fun, she's even better at it against herself! He added that he doesn't actually mind and finds sheik/sheik battles fun. He also says if you ever want to netplay, they'd be down. :D

Arguably the greatest metroidvania of all time is Hollow Knight. I cannot recommend this game enough. When you play it you have to go through blind. The exploration is unparalleled, the hidden lore is a joy to uncover, and the boss fights have given more frustration, and subsequently satisfaction, than possibly ANYTHING else I can recall. If you play it you won't regret it.

This is one of Dylann's all-time favs, I thought it would make his top 10 but I'm guessing it's probably close. I also played through almost all of it at his house many many years ago and I was really impressed. I like how it wasn't fully turn-based where you just stand still choosing commands. Uncharted 4 5. Zelda Breath of the wild 6. Assassins creed origins (or another one in the series) 7. Road trip (nostalgia pick for me and a hidden gem of a game) 8. Fifa 06 and Fifa 17 (06 was the first one I played and sunk way too many hours of my childhood into, 17 was my favourite recent edition) 9. MX vs ATV unleashed 10. Battlefield 3 I got into video gaming when I was around 12 and the ps2 had already been out for a while. I owned ps2, ps3, psp and still own a ps4 pro which I barely play games on anymore as I would always rather play a board game. Well that's something else alright Funky lists for both of you. For myself I can only say that I actively tried to get less screen time and this is what originally pulled me to board games some twenty years ago. That being said, here are a few of the top ones for me, including a fresh title that y'all should get your hands on. First and foremost, Disco Elysium. This one's a must try. To that I'd add some others like Quake3 (+CPM), Starcraft, Dune 2 (the first RTS!), Wolf3D + Doom + Doom 2, all Diablos, World of Warcraft, 4D Sports driving (Stunts), Horizon Chase Turbo. Never properly went into Skyrim, Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment which I might've liked too. Special mentions go out to Stardew Valley and Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

- 100% agree on reducing screen time in favour of board games - Disco Elysium is at the TOP of my Steam wishlist and has been for a while, I just need to actually get it and start playing but it sounds amazing - games like Quake, Doom, Wolf3D, etc. were a little before I got into PC gaming - I might check out Stardew Valley some day - someone actually emailed our AYCB account a while ago specifically to recommend HoM&M3, they said they thought we'd like it based on the board games we like, so I might have to check that out. I made a top 10 list a while ago, which includes Franchises instead of specific games (because Honestly, most of them would probably be LoZ games) 1. Legend of Zelda (Can't pick a #1) 2. Psychonauts (1+2, somehow the second one had the same feel as the first one released 16 yrs later) 3. Elder Scrolls (I've played Skyrim so much, but Oblivion was a huge part of my teenage-dom) 4. Dragon Age (Origins was amazing, Inquisition did it well too) 5. Mass Effect (Unpopular opinion, Andromeda was probably my favorite) 6. Assassin's Creed (Valhalla wins for theme) 7. Super Mario Sunshine 8. Stardew Valley 9. Overcooked 10. Sims 4 (Probably my most played game of all time. It's perfect for big story game in-betweens) I'm a huge fan of fantasy RPGs. I'm not looking for something grindy, I want story above all else. Psychonauts has a huge nostalgia element to it, because it was the first game I bought with my own money, and it's so clever. I grew up as a Nintendo kid, playing NES/SNES/GameCube, so LoZ will always hold a special place in my heart (especially because BoTW and TotK have been so phenomenal as new games), Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess are sooo good.

I've never played Link to the Past, actually. I played the OG LoZ, and I think my brother had Link to the Past, but I never got to it. I'm worried if I played now, it wouldn't have the same feel, because I'm lacking nostalgia. All that nostalgia comes from Ocarina of Time for me. I had so many siblings that it was hard to find solo time to play games, so I played a lot of hand off MegaMan/Mario.

That's totally fair, just giving you a hard time. I went back and tried Chrono Trigger for the first time ever in my mid 20s, and it's now one of the best SNES games I've ever played, but maybe that's because I hadn't played any 3D/updated versions. So I'm not sure how you'd feel if you went and played Link to the Past today. Just like I'm not sure if I were to go back and play Ocarina of Time a 2nd time and got past the Shadow Temple, would beating the Spirit Temple and final boss be enough to make it my #1 Zelda game? Yeah…. I’m 44 now and my first games came on cassettes and made a fantastic screeching noise when you loaded them! 😂you are spot on with TMNT…. I think that was the second level. So tough! Had about a 10% success rate and when you lost you had to start from the begining

@Dan The Crow Ah yes... "starting from the beginning", a concept so rare in today's video games. Sometimes I wonder - how the HECK did I beat any of these games when I was a young kid? I remember going back and trying for DAYS to beat Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson's Punch Out when I was in my 20s, and I just couldn't do it. I got so frustrated and gave up. When I was kid I beat him multiple times.

Earthbound!

I only tried Earthbound for the first time in my early or mid 20s, and by that point it was on an emulator and I had other things going on in my life, I just never got around to beating it. But I loved how unique it was, the sense of humour really stood out. Maybe I'll revisit it some day, a couple of my best childhood friends swear by this game. And Ness was always a fun character in the Super Smash Bros games. - Carlo

One of the best SNES games for sure, and I would play it again any day, but not quite in my top 10. - Carlo

Nice list! Dylann and I have played (and enjoy) a lot of those, especially the N64 games, and I know Dylann played a lot of WoW (but I never tried it). Never even heard of Tibia until now and I've never played any MMORPGs but I'm curious, I'll take a look at that one. Thanks. - Carlo

We touched on Zelda: BoTW when talking about our #3 game. I haven't played it, Dylann thinks it's good but not one of his fav Zelda games. I also haven't played any of the Civ games and I'm kinda worried about how hooked I'll get on that type of game, haha.
