Awenda well then that’s your fault for buying such a shitty deal lmao, why would you pay $98 for a product without doing research on it? Ofc they were meant to be student grade. Also tip Micheals is expensive as hell if you are trying to buy art supplies search for it on the internet first then go to the store cuz chances are you can find the product for much cheaper online.

The Winsor and Newton Cotman pocket set was my first exploration into quality watercolour and it made such difference in my enjoyment of watercolour as a hobby. I plan to invest in the larger Cotman half pan set in the future. I like the Strathmore cold press 140lb paper as well, but it was also one of the only quality papers available to me when I first started out that was within my price range.

I LOVE Sennelier! I use them a lot, along with W&N Professional, Schmincke, M Graham, and Daniel Smith. I cannot recommend them highly enough. I love that they made a smaller, more affordable little set for new folks to start with professional quality. I need to choose one for my daughter as she travels a lot. Thank You for reviewing them all. PS To get your professional quality pans to lay down heavy, use a bulb syringe to drop a drop of water on each pan before using.

The small winsor & newton set was my first watercolor set, even after playing around with other brands they are still my favorite, mostly because they are less opaque this makes it easier to start painting cautiously and layer colors up slowly plus the mixing qualities are great. I only added a few Schmincke colors: a bright pink and a neutral gray (to be able to mix every color), 2 greens and 1 red. However I’m a bit surprised by the W&N red because the one I got was much more like a yellowish orange.

I have many brands of watercolors...Prima, Cotman, Sennilier, Van Gogh, QoR and Daniel Smith! If people are looking for quality beginners paints, I recommend Van Gogh hands down. They come in pan sets as well as tubes which you can create pans from. The colors are vibrant, heavily pigmented, easy to blend and very inexpensive, depending on the site you can buy a tube for under $3! I have heard from other artists that they even have kept them on their palettes after they have migrated to high end paints, which says a lot! For high end paints, I prefer Daniel Smith for all the wonderful, unusual colors and textures they create. I was very impressed with what you could create with just the 6 primary colors, however, but it is difficult to not buy so many of their wonderful colors, lol. Thank you for this video!

Thanks for the demo, it is really useful to see these sets in action without needing to buy them. :) Personally I started with a Winsor&Newton Cotman set, but got frustrated with it quickly, because it is hard to rewet and you can get out only a little bit of pigment a time. When I tried making greater washes or big loose florals it made it really hard, stuff got dry before I could add more. For me it was a game changer when I invested in Daniel Smith Essentials. Turns out I like tubes much better with all the palettes stacking up. :D

I think the Winsor and Newton Cotman Sketcher palate is fine for starting out. White Nights is a very good value for more professional paints and M. Graham is actually a pretty good value as well once you know what you want. They just don't sell smaller sets or pans. For trying out a lot of colors and for getting a good metal palate, I'd suggest Arteza 36 half pan set. It's a bit opaque and there is no info on the individual paints but you get get the whole thing for about $30. The metal palate would sell for about $20 on ebay so you can't really lose. If you want to start out by learning to mix colors you can just buy a metal palate and empty half pans on ebay and then buy the basic 5 paint (tube) set from M. Graham for about $30.

I love to use good watercolour papers, but usually, I would buy postcards or A5 sizes. I think they are cheaper but more interesting to play with. I do watercolour for fun, but I am so happy that I got Winsor Newton paint. They are much better than the cheap ones. When I do not know colour mixing, I would think 12 colours too limited, but it's not the case.

A year later, I’m curious how this worked out for you. I’m stuck between doing what you said, or buying a higher end pallet/pans.

You should do a review on shimmer water colors! That would be so fun to watch and see you work with!

I've dabbled in watercolour for a few years and I've found this video very beneficial. I usually stick to the W & N as I can get them locally along with replacement colours. I've also found to my cost that the paper makes a huge difference, took me a long while to find this out. Tfs xo

I started with the Windsor Newton Cotman set you showed. It was ok. Now I use Daniel Smith Ultimate Mixing Set. I love the Daniel Smith paints. Much easier to work with than my first set. Thanks for these videos. Very hood tips and information.

I’ve had the small Cotman set since about 1998, it’s a good one. I’d never heard the bigger one called ‘blue box’ before and looking it up, it came up on Amazon.com and it’s also a Cotman set. I watched a review recently comparing Cotman to Van Gogh and they found, as I can see here, that Van Gogh is generally more vibrant. It seems the strongest here except for Daniel Smith, but that’s a professional brand. Various other pro brands do small sets and 6 with a pair of cool and warm red, yellow and blue is very versatile if you’re happy to mix colours.

I’ve been painting off and on for three years now. I’ve got several mid range brands. Recently tried a few tubes of Schmincke Horadam. And woah, love! Just ordered a set of 12.

I have a cheap watercolor set but they come in small tubes, they dry out fast though. I’ve used them up as much as I could and love that your testing different sets since I want to get a new set. I like the small cell watercolors that come in small squares better. Thanks for giving us your knowledge about different sets.

I would start out with watercolor pans and if you notice that you want to paint a big painting or you want to be able to mix a certain color more quickly, then you can get additional tubes!

I read somewhere in the watercolor forum and they reccomended Koi watercolor. So i bought it. Boy I was dissapointed. Then i watched a youtube video and She was reccomending Cotman and White knight watercolor. I bought Cotman from Winsor n Newton and was so happy. Untill one day I have the budget and buy Winsor ans Newton peoffesional one. It's my favorite one still to this day, along with the Daniel Smith watercolor (❤ them both). The colors are way more rich and beautiful compared to the student quality one (Cotman). Best for me so far.

My experience with buying watercolors and judging the quality etc is by asking yourself what do you need it for. If you want to sell your artwork, definitely go for artists watercolors , I would recommend Horadam or Sennelier ...but if you want to just paint it then digitalised it later, a student grade watercolor for eg Cotman Winsor & Newton would work just fine

I was wondering if W&N watercolours were the most useful as I do have a set, or if maybe there was another type that I might prefer; these are great pointers in what to look for - so I was very pleased to find this video. I’m always watching your RU-vid videos as they’re just so useful to me - it’s been a while since I’ve done any painting due to illness and so hoping to get going again.

I've been using the Kuratake Gansai Tambe watercolours, and they're awesome. They mix really well and are ultra bright. They're Japanese and not really all that expensive. Here in Canada, for 36 colours, they were $40, which for Canada, is mega cheap! I adore them very much!

I have read Wilcox's Guide to the Best Watercolors, which is interesting if you like the science of all of this. A lot of the points you discuss here he discusses in the book. I chose Sennelier, based on what I had read. However, he did not discuss the idea that the use of honey may be an issue for some people. That's a very intriguing point and I will be taking that to heart. I'm not a vegan, but many of my friends are. Thank you, for the education. Shared experience is always appreciated.

I have the 24 la petite aquarelle from sennelier. I have since upgraded to L'Aquarelle I was able to get the whole colour range which is way to many colours but it was the best deal so i couldn't pass it up. I think the binder in sennelier is gum arabic and honey is added to keep the paints moist so they rewet easier, similar to how you can add glycerine.

Gosh, you just convinced me to get more different type of papers cuz I just want to, so I can experiment it with many watercolors!! gaaah. You're kind of killing me with excitement and budget too. Oh!! Would you will ever review on CultureHustle Stuart Semple's Palette?? Since it stated it's the world's colorist watercolor set and want to see your opinion to see if it fits your expectation on most colorful for water color or not really? Especially, it's professional quality, not for a student grade set. Even, they set amazing low or reasonable price for professional quality on watercolor.
