I had a feeling Zaxxon would take the number 1 spot. Terrible reimagining of the game. In ColecoVision's support of their Atari 2600's port, they had to make do with what they had to make the games. That's why their games were so lackluster. But if you want to cast shade on a version of Zaxxon, the Zaxxon Super Game for the ADAM computer has to be up there. One playthrough and that's it. No repeating of the levels.
Yes, I feel the 2600 Zaxxon is terrible, and was just a Coleco money grab maybe. Why even release this one as it was, except to cash in. Thank you for the comment!
The 2600 one is forgettable with there being so many other worthwhile versions. Any other Atari version is fine. Try Atari XE, 7800, or Lynx. The USA C64 one is no slouch either. Best are Sega Master System (it's a 256KB cart) and Atari ST/Amiga.
@@JudgmentStorm That's why the Master System's Rampage looked very much on par with the Arcade Rampage and so was Rampage on the Atari Lynx and I think Rampage on the Atari 7800 was at least 48k.
It was a let down for me back in the day, Have you played Defender II on the 2600? That is was I was expecting for Defender - so much better. That could be on my list of Best arcade conversions. Thank you for the comment!
@@StevesRetroGaming Defender and Defender 2/Stargate reminds me of when I saw Ms. Pac Man after playing Pac Man. I thought, "wait, this looks good, so why does the previous one look so bad?"
I actually like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Mouse Trap for the 2600 because that's all we had back in the day to play. In my opinion the worst Atari 2600 arcade conversion has got to be Burgertime, terrible port.
OMG - I forgot Burgertime. Maybe I need a part #2. What do you think think are the BEST arcade conversions? So far I have Frogger, Defender II, Missile Command, Berzerk, Pole Position and a few others on the list I am working on.
@@StevesRetroGaming Some of the best in my opinion are Asteroids, Joust, Phoenix, Dig Dug, Ms Pac-Man, Track and Field, Tapper, Space Invaders, Warlords, Millipede, Breakout, Galaxian, Jr Pac-Man, Moon Patrol, Kung Fu Master, Pengo, Reactor, Q Bert and Road Runner. If you include newer homebrews there are a heap more.
Nice, I sold my Atari 2600 and all games back then just to buy the Colecovision, I bought it just for the Donkey Kong alone!! Thank you for watching and your comment!
Hmmm. Quite unfair characterization IMO. To me, if system limitations are taken into account, I'm amazed that Congo Bongo and Zaxxon even work, with the attempt at isometric 3D and 3D, on this abysmally underpowered system. So I would be much more lenient with their ranking. Also I think comparatively speaking, the Atari Pac Man is much worse of an attempt than the Donkey Kong.
No unfair, just an opinion, everyone has them and everyone is different. What is YOUR top 10 worse 2600 arcade conversions. I would love to know. I think Donkey Kong mostly disappointed me so badly is that it only has 2 of the four levels. Did you listen to Garry Kitchens interview this weekend from GenXGrownUp, it was so amazing and he cleared up so much about the 2600 Donkey Kong - Thank you for the comment!
TRUE, I know Atari is to blame by wanting most games squeezed on a 4K cartridge and short time limits they game the programmers - Thank you for the comment!
There are two versions of Congo Bongo for the commodore 64, the better one is super rare, I think I have it on ebay right now. BUT some games should've just never crossed over to the 2600 and this is one of them. Thank you for the comment!
I played the crap out of pac-man for the atari. Got it on the 2600 before ever playing the arcade because older kids wouldn't share. So I didn't hate it.
Yes, Coleco probably should've skipped Zaxxon on the 2600, but if they thought they could make $$$, I know that's what it was all about to them. What was your #1 pick? Oh, I never played Double Dragon back in the day, should I check it out? Thank you for the comment!
@@StevesRetroGaming The worst conversion? Gotta go with Double Dragon. I actually played it back in the day and got so angry that I turned it off from my friend's Atari and suggested we play anything else. Zaxxon would be number 2, although we had it and played it, it looked nothing like the arcade. I put it above DD because it's somewhat playable while DD was not.
@@chrissawyer1484 - I always felt like Zaxxon was a totally different game and then Coleco just slapped the Zaxxon name on it. But at least the space ship shooting part reminds me of the arcade and nothing else. I really need to check our Double Dragon again.
Oh so many games to pick from, I know I forgot some, I need to make a BEST arcade list. Some people would say Joust should be on that list!?! Thank you for watching and your comment!
Donkeykong jr was a really really lazy port,it’s level layouts aren’t even correct either and in some levels you can hardly tell whether you get hit or just passed an enemy,BUT with modern tool kits and hardware expansions,we can create such great arcade conversions for the 2600 that they almost can be onpar with nes quality standards, you have to see to believe it.
YES, maybe I should've put DK:Jr higher on my list. You are right, I have made videos on modern day home brew of Donkey Kong and Pac-man and they are just mind blowing!! And the Galaga that came out a few years ago also, WOW!!! Thank you for the comment!
Oh, I forgot about Xevious and can't remember the last time I even played it. Normally I get a refresher of the games as I get cartridges in to resell and I haven't seen a 2600 xevious cartridge in a LONG time. Is it as bad as Zaxxon or worse? Thank you for the comment.
Steve you have be fair 1 its ATARI built for PONG 1977 w NO memory 2 things like ET and DK AND Pacman were RUSHED, PM was a alpha stage. 3 its not WORST you trying to shove a game into 4K cart and w rushed shovewere for holiday TIS what your going get. DK JR was Worst
Of course everyone is well aware of that fact, it - What is YOUR top 10 worse game list. It doesn't matter if a game was rushed, if they suck they suck...
@@StevesRetroGaming WORST OF ABSULUTE WORST FIREFLY AND SORCERER and 3rd the Fox one w the flying white ship Star Fox! ALl 3 SAME GAME different skin at LEAST DK JR was some what an attempt SF,FF,S ARE like programmer programed for 3 minutes and gave up
@@cootmasterOh yes that game is horrible, but there are so many bad 2600 game, just companies trying to cash in. Which could've lead to the game crash. I don't think I could make a 10 top worse games for the 2600 too many to pick from, but none of these arcade games on this list would be included. I was just playing DK Jr on the 2600 this weekend (testin carts for Ebay), that game is frustrating. I can't even believe I made it to the second screen. But is it worse than Zaxxon? The Zaxxon game should've just been called something else. The outter space screen wasn't too bad I guess. OH, I was thinking about making a TOP 10 Arcade list. Battlezone, Berzerk, Defender 2, Joust, Galaxian, Ms Pac-man, Phoenix, Pole Posiition, Space Invaders, Tapper?
