I’ll never get tired of learning how weirdly specific and/or bad so many outdated cards are before the game became using your main deck key to open the extra deck weapons vault.
Almost all of them are anime cards from DM and GX. Because writers make up hyper circumstancial cards that will never work in a realistic scenario. Anime cards have A long history of being trash
Fun fact: Photon Generator Unit is actually illegal to play because of its quotations requiring 2 monsters SPECIFICALLY named “Cyber Dragons” ,not “Cyber Dragon”s. It had to get a special ruling to mean 2 monsters named Cyber Dragon.
The way you worded the ruling seems to me like the Cyber Dragon monsters who are treated as Cyber Dragon while on the field are excluded. Is this how it currently works?
@@SmittyWerbenjagermanjensen_1 it's a super nitpick because the card name is "Cyber Dragon", with no 's' in quotes. But the card text in PGU mentions "Cyber Dragons". There is no Card named "Cyber dragons", so nothing for furfills the conditions. Note the 's' being in quotes there. This wouldn't matter in the OCG because Japan doesn't traditionally have plurality. So call it a localization error lol.
@@raze2012_ thanks, but I didn‘t ask for clarification why the english localization of the card technically doesn‘t work. That was clear to me. I was thinking about the difference between the first harpie support and the Cyber Dragon stuff. Harpie #1 is alway Harpie whereas the Proto Cyber Dragon is just treated as Cyber Dragon while on it‘s on field. I‘m pretty sure the Harpies where supposed to act as additional copies of the vanilla one and not replace her. But due to the wording it just doesn‘t work as intended … so my question is: is the ruling worded in a way that it specifically requires the OG 5-star Cyber Dragon and only him or are all the Cydra support cards valid targets when on field and treated as Cydra? So basically does a ruling create a difference between name printed on card and name treated as something?
@@SmittyWerbenjagermanjensen_1 I dunno for sure. Since you were rude I decided to specifically check for the official quote. All I can find is: "Photon Generator Unit" does not select a target. So you can figure it out from there, I guess
When i was playing Crystal Beasts after they released the new support, the fact that if you have 8 Crystal Beasts in GY you can't summon Rainbow Dragon was something that i had to learn the hard way.
Apparently its a bug I just read a forum where a guy reported this to a couple judges who both mention it shouldn't matter but for some reason it's not allowing it even though the card never specifies it has to be exactly 7 different names
I'm a startup gamedev, and my research heavily includes videos exactly like this! I really appreciate the work you do analyzing and comparing mechanical functions and card efficacy within its meta. There's valuable information in learning bad design as well as good.
@sammyhain I'm heavily inspired by Warcraft, but I hate that over the time it reigned, it never truly innovated and showed us what it could be. My plan is to make a large-scale online rpg that features mmo-like elements but prioritizes 1. Combat 2. Non-linear progression 3. Exploration & engagement But I also have a mini game within it that is a card game, so the necessity to understand the fundamentals of good TCG play is important to me. Right now I only work on the card game to relax from my other work. This is just fun to me, and I love design.
The thing about Ring of Defense is that it doesn't even work the way it's supposed to anymore. It was supposed to prevent you from taking damage from ring of destruction while still doing it to your opponent, but thanks to errata, if you don't take damage, your opponent won't either.
It's not even an errata issue, the first printing itself had the problem that in prevented ALL effect damage and not just effect damage to you like in the anime.
Jar robber should be number 1 on the list because unless they give it like a pot of desires like effect! Pot of greed would always be banned and therefore would make jar robber useless
I used to run monster recovery in my blue eyes deck. I would target lady with the eyes of blue to special summon a blue eyes from my deck and then draw cards it worked nicely imo
I will disagree with Soul Reversal to an extent. In the Older YGO games, I ran an early version of Mill strategy that had 1 Morphing Jar, 1 Cyber Jar and 3 Needle Worms. I ran 2 Soul Reversals and would use it after my opponent attacked into a Morphing or Cyber Jar (latter preferred). This immediately allows me to draw the Jar back and play it... use up all my resources to set up a defense and then flip up the Jar somehow. Reversal was NOT the main recovery spell (that's more done by The Shallow Grave) but it still gave me enough to work with. Of course, that was when Yugioh was slow as a geriatric snail so the spell CLEARLY wouldnt work now, but it still had SOME use back then... albeit a very short lived and limited use
For early jar based strategies they'd usually try to mill out the opponent in one single turn through card destruction. The main idea back then was to fill up your opponent's hand like crazy by activating cyber jar multiple times during your turn (through book of moon and tayou usually) so the opponent would end up with 10+ hand cards, after which you'd use card destruction and force your opponent to draw 10+ cards again before finishing off with a way to recycle card destruction and use it again, decking out your opponent. The reason this combo needs to go off in a single turn is because if you ever let your opponent have an end phase, they will discard down to 6 and your card destructions will be much weaker. So even in a jar based mill strategy soul reversal wasn't useful.
@@nicolaistuhlmuller8718Agreed. What i did was a poor attempt since i didnt considering using books during the time i slotted Reversal However, reversal did offer me enough to work with. But i would STILL say its not that good. I guess my disagreement with DuelLogs is just on how high the card was placed... but the card does deserve to BE in the list 😅
It's funny that kaiba used the Ring Of Defense combo with Ring Of Destruction when he could've used Des Wombat or Barrel Behind The Door Instead and for anime context, Spell Of Pain is literally a straight upgrade.
Not sure if the anime effect of Spell of Pain is a straight upgrade, the real version cannot be used on your own card like Ring of Destruction and the anime also didn't use it on their own card, it was used on the enemies monster damage/Ring of Destruction. We don't know for sure if the anime effect has the "opponent card only " restriction or not.
2:45 Idea to improve this card’s intended function: _Ring of Salvation_ Quick-Play Spell _You can activate this card from your GY or during the turn it was set, but if you do: Shuffle it into your deck after it’s effects resolve. If an Effect that inflicts damage is activated: Make that effect damage 0. If you would take any amount of battle damage: Make that damage become 0._
@@Briskeeen I mean what would I need to do to further improve it? I’d say the card can do its intended function plenty better now (can be activated from the GY or the turn it’s set, shuffle itself into the deck afterwards for future reuse, works with monster and spell effects also now, and can negate battle damage.)
_When an effect that inflicts damage is activated: Negate that effect, and if you do, gain LP equal to that damage, then, if you gained at least 1000 LP with this effect, draw 1 card._ Still bad, but at least it's kinda usable i guess
@@ButFirstHeLitItOnFireno I mean the effect is fundamentally bad. There isn't anyway to improve it because effects that deal with battle and effect damage are bad in Yu-Gi-Oh
@@Briskeeen I mean with the way the card works, you can activate from your hand the first time like normal, then do it again from your GY. So that’s 2 instances of Battle/Effect damage you can negate per copy of ROS, or up 6 instances if you have all 3 copies in your hand. That would probably screw over A LOT of OTK strats.
In the Photon Generator Unit segment, I believe that back in the day you could also run Protocyber Dragon as its effect is to get you Cyber Dragon's name on the field easier. Still a bad idea and changes nothing to how bad that quick-play is, but just worth mentioning.
Level down could be potentially useful if they ever release alternate evolution lines for premiere existing level monsters similar to how some Pokémon have multiple branches in there evolution path. Take horus the black flame dragon what if they had a inverted version that floodgates traps instead of monsters similar to jinzo but with the same clause that horus level 8 has that says you can choose if you want to stop the trap Or if an armed dragon line destroyed back row instead of monsters
13:09 Idea to make this card better for anti-targeting: _Mirage Migraine_ Quick Play Spell _Activate only when your opponent targets a card you possess for an attack or card effect. Inflict 1000 Damage to your opponent, then apply 1 of the following effects._ _⚪️Change the Target of the attack/Effect to another correct target._ _⚪️Add 1 card to your hand from your deck or GY with the same original name as the target’s._ _⚪️Negate that Attack or Effect._
You can draw multiple cards with guard penalty: The destiny hero guy (name escapes me) did it in the GX anime by changing a monster to defense position twice with spark blaster
In one of the yugioh world championship games I ran a banish focused Obelisk deck using the card Necoface. Necoface is a card that returns all banished cards to their owner's deck and gains stats for each card returned, but if it's sent to the graveyard or banished both players banish the top 5 cards of their deck, so monster recovery was a nice way of using Necoface, getting its effect off, and returning it to my deck so I can use it again when needed
I was glad to see barrel behind the door make a cameo here. My only win in any kind of competitive game was an otk where my opponent pulled some crazy first turn shit and pulled blue eyes ultimate dragon, which walked into my set Ring of destruction and barrel behind the door.
I love DuelLogs videos, but this video is like EVEN better because not only is it explained why the card is bad, it also gives you an alternative that is still bad but still way better.
I think it could see some play... but not wide spread. Most jar cards are limited / semi limited and many T1 decks have their own archetypal ways to draw / increase their consistency. I dont see Jars splashed in decks as often as i did before
9:58 Idea to amend this card to be better: _Photon Generator Unit MK.2_ Quick-Play Spell _Tribute 2 “Cyber” cards from your hand and/or field; Apply 1 of the following effects:_ _⚪️Special Summon (from your hand or deck) 1 Level 5 or lower monster than mentions “Cyber” in its name or Text._ _⚪️Activate 1 (From your Hand or Deck) 1 Spell/Trap that mentions “Cyber” in it’s name or text._ _⚪️Add to your hand, send to your GY or banish 1 card you possess that mentions “Cyber” in its name or text._
A better idea would be to retrain Cyber Laser Dragon into a Link monster. I devised a Link 3 with Y arrows (upper diagonals and straight down) that would retain the spirit of the monster. Before you complain about the Y arrows, here's the effect I had: 2+ "Cyber Dragon" This card's name is treated as "Cyber Dragon" while on the field or in the GY. This card must be summoned to an Extra Monster Zone. All "Cyber Dragon" monsters you control inflict piercing battle damage. Once per turn, you may activate one of the following effects: - Banish 1 card this card points to - Destroy 1 monster on the field with ATK less than or equal to this card. Because of the line "Must be summoned to an Extra Monster Zone", it cannot be used towards a 3 card Extra Link as the card in the middle without excessive effort to move it after being summoned.
@@azuredragoon2054 Would it be a Machine or Cyberse monster (since you can’t really spell “Cyberse” without Cyber, and the Cyberse and Link types have a lot of interplay anyway.)
@@taninsuwannatri8411 I don’t know, “Cyberse Dragon” has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Ah but if only YuGiOh monsters took a page from Magic or the Pokémon Video Games and had monsters with multiple main types.
You know I'm not a vtuber person and I won't watch his new group but I'm kind of proud of him for how far he's come. The guy is a go getter. I don't even think it'll be successful but you gotta appreciate the stamina this guy has for constantly making new channels and working on new ventures.
I knew someone who ran a Horus deck and they'd use Level Down!? on their own LV8 Horus to extend their battle phase, but only for game. I think that's the only use for it though.
1:38 Idea to improve this card by just making it apply to changing battle positions in general: _Position Penalty_ Quick-Play Spell _For the rest of the turn, each time an opponent’s monster(s) changes battle position, Draw 1 card._ So basically with this, something like “Spark Blaster” (that was in the last video BTW) would effectively become a Pot of Greed.
I genuinely think Cyber Laser Dragon would have seen at least a little play if you just had to tribute one cyber dragon, on the playground if nothing else. It's a brick in the hand, sure, but PGU summons it from anywhere so that means you can use it for discard fodder and still summon it, letting activate cards like Phoenix Wing Wind Blast basically for free. But needing two tributes immediately makes it dead in the water
It would be a better ritual monster in that situation... (at least, better in early 2000s ritual monster standards which is... not saying much) But i do agree it could. 2 Cyber dragons at that time where there were only 2 that had the actual name (Cyber Dragon and the Prototype Cyber Dragon, which changes its name when in the field) makes it too cumbersome to use. For all that effort... just slot in a power bond and a cyber twin dragon in your extra deck. If only 1 was required, upgrading a 2100 ATK to a 2400 Atk with destruction effect... or a 1100 ATK to a 2400 ATK, would have been pretty good
i was playing a master duel game a couple months ago and used raigeki the opponent responded with anti raigeki i was surprised who in their right mind use a specific counter trap?
Sooo. During the era where Pot of Greed was actually legal (yes, I did play it, I am that old) Solemn Judgement was not nearly as good as it became because the game was far too slow. In that day, while the omni negate was nice, having to pay half of your life points was too high of a price as you would more often than not lose life points in increments of 500-1500, and protecting your card once was not worth 4000 life points. Combos were NOTHING like they even became during the end of the OG YuGiOH not even GX so the real reason why Robber never saw use was because it didn't let you draw 2 cards, only one Pot of Greed and trading one for one with no swing in tempo or card advantage was not worth it being dead on field.
Back in the day Solemn Judgment wasn't "considered" good. It was still good people were just being too cautious. Modern Goat format decks very often run a set of Solemn Judgment because hindsight it WAS worth half your life points if it stopped a blowout
I can see Guard Penalty being used in a deck that can easily change positions on either side of the field. I could probably splash a copy or two into my Karakuri deck in Master Duel and get results.
5:21 Idea to make this more generic to use: _Card Recovery_ Quick-Play Spell _Target any number of cards on the field that you own: Shuffle them and your entire hand into your deck, and if you do, draw cards equal to the number of shuffled cards, and if you draw more than 6 cards, your hand size limit is increased by equal to the number of additional cards for the rest of the duel._
I dont know if its been done already, or even practical, but what about a top 10 best cards, or best decks, during specific formats? Like early lob format, goat format, or any of the other formats that i dont actually know the names of? For example, i know there was a format where zoodiac was terrifying and i know a few of the pieces of that deck, but maybe there were more much needed cards. Or maybe there are only actually one, two or three cards that actually make a deck really good. In terms of format it could just be the 10 best cards, with maybe 1-3 of each of the top decks, depending on their individual power level, or maybe you choose the top 5 decks and choose the best 2 cards from each, or maybe the top 10 decks and just the best card of each.
Yeah, Mirage Tube definitely got nerfed hard from its anime version. In the anime, it negated the attack and burned your opponent for the attack of the target monster.
@@arrownoir"V"irtual You"tuber". Aka, someone streaming while using an animated Avatar instead of their actual Face. The "Virtual" part of the Name comes from the fact that originally (ie, if you aren't watching a professionally employed one), the point was that the Avatar gets treated as if they are a real entity who is entirely seperate from the actual Person who is doing the streaming (as they "act out" a different personality while "on camera"). To give a more simplified explanation, imagine a Movie Actor goes to an Interview but stays in-character as whoever they played in the Movie the entire time. VTubers basically do that but as Livestreamers.
I have an idea for guard penalty What if the card can force a monster from either side to defence position and keep it that till the controlling players next turn but the controller of the monster gets a card draw when the effect resolves. Also Jar robber should be playable on any pot/jar spell/trap.
3:08 Wait, why wouldn’t that work on Magic Cylinder. Was thinking of using it as imagine I make a powerful boss monster, go to inflict 4K damage. He uses magic cylinder turning it to effect damage so I make it 0 with ring of defense. Still negated my attack, but would I still be taking the 4K?
What about a top ten for "hidden" combos that arent obvious at first? To make this more clear my first thought is cyber dragon hertz into machine duplication to pull two cyber dragons
0:10 Idea to improve/Retrain this card: _The Dependable Guardian_ Quick-Play Spell _Target 1 Face-Up monster you control: Increase that target’s DEF by equal to its original ATK, then further Double its DEF. While that target is in face-up Defense Position, you take no battle or effect damage from your opponent, and any such damage you would take instead increases the target’s DEF equally._
Ring of Defense is probably the most painful one on the list, considering that there was no reason to nerf it compared to the anime version. Could've just make it prevent an instance of effect damage to you, wouldn't have been broken at all, but nooooo.
I would say it would get SOME use... but not a whole lot. Not all decks and rely on flip cards... and the one flip card that i can see this new version can abuse is Pot of the Forbidden... but not all decks can slot that in Meanwhile, Flip-based archetypes like Subterrors have their own means of recovery... so it may be redundant. If back in the GX era where Cyberjar was still legal at 1 and the game was really slow... then yea... i can see it being useful for an Empty Jar deck
@@kennydarmawan13 i think it would, Honestly... im shocked that snake rain hasnt completely broken into the meta yet... then again, i have stopped playing YGO for about year now so maybe im missing something?
Photon Generator Unit had a niche use in an OTK attempt since it could be done in the battle phase. It's still an absolutely terrible card, but I believe that fact should move it down a few rungs on the worst list
7:14 Idea to improve this card: _Reversal of Finality_ Quick-Play Spell _Apply 1 of the following effects. Each effect of “Reversal of Fate” card only be applied once per turn._ _⚪️Banish 1 card from your GY._ _⚪️Shuffle 1 card from your GY into your deck._ _⚪️Tribute 3 cards from your hand and/or field: From your GY, Either Special Summon 1 Monster, OR Activate 1 Spell/Trap._
11:45 Idea to make a joint retrain of this and “Level Up!”: _Level-ed Playing Field!_ Quick-Play Spell _(This card’s name is always treated as “Level Up!” And “Level Down?!”)_ _Banish 1 face-up “LV” monster on the field that you own, then Special Summon 1 monster from Hand, Deck or GY to either player’s field with same name but a different "LV" (ignoring the Summoning conditions)._
isnt monster recovery a -1 ? you draw by the amount of card you shuffle so if you have 1 monster & 5card hand, activate monster recovery you shuffle 6 then draw 6 ?
No, monster recovery exclusively states "cards you shuffled from your hand", so with one monster on the field, a set monster recovery and 5 in hand you have 7 cards. You then activate monster recovery, bringing you down to 6, then shuffle the monster and hand into your deck, draw 5 cards and have 2 less than before.
Reliable Guardian is definitely not a good card, even in the context of Classic Yugioh. But I've just gone on Format Library and searched all Quick-Play Spells from Glad Beast format (last pre synchro format) and there are definitely some worse ones, including: "A" Cell Scatter Burst A Deal with Dark Ruler Combination Attack Malice Dispersion Mind Wipe Tailor of the Fickle There are a few situational ones that are also pretty bad but could have uses
Why is Mirage Tube a spell? It can't be activated from the hand and can only be used when one of your monsters is attacked. And I'm pretty sure you can't use spell cards during your opponent's turn.
That's still super awful. Not only were those two monsters already bad when guard penalty came out, but you'd then have a card that's literally unplayable as long as you don't have either monster out. It's super easy to brick, which is just what a draw 1 card should never do.
You fool! If you combo monster recovery with serpentine princess, it's only a minus one, plus you can summon out sangan for more value! This is surely a good idea and will reshape goat format
I was surprised Pot of Greed wasn’t on this list. Since it’s one that no one can remember what the card does. Then I remembered it’s not a quick play from this video so I was also under this spell!
