Not really. The entire album was about being famous. Same with red and ratitude. It just wasn't them. Another problem was the instrumentation. It was lazy as hell and boring. You can like whatever you want but most fans despise this song and Make Believe

Of course it flopped, it sold far less then it's debut, received mixed reviews and out of it's only 3 singles none of them managed to chart nearly as well as their previous singles. I think it's more then fair to say it was a flop despite it's cult following.

will fahey it's not that it's a bad song it's that it was a slap in the face of the fans who loved their raw sound. That album was very much them selling out to major corporations to reach a younger demographic to make money. They lost a lot of their original fan base because of it.

... it's not a bad song, it's very very good; the problem is which band wrote it: Metallica. This is not the kind of song that Metallica used to write, but the song is perfect if somebody says "this is Korn" and fit perfect. It's like, for example, Radiohead wrote and sang "The Perfect Drug" (Nine Inch Nails)

True but they were mainstream like prince was mainstream. A bit pretentious and weird and you either loved or hated them. Beverly Hills kind of appealed to the lowest common denominator so they could get a bit more airplay and while it worked it also isolated their hardcore fans.

First of all let me state that while I don't hate weezer by any means I would also not consider myself a fan just someone who occassionally enjoys listening to them. I would never pay money to see them in concert, buy one of their CD's or a T-Shirts. I have however listened to most of their music not just their singles. That being said Island in the Sun while I would argue is the most mainstream hit they ever had was still very much weezer in it's quirkiness. Strange melodies and their geeky nature all come to the surface in the song. If pretty uninspired lyrically Hashpipe on the other hand was very polarizing to non weezer fans. I have talked to several people who find the melody obnoxious and the lyrics offensive given the profanity and drugs mentioned. Beverly Hills might as well just be a generic rap song with its lyrics.

Beverly Hills was the third best song to come out of Weezer's "pop song" era, the second best being Memories, and the best being The Greatest Man That Ever Lived. I even like the song as just a Weezer song in general, but when you compare it to their best stuff, be it anything off of Blue Album and Pinkerton, Hash Pipe, Island In The Sun, or even stuff from Everything Will Be Alright In The End and the White Album, it's very, very weak.

Queen were bloody excellent, but even Freddie Mercury would say that Hot Space was mostly a mess. It was an experiment that didn't quite pan out, but at least it gave us the incredible "Under Pressure", so it wasn't a complete loss. And as they said on the video, live versions of Staying Power were ramped up way beyond the lazy disco synth version on the album, proving that Freddie was indeed capable of making even the dullest tunes shine.

Hot Space is bad but really not that bad. Under Pressure is not the only good track in it. I think Cool Cat and Life Is Real are quite good as well. And I love that they were able to turn a mediocre song like Staying Power into something interesting when they played live.

K Browne Yeah, I'll concede that they weren't all bad tracks on Hot Space, I think it was the arrangements more than anything else which made it such a disappointment. I doubt any Queen fan would have it in their top five, unless it had some seriously special personal significance. It's not their worst album either. That goes to Flash, which is nothing more than a few snatches of music to segments of the movie and feels like a blatant cash grab. This annoys me not just because I really like the movie (it's B movie bad!), but also because their other soundtrack, "A Kind Of Magic" is a masterpiece and is more or less my favourite Queen album.

Weezer has always been mainstream since the Green album, which was only their 3rd album out of many. Beverly Hills isn't too much different that anything from Green album era. It was also a successful song for them commercially. Also a bit surprised to see "Dancing in the Street" in the honorable mentions. It was also a popular and successful Bowie song/colab at the time of release.

Weezer were mainstream from the jump. The Sweater Song was an instant hit for them and lead to them becoming one of the biggest bands in the world. Pinkerton may have not done too well when it initially hit the market, but that's basically the only stumble they've had...and over the years even that little failure turned itself positive as Pinkerton is now regarded as a "cult" classic itself...
