In this video I look at the ten worst pieces of video game box art ever (well in my opinion anyway!) and some other notable contenders. Please support my creative work on Patreon: / lairdslair #RetroGaming #BoxArt #Top10
Salamander's Star Trek (dragon trek ?) box art does have the honour of being the only time in the start trek franchise where Kirk had to defent the federation against a horde of space popcorn. (well placed at #1). Even when the artwork was exceptional though, I remember standing in stores and thinking "Imagine if the game looked like THAT". Of course today they do, but back in the days of 256x192 16 colour output, how could they ? I liked the early TI solution...low rez hand-drawn representations of the actual gameplay graphics. You actually got what was on the box (well not actually the box, since all TI boxes were just generic packaging with a display windows to show the cover of the manual where the artwork appeared. (and they forced 3rd party developers into that packaging style as part of the licensing agreement)
Take it easy on Tommy Lasorda there fella! Do you remember a poster that commonly came with Atari 7800 games - maybe 2600 games too? Looked like a semi-talented Middle School student drew it! Atari’s cheapness under the Tramiel’s is cringeworthy!
