To me, the Metroid series is the closest we've got to having a perfect video game franchise. The worldbuilding, the gameplay, and the music just interlock perfectly. This video was made for myself just as much as for anyone else since I really love studying to video game music, and Digital Devil Arts25's countdown of the top 100 Shin Megami Tensei songs inspired me to make a Metroid counterpart (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T9QdmsaXtc8.html).

Having to tread the backwaters of the internet for free video game music really brought back memories of my early to mid teens, but I managed to find these sources:
- Metroid Recon for every game between Metroid and Other M metroid.retropixel.net/
- www.sittingonclouds.net/ for Samus Returns, I have no idea if it is actually reputable or not, I did have to sit through an adfly for the first time in years.
- Roynerer's incredible compilation of all Smash music over on Reddit www.reddit.com/r/SmashBrosUltimate/comments/am77l5/super_smash_bros_anthology_complete_enhanced/
Obviously some of the rankings are a little arbitrary, but I'm pretty confident about my picks for the top 25. Don't read too much into the list either way!

Gandrayda's Theme will forever be my favorite. Much like her ability to mimic other lifeforms, her OST mimics elements of Prime 1 and 2's OSTs. It just fitted so well.

i just played prime for the first time this week. got it set up on an emulator on my PC after about 2 hours of hassle. when 2:20:35 played and those synths hit i was mindblown. literally sat in my living room listening to the music there for hours, just walking around. absolute shame more people haven't had a chance to experience these games

IMO #8 should be #1. #8 is right up there with other classics like the imperial Death March. For me, Super Metroid has so many iconic themes and is in the running for the best video game music on one game.

#26: Title (Metroid II: Return of Samus) - I love how this theme sets the tone for the game. It's actually one of the quietest, and therefore spookiest, title screens I can think of, and it foreshadows the quiet, ambient feel of many of the game's areas. For a Gameboy game, Metroid II was really ambitious. I personally think the single-note transitions from areas with music to ambient areas (e.g. from the first to second areas you play in) are fantastic, and games that didn't have non-stop music throughout were pretty unusual for the time. The chime that plays when you defeat a Metroid is also extremely satisfying. Thanks for including this. :)

Absolutely love this list and all the amazing music on it! I’m a huge fan of the Metroid series and the Alien movie franchise that helped inspire the Metroid universe. I still have my original Metroid (NES) with the box and Super Metroid too. I started with Metroid in the arcade before it was released on the NES. Been a fan ever since. Now I’m trying to play all the games leading up to Dread in order. I finally got my hands on a DS and some of the games I never got to play. I’m looking forward to a Metroid Prime Trilogy for Switch so I can play those too eventually. Some terrific Prime tunes! As for the order, I tend to be partial to the songs from the first three games but there are gems from the entire series. I think the original Kraid’s Lair gets stuck in my head more than any Metroid song and could be the number one just for that reason and all the hours stuck trying to figure it all out pre-Internet and no Nintendo Power guide, haha. So catchy. Cheers to Metroid and Samus!

#88 - Given the hardware limitations of the GameBoy, it's impressive just how much depth the Metroid Hatchling track has to it. The use of different tonalities between the two pulse channels is really really good. The composer sure knew what he was doing.

Tallon Overworld should be in the Top 10. The track is one of the best ones at transmitting a great sense of wonder, mystery, beauty and vastness regarding the world you're set to explore. I remember I would often come back to the starting point, where the ship was, just to listen to it while looking at my surroundings in the rain. There are even parts of the track that evoke descension and ascension, as if you were the foreign creature getting into the unknown. Edit #1: I am listening to Sunken Frigate and I must say I love Metroid Prime music. Edit #2: What a way to start the Top 10! The track definitely belongs there! Edit #3: Top 1 pick totally deserves to be there. It perfectly encapsulates all there is to Metroid so far.

#7 was SOO GOOD. Recently started playing the prime games (haven't been able to get my hands on the original prime tho) and when I got to Rundas I tried to stay alive as long as I could to savor this beautiful piece of music.

My dear friend thank you for this list and please allow me to respectfully say that every Metroid fan Top 10 is very passional choice so it is great to debate about things we all like...clearly you are on the more agitated/psychedelic oriented tracks (for example boss tracks in top 10 and your #4 would never be my choices). Im more on the atmospheric/dark/slow/relaxing tracks (to me nothing represents Metroid atmosphere more than those lonely dark songs such as your #6, #3 and #2). So your #69 includes Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Title theme, which deserved to be a separate item in the list and moved up to the top, the title track of Corruption is amazing. Even understanding your preferences, seems to me Lower Norfair has much better version, such as in Metroid Prime 1, so probably your choice was more nostalgic going with the SNES version, I get it =) . However, not having Torvus Depths and Phendrana Drifts in the top 10 (or top 20) and even putting them waaaay low in the list to me is sad =) but of course, this great list is subjective. Thanks for the great selection, really good!

Listening to #98 was kind of painful because I'd only ever heard it in AM2R and it's so beautiful in that game haha, it feels like someone added random pauses, speeding it up and slowing it down Wish there was some music from AM2R in here because I honestly think it has some of the best music in the Metroid franchise

ngl I'm so confused as to why Temple Grounds is at the lowest spot. That's one of my favorite songs and is 10x better than Vesper Outpost, which is somehow right above it. Maybe these aren't actually ranked but then the title is misleading. Epic video btw. also I just realized METROID 2 CHOZO RUINS is ABOVE BOTH OF THOSE what the heck Idk I would've put almost every Prime 2 song high on the list

It is ranked, but you've gotta start any list with a song that's way better than the lowest spot so you catch the viewer's attention ;) (which is actually true of Watchmojo/Cracked and stuff like that, in my case it was just what wound up at #100 for some reason, it was 3 years ago so I can't remember whatever logic it was that put such a disproportionately good song at #100)
